Eight years ago I backed the SD camp and bought my digital camera
equipment based on this technology as opposed to the compact flash
(where are they now?) or the Sony memory stick camp. There were others
like XD and the like but they were minor players.

It was a good choice as the $150 256mb SD card back then is still
working albeit as a Wii hack today but the multi card reader bought
for $75 has reached its limit when I found out that it does not
support SDHC. Now, I have had this 4 gb card for a while but I cannot
recall if I used the card reader before today (I must have!) as it
won't read the bloody thing!

Apple compounded the issue by releasing OSX fix for cards but the
holiday photos cannot be read by the Mac. I tried the old XP laptop to
no avail. Alas! Ubuntu is my savior and used the built in card reader
in the laptop.

Bigger, faster technology means buying new gear. BTW, Marisa's got
some files in a floppy and we can't get to them.

The problem with multi-OS environment such as this household, is compatibility between different file systems. It gets pretty annoying for external drives that the Macs have difficulty to write on NTFS which is not a problem for Linux and XP. exFAT solves the Mac/XP problem but it leaves Linux out in the cold given that Microsoft wants a license fee for it.

HFS+ is out of the question as XP and Linux have limitations. So where to from here? NTFS with only read support, for now. Microsoft is also introducing another file system for Windows 8, ReFS. I can understand the need for exFAT for external drives, and it should be the standard. With all the talk on memory cards, mobile devices, etc. at the end of the day, Microsoft gets paid even for Android devices sold by HTC, Samsung, etc. due to licensing. That's business acumen 101 for Microsoft.

In the past week, we've had the crazy Melbourne summer weather,
plunging to 16 degrees Celsius last weekend and now we are struggling
at 29 degrees half an hour to midnight. Trains were cancelled that
forced a number of Melbournians to cram in a bus ride home. I read
that fifteen train drivers called in sick - did they all go to the pub
as a team building exercise?

I was hungry by the time the bus drove past my car and had to walk
back - the reflective shade in the car didn't help much as it was
probably 45 degrees inside whilst in the carpark but I cannot recall
being this disoriented in the heat. Guess hunger plays a big part,
which makes one wonder which is worse, especially for the homeless,
hot and hungry or cold and hungry?
