Crystal Cruises Announces Wimbledon Package

I'm up for a good martini as much as the next person, and part of what makes cruising so fun is the nightlife, so here's to Hal's new martinis, designed to make cruising on their line just a little bit more glamourous!

Yes, the Holland America Line has introduced a new menu of martini cocktails on board its fleet of 14 ships. Featured on the menu are 19 Grey Goose martinis and a sampler platter of mini, specialty martinis called the martini flight.

Showcasing mixology at its best, a new martini flight will feature six of the menus premier martinis. Air Canada Jazz closes Hamilton operations

Well I suppose we knew it was coming...higher fuel costs are going to trigger a number of consequences in the travel industry. This just in...

Regional airline Air Canada Jazz has begun to scale back its operations to tackle higher fuel costs by announcing plans to close its Hamilton operations at the end of July, a move that will affect 14 customer service agents and eliminate 10 daily flights between the airport west of Toronto and airports in Ottawa and Montreal.

This most likely will not affect the Hamilton Airport all that much as WestJet is their main airline, but it does affect all those business clients who prefer to fly out of Hamilton than fight traffic into the GTA to fly from Pearson.

I'm sure every industry has its ups and downs, but travel continues to be a topsy turvey one riding the waves of customer trends, industry consolidation, the Internet and now, rising fuel costs.

Unlimited Summer Flying with new AC Pass

Air Canada is taking “the road” out of summertime travel with the return of its Ontario and Quebec summer passes, which provide unlimited intra-provincial flying during July and August for $1,099.

Available for sale through June 26, the Ontario Pass and the Quebec Pass are valid for Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz flights between July 1 and Aug. 31.

The passes provide for unlimited travel, within their respective provinces, between 12 destinations in Ontario and nine in Quebec, with certain exceptions in each province.

The Ontario Pass is not valid for point-to-point travel between Toronto and Ottawa (connections involving these two cities are permitted). The Quebec Pass does not permit travel to or from Iles de la Madeleine.

Pass prices include the fuel surcharge and all other fees and surcharges except G.S.T. and Q.S.T where applicable.

Air Canada to charge $25 for checking second bag

Following the lead of other North American carriers, Air Canada announced that passengers will have to pay $25 to check a second piece of luggage on all economy-class flights within North America. The change, it said, was prompted by "record high and unrelenting fuel costs."

The change will take effect on July 15, and applies to customers who buy Tango and Tango plus tickets. The new charge won't apply to business-class travellers or international flights.

Although WestJet has not announced that it will follow suit, do not be surprised if they make a similar announcement in the coming weeks.

Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Airways announced earlier this week that their passengers would be charged for checking a second bag.

Atlantic City wins over Las Vegas!

I know most of your gamblers and thrill seekers think of Las Vegas first - but pay attention, Atlantic City has just won a "stunning" upset over long time rival Las Vegas in a crucial competition.

A new hospitality study found New Jersey scored ahead of Las Vegas in virtually every category from value for price, to sophistication and pampering. The survey was particularly surprising because New Jersey’s Atlantic City at 30-years-old is a relative newcomer to the gaming market compared to Nevada, which has been around for 77 years.

"Compared to the Las Vegas Strip, Atlantic City guests are more satisfied with their hotel and casino experience," said the survey, published in Hotel & Motel Management magazine.

Seventh-eight percent of Atlantic City visitors were "very likely to recommend" the resort to others, but just 59% of Las Vegas visitors were as likely to do so, according to the San Rafael, California based Market Metrix.

Princess Plans to Add Adult-Only Areas to Entire Fleet

Princess plans to add quiet, adult-only deck areas to its entire fleet of ships, expanding the popular Sanctuary spots that debuted on the Crown Princess in 2006.

Only the Crown and Emerald Princess currently have Sanctuary, but the Island Princess, Grand Princess, Star Princess and upcoming Ruby Princess will be outfitted by the end of this year, and the remainder of the fleet by 2010.

These kid-free, low-music zones have become increasingly popular in the last couple years. Cruise lines like Disney and Royal Caribbean have had versions of adult areas on their ships since the 90’s, but Princess took it to the next level.

The Sanctuary is a roped off area that was initially free, but became so popular when the Crown debuted, the line quickly began charging a $10 fee for about four hours of relaxation time.

For the price, cruisers can lounge on plush, outdoor furniture while listening to piped-in spa music, while stewards bring around chilled face towels and Evian water atomizers. For additional fees, guests can order from a “healthy” food and beverage menu or rent MP3 players with pre-loaded relaxation tunes.

Carnival Cruise Lines took a cue from Princess and began adding quiet, adult-only “Serenity” areas to its ships this year as part of its $250 Fantasy-class upgrade initiative. The Serenity is so popular on the Imagination, the first ship to get it, that Carnival has said it may expand the concept to the rest of the fleet as well.

For now, Carnival has no plans to charge for use of that area, but if its popularity continues, the line has not ruled out the possibility of assessing a fee.

Okay, this seems a little out of left field, but Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with EMI Music, has introduced Fairmont Music Store, a new online retail initiative that will provide guests access to digital music exclusively from EMI Music’s catalog.

Located at www.fairmontmusicstore.com, the music boutique will be officially launched this spring. Through the new music portal, guests will be able to browse an extensive catalog of music and downloadable songs from top-selling EMI artists such as such as Coldplay, Norah Jones, Keith Urban, Anne Murray and Lenny Kravitz.

As part of this new music initiative, Fairmont will also extend additional benefits to members of its Fairmont President’s Club guest loyalty program, including preferred pricing on digital music, private access to exclusive song downloads and priority access to special events and concerts featuring EMI artists.

Princess bids farewell to traditional disembarkation process

Three cheers for Princess! The traditional “hurry up and wait” disembarkation process that has long been a cruise industry tradition is now history aboard Princess ships, as the line introduces a new streamlined farewell process for passengers.

Contrasted with the typical end-of-cruise departure where passengers listen to public address system announcements for their luggage tag colour to be called, Princess has debuted an efficient, more relaxed process for passengers leaving the ship.

Passengers are each given an assigned time and place to assemble on the final morning and are personally escorted to the gangway by a member of the ship’s staff, eliminating the guesswork as to the actual time passengers will be disembarking.

The new program is in the process of being rolled out fleetwide and has already been met with enthusiastic response from passengers. The new system eliminates loudspeaker announcements calling colour-coded departure groups and instead provides passengers with a letter the day before the end of the cruise that outlines their designated time to meet in an assigned public room, depending on their return air arrangements.

The revised system enables passengers to easily plan their morning without the uncertainty as to when they should prepare to depart the ship. It also eliminates passengers congregating in the ship’s atrium near the gangway, plus creates a more relaxed flow for morning breakfast.

Turf's Up on Celebrity Cruises

When Celebrity Solstice launches in December, the ship will present an industry first -- real, growing grass, set in an innovative new country club environment known as “The Lawn Club” on the top deck.

The half-acre Lawn Club will invite guests to enjoy bocce ball and croquet, practice their putting, picnic with a basket of wine and cheese, or simply feel the grass between their toes, while sailing the oceans of the world.

The area will also feature the Hot Glass Show, another first in the industry, developed in collaboration with The Corning Museum of Glass; the Patio on the Lawn; the Lawn Club Shop, and the Sunset Bar.

Celebrity worked with design firm Wilson Butler Architects to design the entire club area, then engaged a team of landscape architects and irrigation specialists along with turf and soil scientists at the University of Florida. Together, they conducted extensive research and tested a variety of grasses to determine which can withstand the winds, sun, shade and temperature variations that will affect the grass and soil as the ship sails in the Caribbean this winter. Other considerations included the ability of the grass to tolerate foot traffic, irrigation and day-to-day care and maintenance of the grass. Even the weight of the grass and soil had to be considered, as well as the water they absorb from the atmosphere and from irrigation.

The Lawn Club is over three times larger than New York’s Rockefeller Center ice skating rink (668 square metres); 1.7 times larger than an Olympic-size swimming pool; the equivalent of 8.2 tennis courts; 2.4 times the size of Centre Court at England’s Wimbledon Lawn & Tennis Club; and one-third the size of a regulation soccer field.

New US Travel Requirements

They warned us it was coming and now as of January 31st, oral declarations of citizenship alone will no longer be accepted by U.S. Customs.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you are entering the US by land or by sea, you'll need to show government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, ALONG WITH proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.

Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. And as always, passports and trusted traveller program cards – NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST – will continue to be accepted for cross-border travel.

The ballroom dance craze has hit the high seas! Royal Caribbean International passengers are being invited to Rumba, Samba, Cha-Cha, Waltz or Swing their way into the spotlight in “Invitation to Dance,” the cruise line’s newest production show featuring guests as stars aboard Explorer of the Seas.

Created in conjunction with Louis van Amstel, Emmy-nominated choreographer for ABC-TV’s “Dancing with the Stars,” and Cheryl Burke, two-time winner on the show, “Invitation to Dance” transports the world of professional ballroom dancing to the high seas. Guests sailing on Explorer have the opportunity to compete for the honour of best ballroom dancers at sea with the guidance of professional dancers, stylists and make-up artists.

Chosen during an evening of ballroom dancing at the beginning of each cruise, four couples are selected to participate in the “Invitation to Dance” production show later that week.
