Article by Brittany Miller • Photograph by Matt Stevens
Mount Olive College has seen a tremendous increase in the amount of campus activities available for students. The Campus Activity Board (CAB) and Julie Beck have teamed up in order to insure that students have an opportunity to get out of their dorm rooms and interact with fellow students outside of the classroom.

Not only is it important to begin taking steps to further increase student participation on campus, but also it is necessary to bridge the gap between the college and the surrounding community.

The First Baptist Church in Mount Olive is taking the initiative to get college students off campus and into a Christ-filled atmosphere.

Beginning this Sunday, February 7, the First Baptist Church is kicking off a brand new service entitled Fresh Start. This service will begin at 9 a.m. with coffee, juice, and other breakfast items being served each morning at 8:30 a.m.

Fresh Start is a part of a two-year plan created by the church called Vision 2012. This plan was put into effect in order for the church to become more intentional in their ministry.

Reverend Felicia Fox, Minister of Youth and Children at First Baptist Church, explained that the church felt God leading them to provide a place for the MOC community to connect with residents of Mount Olive. “Since many students are away from home we want to create a place for them to find support and a community.”

The service is geared to appeal to high school and college students. However, there will be a variety of people involved in the service.

The Fresh Start Band is made up of MOC students. George Mitchell is leading the band as the music intern and is using the musical talents of Brandi Whitley, Audrey Owens and Brian Parnell in delivering the music for each service.

Reverend Fox would like more college student involvement as the service continues. “As the service develops there will be more opportunities for other students to participate. We want this service to be a place where people can come and experience God in a new fresh way.”

The service is going to contain a mixture of celebration, contemplation, proclamation, and participation. The idea for the new service is to mix ancient and contemporary worship styles together.

The First Baptist Church also plans on including a variety of other creative elements to be used during worship. They will rely on visual arts, PowerPoint, video clips, drama and dance.

“The service will be unpredictable and never follow the same pattern,” explained Rev. Fox. “This will be a service where people should come expecting the unexpected.”

Worshippers may be asked to participate in the service by interacting with or creating their own art. Communion will also be a part of the service on monthly bases.

The church bus is providing transportation for students. The bus will pick students up at 8:30 a.m. in the Kornegay Arena parking lot.

In addition to Fresh Start, the church is also hosting Oasis. Oasis will be a time for college students to hangout every Monday night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The youth minister at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, Chase Smith, came up with the idea for Oasis.

The Christian Life Center youth room at First Baptist Church will be used to host the college students. There will be two flat screen televisions, an Xbox, a pool table, and a ping-pong table for everyone to enjoy. There will not be any program, Bible Study or worship time. This will be simply just hang out time.

Different churches will provide the refreshments and hosts for each night. The purpose for Oasis is to provide a casual place for members from different churches to meet and form relationships with Mount Olive College students.

First Baptist Church will host the month of February and Mount Olive Presbyterian Church is hosting the month of March. Currently, Reverend Fox is in the process of finding other churches to host the other nights.

Oasis will take place every Monday night beginning in February and lasting until May.

Branch out this semester! Take part in the activities being planned both on and off campus. Contact First Baptist Church for further information.
Article by Antonio Washington • Photography by Matt Stevens

Yesterday I was sitting in the library studying Ecology and I got a phone call from my 15 year
old sister. “Hey big bro, I wanna know everything about becoming a
vegetarian! Can you help me?”

Of course I helped her as much as caring big brother should help his little sister. This is the focus of today’s topic.

Some dietitians argue that vegetarian or vegan diets for children and young teenagers do not provide children with enough of the nutrients they need.

However, if the diet is monitored carefully this is not always the case. For some children, as well as teenagers, vegan or vegetarian diets can be just as healthy as a meat-based
diet; but parents of these young people need to ensure that the vegetarian
and vegan diets they follow have sufficient amounts of iron, calcium
and vitamin B12.

Calcium can be obtained through milk and milk like products such as yogurt and ice cream. Beans, white
bread, seeds and green vegetables are also good sources of calcium.
Eggs are an excellent source of Iron. Sesame and sunflower seeds also
contain good amounts of Iron as well. Vitamin B12 is vital for young
children and teens due to the formation of blood cells. These can be
found in most breakfast cereals. This would be an excellent start to
their mornings.

Many individuals in their teen years decide to become vegetarians. Some may think this will present a problem for non-vegetarian family members. It is possible to provide
your veggie savvy family members with simple and delicious vegetable
dishes such as casseroles, stir fried vegetables, and vegetarian curries.
You can always add meats, such as chicken, to the same dishes for the
non-vegetarian members of the family later.

Overall, it is very possible for children to have vegetarian or vegan diets and still have good health. Parents who want their children to become vegetarian, or who support
their young teen’s decision in becoming a vegetarian, need to become
aware of their specific nutritional requirements and ensure that they
are getting the proper supplements.

You can go into the gallery and see what it is like to stand inside a camera and look at the film plane or digital sensor. You need to go when the sun is shinning brightly. As your eyes adjust, you will see parts of the campus, students walking to class, and cars driving down the road. It is a very interesting educational opportunity that you do not want to miss!

Hello people of Mount Olive College (MOC). Today is a more in depth look at vegetarian diets, but it’s also a closer look into the natural supplements that are missing in a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarian food consumption is a very healthy lifestyle if EXTRA attention is placed on obtaining certain nutrients that are not normally found in high amounts of vegetarian foods:

Few vegetarians have metabolic signs that indicate a lack of vitamin B-12 deficiency leading to an increase of high blood homocysteine levels. These high levels of homocysteine can in short, damage those all important arteries and make the blood clot more easily.

Some vegetarians may not get enough CoQ10, which is a pill that gives your body an increased amount of energy.

Carnitine, which is required for breaking down of fats for metabolic energy.

Another important natural supplement missing is Creatine. This little darling gives you an increased muscle mass. Creatine is hardly found in vegetarian foods.

Omega 3’s. For some of those who haven’t heard of Omega 3’s, they are a type of fatty acid. Like stated before, these are also crucial to a vegetarian diet because they provide the breaking down fats for energy. A good way to sustain Omega 3’s in a vegetarian diet is the consumption of fish oils. Yes, it sounds gross, but it is well worth it. Trust me!

Now, because vegetarians do not consume meat, we are missing out on the all important, well needed Iron. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue. It can also to a certain extent cause memory and learning. You can steer clear of this by taking iron supplements.

Relying on a vegetarian food diet can lead to a potential shortage of certain essential nutrients needed for the body to function at its best. The amount of nutrients you may be missing depends on the type of vegetarian you are and also how strict you food intake is. Article by Roshelle M. Branch

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Haiti shook the world on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The catastrophic quake had a depth of eight kilometers and a magnitude of 7.0. It was centered about 15 kilometers west of the capital city, Port-au-Prince. It is the strongest earthquake in more than 200 years in Haiti.

Rescue workers are still finding survivors buried underneath the rubble from last week’s devastating earthquake. However, the desperate attempts to receive aid have sparked looting and violence. As a result, Haitian riot police have had to fire tear gas into the air to disperse the crowds of downtown looters.

The estimated death toll from the deadly earthquake ranges from 50,000 to 100,000, while many people lay dying on the streets. However, there are still people living in collapsed buildings, so the hope of rescuing victims continues.

Hundreds of lives have been saved by nearly 2,000 rescue workers since the earthquake. It has been reported that eight hospitals in Port-au-Prince have been damaged or destroyed. In nearby hospitals that survived the earthquake, surgeons have performed over 100 amputations in the last week. Usually the doctors would treat the wounds but since many victims had been trapped a long time before being rescued, the wounds have festered. If doctors did not amputate, patients would likely die from infection.

There have been several relief efforts for the victims of Haiti. One such effort is the Harvest Connection Disaster Relief...

Dr. Greg Day, Campus Minister, sent a campus wide email message about this relief organization through Mount Olive College webmail last week. The Student Development Office located in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center at the Mount Olive location will be collecting items until Friday, February 5th.

The list of items is as follows:

In two years as a member of the Mount Olive College baseball team, Dylan Holton has compiled 124 hits. When Holton’s finished with his baseball career, he hopes to add to his hit total in the music industry.

This past Wednesday, Holton performed a benefit concert for VH1 Save the Music Foundation. The concert took place at Southern Bank Auditorium on the Mount Olive campus at 8 p.m. He performed from his upcoming album entitled “Playing for Change.”

The VH1 Save the Music Foundation is committed to restoring instrumental music education in public schools and raising awareness about the importance of music as a part of each child’s education.

Holton first became aware of the Save the Music foundation through a friend who explained how the concert would raise money for an important cause and provide the Mount Olive community with entertainment.

“We contacted VH1,” explained Holton, who also preformed in the Second Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Concert in the fall. “Once they (VH1) heard what we were doing, they agreed to sponsor my upcoming show, which I am very thankful for.”

A senior from Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Holton joined the Mount Olive baseball program in 2008 and helped the team win the NCAA Division II National Championship that year.

During the National Finals, Holton moved from designated hitter to second base due to a season-ending injury to All-Conference second baseman Anthony Williams. In the national championship game, Holton’s three-run double contributed to Mount Olive’s five run first inning and the Trojans went on to defeat Ouachita Baptist 6-2.

Holton has a career .333 batting average with 22 stolen bases in 25 attempts, including a perfect 13-for-13 last season. He has four career home runs, perhaps the most memorable being a tie-breaking grand slam home run in the top of the ninth inning in Mount Olive’s 6-2 win at Armstrong Atlantic State in the Trojans’ 2009 season opener.

But along with baseball, music has always been a big part of Holton’s life. “My mom played piano, my dad sang and played guitar, one of my sisters studied opera, and my other sister was big into dancing, which all left me doing a little bit of everything.”

When Holton was young, he was active in sports, but stayed involved in music by taking singing, drum and piano lessons. Holton did not pick up a guitar until his late high school/early college years.

“Guitar was something I always have been around because of my father,” said Holton, “but when I moved across the country for school, a piano or a drum set was not something I could throw on my back and a guitar was, so why not.”

Holton’s father has been the biggest influence on him. “Even today, I get excited to go home and listen to him play his own original music because I don’t get to very often. I hope someday we can play together on stage somewhere – that would be unreal!”

James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, Neil Young, Jack Johnson, James Blunt, John Mayer and Jason Mraz also have influenced Holton musically.

“I play all kinds of different music,” explained Holton. “When I started getting serious about music, I recorded back in Canada doing hip-hop and R&B style music. It was a lot of fun and I still may do more of it. But over the past year, I really started getting involved in acoustic music – just me and my guitar.”

He also writes and produces all of his own lyrics and music from what he has learned so far in life. “Everyone learns from experience and when it is hard to explain how you feel or you are not sure what you feel, music helps you find just that.”

Music has become a part of Holton. “Music to me is like a vanity, something I never steer clear of. I live it on the edge. I live it with a lot of flair. I grip it and I rip it. Music is definitely something I would like to do as a career.”

Holton continued, “My purpose for playing is to help others in similar situations, or just take them away from whatever is on their mind. I think music is a break for a lot of people – takes them out of the moment and somewhere else, so when I could see that in myself and others, it made me just want to continue to play and perform.”

Holton hopes the VH1 Save the Music Concert and his forthcoming debut album – with some “catchy songs” – are just the beginning of his music career.

“I am always up for doing concerts no matter what the cause,” said Holton. “It gives people entertainment. It can be for a great cause and at the same time, I get to show others what I love to do.
As you may have noticed, the new semester at Mount Olive College (MOC) is bringing many changes to our campus. Among these changes is a massive push by Student Development to increase student involvement on campus.

CAB and Julie Beck have teamed up with the campus clubs to create a totally new and redesigned CAB event calendar for the spring semester. This increase in events is the result of a challenge by Dr. Kerstetter to increase traditional student retention and involvement here on campus. To meet that challenge, CAB and the student clubs have worked together to create a new calendar of events on campus.

There are now over 60 events planned for the upcoming semester, with 3-4 events per week, and 2-3 events on the weekend. The weekend events are a combination of CAB events and an event sponsored by a school club.

In addition to these club events, CAB is also attempting to increase cultural awareness and diversity among students. Each month of the upcoming semester features a theme. For example, January is a focus on Hispanic culture, February’s events will focus on African American history, March’s activities will have a Women’s Rights theme, and April will focus on the culture of Native Americans.

Each event is designed to be both fun and educational. In between some of the more educational and enriching programs will be fun activities, such as movie nights, with free popcorn and drinks, as well as up to 10 trivia video games, each with a theme such at the 80’s, 90’s, Reality TV, or Sports trivia.

Also coming up is the Psi Chi campus bonfire with free apple cider and s’mores. This event will be a great time for all involved. In addition to all the fun and games that will be happening at each event, there is yet another added bonus-prizes. CAB has masterminded a plan to not only entertain students, but reward them for participating in CAB events.

At each CAB event, every student will receive a wristband. At the end of each calendar month, take all your wristbands to Julie Beck. The student with the most wristbands will win a $20 gift card to Wal-Mart. Do not throw these bands away though, because at the end of the semester, the student with the most armbands will receive a large prize.

This new semester will hopefully bring greater student involvement on campus. So next time you are sitting in your dorm room or apartment bored stiff, just pull up the CAB event calendar and chances are there is something going on that will let you get out and get involved.

Many athletes can only dream of becoming a professional athlete. For some Mont Olive College alums, their dreams have become a reality.

A total of seven former Mount Olive men’s basketball players are currently playing professional basketball. Justin Melton, Brandon Streeter, Dameion Baker, Elton Coffield, Maurice Horton, Melvin Creddle and Jo Kurino are all playing in highly competitive professional basketball leagues.

Justin Melton and Brandon Streeter are both playing for Artur Nogueira in Brazil. Melton is averaging 19 points per game and Streeter is averaging 13.

Elton Coffield (pictured above) is playing for the BSW Sixers in Germany and is averaging 22 points per game, which ranks third in his league. Coffield was joined two years ago by Trojan teammate Elijah Rouse and the two led the Sixers to an undefeated season and a league championship. Rouse returned home to be with family.

Maurice Horton is averaging 14.7 points per game and is playing in Finland for Karhut Kauhajoen. Playing in Austria for Xion Dukes Klostereuburg is Melvin Creddle. Creddle is the Xion Dukes Klostereuburg starting point guard and is averaging 9.7 points per game.

Jo Kurino is playing in Japan for the Mitsubishi Diamond Dolphins. He is currently averaging 8.9 points per game. Dameion Baker has been with Tokyo Apache in Japan for four years but is not playing this season due to an injury. During the 2008-2009 season, Baker averaged 13.2 points per game.

Mount Olive head men’s basketball coach Joey Higginbotham is excited to have former student-athletes playing professional basketball overseas, “We hope to have more in the future. All of these young men were great players for Mount Olive and we are extremely proud of all them. We wish all them continuing success as they represent our college.”

Coffield said the transition from college athletics to the professional level is a challenge, “The first thing I realized was that this is a business now. A lot more is expected of me.”

Continuing to play a sport at the professional level is a job that so few athletes get the pleasure to enjoy. How was it that a nation founded on ideals of freedom and equality was also, from its birth, home to slavery?
This traveling exhibit looks for answers to this question by tracing Abraham Lincoln’s gradual transformation of his views on slavery. This exhibition explores a series of reproductions of historical documents and period photographs of the events and ideas in Lincoln’s life that ultimately led to his 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.
*The Exhibit will be Available During Normal Library Hours

On Saturday, November 21, Mount Olive College inducted four outstanding former athletes into its Athletics Hall of Fame. Matt Dudley, Billy Lee, Heather Parker Collier and Patrick Riley were the four individuals chosen by a committee chaired by the director of Athletics to be inducted this year.

Matt Dudley is a 2000 graduate and former soccer and tennis player. He holds the Trojan men’s soccer team all-time goal scoring and career-scoring records. In his college soccer career he had 40 career goals and 93 career points. Former head men’s soccer coach, Philmore George, described Matt as a player who worked hard and earned the respect of his teammates.

Billy Lee, described as the man who never saw a shot he did not like, was inducted into the hall of fame for his outstanding contributions to the Trojan men’s basketball team. In the two years that he played at Mount Olive, Lee scored over 1,000 points, earned All-Conference honors, selected as the All-Tournament Team of the Pickle Classic both years and was a two-time Mount Olive College Athlete of the Year winner. Following his successfully athletic career, he went on to successful coaching career for thirty years. Among his greatest successes as a basketball coach was his 18-year stint at Campbell University as head basketball coach.

The only woman to be inducted this year was Heather Parker Collier from the class of 1998 and a former softball payer. Collier was the first student athlete in the history of the school to be named an Academic All-American. She was also a two-time All –Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference outfielder, holds the single-season records for most hits and most triples, holds the records for most triples in Mount Olive College softball history and was named the 1997 Mount Olive College Female Athlete of the Year. After a rather emotional speech, Collier expressed much gratitude for her opportunity to play softball at Mount Olive College.

Patrick Riley is a former baseball player and 1984 graduate. Riley was on the baseball team that came one game shy of reaching the National Junior College World Series. He was the 1983 Eastern Conference Player of the Year, earned All-American honorable mention, batted .414 in 1983, led the Trojans to the championship game of the Eastern Conference Tournament and was named the 1983-84 Male Athlete of the Year. After his stay here at Mount Olive College he went on to play two years at Western Carolina University. Riley continues to give back to the community by being heavily involved in youth leagues, helping to mold the young student-athlete’s for the future.

All four athletes were recognized at half time of the Mount Olive College men’s basketball game verses Virginia Union University. Each individual received a plaque and will have a duplicate plaque hanging in Kornegay Arena honoring their accomplishments.

Michael Ratley of Hope Mills and Nancy Galeno of Burgaw “relished” the moment as they were crowned Pickle Classic King and Queen on Saturday during the 44th annual Pickle Classic Tournament held in conjunction with Mount Olive College’s Alumni Weekend.

Twenty-four students were nominated by their peers to participate in this year’s Pickle Classic Court. The winners were selected through an interview process with the Mount Olive Jaycees.

Galeno joins the ranks of 35 Pickle Classic Queens that have come before her. A senior visual communications major, she is an Honors student and is active in many campus clubs and organizations. She currently serves as both marketing director of the Campus Activity Board (CAB) and treasurer of the Student Government Association Executive Cabinet. She has also served as a freshmen mentor. Galeno is the daughter of Catalina Galeno and Noe Verdin. She attends the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Wallace.

The Pickle Classic King competition was introduced in 1997 when SGA petitioned for an equal male counterpart to the Pickle Queen.

Ratley, a senior agriculture business major, is the son of Anthony and Bonnie Ratley. He is an Honors student and serves as the vice president of the Student Government Association.

Pickle Classic King and Queen will represent Mount Olive College at the NC Pickle Festival and the Mount Olive Christmas Parade, among other functions.

On November 18th, Mount Olive College (MOC) had its annual “Swap Day” and I had the rare privilege of switching places with Dr. Kerstetter from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We started the morning by giving each other instructions for the day. My assignment to him was just to show up to class and take notes! He assigned me the duty of helping with Alumni Weekend. I had to compile a list of things that I thought the MOC Alumni would want to see or do when they came for the weekend. I also was assigned the task of walking around campus to make sure that the buildings were tidy and presentable and went around to ask faculty members if they needed anything for Alumni weekend.

At 10:30 a.m., I had a very informative meeting with Dr. Greg Day, campus minister. Dr. Day presented me with a weekly report of his activities and I was also able to ask him questions. When asked, “How do you feel about the spiritual state of the College?” He stated that he was concerned but feels that MOC is right on the verge of something exciting, like a small fire just ignited. I really appreciated how he listened to me and valued my opinions as a “student”.

I appreciated Mrs. Katherine Gardner, assistant to the president, very much because she was so helpful and extremely nice. In fact everyone in the Poole Administration Building was really nice and supportive. My life as president was so great because I was able to appreciate the president from a student’s eye.

I liked having the phone answered for me, and I really liked Dr. Kerstetter’s office. His office was decorated with lots foliage, pictures of the MOC baseball championship team and jelly beans!! It was very neat, organized and had a cozy atmosphere. His office has a really nice view in which you can see the whole campus. One thing Dr. Kerstetter told me was that he never talks to a person from behind a desk which shows that he likes to interact with people.

You can always see him walking around campus or cheering at a MOC sporting event. At the end of our “Swap Day”, Dr. Kerstetter allowed me to ask him some questions. I asked him what a typical day as president was like. He said that his “schedule fills up and changes direction quickly,” and that he tries not to stay in his office too much because he likes to get out and interact with people. I also asked if the transition to president of MOC had been a difficult one. He said, “Yes and no because the culture is different.” He also noted that he has enjoyed learning about Mount Olive’s culture, history and church affiliations.

Do I think I am cut out to be the president of MOC? Of course I do, but for now I shall leave it to the professionals. Oh and one more thing…Dr. Kerstetter gave me his jar of Jelly Beans as a gift, how awesome!!

Some other students and faculty participating in “Swap Day” were Chris Stroud who switched places with Dr. Sandy Maddox, assistant director of the Agribusiness Center and Michael Quintas who switched places with Dr. David Dommer, assistant professor of biology.

Calling all divas to the runway!! On Friday, November 13, Residence Life put on the first ever “Fall Fashion Show” in the Southern Bank Auditorium. To start the show, the contestants performed a Michael Jackson tribute dressed in black and white. The three clothing categories were Business, Casual and Party.

The judges for the night were Dr. Greg Day, Dr. Rhonda Bryant, April Stevens and Michelle Thomas. The hosts for the event were Resident Advisors Christy Liles and Destinie Lane Lindsay. The talented models for the night were Shaunisha Freeman, DaLaundra Gomez, Patrice “Chi Chi” Clarke, Stephanie Sunderland, Bree Reid, Ashley Sawyer, Wislande Maxey and Brittany Watson.

In the first category of Business Wear, the outfits ranged from nurses scrubs to business suits. In the Casual Wear round, it was all about the shoes and the ladies really stepped up their game during the Party Wear round. After a quick birthday shout out to Miss Shaunisha Freeman, the judges quietly deliberated. Envelope please…and the winner is Miss DaLaundra Gomez!!

Alright everybody, let’s get your party on and bust a move!! On Saturday night, Mount Olive College (MOC) students came out to the SuperJam that was held in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. The night was amazing and lots of students came out to support the event put on by Residence Life. It was great time to show off your dance moves, catch up, and talk with friends. The DJ of the night was Maurice Wallace from Maurice Starr Entertainment. He really knew how to keep the jams coming. The coolest part about his set up was that he played music videos on the ceiling of the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center using a projector. It was great to be able to watch music videos while you danced!! The weekend activities were a blast and the students really enjoyed the on-campus activities.

Hello Mount Olive College Faculty, staff and students! If you did not attend the 10th Annual Criminal Justice Seminar on November 21, at Rodgers Chapel, you missed a treat. Sergeant Mark Ketchum from the Jacksonville Police Department was the guest speaker. Sergeant Ketchum’s topic was, “Over the Counter Drugs: A Challenge for Law Enforcement.” Over the counter drugs were said to be very dangerous if not used properly. Sergeant Ketchum stated, “Over the counter pills are being abused and can be addicting, therefore, take precaution when using any over the counter pills.” As always, Dr. Fox did an excellent job presiding over the seminar.

The seminar seems to get better every year. Hope to see you next year for the 11th Annual Criminal Justice Seminar.

On November 20, Barton College matches up with Virginia Union at 5:30 p.m. Following that game will be the Trojan Men’s basketball team facing Mars Hill College at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday’s tournament will conclude with Barton verses Mars Hill at 5:30 p.m. and the MOC Trojans verses Virginia Union at 7:00 p.m.

The annual basketball tournament began back in 1965 when Mount Olive College struck ground at its present day location on 630 Henderson Street. In the fall of that year the men’s basketball program had its first Holiday Invitational Tournament. At the time Mount Olive did not have a gym on campus, the only building on campus was Henderson Hall. The first tournament had to be held at Mount Olive Middle School. Throughout the early years of the College gyms such as Southern Wayne High School and North Duplin High School played host for the tournament. It was not until 1984 that the Trojan’s finally had a gym of its own to call home.

Gradually over the years the tournament has evolved and adopted the name “Pickle Classic” due to the continued support and sponsorship from the Mount Olive Pickle Company.

Since 1997, the Pickle Classic tradition has been joined with Alumni Weekend. Alumni Weekend is an opportunity for alumni to return to campus and engage in a variety of activities such as the annual golf tournament, lectures, luncheons, chapel services and of course catch up with old friends. With both the Pickle Classic and Alumni Weekend being held at the same time it is a great opportunity for relationships to form between former and present students.

Make sure you check out the all the excitement happening around campus this week. Farm Bureau’s strength depends on its members analyzing agricultural issues and successfully developing solutions. The Collegiate Discussion Meet is an activity designed to build these critical skills in young, active leaders in agriculture.

“This is a unique opportunity for our students to build basic discussion skills, develop a keen understanding of important agricultural issues and explore how to reach a consensual solution,” stated Dr. Sandy Maddox, advisor for the Mount Olive College team.

Mount Olive College, NC State University, and NC A&T State University were the sites for the semifinal rounds of the discussion meet held on Friday, November 6. Edward Olive of Benson; H. D. Grady of Pink Hill; Joshua Singleton of Goldsboro; and Larry Edwards of Roseboro, all sophomores at MOC participated in the semifinal round from which two contenders were selected to move to the State level final round.

“All the students participating did extremely well, it was very difficult for the judges to select the two that moved on to the final round,” stated Maddox who accompanied Ed Olive and H. D. Grady as they moved to the final round on Saturday at the Farm Bureau State Office in Raleigh.

The final discussion meet round consisted of six students, the top two participants from each campus, discussing two pertinent questions related to agricultural issues. While the State winner was Andrew Cagle, a junior at NC State, both Olive and Grady received runner-up positions and were provided $100 cash awards.

“The discussion meet afforded all of the participants an unprecedented opportunity to discuss topics that will directly impact our chosen careers in agriculture,” explained Olive. “It was a great experience and I look forward to competing again next year.”

“I would encourage any students at MOC involved in agriculture to pursue this opportunity,” reiterated Grady. “Through preparation and participation in the event I have vastly broadened my knowledge of the critical issues in agriculture. The discussion meet forced us to step out of our comfort zone and served as an educational growth experience for all of us.”

NC Farm Bureau field representative and Mount Olive College graduate Audrey Brown was instrumental in offering the opportunity for participation to MOC students. All participants will be invited to Raleigh in January to attend the Young Farmer and Rancher Conference conducted by NC Farm Bureau.

On Monday, November 9th, several Mount Olive College (MOC) students joined together to enjoy the talent of their fellow students.

After Vice President Keith Woodard went over the rules and pledged in new members, the crowd snapped their fingers as Jessica Dennis, a published writer, read her poems entitled “In Their Territory,” “Dance,” and “Questions.”

Mason Carroll delivered an amazing cover of “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, and with her goddess like voice, Katie Duprey sang “I Lie” by Taylor Swift and “Here By Me” by Three Doors Down.

Demetrius Wooten poured out his heart with his poem entitled “Beauty” and Michael Saul and Ryan Kovacs performed “Your Guardian Angel” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and “Don't Save Me” by Sing It Loud.

Special guest and recording artist Dylan Holton performed the cover “Collide” by Howie Day and delivered a soulful original song called “Until You Can.”

To keep the creative juices flowing, Cameron Deal and Adam Brown, with his 12 string Fender guitar, performed “Whisky Lullaby” by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss and “God Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts.

Adam Brown also performed a solo performance by Click Five called “Just the Girl”.

Keith Woodard and Adam Brown performed “Landon in London” by 3 Doors Down and Ryan Kovacs also known as “The Burton Gene” sang his self-written song named “Y-cart.”

To end this talent filled night, Dylan Holton closed the show with two original songs entitled “Hold Your Breath for Me” and “Red Light Kisses”.

Michael Quintas, president of the Madd Hatters Society, announced that the next meeting will be held on November 30th. Spring happenings for the Madd Hatters include an Open Mic Night to be held as a weekend activity; a possible DVD showcasing the “Greatest Hits of Open Mic Night”; and $1 Movie Nights in Southern Bank Auditorium.

If you are curious about attending or performing at The Madd Hatters Open Mic Night, look for the fliers or contact Michael Quintas, president (MCQ0497@moc.edu), Keith Woodard, vice president (KGW1674@moc.edu) or Nancy Galeno, secretary (NGG8098@moc.edu).
