I do not believe in restrictive fad diets, useless infomercial gadgets, or worthless, and often harmful, diet supplements and 'fat burners'. The road to a healthier, fit body begins with a lifestyle of sensible exercise and nutrition.

<geo:lat>42.967684</geo:lat><geo:long>-71.448287</geo:long>

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/thetruthaboutdiets" type="application/rss+xml" /><feedburner:emailServiceId>thetruthaboutdiets</feedburner:emailServiceId><feedburner:feedburnerHostname>http://feedburner.google.com</feedburner:feedburnerHostname><atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com" />

Are You Going to Finish Strong?

So you've built up a ton of motivation for your next weight loss effort. You got a gym membership and as of tomorrow you vow you'll stop eating crap for good.

You start off great. You feel good. You look better. The pounds are coming off.

Then you slip up. You fall down. You haven't seen the gym in 3 weeks, and you had donuts 3 times at the office this week.

That great start isn't so important now, is it? What's important is how you're going to finish.

Will you finish strong?

~Dave

Well, fish oil contains EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), commonly referred to as omega-3 fatty acids or just omega-3's. These omega-3 PUFAs have a number of beneficial effects on the body, including the joints.

In any type of arthritis, pain comes from two main sources:

Exposed and irritated nerves in the bone which are vulnerable to friction and chemical irritants when the protective cartilage layer is destroyed. Inflammation which causes the synovial membrane of the joint to swell, grow, and produce excessive amounts of joint fluid ("water on the knee").

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce inflammation by interfering with the production of inflammation-producing chemicals which stimulate pain nerves in the tissues.

While it is true that there are some vegetarian sources of omega-3's like walnuts, flaxseed (linseed) oil, canola oil, soybean oil, etc., all of these are short chain polyunsaturated acids which must be converted by the body into longer chain PUFAs to be useful. Since fish oil already contains long chain PUFAs, it's the best dietary source.

In fact, fish oil is so effective, that some studies have shown that it can relieve pain symptoms even in cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA is a serious autoimmune condition that can affect joints and soft tissues throughout the entire body.

One study showed that fish oil reduced morning stiffness and joint tenderness and increased the effectiveness of NSAIDs in patients with RA.1 Another study suggested that the long-term use of fish oil (over 12 weeks at 6 grams a day) may decrease the need for NSAIDs and other RA medications.2,3

Finally, a recent Australian study showed that fish oil reduced the use of NSAIDs by 75% in RA patients and reduced inflammation-causing chemicals by up to 41%.4

When you add these benefits to the others known to be associated with fish oil like lowering triglycerides, "thinning" the blood (reducing the risk of clots), and benefitting both the heart and brain (60% of the brain is fat and half of that is DHA), there is no doubt that it's the king of joint supplements.

When taking fish oil supplements, it is also a good idea to take vitamin E (3 mg for every 1 gram of fish oil) to protect against oxidation. A garlic supplement can also be taken to prevent increased levels of LDL cholesterol.

References:

Mayo Clinic, National Standard Patient Monograph 2008.
Geusens, P et al. "There’s never been another health event like this, where so many people stand to benefit from the expertise of true professionals for free” says Moy who has been working flat out to make this year’s 12 days a success.

“Fitness professionals from around the globe have contributed hundreds of e-books, reports, videos, meal plans and other free gifts in their hope of making 2009 the year that anyone, regardless or their location, financial situation or past failures, can finally reach their fitness goals and make those New Year's Resolutions a reality once and for all.”

Perhaps the best part of the 12 Days of Fitness giveaway is that regardless of a persons health or fitness goals, there are going to be gifts specifically designed to help them achieve success.

"We've received gifts designed for busy mom's, elite athletes, bodybuilders, back pain sufferers and pretty much anyone else you can imagine covering everything from fat loss to rehabilitation and everything in between.

There literally will be something for everyone this year and all of it free, making it, without a doubt, one of the most important gifts anyone will receive this year. After all, what’s more important than health?”

The 12 days of gift giving starts December 10th but those interested are urged to visit www.12daysoffitness.com right away to sign up for their free gifts.

Once enrolled, participants will get a daily email telling them how to access each of the new gifts that are being added each day as well as a reminder on how to access previous gifts.

To guarantee a healthy start to 2009, simply visit www.12daysoffitness.com today.

Leg lifts? Sit ups?

How about none of the above?

The truth is, none of those are the best way to lose belly fat and get a flat stomach (dare I say a six-pack?).

In fact, if you’re doing endless crunches or other ab exercises in a quest for your six-pack, you might even be making your situation worse.

You see, crunches and other exercises that target the rectus abdominis (your six-pack) work to make that muscle stronger. Do stronger muscles normally get smaller when you work them?

Uh, no. So there’s mistake one.

Mistake two is that when you keep overworking your abs like that, they’ll actually become shortened and tight, pulling your ribcage down towards your pelvis, and eventually causing your lower back to round. Aside from the obvious potential back problems that presents, pulling your ribs down, throwing your posture out of whack, and making yourself look shorter is not a recommended way to a trim waist.

Then, in order to lose that belly fat, you need to burn a lot of fat. You do this through building and using lots of muscle. Crunches cause very little muscle activation, thus burn an insignificant amount of fat (if any at all). Mistake number three.

And just because you’re working an area, that doesn’t mean you’re burning the fat from that area. Your body simply doesn’t work that way and spot reduction is just a myth.

So, if endless crunches aren’t the answer, what is? Endless cardio, right?

Wrong.

This will be a whole other blog post, but for now just believe me that hours and hours on the treadmill is not the way to your six pack.

What you need to do are muscle building, compound exercises. And you’re thinking, what the hell is a compound exercise, right?

That’s an exercise that uses multiple muscle groups at the same time. Think squats. Think squat rows. Think kettlebell swings. Think rows. Think get ups.

These exercises activate a lot of muscle as you do them, which burns lots of calories. Plus they build lots of muscle as you recover, which burns more calories all day. In The Body Transformation Course 2.0 I go into much more detail on this, but suffice it to say that since muscle tissue is your main fat-burning furnace, the more muscle tissue you have, the more fat you’ll burn all day.

My bootcamps are designed for fat loss, and participants are doing only compound, muscle-building exercises in those camps and getting great results. The workouts in The Body Transformation Course 2.0 are designed the same way.

No wrist curls here. No chest flyes. Mainly compound movements that use lots of muscles, build muscle, and burn lots of calories.

That’s how you lose belly fat and get six-pack abs.

Now I know many of you women out there just read that and got scared by the whole “muscle-building” thing.

Don’t be.

I’m not making bodybuilders out of anyone and you won’t build big, bulky muscles if you do dumbbell squats. You know how Jessica Simpson worked out to get those legs she had in that awful “Dukes of Hazzard” movie?

She did tons of squats, lunges, and more squats. I don’t think her legs were big and bulky. So stay with me, it’s time to start thinking differently if you really want to start to get results.

~Dave

Instead, you'll learn what eating right really means and how to lose fat for good by eating well and following a simple exercise program.

Different people learn differently, so the course includes over six hours of videos, but also provides the content in convenient ebook and MP3 audio formats.

Like I said, it is still a couple of weeks away from being available to the public. But, I'm going to give away copies of the complete program to the first 10 people who fill out this short form.

Why am I giving it away? A couple of reasons.

One, since I want to make this the best course possible, I'd like some feedback from real people who are looking to lose weight.

And two, since the program is new, very few people have seen it. I'm confident that the people who I give it to will be so happy with it that they will allow me to use their testimonial on my web site.

So, yes, I guess you can call it an ethical bribe.

So, if you're interested in losing weight, are looking for an approach that improves your overall lifestyle so that you can keep the weight off forever, and would be willing to provide me with your comments, then be one of the first 10 people to fill out this form and I'll send you the whole thing on a data DVD.

Thanks.

~Dave

Examples include thoughts, ideas, theories, gestures, practices, fashions, habits, songs, and dances. Memes propagate themselves and can move through the cultural sociosphere in a manner similar to the contagious behavior of a virus." (thanks Wikipedia)

In the blog world, a meme is a set of questions a person is asked, and is then sent along from blog to blog.

So here goes.

6 Random Things You Wouldn't Know About Me Unless You Asked

I lopped off one of my big toes with a lawnmower. The left one in case you're curious.

I once spent a summer working for a company that turned trash into energy. My very important responsibilities included shoveling the trash and making sure the high-pressure pipes full of trash didn't get clogged.

I broke both of my ankles playing football. Not at the same time.

I once carried around about 48lbs more fat on my body than I do now, but I was only 30lbs heavier than I am now. You can figure it out. Think.

I do a mean hokey-pokey with my 2 year old daughter and her Hokey-Pokey Elmo.

I once went out to dinner with James Doohan (Scottie from Star Trek). It was the first time I ever ate sushi. Mr. Doohan has since passed away, but I now list sushi as my favorite food. Thank you Mr. Scot.

So there you go. There's my deepest secrets (well, sort of). Now, according to meme rules, I'm supposed to pass this on and see where it goes. So, the following people should consider themselves memed:

Barry Lovelace, premier volleyball training expert, animal lover, and good friend.

Bill Millios, friend, business partner, filmmaker, and owner of Back Lot Films, Inc.

Thomas Sjolshagen, long-time client, friend and all around computer geek.

~Dave

Now they don't say that explicitly, but they push that point quite strongly.

Well, much of the table sugar sold in this country is made from sugar beets, so I guess that must be good for you too.

Please just stop. With an election coming up, we've already got enough stupid commercials on TV. We don't need any more.

Too much sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and other sweeteners are one of the major causes of the obesity problem in this country, as well as a big contributor to the spike in Type II diabetes that has occurred in the past two decades.

High fructose corn syrup still sucks and you should avoid products that contain it. If you're just a little pudgy around the middle, you may pat your belly and chuckle about those few extra beers you had last night, but it is no laughing matter.

Two studies recently looked at the cardiometabolic health of three categories of white adults: normal weight, overweight, and obese. Researchers measured blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting plasma glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and assessed whether the study subjects were insulin resistant.

What they found was eye opening -- 23.5% of "normal weight" adults were metabolically abnormal -- and surprisingly, the research done by Wildman's group found that approximately 30% of the "obese" group was actually metabolically pretty healthy.1 In the "overweight" group, it was split about 50-50 between those who were metabolically healthy and those who were at increased risk according to these measures.

So to summarize, the study found the risk for heart disease and diabetes in the three groups to be: normal body weight, 25% risk; overweight, 50% risk; obese, 70% risk.

Another study by Stefan et al. found that 25% of obese people did not have early signs of heart disease as determined by their blood vessel thickness and an oral glucose tolerance test used to measure insulin sensitivity.2 Nor were these people categorized at high risk according to their lipid profiles and blood pressure readings.

Both of these studies assessed whether central adiposity (belly fat) raised the risk of heart disease the most, as has been seen in other studies. According to the American Heart Association, if a man's waistline is greater than 39 inches and a woman's waistline is greater than 34 inches, it's time to take action.

Interestingly, the Stefan study found that in already obese patients, the most "at risk" fat was not belly fat, but liver fat. However, in normal and overweight people, belly fat did increase risk the most. (This may be because it is very unusual to see liver fat accumulating in normal weight people.) The Wildman study also found that normal weight or slightly overweight patients are more at risk for heart disease if they have belly fat.

The blogs are now flying about this research. I have seen statements like, "These studies once again prove that just because you are obese doesn't mean you are unhealthy." And indeed these studies show that if you are obese, you have a 25 to 30% chance of being in the group that hasn't yet developed heart disease or diabetes. But the overwhelming number of studies consistently shows that the vast majority of obese people do have heart disease and/or diabetes.

Even in the Wildman and Stefan studies, only 25 to 30% were escaping risk so far. The other 70% were at risk. In the normal weight category, 75% were metabolically healthy and 25% were at risk. I would take those odds any day.

I know some obese individuals will want to hang on to that 25% chance they may not be unhealthy just because they are severely overweight -- but there are other health problems that can develop too. Certainly if you fall into the obese category, you should at least be thoroughly evaluated to find out.

What are the take home messages from this research? You can be at cardiometabolic risk even if you are at a normal body weight, especially if you have increased waist size. This is not news to me and most health practitioners, but it is a big wake up call for many people.

Increased belly fat/waist size puts you at increased risk for heart disease and diabetes -- and the more overweight you become, the greater your risks. So, no matter who you are, you should take steps to prevent insulin resistance and control your weight to have the greatest chance of avoiding these two devastating diseases.

We also need to further study the 25% of the obese population to see what is keeping them from developing insulin resistance. For instance, the Wildman study found that increased physical activity reduced risk. Other studies have found that increased antioxidant intake from foods like green tea and turmeric may prevent damage to insulin receptors from the oxidative stress that can cause insulin resistance.

Perhaps these individuals have better sources of, or utilization of, the mineral chromium which helps regulate blood sugar. Or, they might have increased vitamin C intake from fruits, vegetables, and supplements which reduces the risk of insulin resistance and diabetes.3-4

Determining which factors can best lower risk of heart disease and diabetes, even in people who have not been able to lose weight, would be of tremendous value.

References

Stefan N, et al. The results might surprise you. You can read the details in a post from Dr. John Berardi, who was part of the research team.

Here's the link to the post.

~Dave

Diets DO Work

That's right. Diets do work.

Now most fitness pros will tell you that diets don't work, but I'm here to tell you that they do.

Atkins, Zone, Ornish, Oprah's latest, you name it, they'll help you lose weight.

What they won't help you do is keep it off. For that, you need a healthy lifestyle and need to know how to eat right and exercise.

The reason the vast majority of people gain their weight back after going on a diet has nothing to do with the diet at all. It has to do with the fact that when they stop the diet, they go back to eating like crap.

That's why you gain the weight back.

If you eat like crap, go on a diet and lose weight, then go back to eating like crap, you'll gain the weight back and end up fatter than when you started.

If you learn to eat healthy and exercise as a lifestyle first, then diet to lose fat, and go back to your healthy eating lifestyle, you have a very good chance of not gaining the weight back.

Problem is, most people don't do that.

In my 12-week weight loss course, I spend the first NINE WEEKS getting people to learn how to eat right and exercise, before I introduce them to a shorter term program designed to melt off serious fat.

That's why people succeed with my method, and why Oprah has been losing the same 50 lbs over and over for the past 10 years.

Diets DO work, IF you already know the rules of eating right, exercising, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Diets DON'T work if you eat like crap and think going on a diet for a month will cure everything.

~Dave

That doesn't mean I'm an Atkins follower though. And unlike what the lead paragraph in the article implies, this study didn't prove Atkins is the way to go at all.

This study followed 322 moderately obese people for two years, and broke them into 3 groups. One followed a low-fat diet plan (Metabolism Makeover participants know what I think of that), one group followed a low-carb plan, and one group followed a Mediterranean style diet.

The low-fat diet — no more than 30 percent of calories from fat — restricted calories and cholesterol and focused on low-fat grains, vegetables and fruits as options. The Mediterranean diet had similar calorie, fat and cholesterol restrictions, emphasizing poultry, fish, olive oil and nuts.

The low-carb diet set limits for carbohydrates, but none for calories or fat. It urged dieters to choose vegetarian sources of fat and protein.

So what happened?

The dieters lost between 6.5 on the low-fat plan and 10 lbs on the low-carb and Mediterranean plans.

IN TWO YEARS!

That doesn't mean one diet is better than the other. In fact, it means that none of them are better than the others.

If you've got 322 moderately obese people dieting for two freakin years and the best they can do is lose 10 lbs, then your plan sucks. Plain and simple.

Research like this pisses me off because it sends the wrong message. Since it was funded by an Atkins advocacy group, you certainly won't see any of the researchers telling you the results sucked, but that's the reality of it.

Just by simply eating right and exercising properly, an otherwise healthy, moderately obese person can easily lose 10 lbs in a month or less.

And don't worry all you low-fat advocates, they'll be research next week that says low-fat is the way to go. Just wait.

Researchers need to get out of the lab and into the real world. I don't need idiots like this telling me what works and what doesn't, I see it every day. I can also see that what they did didn't work at all.

If you want to know what really works, go to www.HealthyWeightInnerCircle.com and read "The Ridiculously Simple Rules to Good Nutrition", or better yet, start following the Metabolism Makeover Course.

~Dave

It's about 30 minutes long, but that's because I go into detail and cover lots of info.

And yes, the video is free. I mean, c'mon. Smoking sucks.

I actually had someone tell me the reason they didn't want to quit smoking was because they'd gain weight if they did.

Yeah, that would be a lot worse than bronchitis, emphysema, COPD, stroke, heart disease, mouth cancer, or lung cancer. You'll be getting pushed around in your wheel chair at age 60 with your oxygen tank at your side, but at least you'll still be a size 6.

Listen, I know nicotine is an addictive drug and that smoking is a difficult addiction to break.

Fine.

But if you started smoking within the last 35 years or so, the dangers of smoking were well known and you were dumb enough to start anyway. So, sorry, you get no pity from me for your addiction.

You made a choice to put a burning stick in your mouth and inhale, knowing full well that it could give you cancer, heart disease, and all of the other diseases listed above.

That's just not very bright.

Oh and by the way, while your friends and family may not say it to your face, you smell awful. And when you try and cover it up with that cheap perfume or cologne, it only makes it 100% worse. Your teeth are turning brown, and your breath smells just like the tailpipe on your car.

But, please, don't quit smoking. I wouldn't want you to risk putting on a couple of pounds.

~Dave

The site is a private, members-only resource exclusively for people who are serious about losing weight and getting healthy.

“Healthy Weight Inner Circle gives a person 24/7 access to the private, members-only area where they’ll find a wealth of exclusive information, including articles, exercise video clips, nutrition information, recipes, workouts, discussion forums, and much more,” says Dave Soucy, Fitness Expert, Author, Certified Personal Trainer, and owner of Perfect Fit, LLC. “What members WON’T find are any fads, gimmicks, or diets. Our community is for people who have finally realized that fad diets and gimmicks just don’t work. Healthy Weight Inner Circle is about losing weight and getting fit for a lifetime, and we help people do that by getting them to stop focusing on being thin, and start focusing on being healthy. If people focus on being healthy first, then thin will come.”

The site will feature new weekly and monthly workouts specifically designed to burn fat and build muscle, with members having access to the complete archive of all past workouts as well. With close to 100 exercise video clips (and more being added) members will learn exactly how to perform each move safely and effectively, either at the gym or in the privacy of their own home. In addition, HWIC's Recipe Box has close to 100 easy-to-make recipes for appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, and more. Also, there are articles that expose the incredible amount of misinformation regarding diets and weight loss that circulates in the marketplace. Finally, the HWIC Discussion Forums will give community members the opportunity to interact, have discussions, and get answers to their questions on fitness, nutrition, fat loss, motivation, and more.

“Healthy Weight Inner Circle is different from the thousands of diet sites on the internet,” adds Soucy, “as my goal is to get people to STOP dieting. The diet industry is a $50 billion business built on hype and false promises. Healthy Weight Inner Circle is here to help members break the dieting cycle once and for all. If they do, I know they’ll finally lose their extra weight for good. I’m so confident in this that I’ve removed all of the risk and decided to let anyone try out the site for a full 14 days for just $1. If they don’t agree with me, they can cancel any time. But, I know once they experience the HWIC community, they’ll never go back to their old dieting ways again.”

Soucy also operates Perfect Fit Fitness Bootcamps in Manchester, NH and is the author of several works including The Caveman's Guide to Fitness, The 17-Week Body Transformation Course, The Perfect Fit Personal Fitness and Workout Journal, and the healthy-eating cookbook Eating Right Made Simple.

More information can be found at www.HealthyWeightInnerCircle.com.

Are you just forcing yourself to go from exercise to exercise so you can "just get through your workout"? Is your sense of accomplishment that even though you didn't want to do it, you dragged your butt to the gym and got through your workout?

Or, when you are working out, are you doing it with the intention of getting better? Getting better by losing more fat, gaining more muscle, doing one more rep, lifting 10 more lbs, etc?

If you start walking into your workouts with the mindset that you want to be a bit better than your last workout, I guarantee you will get better results than if you are just trying to get through it.

~Dave
