Why feature this book on a hip hop blog? Well, I know for a fact that most of you are videogame fans, and also I have seen some of the drawings used in this book end up on walls and canvases by writers worldwide, so its a great reference book. Any fans of any Capcom games at all should get on this, as it s around £35 on import in Forbidden Planet and although in Japanese, this is one book where the pics say it all.

If you know want to get a crash course in hip-hop history there are a couple of key films you need to watch…Style Wars is one of them. The documentary, which covered the four elements of hip-hop, was first aired way back in 1983 on PBS. According to the film producer’s there was more than 29 hours of additional footage that never made the cut. So for the upcoming Blu-ray release the filmmakers are going back to the vaults and cutting the additional never-before-seen footage.

The DVD plays out like a video dictionary - literally - with scratches laid out alphabetically, and arranged in a book-like format with flip through buttons to quickly navigate through the pages. One side of the screen scrolls text on how to do the scratch technically, while the other side shows a video demo (which can be made full screen) on how it should look and sound. The scratches are demonstrated by the best of the best - everyone from Q (and his many aliases) to Tyra From Saigon, Flare, Rafik, Z-Trip and more.

No title, no liner notes, no song titles - no nuffin', 'cept for 6 tracks of insanely dope psychedelic fuzz-funk featuring The Best Drummer In The World, aka Heliocentrics / Soul Destroyers sticksdude, Malcolm Catto. FUCK HE CAN DRUM! Fully loaded with a ton of bugged-out library record analogue synths, buzzing guitars and massive drums, the last LP that sounded like this was... well...Catto's own Mo'Wax LP, the criminally underrated Popcorn Bubblefish. I know absolutely nuffin' 'bout 'MRR-ADM', apart from the fact that they come from LA and have produced the best instrumental record of the year so far. It's like listening to the out-takes from Lalo Schifrin's Dirty Harry OST. Limited to a 1000 pressing, if you don't got this already, better make sure you get this shit. Essential funk and bboy listening. Live drum fans will freak over this like I did.

Sadly IZ the Wiz (Mike Martin) is no longer with us.
IZ collapsed at his brother’s home in Florida at around 3:00am Wednesday morning. He was rushed to the hospital, eventually succumbing to heart failure.

Iz The Wiz is without question one of New York City’s most prolific writers of all time. He holds the title of the All time All City King of New York City Subways, and only one person holds that prestigious honor. In aka Kill 3 is credited with the most extensive all-city bomb in NYC during 1975 and 76, but Iz was the longest reigning all-city king in NYC history, taking the title many times throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Iz was well known for his throw-ups in the mid 1970s on the IND and BMT subway divisions. In the late 1970s he broadened his focus by working on top-to-bottoms, burners and scenery whole cars on the prestigious 2 and 5 lines of the IRT subway division. During this period he simultaneously maintained all-city throw-up king status. He painted for a variety of top level crews. He has served as president of The Master Blasters and the Queens division of Prisoners Of Graffiti. He has also painted for The Odd Partners, The Crew, The Three Yard Boys and others too numerous to mention. Iz appeared in the documentary film Style Wars and portrayed a transit police detective in the film Wild Style. His work has been displayed in museums and galleries throughout the world. Iz played a major role in the development of writing and provided inspiration for every generation of writer that exists. Hailing from Queens Iz took over the city subway system line by line.
During his career, there was a time when he was doing at least 100 throw-ups every night, for an entire year. The dedication and love for writing is apparent in all of his works, from the burners on the trains, to the sketches on paper, and the canvases that capture the essence of writing, Iz often drops little side notes next to his the pieces, a little message that takes a minute to sink in and when it does, you always get a grin.
Iz is also known for his epic role played in the film Style Wars. His witty remarks remain some of the most quoted words and phrases in the writing lexicon. When just the words you have said 20 years ago are recognized and used in current conversations, you have successfully made your mark in the world. In the film Iz was asked “when will you stop”, and he replied “will come back every now and then to let people know I am still around.” The true beauty is the fact that he never left and continues to bless the people with gems that capture the essence of what graffiti writing all about.

K.I.D went onto recording a full Lp for Kold Sweat, and certain tracks for this appeared on the Raw Flavours compilation Lps also on Kold Sweat. (Check out the little kid on the intro to Fatal Attraction by KID, its his son, Marcus, who was bout 4 when he recorded it). I have the LP on mp3 and will up it if theres enough interest
