Rex Marks said. She was transported by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Beckett said she thought she heard a car-theft siren going off in the street, when someone pounded on her door about 8 a.m and told her to get out.

"I opened the door and the smoke was bad in the hall," Beckett said. Using her walker, Beckett made it to another door leading outside, but saw embers and was afraid she couldn't get down the back stairs.

She then went back to the front door and opened it again, only to see thicker smoke in the building's common hallway.

"I started yelling 'Help me!'" Beckett said. "I heard someone coming down the hall and they went right by me.

"She heard me, and came back and she carried me out to a couple doors down and laid in in the grass," Beckett said. "She was a paramedic and I think her name was Amy."

Beckett said she probably lost everything in the fire but would get help from her family. "I'll be OK," she said.

Beverly Parr of the western Nevada County chapter of the Red Cross said the residents of the building were "All elderly, disabled, low income people who lost everything. One gal even had money in her freezer," that went up in flames.

Nine of the residents are being housed at the Holiday Lodge motel on East Main Street. Arrangments are being made for a drop center for donations for the victims, but details will not not available until later in the day, Parr said.

Come back to The Union.com later in the day for more information.

Trinia Collins and fiance Nicholas Young got out with only the clothes on their backs. Mid-morning, they waited down the street and hoped they would be able to retrieve the most important of their possessions.

“We were sleeping and heard ‘boom, boom, boom' on the door, then heard someone saying ‘Get out, get out, get out,'” Collins said.

She escaped in her robe and Young ran out wrapped in a comforter.

“Thank God someone found me some clothes; they've all been wonderful,” she said, starting to sob. “All my money, my cell phone, my purse, they're all in the house. I'm worried about my kids' pictures.”

Young was frustrated after firefighters only let him grab Collins' purse, some medications and a few odds and ends.

“This is not good,” he said. “It's little stuff (that we've lost), but it all adds up ... We had just gone shopping.”

The cause of the blaze was under investigation, Clarabut said, adding he could not comment on reports a burning cigarette was the cause.

“We searched to make sure it was all clear,” Clarabut said. “But because the building was unstable on the back side, we had to pull out the firefighters for safety reasons.”

Complicating the firefighting effort was the loss of the ladder truck, which has been out of service for six weeks. A ladder truck was brought in from Placer County; responding crews included Nevada City, Nevada County Consolidated, Ophir Hill and Calfire fire agencies.

By 4:20 p.m., Grass Valley Fire Department had pulled all but two engines from the fire, sending five engines to North Auburn to battle the wildfire there.

“We're still trying to complete the mop-up,” Clarabut said of the downtown blaze. “It's so structurally unstable, I'm not able to put firefighters inside to remove debris ... We're struggling.”

To contact Staff Writer Liz Kellar, e-mail lkellar@theunion.com or call 477-4229.

Full containment of the 275-acre 49er Fire is expected by Tuesday.

"There's still containment lines to be built, but the forward progress of the fire has been stopped," Berlant said.

Berlant and others were assessing damage Monday morning for residents and checking on area residents.

While the remains of their homes glowed with flames, evacuees received dinner at two area elementary schools late Sunday. Others stayed with friends.

It was dubbed the 49er Fire for its location just east of Highway 49 — an uncomfortable reminder of the 49er Fire that tore through western Nevada County in the fall of 1988.

Investigators are still searching for a cause.

Structures reported to have burned include the former Harley-Davidson store on Locksley Lane and houses in the Parkway neighborhood just northeast of 84 Lumber, off Dry Creek Road. Neighborhoods in Christian Valley also were affected.

Firefighting departments that already had committed engines to fires in Yosemite and Southern California were stretched thinner with the North Auburn blaze Sunday.

Responding were 50 fire engines, eight air tankers, six helicopters, 10 hand crews, three bulldozers and 450 firefighters, Calfire spokesman Daniel Berlant said. Several arrived after first battling a fire in a large apartment building in downtown Grass Valley.

The grassland fire was reported at 2:22 p.m. at Rock Creek Road off Highway 49; by 2:41 p.m. the fire had jumped Locksley Lane and Shale Ridge Road and was heading toward Dry Creek Road. At 3:13 p.m., Bell Road was closed at Highway 49 and air tankers were called in.

At 4:15 p.m., the fire was estimated at 500 acres, and voluntary evacuations were under way north of Rock Creek Road.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for Saddleback Estates and another subdivision in Christian Valley.

At 5:30 p.m. officials were evacuating the Moss Rock Road area north of Auburn Municipal Airport, as the fire continued to burn to the northeast.

At 6:30 p.m., the forward progress of the fire had been halted, but firefighters still worked to put out fires at multiple structures, Calfire spokesman Darin Nelson said.

Contact Staff Writer Liz Kellar at lkellar@theunion.com or (530) 477-4229.

The Yuba Fire has grown to 3,582 acres, but quieter winds and additional equipment are expected to help firefighters go beyond the current 30 percent containment, Calfire reported Tuesday morning.

Firefighters will continue to build a line around the blaze and use backfires to control it, Calfire said.

Fire investigators have confirmed that a bird flying into a powerline started the initial blaze. The cause of the second fire on the site which broke out almost simultaneously is still under investigation.

The fire continues to threaten powerlines from the Colgate Hydroelectric power plant.

No additional structures have been destroyed beyond the two already burned, though hundreds remain threatened, Calfire reported. Eighteen people have been injured.

Full containment is now not expected until Saturday, said officials who originally predicted surrounding the fire by Friday. The cost of fighting the fire has risen to $6 million.

The blaze continued to move northeast and east in steep terrain towards Bullards Bar Reservoir Monday in an area without many homes, Yuba County emergency services spokesman Russ Brown said. The terrain has heavy fuels in spots.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 90s in the fire area today, with a southwest wind at 8 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento. The calmer winds should help the overall blaze battle, but continued overnight humidities are not helping the suppression effort.

Winds are expected to remain calm Wednesday and Thursday as well. The southwest winds expected today through Wednesday are predicted to shift Wednesday night and start coming out of the northeast, which could push more smoke back into western Nevada County.

The Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District said ozone and particulate levels will be increased today and Wednesday and perhaps through Friday.

Nevada County residents are urged to stay indoors if they can see or smell smoke.
Firefighters battled all night and have contained 35 percent of the Yuba Fire near Dobbins, according to Calfire spokeswoman Pat Burger.

The containment was aided by two massive water drops from the DC-10 SuperTanker out of Southern California. The passenger plane retrofitted for firefighting can drop 50 tons of water or retardant at a time, according to Calfire.

Two structures have been destroyed off of Lake Francis Road and the evacuation order for the Dobbins area remains in effect, Burger said. About 120 homes have been evacuated.

About 450 firefighters are on the scene of the fire continues to threaten the major power transmission lines from Colgate Powerhouse and there is a major outage in the Dobbins area, Calfire said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Only one person has been injured, suffering a sprained ankle, Burger said. She did not know if it was a firefighter or a civilian.

In addition, the evacuation center has been moved to the Loma Rica Community Church at 11234 Loma Rica Road in Loma Rica, just outside of Marysville, The phone number there is 530-743-5435.

The fire continues to burn to more than 1,000 acres, but dying afternoon winds allowed firefighters to build some fire lines around the flames by nightfall, Yuba County spokesman Russ Brown reported Friday night.

The fire includes two blazes that are threatening multiple structures near the Colgate Powerhouse and Lake Francis, just a few air miles west of North San Juan and just over the Nevada County line.

Both fires broke out just before 1 p.m., Calfire spokeswoman Jo-Ann Cartoscelli said.

People in about 20 homes along the road have been evacuated, and firefighters are working to save the other houses, Cartoscelli said.

About 450 firefighters are on the scene, assisted by more than 35 engines, four air tankers, four helicopters, three water tenders and two bull dozers.

Dobbins is on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Yuba River, just over the Nevada County line near Bullards Bar Reservoir.

Winds from the south-southwest are pushing the fire northward out of the river canyon, Cartoscelli said.

Southern Nevada County residents can see large plumes of smoke rising from the fire and can hear air tankers roaring out of Calfire's Grass Valley Emergency Command Center at the Nevada County Airport, repeatedly attacking the blaze.

Three special strike teams have been sent to the scene from the Tahoe National Forest, Nevada County and Yuba County, Cartoscelli said.

Evacuations ordered

Evacuations have been ordered on the following roads: Yuba-Nevada, entire length; Texas Hill, east of Dixon Hill Road; Cook Lane; Colton Way; Candlewood; De Long; Dixon Hill; Meadow Valley; Sky Meadow Way; Beacon Lane; Ranger Trail; Stewart Road; Rices Texas Hill Road; and Rices Crossing on the southern end. Officials also issued a voluntary evacuation order as a precaution for all residents who live on Regent Way or access their homes from that road. Regent Road runs southwest off Rices Crossing Road, according to Yuba County spokesman Russ Brown. The evacuation center formerly at the Dobbins-Oregon House Community Center has been moved to Loma Rica Community Church, 11234 Loma Rica Road, Loma Rica, to take refugees further from firefighting activity, Calfire reported. Smoke from those fires fouled the air in Nevada County Tuesday and could do so again today.

About 50 miles east of Redding, firefighters evacuated 10 homes and one business in the town of Burney.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman James Stewart said fire crews are cutting more fire lines today to protect houses there.

The blaze has consumed almost 27 square miles since it was sparked by an Aug. 2 lightning storm. It was 67 percent contained Tuesday afternoon

Officials say 15 firefighters were injured.

About 111 square miles of the Los Padres National Forest, mostly inaccessible backcountry, were closed, Forest Service spokesman Maeton Freel said.

Ranchers moved their horses and other livestock as the flames crested a ridge a few miles away, Freel said.

The 3-day-old wildfire in the San Rafael Wilderness area of the forest scorched almost 33 square miles of brushy canyon lands that haven't burned since 1922.

Freel said 1,277 firefighters and water-scooping aircraft battled the blaze, which is 10 percent contained. One firefighter suffered a hernia.
