This year, Pedigree developed a series of ads that contrasted the healthy, happy dogs of the show with images of dogs that remained neglected and ignored, trying to raise awareness about homeless animals or those living in abusive situations. The WKC Dog Show wanted to focus more on the beautiful side of dogs, rather than some of the harsher realities they face.

The WKC Dog Show certainly has the right to choose who sponsors the program and their advertising campaign—but is it right to always focus only on the bright side of the doggy life? If people don’t know what some dogs are experiencing, will they be as motivated to adopt and provide loving homes?

What’s your take? Is the WKC Dog Show wrong to disassociate itself with dog adoption efforts? Do adoptions ads focus too much on the negative, or are they at least admitting the painful truth about the ongoing plight of dogs in our country?

Now, if any creature was ever made for cuddling, it’s dogs, wouldn’t you agree? And, after all, your pups bring a lot of love into your life, don’t they? So why not include them in Valentine’s Day 2012. Traditional gifts may not be the best things (most fine dining restaurants don’t allow dogs to sit next to you, for instance) but there are still plenty of ways you can get the message across.

How can you show your pups some love on this year’s Valentine’s Day?

• Get your pup looking good! – Pamper your pup with a grooming session, and then surprise them afterwards with a colorful new collar. Then trot them around the park so they can show off just how adorable they are.
• Edible cards – Would you believe someone has created Valentine’s Day cards your dog can munch? Send a sweet message…and then let them devour it!
• Treats – Hand a few extra treats to your wonderful dog, maybe a new chew bone, and they’ll know you love them ever so much! You could even bust out a pack of Mixables to make their dinner extra special and delicious.
• Quality time – Pups love spending time with their humans, snuggling up at the end of the day to just relax and enjoy being near each other. Find a cozy spot around the house you can both enjoy and settle in to read, watch a movie, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Just so long as petting is involved.

The Annual Puppy Bowl!

Never heard of it? It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Let me dish out the details.

It started back in 2005 when the Animal Planet aired the first Puppy Bowl alongside the Super Bowl. The show consists of a pack of pups at play inside a miniature version of a football stadium. A highly trained referee keeps the play safe, while a commentator keeps the audience entertained by the cute antics. There’s even a half-time show

But that’s not all! See, these puppies are all brought in from various shelters are are up for adoption. When you watch the show, you can learn how to bring one into your own home, and even support the local shelters they’ve come from. What could be more worthwhile?

Check out this video of the final moments from last year’s game, and then make sure you’ve got plenty of treats ready for your pups who’ll be anticipating the game of the year!

Suddenly, the ball popped out of the baby’s hands and rolled away! The parents didn’t notice, so I dashed after the ball, eager to retrieve the child’s toy. I found it under some nearby chairs and trotted it back to plop it in the baby carrier. The adult humans were so tired, they didn’t even notice as the baby picked the ball back up, gurgled happily…and then threw it away again!

This happened five more times, and I dashed to all corners of the security area, darting around luggage piles and wriggling under benches where people slept while waiting for delayed flights.

At last, I got smart. Instead of giving the ball back to the child, I took it to the parents and dropped it in the woman’s lap. By this time, it was quite covered in slobber. As fun as it was to play fetch, I had to save my energy in case a real emergency broke out in the airport.

The humans were surprised, but glad to see their child’s toy returned. They gave Simon pettings, and then I had to return to my handler to resume smelling luggage and shoes.

Hopefully they washed the ball off before returning it to their baby.

How can pups stay warm and cozy while still enjoying plunges into snowdrifts and rides down the nearest sledding hill? Take a look at these following helpful tips:

• Keep an eye on those paws! – Puppy paws may be made of tough stuff, but they can get worn down or frozen. The salt sometimes used to melt ice on roads and sidewalks can cause cracks and irritation, especially if it gets wedged between the pads. Make sure to take the time to check out their paws from time to time.
• Don’t leave them outside unattended – Even if your pup loves to dash about in the snow, they shouldn’t be left alone. Their fur helps some, but it’s hardly a foolproof solution against freezing temperatures.
• Keep that fur long and luxurious – Don’t shave your dog during winters months. This will remove a lot of the natural warmth they rely on. At the same time, make sure they receive regular grooming, as clumping hair can disrupt the insulation effect.
• Consider some winter accessories -  Does your dog not like walking on ice? Dog booties might be a good option! For those dogs that love being outdoors, heated dog beds or shelters can help them stay out in winter weather longer. And for smaller dogs or those with shorter hair, puppy sweaters and jackets can keep away the shivers.

When you take the time and effort to prep your pup for winter, it’s so much more enjoyable for for the both of you.

Far from it! There are, in fact, countless activities pups and humans can enjoy together in a winter wonderland. Here are some easy options:

• Sledding – Find a good hill, and make sure you have a sled big enough to hold both you and your dog. Then enjoy the ride all the way down!
• Skijoring – Weird word, isn’t it? This little-known sports combines dog-sledding with cross-country skiing. A special harness attaches you to your pup, who then helps pull you through the snow on your skis. (Some crazy humans even do this with horses!)
• Snowshoeing – Strap on a pair of snowshoes, find a nearby trail that isn’t too icy, and tromp away with your pup romping in the snow beside you. Hiking isn’t just a spring/summer activity, but it can be enjoyed all year long, so long as you have the right gear.

Well, the New Year is upon us, which means the usual tradition of coming up with resolutions for living better in 2012. Everyone seems to have a long list, but the question always is how long they’ll stick to it. You humans might be surprised how similar a pup’s resolutions can be to yours. Let’s take a look at a few doggy resolutions and how they translate:

• I will not bark at everyone who walks by on the sidewalk!

Translation: I will try to make more friends.

• I will play fetch for at least an hour a day!

Translation: I will get in better shape.

• I will bask in warm sunlight and appreciate every treat my human gives me.

Translation: I will take more joy in the simple things of life.

• I will cuddle with my human more

Translation: I will spend more time with those I love.
