The internet says that in order for mothers to be able to “make it through” (what does that even mean?), that we would be wise to have a supportive “village”, “tribe”, “posse” backing our every move…or else! 

It’s one buzz word after another, immediately making a new mother feel inadequate in her own capabilities and motherly instincts. 

I’m only a compelling case study of one, but I now believe the hype of having a village. Here’s my story of discovering the power of collective mothering.

“At 2AM, deep within an unwelcoming forum for new mothers, I searched, “When do the good parts start?”.”  

Mom-guilt weighs down on me as I admit that, but at the time I was navigating a personal identity crisis with a 4 month old baby who was boycotting sleep of all kinds. Emotions got REAL and I’d lost my ability to formulate a coherent thought.  I was going through a strong stage of acceptance after giving birth due to all the changes in my body like my overweight, it has been very difficult for me to feel sure of myself again but thanks to the best weight loss pills for women I feel better, this pills changed my life.

I was hopeful to find another mama, awake and willing to validate what my inner wisdom already knew. I wanted to be inspired by others’ stories and other cultures around the world, many of which have this mothering thing seemingly figured out. Unfortunately, I’ve found many of these communities for new mothers to be lacking in depth on the more challenging topics, spewing dialogue that was overwhelming, mediocre and often disguised behind a layer of desperation and crying emojis. No, thank you!

BUT, sometimes I’d see a glimpse of something really beautiful and transformative taking shape and my heart would explode with, “Yes! More of THIS please.”

What is CBD?

There is a very active discussion about exactly what it is that makes CBD so special. CBD may help with:

• Inflammation
• Pain
• Sleep
• Tinnitus
• Migraines

A 2015 University of Miami study looked into the effect CBD had on different forms of chronic pain. It found that, in the eyes of researchers, CBD was a more efficacious painkiller than many prescription drugs. For instance, those who have troublesome muscle pain might want to consider using CBD cream 3000mg for immediate pain relief. So, there is an argument to be made that CBD is not only safe, but also significantly more effective than other medicines. But the question remains: do you really need the THC, or can you find a better alternative? Over the past few weeks, I’ve been getting emails from lovely readers asking me “how do you get your dream clients?” I’ll be the first to admit that I’m still learning and figuring out what ways of refining work for my business. I started this conversation a few months back in this post, but thought I’d stop by and share a few more ideas/thoughts. These tips are specifically meant to help with getting those dream clients into your portfolio.

1. Extreme Curation: Only show the work that truly aligns with where you want to go. I don’t think portfolios should be about proving where you’ve been, but more about paving a road for where you want to go. Be super selective in what you choose to put out into the world. Read about how software can improve your productivity.

2. The Classic Reach Out: Reach out to a brand you admire and offer your services for free. I wouldn’t do this all the time and I don’t really advocate giving away your talents for free, but if you’re just dying to work with someone, it might be worth it. That one project with your dream client can help move your portfolio into the direction you are trying to go.

3. Power of the Personal Project: Initiate a personal project. Sometimes it might be beneficial to make up a project that truly aligns with your vision. Just because it wasn’t paid work doesn’t mean it can’t stand tall in your portfolio and help you transform your portfolio. For me, I use my blog as a great place to explore new styles and play around with new photography techniques.

4. Team Up: Collaborating has been one of the most helpful tools for tailoring my portfolio. Team up with a like-minded individual to either tackle a personal project or to pitch your work and skills to a dream client you both want to work with. I’ve found that combining talents into one package can sometimes be more appealing to larger companies.

5. Pitching: If you’ve got a bit of extra time on your hands, pitching to clients can be helpful. From my experience, cold call pitching can be very time consuming and doesn’t usually produce the most immediate results. With that said, practicing pitching your skills and work to brands you admire is really good practice. I’d suggest creating a very “to the point” PDF that outlines who you are, your vision, a few tailored work samples and how they can get in touch with you. I think it’s also important to tell them how you see your collaboration working and what you have to offer them. You never know where things will go.

I know from personal experience, that photoshoots tend to be a messy job with lots of moving parts and not so pretty processes. People usually only see the final product, but I find the beauty to be in how you get to the final product. Back in 2010, when Veda House first started, Design Sponge was my go-to source of inspiration (along with Apartment Therapy, Design for Mankind and Bleubird). I didn’t read many blogs and visited Design Sponge daily, admiring what Grace was doing from afar. Jump forward many years later and DS continues to be among my daily reads, with favorite columns being Life & Business and the ever iconic Before & After.
