We met Susie back in March of this year and she brought a sample of her vintage dishes she has available for rent. Susie has a love for thrift shopping and I guess you have to love it to open up a business around it! Dirty Dishes was launched late last year and I love that Susie has a philosophy that “children need to be allowed to use nice things in order to learn an appreciation for them”. We plan on using her for the right children’s party with our sister company Little Posh Parties one of these days.

On Monday, I wrote about the launch of Etsy Weddings. I’m also excited to share that Dirty Dishes has launched their Etsy Registry this week! Susie has created two collections in her Dirty Dishes Boutique.  The first collection is “Autumn Claret” and features amber glassware and ruby red plates combined with mismatched floral pieces.  The second is the “Sweetest” collection which is a softer, more feminine grouping of pretty florals. Both collections will have four place settings – listed separately as they are not all identical – with the opportunity to purchase more, if desired.  Susie will instruct buyers to contact her and she will collect and assemble more for them, with a reserved listing.

Also listed are serving bowls, glassware, linen, etc identified to coordinate with the place settings.  The idea is that a bride can register for all of the pieces that build a complete tablescape, with the freedom to be selective as well.   The great thing is that they can pull their registry from all of the shops on Etsy, so they might also find other coordinating items from another shop.

What did you do prior to opening up your vintage dishes business? I left my career as an interior designer, just over a year ago. I was lucky to have cut my teeth as a design assistant on the opening of the Bellagio. From there I continued in hospitality design for 15 years before deciding to pursue my love of dishes.

What are some of your hobbies?  I once listed thrift shopping as a hobby. But now I love realizing that I’m actually working when I’m out hunting.  I love to organize things- items, information, what ever I can get in my hands. So, scanning and archiving family photos is one of my favorite things to do. It also feeds my love for nostalgia.

Describe a typical business day? My mornings start with the business of taking care of my hubby, since he has to go out in the rat race every day.  After making coffee, breakfast, and packing his lunch, I make my tea and from that point, my days are nicely varied. I could be out gathering treasure, which combines nicely with my household errands. I could be at the computer blogging or book keeping with one or both of my cats near by.  I could be photographing and counting my inventory. I could be out at meetings with wedding professionals or clients. Or if inspiration hits, I could be playing with different ways to combine my dishes in a brand new tablescape. I’m a lucky girl.

What is the best piece of advice you can offer a couple on their wedding day?  Common advice is to “relax and don’t sweat the small stuff”. I cannot in good conscience offer this advice because this is in sharp contrast to how I operate! I am new to the wedding industry. But I read this in a book before my wedding day, and I have often passed it along to friends…

No matter how well you plan and how good your team of professionals are, something will fall short of your expectations. So before the day begins, accept that 3 or maybe 5 things will go wrong and resolve to count them off as they happen. This helps bring perspective to the day by prompting you to stop and consider if this less than perfect thing qualifies to make the list. You’ll likely find that most things are not important enough to even count. And if it is a big deal, you can easily move past it because you already accepted it at the beginning of your day.

Anything else interesting you’d like to share? I in no way claim to be an expert in dinnerware. I believe we should use pretty things and that only we ourselves assign value to any given piece. I pick up a piece because of its aesthetics or sense of history, not necessarily because it is a collectible.  I believe our homes and the way we entertain should reflect our own individual story.

It was a beautiful wedding on a beautiful day. The weather could not have been more perfect. When Angelica and I arrived to the historic La Venta Inn, we were just blown away by the view of both the ocean and the city. And even though Angelica and I both grew up in California (Angelica in Southern California and myself in San Francisco), we don’t see that here in Las Vegas.

Shanna loves the vintage style and this wedding was a true reflection of that. Gary, on the other hand, is more into the modern style so they wanted to blend a little modern with the vintage style. Shanna and Gary were both part of Greek life at UNLV so many of their invited guests were also from their fraternities and sororities. Their grand entrance song was the UNLV Fight Song so as a fellow UNLV Rebel, that was a fun and proud moment for me too.

A few weeks ago, my team and I sat down with Kevin from LED Unplugged to discuss his lights and rentals. LED Unplugged offers the most technologically advanced wireless LED lighting on the market today. Kevin donated some lighting to one of our Thursday Therapy events and it was amazing how quickly he was able to set everything up. Because these lights are wireless, it probably took about 30 minutes for Kevin to set everything up! If you’re getting married soon or will be hosting a special event, I think a consultation with Kevin to see how these lights work in person is a must!

In additional to the lights, LED Unplugged also offers white leather furniture for rent, custom gobos, lighted high top tables and cake tables. Kevin is constantly adding to his inventory.

Some fun facts: LaVey’s a vegetarian (actually, a pescetarian) but we had a slider truck at their wedding. Luckily, there was one veggie slider option and a mac ‘n cheese station.  Can’t let our bride go hungry! She is also allergic to flowers so we kept flowers to a minimum. We had schwartz calla lilies in her bouquet but the rest of the decor provided by Enchanted Florist was non floral decor. And of course, the fab makeup artist and owner of Your Beauty Call not only did her own makeup but did make up for the entire bridal party. She said it calmed her.

I asked LaVey to share their story in her words:
I always thought since I was about 16 that I wanted to get married in a movie theater. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been fascinated by movies and cinema, especially the golden era of cinema where people dressed to the nines to go watch a movie. So, of course I hunted down the only standing old movie theater with any character in it left in Nevada located right outside of Las Vegas in charming Boulder City. I loved that theater and the owner was so nice and accommodating to me.

However, in the mean time, Tyson had started flight school in Henderson at Monarch Sky and the owner and staff had decided to throw a Superbowl party in their brand new recently renovated airplane hangar-turned-lounge re opening. I tagged along with Tyson to the party and from the outside it looked like your average airplane hangar but once you walked through the door, I was amazed by how cool this venue was. The ceilings were beyond high (of course they were, they usually store aerobatic airplanes in there), there was an old fashioned dark cherry wood bar and the whole place screamed retro! And not at all in a cheesy way! It was just a lounge for pilots to hangout in. I knew right then that this place is where we had to get married. My internal thought must have been blurted out loud because the on staff photographer looked at me and said, “you so should get married here. It would be our first wedding.” I glanced at Tyson and we both gleamed and we once again just “knew”. And I guess like they say, “the rest is history”. It’s true what they say, “when you know, you know”.  And, that goes for not just the groom but the dress, the venue and really all the vendors you pick for your big day. That’s exactly how I felt with ALL my wedding vendors. It was like we were all meant to be! A true perfect fit! And as cliche as it sounds, you’ll know when it happens to you!

I love the below photo because it showcases her Elvis Presley tattoo. LaVey and I are both Elvis fans – she has a tattoo of him on her arm and I share his birthday. Also, check out the cool airplane bridal bouquet brooch! Love it.

How hot does this group look?

LaVey and Tyson wanted minimal decor at the ceremony site. We set up their chairs “in the round” and decided on black fabric and a red chandelier on the structure and black crystal chandeliers at the start of the aisle.

After the ring bearer and flowergirl walked down the aisle, the music stopped and anticipation was building for LaVey’s entrance. Having a background in entertainment, I am ALL about the drama and the timing of events. I love that the music stopped and it was so silent as we awaited the plane’s entrance to the ceremony site. I got chills when we heard the plane come around.

Tyson’s last name is “Kindred” so isn’t that signature cocktail name perfect?

Describe your perfect day off.
My perfect day off would consist of sleeping in until at least 10 am, eating my favorite foods all day long (waffles + fresh fruit for breakfast, a gourmet salad + a sandwich for lunch, Red Velvet Café chocolate chip cookies for an afternoon treat, mini sliders or grilled chicken and vegetables from one of my favorite restaurants for dinner, oh and a Pizookie for dessert because 2 treats in one day is obviously not enough), shopping at some of my favorite stores, going on a picnic with my family, spending ample time at my favorite spa and getting a 2 hour deep tissue massage, reading magazines/blogs/pinning away on Pinterest, going to a concert with my husband (U2, Beastie Boys, or Coldplay please), and then ending the day by staying in a luxury suite with a beautiful view of The Las Vegas Strip.  All that’s doable in a day, right?!

Favorite places to shop:
I definitely have my favorite spots!  Home Goods and Z Gallerie for home décor / Nordstrom, Forever 21, H&M, and GAP for fashion / Trader Joes for food / and Anthropologie and Target for everything in between!

Heels or flats:
Fabulous flats 6 days out of 7

Favorite candy bar:
I don’t really like candy, but I am totally into homemade chocolate chips cookies and ice cream…or enjoying the two of them together for an ultimate treat!

Favorite cuisine:
Thai might be my new fave but Italian is always a classic favorite of mine.

Comedy or drama:
Comedy

Email, phone, or text:
Email for sure

Stay in/or go out?
I prefer to stay in, but I do need date nights with my husband and a girls night out every now and again!

What’s a fun fact about you that you’d like to share with our readers?
I am still able to recall useless bits of information from many years ago like what I wore on the first day of school K through college, what my friends’ phone numbers were in high school, lyrics to songs I haven’t heard in years…you know, super important things like that!

How I got my start:
Right after I earned my college degree in Communications/Advertising, I realized I didn’t want a job in the field I had been studying for the past 4 years prior – sorry Mom and Dad!  I had always been drawn to creative endeavors in life and just knew that I didn’t want to spend my future working at an ad agency coming up with panty hose ad campaigns.  So shortly after graduation I got a job as an assistant to a graphic designer.  I made trips to the paper store, post office and tied all the ribbons on each order that went out.  Super exciting, right?! Obviously that still left me hungry for more, but going back to school to learn graphic design was not really an option for me at the time.  So I got my first design program, Illustrator 8 (now I’m really dating myself), and have literally taught myself all that I know.  What started out as teaching myself how to draw a basic circle has blossomed into a full fledged career as a graphic designer and small business owner for the past nine years.  I officially started my business on my 25th birthday and haven’t looked back since.  I love being able to help others celebrate life’s occasions big and small through unique, one of a kind printed pieces and at SHE PAPERIE + design boutique, we do exactly that.
