A Few Things You Should Know About Your Bra

Vera Wang shared some great bra basics tidbits today in her e-newsletter. I think this is great information for brides and bridesmaids to know. You are only as good as your foundation!

Strapless bra: May not be practical for full-chested brides so discuss with your dress consultant before choosing the type of gown. Also, check to ensure that the neckline of the dress conceals the bra.

Long-line bra: Can cut into the body, especially on heavier brides. Always check the length to make sure it’s comfortable.

Conventional bra with straps: This requires a dress with straps. Period.

Boned bodice: If a gown already has a built-in boned bodice, wearing another bra may add too much thickness to the torso.

Don't forget to bring an extra bra on wedding day in case of emergency!

Designing Your Own Floral

Some uber-creative and hands-on brides choose to design their own floral arrangements for their weddings. While I cannot claim floral expertise and a knack for arranging, I think this choice adds another layer of personalization for your nuptials. What an extra special touch!

If you decide to try your hand in arranging your own flowers, you may want to keep a few design principles in mind:

Odd numbers are more interesting to the eye than even numbers of objects. Using odd numbers, flowers can be arranged both symmetrically and asymmetrically. Many floral designers start with the number "3" and arrange around it. It has been said that odd numbers are more "pleasing to look at and is restful on the eye."

Surely you will already have a color palette chosen for your wedding, but when choosing colors for your wedding flowers, choose between 3-7 colors. Any more than seven and the collection will start to look messy. Again--following the odd number principle, it is also best to use an odd number of colors. You can choose to use complimentary, monochromatic colors (colors of the same hue) or contrasting colors. If you choose to go with one color, vary the texture and form of the flowers and/or plants.

An eco-conscious way to incorporate floral into your wedding is the consider using plants and foliage. Flowers are very pretty, but they die after a few days. Plants are sustainable, can be taken home and cared for by the guests and will provide a lasting memory of your special day. Consider the leaf color when selecting the plants for your wedding. Sweet potato vine-purple and chartreuse, coral bells, elephant ears and other plants all have unique leaves and virtually no flowers.

Do you know how something is just you? No matter how many past seasons this dress is, it will never be out of style for me. It's simply beautiful.

I am borrowing this list from Glamour magazine. As I was reading old vs. new, in my older {gasp!}, more mature mind, I can seriously understand how I used to subscribe to the old list. But these days, it's all about the new list. Real love, the kind that warms your heart on the inside permanently, is really about feeling good about your mate--not if you can check off all the right crendentials.

Did it really take me 30-something years to get here? Read on and tell me what you think:

Old Love List

He's got to be Tracy-Morgan-meets-Larry-David funny.
Dark hair, blue eyes (cute babies!) <-----in my case it would be green eyes. . .
He has to keep his (chiseled, hairless) body in top shape.

If I Had To Do It All Again, I Would...

If I had to do it all over again, I would have hired a wedding consultant to be there on my wedding day. Several things went wrong that day and if I had someone else that was extremely knowledgeable about weddings there, I wouldn't have had to deal with certain problems.
For example, the photographer's assistant did not notice that the hem of my dress was flipped up so it is forever flipped up in ALL of my pictures and memories. An experienced wedding consultant would have been participating in the photos and would have noticed and fixed this detail before any photos were shot.

In addition, the bus driver did not have the directions from the church to the reception that I faxed to the limo company. I had to let a guest point the way. If I had a consultant, she would have had copies of the directions for the driver.

After the photos, the entire wedding party was waiting outside of the church for the bus to return but it never did. So they all had to scramble into cars and hurry down to the reception. If I had a consultant, she would have made sure that the bus came back. . .

You can read the rest of the article on their website, but the article drives home a very good point: Bad things do happen to good people. And, unfortunately, many people don't have the chance to re-do their wedding day. Protect your investment: Hire a wedding planner!

I wish that I could attend a wedding reception that was ALL white in design and decor. Oodles and oodles of candles and soft lighting. And one of these sculptures on the ceiling or the wall. That would be beyond swoon-worthy.

Armed with any one of these David Wiseman installations at your reception, no brain cells would be needed to figure out table centerpieces, napkin treatments or designer silverware. . .for all eyes would be looking upward.

The branch chandelier is just pure genius. I may just offer up my beloved niece, Anija, just to get my hands on one of those. And everyone knows how much I love my little miniKatasha! As a bride, you could have some of these strategically placed at the entrance into your reception and then take them home: a lasting memento of your fabulous day and great design for your new home together!

Add to that the unadulterated joy in the fact that no one you know has EVER had their reception styled like this??

How luxe are these invitations??

I don't think you can get any more opulent than these. I am in love with the rich, navy color combined with the texture of the raw silk. I think I would squeal out loud if I received a wedding invitation like this in the mail. Actually--these should probably be hand-delivered.

I personally think this is awesome. Hobby Lobby is NOT close to my home and many times I can't get there to take advantage of their fantastic deals. True enough, sometimes you just have to walk around and browse a store to score some awesome finds, but you cannot deny the convenience of the web.

Bourbon Bars

Looking to do something a little edgier at your wedding but still want a signature drink? You don't have to have the cutesy pink and purple-colored drinks with equally-cutesy-to-match names. Try a Bourbon Bar at your reception!

You are free to do away with the appletinis, cosmopolitans and vodka spritzers and kick your reception into overdrive with an assortment of bourbon-based drinks.

I discussed this topic way back in 2008 and I acknowledge that whiskey bars are not for the faint at heart! I am not the whiskey connoisseur. . .what exactly is bourbon? What interesting things can you do with it??

Bourbon is a whiskey known throughout the world to be an American liquor. Today, regulations require that bourbon be distilled from a sour mash containing 51 percent corn and be aged in charred oak barrels for at least two years. This lends the distinct smokiness and flavor that bourbon whiskey is well known for. Bourbon takes its name from a well-known county in Kentucky, but the region that we associate with bourbon whiskey was originally a part of Virginia and today consists of over 30 counties, each of which can legally produce this spirit. Popular bourbon brands include Jack Daniels Black Label, Crown Royal, Maker’s Mark and Walker’s Deluxe.

As it turns out, there are lots of drinks to be made with bourbon as the base ingredient. You can introduce The 42nd Street, Billy the Kid, Lynchburg Lemonade, Four Fathoms, The Godfather, Mint Julep, Nikki Sixx and Crown Royal on Ice. Or you can create your own siggy and give it a cool name.

If money is no object, then keep your bourbon bar open the entire night with an additional hosted full bar. To remain cutting edge and cut costs, have the bourbon bar open during cocktail hour only, during the after party or only with an additional soft bar (beer and wine). Additionally, the warm flavors of bourbon are perfect for a winter wedding.

If you live in Indiana, snow flurries, perhaps??

When choosing attire for a Spring wedding, keep in mind that the spring weather can be really iffy. You may have 70 degrees and sunshine, or you may end up with a damp, chilly day. When picking for your girls, choose dresses with sleeves on them, pick a dress they can wear with pashmina wraps or go vintage with cardigan sweaters.<--------Ding! Ding! Ding! I like that idea!

Push past the urge to pick "traditional" Spring wedding colors like pastels. Make things easier on your bridesmaids by allowing them to choose the color or cut of their dress. Or go in a different direction with purple or turquoise or lime green dresses, accompanied by hot pink bouquets. For a daytime wedding, try dressing the guys in khaki suits and coordinating ties.

The Hard Questions Reprise

I originally wrote this post in September 2008 and recently came across this book as I was purging/cleaning my bedroom. As I started to leaf through the book again, I was reminded of what a great resource this book is to couples. Please enjoy the post and if you've read the book, please comment on your thoughts on the book.

I love love. I love the giddy, floating-on-air feelings that love brings. And everyone knows that I love to throw the ultimate love party--a stunning and impressive wedding. But is love enough for the day after your ultimate love party? Will just your love carry you and your hunny through the for richer, for poorer? All the way through the happily ever after?

What prompted me to talk about love today was the Daily Q&A that was sent out by Carrie and Danielle earlier in the week~what do you know about love? The following were the answers by Carrie and Danielle respectively:

Without love life is meaningless. It is our oxygen.

Love is a verb. That’s THE most useful thing my mother ever told me. Love walks the talk…and the dog. At midnight, when it’s my turn to walk the pooch, I think, “What would love do?” Walk…the…dog.

I can definitely agree with both of those answers and I feel that, innately, those answers are true. But I also know that it takes a little more than love to sustain a successful and productive marriage. Recently a friend of mine gave me a book entitled The Hard Questions. I was simultaneously thrilled and puzzled. Thrilled because I could recommend the book to newly-engageds. Puzzled, because, well--am I getting married soon? Maybe she thinks my biological clock is ticking even though I can't hear it. . .

. . .at any rate, The Hard Questions is a book that has 100 "essential" questions that you should ask your intended before you say I do. I certainly do not advocate replacing formal pre-marital counseling, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. This book leads you to intimate discussions with your mate that may not come up in the course of regular communication and conversation. Not all 100 questions may apply to your situation so just skip over those. You are sure to uncover some gems that will have you thinking, 'Wow. I never thought about that."

Love is the solid foundation of the best relationships and even the fat, juicy cherry on top. But it is trust, faith, intimacy, safety, like-mindedness, teamwork and compromise that keeps it all together. The ultimate love party only lasts a day (or three!), but marriage is a lifetime.

Frame Your Family and Friends

Many couples have pictures of themselves all over their ceremony and reception. Them when they first met. Them when they were 5 years old. Them when he proposed. You get the idea. . . While I think it's a great idea to personalize your wedding, why don't you take it a step further and have tons of pictures of your invitees at the wedding?? It will make them feel so honored and included.

Imagine walking down an entry hall leading to a reception space and encountering a huge, beautifully-colored, baroque mirror plastered with pictures of everyone who is going to be at the wedding. This is an innovative use of a gorgeous, large scale frame. The two shown are available from the Italian company Vismara, but you can find similar ones from furniture stores or prop houses. I especially like the idea of placing the pictures right on the mirror. Or you could use a canvas backdrop or even cork board.

All black and white or sepia-toned pictures would totally stand out in a brightly-hued picture frame. Go for colored images if your frame is gold or black. And you must be sure to allow enough time to collect all the pictures of your invited guests. Imagine how you would feel to find out if you were left off! If your guest list is ginormous {so 1985, btw}, try this idea on a smaller scale at your bridal shower.

A Return to Soft and Pretty

After a season of bold and dramatic colors for fall and winter (purples, hot pinks, turquoises), I am predicting a very soft and pretty color palette for make-up in the spring. Think muted and ethereal colors: glowing bronzes, sheer and dewy pinks, muted browns and coppers--just a complete return to a fresh face.

While I would never be without my dark, eyeliner and mascara(!), I would certainly support this look for a springtime or summertime wedding. If you are DIYing your make-up, Stila Cosmetics has some great products that will help you achieve this look.
