2009 Christmas Program
“Christmas Hang Ups”

It's just before Christmas and the tree ornaments have been wakened. As they begin to prepare for another season on the Watson's Christmas tree, they are greeted by an “un-Christmassy” ornament. They don't understand what she has to do with Christmas and give her a rather cool reception. But when a significant figure from the mantelpiece explains to all of them what Christmas is about, they learn how they each have significance in God's amazing plan of redemption through Jesus.

YOU Can Be a Life Group Leader

PURPOSE
Build better care-giving into the Church ~ Build better relationships ~ Build leadership in individuals ~ Build the church in New Testament fashion.

PHILOSOPHY

A Life group is a small, supportive community of individuals who meet regularly to both discover and express Christian love, friendship and be nurtured by the Word of God. The nurturing process seeks to enhance pastoral care for individuals, develop their leadership abilities and act as an outreach system.

4 BASIC KINDS OF LIFE GROUPS

1. Nurture / Care groups – One in which the needs of spiritual and emotional growth are addressed. A large portion of the time is given over to Bible Discovery, with special time set aside for listening and caring for individuals. Each group can determine how much time is going to be spent on Bible discovery, sharing & prayer. The Bible Discovery can vary from intense to casual discovery.

2. Support / Healing groups – One in which all the individuals have the same focused need. These groups major on love and listening. God’s Word is shared as the foundation to give encouragement and understanding in dealing with this need. Examples: Single Parents, Divorce care or Alcohol recovery.

3. Ministry Groups – "Real Life Ministry Teams," have the focus is on doing. It is a group of individuals bound together to actively involve themselves in some focused ministry. An example would be the Worship Team.

4. Activity/ Fellowship Groups - These groups are involved in similar activities such as hiking, table games and photography; and incorporate a time of devotion and prayer along with the activity.

In all groups our objective is to express God’s love for one another. In all, we are journeying together as we learn about God, others and ourselves.

YOU can be a Life Group Leader… all you have to do is be yourself…be available for God to use you…include others into your world and share the love of Jesus with them.

Thank you for bringing candy! We have had about 3,000 pieces of candy but we need around 10,000 so continue bringing the candy in.

Also, volunteers will be needed to make this night a success. Sign up to help! A sheet will be coming around during the weekend services or find the sheet after the service in the back of the sanctuary.

We are very excited to serve our community by putting on Light the Night. Just a little encouragement, the Chamber of Commerce is very excited about us running this event. They have voiced their appreciation and are trilled to see people willing to serve our wonderful community. Lets keep being a blessing to Sitka!

Pound for Pound Challenge
5 weeks of building healthy habits both physically & spiritually and giving to help those in our community.

The Pound for Pound Challenge will be starting this Sunday, October 18th for 5 weeks. For every pound of weight lost, a pound of food will be donated to feed those in need in our community. It is estimated that 1 in 8 Americans will go hunger tonight, many of them children. Let’s honor the bodies God gave us and honor the community He has placed us in!

SPEACIAL SPEAKER

Judi Ballweber, Eurasia Northwest/Russia

"I worked as an RN in Anchorage for several years, then moved to Nome to work as an RN in a bush hospital. My one year assignment in Nome turned into almost five years in Nome.

In June 1997, God very clearly spoke to my heart about long-term missions in Russia. In August 1997, I went to Vladivostok, Russia for a two week camp with Alaska Youth Ministries. God burned a vision and burden so strongly in my heart that I could not ignore it. By 1999, I had sold my home, left my practice, and enrolled at AGTS for further education and preparation.

I am now helping the national churches, rehab centers, and university students in Northwest Eurasia and Russia learn about and respond to the HIV/AIDS crisis that is growing extremely rapidly. I share about the compassion of Christ who showed his grace to so many. I teach about health issues for rehab centers since the majority of students are HIV and Hepatitis positive, and many also have tuberculosis. God is taking my life and work experience to help make a difference for eternity in Eurasia Northwest and Russia. God has given me great joy and fulfillment as I hear his heart and obey."

Mark is passionate to see individuals deepen their intimacy with God and capture an eternal perspective. With 16 years of effective youth ministry experience in some of the greatest churches in this nation.In 2009 Mark & Heidi relocated to Anchorage, Alaska with their four daughters to become the District Youth Director for the Alaska District Council of the Assemblies of God.

There will be gatherings at Blatchley, Sitka High, Pacific High and Edgecumbe. See you there on Wednesday!

SATURDAY NIGHT WORSHIP STARTING THIS SATURDAY!

Starting this Sunday - Pastor Lori is offering worship geared toward kids Sunday mornings. If you would like your child to be involved, it will begin at 10:00am.

Baptismal service directly following Sunday morning worship.

The youth group will be having a lock in at the church July 17th. It will begin at 6pm and finish Saturday morning at 9am. They will be enjoying the WHOLE night with video games (Rock Band & Guitar Hero), snacking and hanging out, and 3am worship. Bring snacks to share! Dinner is not provided so eat before you come :)

Book Sale! Sitka Tango was written by Tracie and Brady Harang and can be purchased in the back of the church after the service. All the proceeds are going to our church missionary project in Ft. Yukon, Alaska. Here’s a little about the book:

Join Sitka Tango and Brady as they take you on an adventure to the Causeway! Built by WWII soldiers in the 1940’s, the Causeway is full of interesting caves and trails. First, Tango and Brady kayak the sea, then they hike and explore these 60 year old caves and trails. Along the way, they experience challenges and moments of uncertainty. They work together and discover the Causeway of Sitka, Alaska!
