Arlington Plant Gets Upgrade, Goes Greener!

Amid all the news about the Republican Primary and Obama’s state of the Union address, it’s always nice to get a bit of local news that says “things are looking up.”

Here’s the “long-and-short.”

Arlington’s Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) very recently completed an overhaul on its upgrades, and it’s now not only set to help maintain a “greener” Chesapeake Bay, but also to function as a new source of revenue for the County.

This comes as a result of the WPCP’s filtration and removal of nitrogen and phosphorus of the Bay, which is currently starkly below the state of VA’s permit limits, garnering Arlington “tradable credits” that can be exchanged through VA’s Nutrient Credit Exchange Program, making it possible for the Plant to give back from what it “cuts out” of the environment, as well as potentially reuse the removed elements, such as recycling phosphorus for fertilizer, and so on.

Wine Night at the Movies Is An Incredible Combination!

History has demonstrated that combinations of two things often turn out to be even more popular as a union then they ever were by themselves. Some examples of this are found with peanut-butter & jelly, green eggs & ham, and fire & firewood.

And recently, Wine and Movies.

Introduced (we think?) by the Arlington Drafthouse, this pairing of wines with movies, instead of popcorn with movies proves to be both a savory and cinematic combination. Now, a weekly event, Wine Night takes place every Friday evening at 6:15pm, and gives people a chance to sample a variety of wines selected for the evening’s event.

Further, wine experts from the Washington Wine Academy will discuss the selected wines, and just talk about wines in general.

Movie admission is only $5.50 for wine night, and wine pour tickets are $1.50 for 1 oz pour. You can also add multiple tickets together to get more than 1 pour’s worth.

Local High Schoolers Put on Punk Rock Concert!

Relatively local. It’s a D.C. event.

It’s not uncommon for there to be a battle of the [garage] bands, wherein hyperlocal bands and artists get together and compete in a “song vs. song” type format, often featuring bands from the same areas or schools.

The Youth Punk Show is a lot like that. Sort of.

Taking place on Fri., Jan. 20th at St. Stephen’s Church (A punk show at a church? *shrugs*), The Youth Punk Show features a variety of different punk rock bands from high schools in the Washington D.C. metro area.

Featuring the bands Foozle, Guilty, Coxey Brown, and The Black Sparks, this is a non-profit event where all proceeds from it go towards the All Ages Movement Project, which works to create all-ages spaces around the country that celebrate and connect people to music and art.

Tickets are $5 at the door.

St. Stephen’s Church is 20 minutes away from The Wellington Apartments.

Soar Down a Mountain at “The Art of Flight!”

People love flying. Whether it’s imagining ourselves as birds or speeding down a zip line, jumping out of an airplane (“This isn’t flying. It’s falling. With style.“), speeding down the highway on a motor cycle, or, in the case of this film, jumping out of a helicopter and snowboarding down a mountain.

No, seriously.

The Art of Flight is a film about epic snowboarding, and seeks to capture the dynamic intermingling of snowboarder with landscape that follows some of the worlds best snowboarders as they attempt incredible sports feats on mountains in Alaska, Chile, Aspen, British Columbia, and more!

The Art of Flight is being screened at The Arlington Drafthouse for two showings on Thurs., Jan. 19th (7:30pm; 9:45pm).

What’s more, this is a FREE event. But you must register online!

If you’re thinking that there’s nothing exciting going on around town this holiday season, then you would be wrong! Mostly! We think!

About.com recently posted their Top 10 Washington D.C. Holiday Events consider the following excerpts and examples for places to get together with friends and family and celebrate the festive spirit of the holidays.

1. Visit the National Christmas Tree (located 9 minutes away) at the Ellipse by the White House, this mammoth, luminous and decorated tree often boast carolers and other holiday entertainment.

4. Take a Candlelight Tour - The last available candlelight tour for the year is the Candlelight Tour of Historic Houses of Worship that takes place on Dec. 26th at 9pm in Frederick, Maryland (a bit of a drive).

6. See the Nutcracker - We have mentioned at least one production of The Nutcracker before. There are several going on throughout Virginia and Washington D.C..

7. Attend a Holiday Concert - There are several concerts going on at The Kennedy Center Concert Hall between the present and the end of the month.
