It tells story of my Papa Anton’s struggles as a young entrepreneur comparing meerkats on the streets of Moscow. This was a time when meerkat comparing was a new and unusual thing (as oppose to the high-technology, high-popular internet phenomenon it is today). My Papa faced many hardship and was force to deal with many ugly muskrats. But he survive. And succeed.
Already being hailed as one of the most anticipated titles for the PSP, Coded Arms is a fast-paced and aesthetically stunning first-person shooter set within a hastily abandoned Virtual Reality system. The VR universe was originally conceived as a training device to prepare mankind for an alien invasion, but was hurriedly shut down when the system became self-aware and created a brutal world populated with virtual, yet hostile alien races. Cast as a hacker, the player is equipped with an array of hi-tech weaponry and must cleanse the VR world of its unsavoury denizens. The game’s virtual landscape is split into three distinct worlds and enjoys a lavish level of detail and lighting effects that show off the power of the Sony system perfectly, while eerie lighting and shadow effects add to the ever-present oppressive atmosphere. Similarly, Coded Arms’ computer-devised aliens are equally impressive and range from enhanced soldiers, insect-themed species and robotic adversaries, each of which have certain vulnerabilities to specific weapons that the player can use to their advantage. Coded Arms also ensures the player is suitably equipped for the tough task that awaits them. Over 30 different weapon systems are available, with machine guns and pulse weapons and sniper rifles allowing for blanket or precision shooting, while a variety of grenade styles also feature in the game’s impressive arsenal. The game also makes use of the PSP’s wireless capabilities, with up to four players invited to compete in the game’s many multi-player modes. Any weapons collected by the player in the single-player mode can also be accessed during the multi-player games, further extending the longevity of this already engrossing shooter.

Utilising the latest advances in 2D and 3D CGI, Code Lyoko follows the adventures of four ordinary students who accidentally discover the existence of a mysterious parallel and virtual world called ‘Lyoko’ in an abandoned factory The students – Yumi, Ulrich, Odd and Jeremy – discover that both Earth and Lyoko worlds are jointly threatened with the release of a sentient virus, X.A.N.A, which has infected the Supercomputer and unleashed ghastly monsters. Joined by Aelita, a virtual friend from the Lyoko world, the students must lead double lives as boarding school students on Earth and action heroes inside the digital world of Lyoko, where they come to learn of their individual special powers and destiny. Developer Neko Entertainment has transformed Code Lyoko’s unique mix of high-tech gadgetry, adrenalin-packed missions and compelling storyline into an intuitive and innovative blend of adventure, combat, platform and racing gameplay, making the most of the features of the Wii remote in the process.

There are three different ways to play Crash Time. The Cases make up a story mode that can be played from start to finish. They follow a continuous plot and each case consists of multiple missions. The cases featured in the game are presented as crime stories and combine various missions. Once you have unlocked cars and tracks in the story mode, you can try them out in the single races. In a single race, you can freely select a track, opponent and traffic and adjust each to your own preferences. The split screen mode is similar to single race, but here you can compete against friends. Races can be configured freely, and each player can choose their own favourite vehicle before going head-to-head. If you’ve completed GTA IV already, or are just plain fed up with it after 10 days, here’s another mission-based driving game for your delectation, albeit one with no cussing and fighting.

Though it has been quiet on their front for sometime, Atomic Games are back with another title in their Close Combat series. Fans of realistic strategic war games will already be familiar with the series, of which there have been four iterations so far, all set in various theatres of the Second World War, like Normandy and Russia. Close Combat fans know them for a cerebral type of top-down strategy game, where the emphasis is placed more on sound tactics than frantic RTS-style reactive gameplay. This time the action follows the US Marine Corps in Beirut. Because of the nature of that conflict, and no doubt because of the popularity of the sub-genre in recent years, Close Combat: First to Fight is a strategic squad-based First Person Shooter. Developed with the help of more than 40 active service Marines returning from tours of duty in the Middle East, First to Fight will be used by the US military as a training tool and gives the player control of a four man Marine fire team fighting up close in the streets of the troubled city of Beirut. Squad gameplay is based on the tried and tested US Marine ‘Ready-Team-Fire-Assist’ tactical system. The phrase describes the roles of each of the members of a four man team, and comprises one leader (played by you), a heavy machine gunner and two soldiers with assault rifles. If that doesn’t sound like enough to help you survive in the Mediterranean hotspot, remember ‘A Marine is never alone’. Full tactical support is available in the form of SeaCobra helicopter gunships, amphibious landing vehicles, sniper teams, long range support from 81mm mortars, and the mighty M1A1 Abrams tank, which your team of four happens to be just large enough to crew. Like its strategic, larger scale battle predecessors, one of First to Fire’s selling points is its morale system. The morale of each character is calculated throughout, giving the game a psychological edge lacking in many of its competitors – outflanking manoeuvres will alarm and disorientate your enemy, and you can use the impressive firepower at your disposal to force him into the position you want him in. All in all, Close Combat: First to Fire looks like a fine game for those who like their squad-based shooting games with a heavy dose of factual realism.

Being more or less solely responsible for the popularisation of the survival horror genre, it’s only to be expected that Capcom should come up with the goods with the release of this latest scare-em-up. Co-developed by Sunsoft, Clock Tower 3 treads a similar path to the renowned Resident Evil series, whilst introducing new gameplay elements and placing a heavy emphasis on dramatic storytelling. Set in a number of locations throughout various different eras, including 1940′s London, the game sees players take on the role of Alyssa Hamilton, an English schoolgirl who learns that over the last century members of her family have been cursed to fight the powers of evil. Up until now, Alyssa’s relatives have failed in this ongoing struggle, so it seems like it’s up to her to sort things out. The game itself sees players take on the role of Alyssa as she attempts to escape various monstrous spirits in order to save herself and the tortured souls of their victims. Seeing as Alyssa is merely a 15-year old schoolgirl, she obviously doesn’t have a huge arsenal of weaponry at her disposal, like in most survival horrors. Instead, she must rely on her cunning and guile to evade the clutches of these evil spirits and unravel the puzzles behind each murder. Only then can she summon the sacred weapon necessary to destroy each sinister monster. A novel concept to the game is the way in which players experience Alyssa’s fear and trepidation. As her fear grows, so does her panic meter, with the result that Alyssa becomes harder to control, sometimes even stumbling and with the added confusion of the screen blurring. To alleviate these symptoms, players need to find a safe place to hide until the danger passes or use the calming effects of lavender. If you’re a fan of the genre, then you’re going to love this latest dose of spine-chilling gaming. It’s everything you’d expect from Capcom, and comes complete with cinematics from Kinji Fukasaku, the guy dubbed as the ‘last great Japanese action movie director’.

Jericho brings a touch of horror to the Rainbow-six style squad-based shooter genre. And who better to give it that touch than the revered poor man’s H P Lovecraft, Clive Barker. Clive is the man behind pinny headed horror ‘classic’ Hellraiser. In this game, you are Captain Devin Ross – one of a squad of seven Covert Occult Warriors (COWs – moo!) each of whom has para-psychological abilities such as clairvoyance or magic powers. As the game begins, with a quick cod-occult dream sequence and a typically Barker-esque picture of some rent flesh and a swarm of flies, your squad is dropped straight into the action as you enter the town of Al Khali and break into an ancient tomb. From here you are plunged into a familiar world of Rainbow Six style creeping and shooting against a horde of demonic opponents that have risen from the abyss via a dimensional rift. As the game progresses, you are taken by the dimensional rift through a series of locations that span space and time, though only time passed. This rift hasn’t managed to master future time travel yet, maybe in the sequel. Or maybe Clive doesn’t want tarring with the sci-fi author tag. In each different location and time, you continue the battle against the denizens of the abyss but as the battle progresses, your opponents get tougher. So you’ll need to rely more and more on your psychic abilities, as traditional weapons become less effective. In order to exploit the talents of all the team, you can switch between different squad members, and use their special skills. But beware, overuse of special powers will weaken your player, and make them more vulnerable, or less able to use their powers in future. The FPS is a classic game style, and the squad-based variant adds a little variety to all that shooting and strafing. Add to this the psychic aspect of the game, and you have something that approaches an original concept. Clive Barker’s special horror twist adds interest for those who do not find his style too turgid and adolescent: the rest may be happier with a more traditional Tom Clancy squad shooter game.

Circus Maximus: Chariot Wars is a fairly original concept in this day and age, considering the huge array of pastiches, conversions and sequels released each week. Admittedly, there are a million and one racing games out there but this one has certainly opted for the bizarre in the cases of the vehicles and setting. Chariot racing anyone? With a noticeable inspiration from Hollywood blockbuster Gladiator, Circus Maximus casts the player as a chariot racer in Ancient Rome. Set across 19 tracks spanning seven cinematic environments, from the sands of Alexandria to the Coliseum, the goal is to earn Dinari and advance through the ranks to become the greatest racer in town. Each chariot has both a driver and a warrior; the player has either complete control over the team or can let the A.I drive whilst taking control of the warrior. A second player can also join in for two-player co-operative play. Winning races rakes in the cash, which is required in order to progress to subsequent races. Running over helpless pedestrians or riding on one wheel also earns Dinari, which is thrown from the admiring crowd. Game modes include Arcade, Career, Training and Multi-player. Career mode sees the player begin the quest to be the best, offering various unlockable features along the way. Arcade mode allows for quick-fix, straight racing, whilst Multi-player supports two player co-operation or one-on-one races. In a genre that sometimes seems to be in danger of exhausting its possibilities, Circus Maximus has attempted to do something a little different with the racing game.

It is the near future, and unlike summer 2006′s North Korean fireworks display, things worldwide are getting scary. The trauma of living in a world of self-empowered willy-wavers has resulted in a plethora of Dick-slash-Heinlein-esque killing machines, striding across wartorn terrain, generally having a blast. Luckily, this Dystopia is not real. It is not the future, it’s just From Software and SEGA’s Chromehounds making its entry to the 360 fold. This Mech-a-licious squad-based action title puts players in control of giant mechanized dogs (hounds, see?) of war. There is a single-player option in Chromehounds, but the game is optimised for the multiplayer experience. Solo mode helps you hone your fighting style and brush up on your combat tactics before stepping out into the warzone in either competitive or cooperative gameplay in squads of Hounds. Different positions within squads are available: you can become just ‘one of the boys’ or you can take control as Tactics Commander and transform your team into the ultimate Mech destruction squad. So strap on the headset that comes bundled with your 360 and bark (ha!) your orders at your fellow hounds. World domination is the prize for the most powerful army in the field – North Koreans need not apply. Full customisation options invite players to equip and personalise their hounds in thousands of different ways. We are assured that no two hounds can turn out the same. It’s the ultimate Pimp My Mech experience, if you must.
