This is Gunther everybody. We introduced you to him on our Facebook page on Friday. Gunther spent the last two nights with us and several of you had questions about Gunther, who he belonged to, what kind of dog he was, and how well he got along with the kitties. So today we thought that we’d answer some of those questions.

So who is Gunther and what breed of dog is he?

Gunther is a Mini Schnauzer. He is approximately two years old and he lives with my Aunt P., Uncle L., and youngest cousin Casey.

Is this your sick Auntie’s doggie?

No. My Auntie L., is the one who is in the hospital. For those of you who are unaware, my Auntie L., recently underwent two surgeries. One to try and remove the cancer in her lungs and the other to try to get the fluid in her lungs, which was caused as a result of the first surgery, under control.

So If Gunther is not your sick Auntie’s doggie why was he staying with you?

My Auntie P., Uncle L., and cousin Casey live over three hours away from us and thus, three hours away from the hospital were my Auntie L., is being treated. So instead of spending six hours a day driving back and forth to the hospital, my Auntie P., Uncle L., and cousin Casey, stay over night at our house whenever they come up to visit my Auntie L., in the hospital.

So ok, that still doesn’t explain why Gunther came with them. Gunther came with my Auntie P., and Uncle L., because he had a negative reaction to being boarded last week. My Auntie P., and Uncle L., had to go out of town last week so they boarded Gunther for four days. Gunther, who is shall we say rather spoiled, kind of like me, didn’t take to well to being boarded. He got a really bad upset tummy and my Auntie P., and Uncle L., had to take him to the vet just to be certain that he didn’t pick up anything from the kennel. Gunther checked out ok, but we didn’t want to stress him out any more, so the Auntie P., and the Uncle L., brought Gunther with them when they came up for my Auntie L.’s second surgery.

What do dear Moki and his sisters think about having a dog in the house?

Us kitties don’t mind having Gunther around. Despite being only a little over 2 years old, Gunther is a really sweet, very calm, and well trained doggie. He never tries to chase us around the house and doesn’t so much as even bark at us when he sees us. In fact about the only thing Gunther would like to do is walk up to us and give us a big lick but he never does cause he seems to understand that we kitties demand our own space. Gunther is very respectful of our space. We can lay in the same room together and he won’t so much as bother us. Of course we are always supervised when we are around one another. If there is not someone around to watch us or if us kitties want some alone time then one of us has to go to our own room. Gunther has his own room at our house so we usually take turns spending time in our rooms depending upon our own preferences. My scratching post is in my room so I often prefer to lay in my room during the day cause there is a big glass door which I can look out of. Thus we don’t mind having Gunther around cause he coexists in our world purrfectly.

Love,

Moki The Wobbly Cat

Most responsible pet owners realize the dangers of placing their pets in airline cargo holds. We’ve heard horror story after horror story of pets being killed in such holds. We have in turn ran out and bought airline approved pet carriers and have patted each other on the back whenever we have made the choice to carry our pets on the plane with us instead of tucking them away in the planes cargo hold. The problem is while we have been busy patting one another on the back for being responsible pets owners, we have failed to give much thought to the actual safety of our pets when it comes to flying.

Sure, it’s much safer to have our pet stored away on the plane with us, but be honest, how many of us have thought about what would happen to our pets in the event of an in fight emergency? If the cabin pressure in the plane were to change, an oxygen mask might pop down for you, but what about your pet? Heaven forbid the plane had to make an emergency landing. You would have a nice floatation device but what would become of your pet in the event that the plane had to land in water?

So today we are going to help familiarize you with two products which every pet owner should carry while flying with their pets. The first product is Wag’ N 02 Fur Life Kit.

Image Credit: Wag’ N Pet Saftey

The Wag’ N 02 Fur Life Kit is an oxygen mask and kit which comes complete with:

* 3 Oxygen Masks – 1 small, 1 medium, & 1 large

* 3 Oxygen Air Tubes – 1 for each mask, 22 mm diameter

* 1 Wag’ N 02 Fur Life Carry Bag for easy storage & mobility

* 1 Laminated Instruction Sheet which includes ABC’s of CPR for cats & dogs

* 1 Kennel Lead for animal restraint & control

* 2 Animal Incident Report (Air) Forms for First Responders – carbonless 3-part form

* 1 Pet Rescue Notice Form provided in electronic format

* 1 Powerpoint presentation provided in electronic format

* 1″ Pet Oxygen Masks on Board Decal for display on windows/vehicles

The kit retails for $70.00 and can be purchased directly through Wag’ N Pet Safety’s website which can be found here: http://www.wagnpetsafety.com

The next product is a Ruffwear Float Coat.

The Ruffwear Float Coat features a strong handle on the top which makes holding onto your pet while in the water easy, and a 3M Scotchlite reflective trim, which will help you to spot your pet should they become separated from you. It’s a good, strong, solid life vest, and Ruffwear products are trusted by several search and rescue teams, so you know that they are built tough.

While in all likelihood you may never have to use these two products wouldn’t it be nice to know that they are there should you actually need them. After all it’s far better to be over prepared, particularly when it comes to the safety of our pets, than not prepared at all.

Love,

(Photo of Tai Before Losing Her Eye Site)

My Name is Yin Tai Qi but everyone calls me Tai or Tai Tai. Mom named me Yin Tai Qi, because mom wanted to give me a powerful name so that I would grow up big and strong. I am an 8 year old pug dog. I was born in a place called a puppy mill that was in Missouri—it is gone now. My mom’s sister worked at the puppy mill and she found me squished under some other puppies. She saw that my elbows were funny, but the owners did not take me to a vet. When I got older and my elbows were still funny they were going to put me down. My mom’s sister took me and gave me to mom because my mom has good luck with special pets. She said I was mom’s birthday present.

Mom took me to the vet when I was nine weeks old. The vet was very angry, first I thought it was at me or mom but she was angry at my breeder. I was apparently hurt around the time that I was born and both of my elbows were dislocated. If I had been brought to the vet when it happened our vet said “it would be an easy fix.” But by the time I was 9 weeks old the joint was already locked, there is a less than 3% range of motion. The problem that I have could have been fixed and/or prevented if I had had a responsible breeder.

I have another condition that is well, partially my fault—I thought I could beat up a bigger dog and got bit. My eye was injured in the fight and I had to have surgery to save it. While the nice vets were able to save my eye, because I am a pug dog and bracheocephelic (that means my face is pushed in and my nose is short) I have developed dry eye as a result of the bite and have slowly gone blind. To help treat my eye condition, I get special eye drops.

My Mom also massages, gently bends and stretches my front legs. She also massages and rubs my back and hind legs. It helps a lot. I also take metacam 4x a week. When I was little I had a cart that I pushed but I wanted to be like all the other dogs and they did not have a cart. I learned how to walk on my feet and not my ankles. I can go upstairs and down some stairs. I need help to get up on the sofa and on mom’s bed but I can do most anything my doggie sisters and brothers can.

There are a lot of other animals here- dogs; they are all older than I am and mostly are nice. Snuggles is the one who bit me. (*whispering* I tried to take her treat away) We live with kitties too, they are fun to chase-yes I chase the kitties and sometimes they let me catch them.

Mom and I play dress-up and fashion show. I like to dress up. Mom sings the sexy catwalk song and I run out and stop and turn around to show off what I am wearing.

My mom says that she could not imagine a time without me even when I am not feeling good, sometimes my legs are sore and I just want to hide and sleep. I get to spend my time with mom napping or playing or getting massages. I have a good life.

If you follow me on my Facebook page, then you know how much I love Greenies. I honestly can’t get enough of them. As most of you know, they are my all time favorite cat treat, so when I came home to find this box of Feline Greenies had been sent to me from the Greenies people, I was in shear heaven!

Included in my special box of treats were five bags of “Greenies Smartbites,” a new line of cat treats being launched by Feline Greenies. “Smartbites,” are treats for cats which “provide targeted health benefits,” with the new line including formulas for “Hairball Control,” “Healthy Skin & Fur,” and “Digestive Care.”

Unlike the original “Feline Greenies Dental Treats” however, “Smartbites,” have a hard, crunchy shell, and a creamy inside filling. They are only two calories per treat, and come in three yummy flavors, “Chicken,” “Salmon,” and “Tuna.”

The very best part however is, depending upon your weight and type of cat treat you chose, you can get your human to give you anywhere from 12 treats per day of the “Hairball Control,” formula…

To 16 or more cat treats per day, depending on your weight for the “Healthy Skin & Fur,”

or “Digestive Care,” formulas….

How pawsome is that!

So ok, now that we know that we can get our humans to give us lots of these pawsome treats, the big question remains, how do the treats taste?

They’re delicious!!!! So delicious in fact that I had to tell my sisters to keep their paws off…

Of course now that you have heard all about these yummy new treats I realize that you might be drooling from the mouth, dying in anticipation to try some, so I is going to share with you all how you can get some of your own.

Jerry’s Story As Told By Jerry Himself

My mama adopted me from the Wisconsin Humane Society in August of 2006. I had just turned 7 years old. She was looking for a boy kitty and I picked her! I had been adopted out of WHS once before but I am truly in my forever home now! A few days later mama took me to a vet. It wasn’t the usual vet, but it was a free exam so mama took advantage of it. I had funny brown spots on one of my eyes and mama asked the vet about them. The vet said it was nothing to worry about. A year later mama took me to our regular vet for a yearly wellness exam and the vet was concerned about the spots on my eye. She said mama should watch it to make sure I didn’t get more spots. When we got home mama looked at photos from the previous year and she could see the spots were getting worse. Mama took me to an animal ophthalmologist our vet recommended for an exam. He said I had Iris Melanosis and recommended my eye be removed or I would probably develop cancer. My left eye was removed in March 2008.

My eye was sent to a specialist at the vet hospital in Madison, Wisconsin and he looked at it to make sure I did not already have cancer, which I didn’t. I have adjusted very well. The problems are minor. The whiskers on that side of my face break a lot, but we don’t know why. Since they are short and stiff from being broken, they poke my mama sometimes! The vet thinks I might run into things on that side but mama has never seen me do that. She thinks my whiskers are just weak from the surgery. Also, if I am just hanging around somewhere I don’t see that someone is coming toward me from my left side. I still like to watch squirrels out the window and mama thinks my depth perception is just fine. One time when I was at the vet’s office the vet who had done my surgery came into the room with an intern. She told the intern about my condition and said that doing the surgery was ‘icky’! MOL! I bet it was! Both of my eyelids were cut and then sewn together so they would seal when they healed. I looked pretty pathetic right after the surgery and I had to wear a collar for a while. Mama kept me in a separate room and she slept in that room with me for a few nights. I couldn’t clean myself so mama cleaned me with baby wipes. She held my food and water bowls to my face so I could eat and drink. I have a big sister cat and a baby sister cat and they don’t treat me any differently. Mama says that now she would not hesitate to adopt another one-eyed cat. In fact, she almost did last summer. My sister Mitzi went to The Bridge in May 2011, and mama decided to wait until summer was over to adopt again. But, she kept looking at the WHS website, and one day there was a one-eyed kitten that was available and so mama set a deadline and if the kitten was still there she would have adopted her, but someone else saw how beautiful she was and she was adopted.

Today I thought I’d share with you some tips on how to take a great photograph of your cat. Taking a great photograph of your cat begins with some brain storming. Start by asking yourself what is it about your cat or their personality that makes him or her special, for example, are they lazy, do they sleep a lot, are they playful, etc. Once you have brainstormed a little and figured out the type of personality you would like to capture in your photograph, take some time to observe your pet. When is your cat most likely to preform this type of behavior? In the morning, afternoon, late at night, etc. Knowing your cats personality type and schedule will help you to set aside just the right time to photograph your pet.

Having said that, great photos not only start with preparation, they take time. Even professional photographers don’t capture the perfect shot on their first try, so you will need to block out some time from your schedule to do a photo shoot. Generally speaking most photographers would recommend that you block out anywhere from one to two hours worth of time to photograph your pet.

Once you have some time blocked out from your schedule, you’ll need to think about the location and set up of the shoot. Do you want to photograph your pet indoors or outside? Will you be using any props and if so what props would you like to use? Planning these things out in advance will allow you to have everything ready when it comes time to begin the shoot.

Before beginning the shoot however, you will need to pay close attention to the background of the photo. Is there a lot of clutter in the background? If so remove it. A cluttered background will distract a viewer from the image of your pet. If your shooting indoors, try to shoot your photographs against a solid color wall, or if need be drape a solid color sheet in the background to serve as a backdrop for your photo. If you are shooting outside, look for a nice patch of grass, or similar setting in which your pet can lay, walk or run. Since lighting can also make or break a photograph it’s important to pay close attention to it as well. When photographing an animal it’s always best to photograph in natural light whenever possible since using a flash can frighten many animals and lead to problems such as red eye or squinting.

Finally set your camera to burst mode. Burst mode is a continuous shooting mode which will allow you to rapidly fire off one photograph after another. By setting your camera to burst mode you will be more likely to capture the perfect shot. Once your camera has been set to burst mode you are ready to begin taking photos.

When photographing, try playing around with different frames and perspectives. Get down to your pets level and shoot upwards, try standing on a chair and shooting your photos looking downwards. Take a few closely cropped facial shots focusing on various parts of your pet, such as their eyes, ears, nose or whiskers and then play around some with full or three quarter body shots. Last but not least, and perhaps most importantly, make sure the shoot is fun for both you and your pet.

The History Of Jeff Industries:

“Jeff Industries was started by a group of parents and is the result of a grass roots effort. In the mid 1970′s, a young man named Jeff was about to graduate from college when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed to the State Mental Hospital. He spent seven years in the hospital prior to being released to his elderly parents, not because he was better, but because a law suit determined the state hospital was a bad place. Jeff moved back in to his boyhood bedroom in Delray Beach where he would continue to exhibit the same serious symptoms of mental illness that put him in the hospital. One day a month his dad would take him from his room to the South County Mental Health Center to see his doctor. The doctor would spend the allotted twenty minutes with him, give him a prescription for medication and reschedule him for the next month. One morning his dad knocked on Jeff’s bedroom door to gather him for his next doctor’s appointment when he heard a gunshot. Jeff put a gun in his mouth, pulled the trigger and killed himself. Jeff left a note stating, ” I have no reason to wake up.” At that time there were no (zero) community-based programs in place that assisted persons with mental illnesses in getting on with their lives and integrating them into the mainstream community. In 1983 Jeff Industries was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) agency by his parents/grass roots Board of Directors. Jeff Industries, Inc. was created to fill a need for meaningful community-based programs that assisted mentally ill persons in the transition from hospital to the community. Adults with serious mental illnesses were given the opportunity to be productive and to increase self-esteem by building picnic tables and bike racks, etc. This program helped ease these individuals back into the community and gave them “a reason to wake up.”

“Over the years, the Jeff Industries blossomed into a regarded multi-faceted, vocational training and employment oriented therapeutic rehabilitation center. The adult work center offers paid training and employment opportunities through Tropical Sun Enterprises (i.e. bakery cafe’: embroidery and fabric printing; CNC routed and sandblasted signs; vinyl lettering; large format digital printing; general construction and woodworking; janitorial services) as well as, job placement services. The work/vocational center has received Local, State and National recognition, and has been recognized as one of only three state-wide mental health organizations for use of Best Practices by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (Nami).”

Hi Gizzmo, can you tell us a little bit about yourself i.e., a brief introduction to how you got your name & found your forever home?

Your a wobbly cat is that correct? Can you tell us a little bit about your condition? What exactly is your condition called? How did you get it and what if anything can be done to prevent it?

Yes. I be born with it, let my dad explain..

Gizzmo has Cerebellar axtaxia. This is caused by problems with the cerebellum which is an area of the brain involved in controlling balance and coordination. Affected cats often stand and walk with their legs far apart and may be described to have a high stepping gait (goose stepping). Cats with cerebellar problems find it difficult to make accurate calculations when jumping and so often do this in a very exaggerated way. Tremors, which in some cats get worse when they go to do something such as eating (referred to as an intention tremor), may also be seen. Hers came from her mother, a feral cat from a recycling plant that got Feline Panleukopenia while she was pregnant. The only way you can keep cats from getting this is to make sure they get their shots before they can get pregnant.

Image credit: Gizzmo The Super Kitty
