A Caution On Background Checks

If you go online, there is no shortage of companies that will supply you with an "instant background check." In addition, the past few months have given us a variety of smart phone apps promising to do the same. You need to give some thought on what you are trying to accomplish before using any of these sites or apps.

If you are looking for someone to care for your child or perhaps you are in a relationship and something starts to feel "off", then these sites and apps are not the way to go. Why? In a word, accuracy. There are false positives, (someone shows a criminal record which actually belongs to another person) false negatives (a person shows no criminal record when there really is), outdated information and more.

Doing a complete and accurate background check will involve wearing out a little shoe leather. Making trips to the courthouse to check records which may not have made it to an online data base. Checking variations of the name you are searching. You get the picture.

If you or your child's safety could be at stake, get a professional to do it for you. A private investigator will know where to look and what to look for. Child care? Go through an agency that has an investigator on staff and does backgrounds. These options will cost more, but what is your safety or the safety of your child worth?

I have used these online services and some private investigators use them from time to time. However, they are simply used as a starting point, not the end result. From there, shoe leather and phone calls come into play to verify information and to locate information which may be missing.

A caveat. Nothing is 100% and guaranteed. But doing it the right way when it counts gives you a huge advantage in reducing the chances that something will go wrong.

Home Burglary Prevention: Dummy Cameras

As in my last post, this one will deal with making a would-be burglar think twice about targeting your house. This time I will talk about surveillance cameras, specifically, dummy cameras. A camera surveillance system is a great crime fighting tool. Not only will it give pause to the bad guys, if they still choose to target you, chances are good you will get some great footage of their activities and give you a leg up on identifying and catching the perpetrators.

But what if your budget can't bear the cost of a surveillance system? I have two suggestions. First, advertise the fact that you have video surveillance with stickers in the windows and perhaps a sign in the yard. Only you will know that you don't have surveillance. Second, purchase and install a few low cost dummy cameras. Be sure to mount them where they can be seen.

Dummy cameras are simply an actual camera housing minus a real camera. Many have a battery operated red LED along with power and signal cables to give the illusion of authenticity. The combination of signs/stickers and dummy cameras can be a great crime deterrent. Dummy cameras can also be used to add to an existing system, giving the impression you have more camera coverage than you actually have. If you do this, make sure to train the real cameras on the most probable points of entry!

No matter what your budget is, there is always something you can do to reduce your chances of becoming a crime victim!

Home Burglary Prevention: The Family Dog

The great majority of burglars are looking for an easy mark. Get in, get out, as quickly as possible without drawing attention to themselves. Just be aware that there are some really dumb and determined criminals out there who may try and break in no matter what you do. Owning a dog can be a great deterrent to someone burglarizing your home. The bad guys simply don't want to risk the barking drawing attention to them or risk getting bit, so they will move on.

I wrote this with those of you who don't own dogs in mind. Simply giving the impression you have a dog can be a great deterrent. Start with posting warning signs such as "Beware of Dog" or "Guard Dog on Duty." Then you can go one step further by putting a water bowl outside and perhaps a chewed rawhide you get from a friend who does have a dog. (The bigger, the better!)

Finally you could finish off the illusion with a device known as the Electronic Secure Dog. This great device can detect motion through windows, walls and doors up to a distance of 10 to 20 feet. The barking will get louder and more frequent the closer someone gets to the house.

So, even if you don't have a dog, if the the bad guys think you do, they will likely leave you alone and move on to someone else! Again, nothing is 100% effective or foolproof, but utilizing some or all of these tips can reduce your chances of being victimized.

Protecting Yourself From a Home Invasion

Last week I posted a story to Twitter about a string of home invasions in Maryland. There seems to be one constant in home invasions, they are always violent. I thought I'd take this opportunity to throw some tips and suggestions out on reducing your chances of becoming a victim.

I'm going to start with the obvious. Keep your doors locked, yes, even when you're home and NEVER open the door to someone you don't know! All they need is a fraction of an inch and they can power their way into your home. So, make sure you have, at minimum, a peephole in the door and maybe even a home surveillance system to monitor your front door.

Make sure the strike plates for the dead bolt (dead bolts are a must!) are secured by screws at least 3" in length. The bolt itself should be hardened steel and extend a minimum of an inch. This applies to both front and back doors.

Next, should someone gain access to your home, what to use for protection or defense. I know a lot of people have firearms for home protection. I have no problem with that, provided it's legal and you've had proper training. However, you may not walk around your house with a firearm on your person or have it readily accessible near the door. I would suggest as a primary or secondary means of defense, either pepper gel or pepper foam. These will do the job and will contaminate the air to a far lesser degree. There are even wall clips you can mount next to the door to hold the pepper spray so it's right there if you need it. Make sure to mount it high enough to keep it out of the reach of children.

These tips, combined with a healthy dose of common sense, and you're well on your way to reducing the possibility of you becoming a victim of a home invasion!

Monitoring Your Surveillance System

Stun Gun, Pepper Spray, Taser®...Which Should I Carry?

A question I hear rather frequently is "What is the best weapon I can carry to defend myself?" This is a question to which there is no one good answer. There are a few things to take into consideration. First, let me say that we will restrict this discussion to less than lethal weapons. If you own a firearm and carry, I would fully support that decision. But many people are not comfortable with a firearm. So let's get to it.

One of the factors to consider is how close to your attacker are you willing to get? Perhaps you are small or don't have a lot of strength. In this case you wouldn't want a stun gun, as they require you to make contact with your attacker. Although, the sight of the arc and the sound the stun gun makes is often enough to make the would-be attacker think twice. In any case you might want to consider pepper spray or a C2 Taser®. Pepper spray has a range of 6 feet to 20+ feet, depending on the model. The C2 Taser® has a range of 15 feet and can also be used as a regular stun gun should you miss your target.

The so-called "key chain weapons" are something I think everyone should have. Greywolf Security carries three varieties. The Kubotan, the Heart Attack and the Wild Kat. All three are made to go on your key chain and all three are primarily used to strike your attacker. Whether you choose these as your primary means of defense or as a handy back up, you should have one!

Lastly, and this is REALLY important, whatever you choose to carry, be sure you are willing to use it! And you should be prepared and willing to use it repeatedly if necessary. If you have any reservations about using your weapon of choice, don't carry it! Any hesitation during a confrontation will only get you hurt or worse.

Whatever you choose, become intimately familiar with it and practice, practice, practice with it until using it becomes second nature! So there you have it. As you can see, there is no weapon which is perfect for everyone. It's a personal choice tailored to you.

Help Us Reduce Stalking And Domestic Violence Related Homicides

Stalking. Following, threatening and terrorizing the victim to the point they are always looking over their shoulder, unable to live their lives normally, often developing physical symptoms, fearing for their own or family members safety. In some cases, this culminates in the unthinkable, the death of the victim.

Domestic violence often follows a similar path. The emotional and verbal abuse, financial abuse, cyber abuse, sexual abuse and physical abuse escalates. The physical abuse can eventually become extremely violent, again, often culminating in the victims death.

I, for one, have a hard time understanding this behaviour. Whatever happened to rational communication, counseling or just walking away? After all, the perpetrators are doing these things to someone they "love." Apparently, someone changed the definition of love when I wasn't looking. Reports of stalking and domestic violence are on the increase and resources for victims are strained beyond capacity or just non-existent. Instances of stalking and domestic violence related homicides are increasing at an alarming rate.

Basic Tips For Using Pepper Spray

Pepper Spray is the most popular non-lethal personal defense product used by the public. I'd like to go over a few basic tips to using pepper spray you should keep in mind.

First, and I've said this a hundred times, be alert and aware of your surroundings. Also, have the spray readily accessible or, better yet, in your hand. It won't do you a whole lot of good if you have to go digging and searching for your pepper spray! If you see the assailant coming, you've already got an advantage. You have taken the element of surprise away from them and you are ready to act.

Another thing to remember, don't raise your arm to use it, yelling that you have pepper spray until it is correctly positioned in your hand. If you have your arm up and the spray is not properly positioned so you are fumbling with it, yelling and advertising the fact you have pepper spray, it only gives your attacker the opportunity to knock your hand away, perhaps knocking it out of your hand.

Have the spray in your hand, properly positioned. When your attacker is in range of the pepper spray, bring your arm up and aim for the eyes, sweeping from ear to ear. When they react, that is your cue to run to safety and call the police.

Even if you don't see your assailant coming and he grabs you, if you have the pepper spray in your hand and ready to go, you still may have the opportunity to use the spray. When he lets go, and he will, run to safety and call the police.

Pepper Spray is not that hard to use, basically point and shoot. However, I have always recommended that you check to see if there is a training course available in your community. In many communities, the police department, YMCA or other organization will offer these courses. Here is why I think these are a good idea. Other than getting a lot of good information about the spray and effects of the pepper spray, they teach the best way to utilize pepper spray in various situations. Frontal attack, attack from behind and how to handle multiple assailants. It's just something to consider...

Cell Phone Data Recovery

This post is an extension of my last post on USB thumb drive tools. This time I'll be introducing devices for cell phone data recovery. Greywolf Security carries two devices for this function. One is for the iPhone and the other is for Android phones.

I know most of us (me included!) have accidentally deleted something we needed from our phones. Or even intentionally deleted something, only to discover a few days later, we needed it! These two devices, the Android Recovery Stick and the iRecovery Stick are very similar in the functions they perform.

As long as the data has not been written over, deleted data can be recovered. What kind of data are we talking about? First, these devices will not only retrieve deleted data, but many of the files on the phone, deleted or not. Among the files retrieved are text messages, call history, photos, web history, contacts and more!

Who needs these devices? The business person whose life is on their phone, any business who issues company phones for business, security, schools, private investigators and yes, even the spouse who suspects the his/her mate is up to no good!

You would be well advised to stay within the law when using these devices, you can't just run around willy-nilly pulling data off peoples phones! Computer Monitoring and Surveillance

Keeping your kids safe on the Internet can seem like a daunting task at best. As parents, you absolutely need to talk to your kids about online predators, cyber bullying and a host of other age inappropriate things that can be found on the Internet. You need to set down rules to be followed and have the computer in a common room to lessen the likelihood that they are getting into something they shouldn't.

Recently, Greywolf Security has added a few tools to perhaps make your job as a parent a little easier. First, we have two products which can make monitoring and controlling the computer a breeze.

IntelliSpy Computer Activity Tracking Software allows for key logging, so you can see everything that is typed from the keyboard and it will take screenshots at one minute intervals, allowing you to see what your child has been looking at. The Porn Detection Stick will scan all the images on your computer for pornographic content, create a report of suspected images even from deleted files. You can then review and remove any objectionable images. This is not only a great tool for parents, but also employers, churches and schools.

Your First Line of Defense in Personal Safety

When talking about personal safety, the first line of defense is YOU! Yes, it's good to carry something to defend yourself with, but many times, dangerous situations can be avoided by keeping a couple of things in mind when you go out.

First, always be aware of your surroundings. This means the total picture. Especially at night, you need to be aware of places where someone could conceal themselves. For instance, doorways. Don't walk next to a building, stay out on the sidewalk away from the building. Parking lots. Walk down the center of the aisle, not next to the cars. In doing this, you take away the biggest advantage an attacker has, surprise. Be aware of the people around you. Someone you don't know paying more attention to you than they should or following you. I'm not saying you should be paranoid, just aware!

Next, trust your "gut". If you are in a situation that just doesn't feel right, something is off, remove yourself from that situation immediately. Or there's something about a person that "gives you the creeps", get away from them. More often than not, your "gut" is going to be right! Listen to what you're feeling and act accordingly.

The last point I'd like to make is this, don't look like a victim, don't act like a victim! Predators look for someone they percieve as weak. You need to walk erect, head up, making eye contact with people. Walk around like you own the place! A would-be assailant is much less likely to attack someone who looks confident and strong. As an added bonus, with your head up and making eye contact, you're taking away the element of surprise.

These points can't guarantee that you won't be the victim of a crime, but they go a long way toward reducing the chances of you becoming a victim. Something to remember if you carry pepper spray or a stun gun. In situations where you may need them, such as being alone while walking to your car, have them in your hand and ready to use!

Two New Stun Guns: Lightning In Your Pocket!

Pictured on the left is the Lipstick Stun Gun. This stun gun is really small, measuring only 3" in length! It is designed to look just like lipstick and it is small enough to fit any size purse or even a makeup pouch.

To use the Lipstick Stun Gun, you have to remove the cap. You will note the two buttons on the side. One is to activate the stun gun, the other operates a flashlight! This little powerhouse delivers 950,000 volts and is rechargeable. (charger included)

For most people, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. The original intent of the holiday seems to have been lost with many people today. I just want to remind people what the holiday stands for.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was first observed in 1868 to remember the fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Memorial Day was first used informally in 1888 and gradually gained acceptance as the preferred name for the holiday. It wasn't until 1967 that it officially was named Memorial Day by federal law. The date too, has changed. May 30th was the official day the holiday was observed until 1968 when the federal government changed it to the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to this great country. We should not, we cannot, let them be forgotten. So please, take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this proud holiday. If only for a moment, give thought to those who selflessly gave their lives over the history of the United States for country, for you and for those who came before you.

One more thing. I know that our current conflicts are not popular with many people. Vietnam was especially unpopular. Perhaps not as widespread and common as it was during Vietnam, there are those who direct their displeasure in unkind ways at the returning veterans. If you are not happy with our involvement in foreign countries, I ask that you direct your anger to an appropriate target. Take it up with your Senators, Congressmen and even the President. Voice your opinion! But don't you dare take it out on the men and women who proudly serve this country. If you know a veteran or know of a veteran, take a moment out of your day to let them know they are appreciated and how proud you are of them. 'Nuff said!

Police, Budget Cuts and the Pen Camera

In the current economy, budget cuts are everywhere. It is now to the point where the once untouchable law enforcement budgets are now on the chopping block big time. All across the country, budget cuts are forcing unprecedented layoffs in police and other law enforcement agencies. The cuts also affect equipment maintenance and procurement.

This has forced law enforcement to adapt their methods to cope with the cuts. With manpower down, the reliance on technology already in place is increasing. There is more reliance on social networks, technology such as shot-spotters and surveillance cameras, both from the public and private sector.

This is what caught my attention. TASER® produces a body worn camera system specifically for law enforcement. It's function is to provide a record of any incidents where abuse or misconduct is alleged or just to help sort out what may have transpired during any one particular incident.

For Austin Texas police, the budget situation is not much different than anywhere else. Money is tight. We just introduced a new hidden camera which addresses two very important aspects of home security, lighting and camera surveillance.

This camera has motion detection capabilities. When motion is detected, the light comes on and the camera starts recording. This camera has a built-in DVR which comes with an 8GB micro SD card which will hold approximately 5 hours of video. The camera can support up to a 32GB micro SD card.

I used the word "important" earlier. Here's why. Both of these features, light and cameras, are major deterrents in preventing break-ins. The bad guys love the dark and they certainly don't want to be identified!

Today I'd like to introduce you to Pepper Gel. If you already carry pepper spray, you might consider this a step up. There are several advantages to pepper gel over standard pepper spray.

Longer Distance. Most pepper sprays have an effective range of 6 to 8 feet, some a little more, some a little less. Pepper Gel has a range of up to 18 feet! Of course, the closer you are to your target, the more accurate you will be.
