Today we have a guest post by Michelle Brooks, author of Bone Dressing. I asked her to answer a few questions on her writing style, practice, and her newly released book, which she turned into a fabulous article. Enjoy!

Rachel has asked me to answer some questions and to tell a little about myself…

Hmm, a little about myself, let’s see …

Well, let’s start with writing. It’s something I’ve never really thought much about, I’ve just always done it. So, I can’t really say when I wanted to be an author, I don’t know that I really am. I’m just me, who writes … only now, perhaps others will read those words from time to time …

I can say that I genuinely love to write. I laugh and I cry and I fuss and stew … whatever my characters are going through, that’s what I’m feeling as I write. The happy pages are great, the others, the hostile, frightening or sad ones, can get to be a bit overwhelming. Those I sometimes have to stop and start, write them in pieces small enough for me to swallow. I have to say though, my husband and kids are great at helping me get my feet back on the ground during those times.

I also love being able to write anywhere … snuggled up in bed on a Sunday morning like today, at the park on a beautiful sunny day, on my balcony at sunset. I write most often by sunlight or candlelight, there’s just something soothing about it. Feeding my senses with a hot cup of coffee, the smell of incense curling softly in the air, the cool breeze playing along my skin, soft music dancing around my head, brings the feelings, releases any inhibitions, and has the words spilling out of me and onto the pages.

So, writing tends to be a release for me, not a chore. It’s never a have-to, it’s simply a want-to, a part of me. Literally. I write as much as I can write, as often as I can do it. Life has others ideas sometimes though, like earning money with a standard 8-to-5 job, feeding a hungry family of five, and enjoying those wonderful people who share this life with me …

I would love to be able to write full-time, and perhaps one day Bone Dressing will accommodate that. But that day is not this day. So, for now it’s a great balancing act and that’s okay. At least I’m able to find some time to put pen to paper, some time to love, some time to laugh …

I guess in part, that’s what Bone Dressing is about to me. It’s about living one’s life. A chosen life, not an accidental life. It’s not a book about being perfect, it’s more about understanding that we are all capable of wonderful things, amazing things – both good and bad … and that’s perfect. This life is meant to be lived, to be felt. It’s okay if our knees get a little skinned up from time to time. That just reminds us we’re real, that we actually exist.

I’ve read a lot of comments on Syd, the lead character in the book. Some people really connect with her, others not so much. But all of them come to understand that while Syd may be confused, a somewhat rough around the edges, and prone to tough decisions, she’s not simply the sum of those decisions. She’s a girl on the edge of becoming a woman, and she’s trying, she’s trying to figure out who she is and who she wants to be.

When the idea of Bone Dressing came to me, so did the idea that it should be written in a way wherein the reader would have the opportunity to go through their own learning curve, rather than just read about the growth of the characters in the book. That being the case, I wanted Syd’s actions, and she herself perhaps, to be judged by the reader. Those who connect with her simply understand her and grow with her. Those who don’t understand Syd, instantly judge her. And it’s not until the end of the book that they see that perhaps their initial interpretation was misplaced or mistaken.

So, the reviews and feedback I receive from people who adore Syd and slip right into her skin as if it were their own are absolutely phenomenal. They fill my cup right up to the brim with joy and appreciation. But the reviews and comments from those who don’t quite get Syd, who have to struggle pulling her on and still don’t quite fit, they’re good too, just in a different way. They show me that the experience I wanted those readers to have worked just the way I wanted it to. Bone Dressing isn’t for everyone, no single book is. But hopefully Bone Dressing is for some, and those people will, I hope, find something they like within the pages.

Pages … I guess with e-books, that may become archaic, or at the very least inaccurate. What an experience to self-publish! Such freedom, and frustration, and satisfaction … all dependent upon you, resting on your shoulders. For myself, I love it, but then, I have my husband, William, right here helping with that end of things. And what a big end it is … Create Space, Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Nobel, Twitter, Facebook, Blogger and web sites … my goodness. Then there’s designing the paperback (thank God for Emlyn and Lee with Novel Publicity!) and the book trailer (thank God for me … and that I still have hair!). So much goes into self-publishing. But it is so incredibly fulfilling, rewarding. Can’t wait to do it again!

So, for now, I’d better get back to it … writing, loving, living, breathing, cooking, dancing, kissing … I’ve got six more books to pull Syd through, although at times, I think she pulls me through! I’m also in the middle of a non-fiction book. So, life is a little busy.

But that’s okay. This isn’t an accidental life I’m living, it’s a chosen one. And I can’t wait to see where it takes me …

Bridges: a Tale of Niagara - Book Review

Bridges: A Tale of Niagara is a coming of age novel following the lives of five young boys looking for adventure in the depths of the forbidden falls of Niagara. After curiosity strikes from pictures in the favorite hangout, Ol' Gordy's store, they decide to cross the epic ice bridge where many others have succumbed. Yet, they overestimate their power over the natural beauty and tumble into an exploration of nature, history, and themselves.

In addition to these five unique stories, readers will discover the stories of a hermit living in the falls, newlyweds visiting the day the falls stop, memories of slaves crossing during the Civil War, and much more. These tales are woven seamlessly into the plot line of the five boys bringing a tale of many generations to life. Bridges is a story of crossing the uncrossable and emerging with unexpected, but necessary knowledge and appreciation.

As a lover of the beach and heat, I was hesitant to read this story of icy waters. Yet dk LeVick pulls you in for a chilly tale that warms your heart to these stories. I have never visited Niagara before, and had previous misconceptions that it was merely a large waterfall. But after reading this book, I'm eager for my own appreciation of the majestic waters and all its power.

Perspective changes allow a greater view and understanding of all the characters. By writing in third person, Terri is able to easily transform the current perspective. These frequent shifts allow you the reader to hate a character one minute, and sympathize with them the next. It allows the best understanding of the emotions of everyone involved. This love-hate relationship makes the characters and the story seem real and alive.
Terri's writing style is natural, casual, and easy to read. She is able to describe accurate descriptions of difficult situations effectively. She also has the gift of being bluntly honest about drugs, sex, and rebellious teenage feelings in a natural way without overdramatizing it.
There isn't a single moment when you realize you truly care about these characters, rather you unconsciously knew it all along. They're all so relatable and understandable that you just feel a natural tenderness, sympathy, and curiosity toward the Tyler family.
All the characters have natural flaws that take time to recognize and fix. This makes each character individually complex, and brings them to life. Sometimes when writing flaws for a character it can seem fake or forced. But Terri allows her characters to feel life-like.
The way Leah thinks about her family when she's missing them is touching and sweet. It makes you love and appreciate your family more. As you grow closer to the Tyler family, you also grow closer to your own.

17 Q&A With Terri:

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I’ve always been a writer at heart. As a child, I entertained myself by making up stories and acting in my own improvisational plays. In high school, my hobbies and activities mostly involved writing. One day, brazenly, I walked into the editor’s office at the town paper and asked for a job. Initially, I covered sports and other high school news. Eventually, the editor gave me my own column. I was sixteen. That column was my first paid writing job. I earned about a dollar a week – and I knew then that the only job I’d ever want would be as a writer.

What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

Writing – I can’t imagine not writing. I’ve been a writer, in one form or another, my whole life. Writing transports me; I lose myself in the process.

What is your writing schedule like?

Ideally, I blog in the morning and either write or edit the novel I’m working on from early afternoon until dinnertime. This schedule doesn’t always work. We just finished the school year at Boston College; during crunch time, when I’m busy editing and grading students’ papers, my own work falls by the wayside. I’ve neglected my novel for the last month, and I’m eager to dig in again. Typically, it takes me a few weeks to catch up and get back into a regular routine.

In the past, I insisted that students write every day. I believe now that rules are counterproductive. The right way to do anything is the way that works best for you. Life interferes with the best-laid plans. You can fight it or go with it. I try to go with it. Of course, I don’t always succeed.

What is your book, In Leah's Wake, about, in your own words?

In Leah’s Wake tells the story of a family in collapse. Sixteen-year-old Leah, a star soccer player, has led a perfect life. When she meets a sexy older guy, attracted to his independence, she begins to spread her wings. Drinking, ignoring curfew, dabbling in drugs—this feels like freedom to her; her terrified parents, thinking they’re losing their daughter, pull the reigns tighter. Unfortunately, they get it all wrong, pushing when they ought to be pulling, and communication breaks down. Soon, there’s no turning back. Twelve-year-old Justine caught between the parents she loves, and the big sister she adores, finds herself in the fight of her life, trying desperately to pull her family together.

What inspired you to write this story?

Years ago, I wrote a series of feature articles about families with drug and alcohol-addicted teens. The moms talked candidly about their children, their heartbreaking struggles. Those stories stayed with me.

My husband and I have four daughters. When I began writing In Leah's Wake, they were teens. Most families struggle in some way during their children's teenage years. We’re no different - though, thank goodness, we experienced nothing remotely like the problems and challenges the Tylers face in the book.

As a parent, I know how it feels to be scared, concerned for your children’s future. That, I think, was the primary force behind this story.

All these things played on my conscious and subconscious mind, and ultimately emerged as this book.

What successes have you had with this novel?

Publishing it myself is, in my mind, a success story. In 2006, the book was under contract with an indie publisher. Shortly before the release, things fell apart. Not long after (unrelated to me), the company folded. I sent the book to a handful of agents, received lovely, complimentary responses, but no offers. I really believed in this book. I’d received so much encouragement over the years, from agents, editors, readers, writer friends—I’m grateful, truly grateful to all of them—that I had a hard time letting go. For years, I tried to revise. Eventually, I realized I was writing in circles. The book had changed, but it had gotten no better. Reluctantly, I put it away.

Last year, after several false starts, I finally gained traction on a new novel, a psychological thriller, Nowhere to Run. Like In Leah’s Wake, Nowhere is, at heart, a family story. I anticipate finishing the new novel this fall. I knew I’d need a platform and hoped that self-publishing In Leah’s Wake would help me build one. A lot of people are self-publishing, but this was a new – and scary – avenue for me. It’s been bumpy ride – and the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.

What was difficult about writing this novel, or any other books you’ve written?

For a lot of writers, it’s facing a blank screen, revising, dealing with rejection. I struggle with all of this, too, to varying degrees. For me, sustaining belief—not in the project, but in myself—is, by far, the biggest challenge. I wonder if I’m on the right track, constantly second-guess myself, which results in periods of, let’s say, creative procrastination.

Why do you like writing in this genre?

Families fascinate me. While my stories differ—I’m currently working on a psychological thriller with a historical twist—they always tie back to the family, the ways we love, yet often hurt one another, the grief, the sorrow, the revelation, the joy. I think people connect with these stories. I’ve heard from so many readers – family, friends, reviewers, readers I’ve never met. They tell me In Leah’s Wake feels real, the problems complex. They’ve been there – as a parent or a teen. They feel like they know these characters, and they care about them. This connection, for me, is the most important reason for writing.

What do you hope readers will get from your story?

The epigraph, from The Grand Inquisitor, says it best: “everyone is really responsible to all men for all men and for everything.” The Tyler family is far from perfect, but they love one another. Our flaws make us human and our humanity connects us. I hope readers feel that sense of connection—and hope.

Where can readers get a copy of your novel?

In Leah’s Wake is available as an e-book or paperback through all the major online bookstores – Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Powells, and others. If you’d prefer to support your local bookstore or borrow the book from your library, please ask the person in charge to order a copy. Early this summer – I’m excited about this – In Leah’s Wake will be available as an audio book.

What was the process you went through for publishing this novel?

It took 12 years, with periodic breaks, to finish and publish this book. Before it went under contract with the indie publisher, two major houses expressed interest; in both cases, the timing was bad. While it’s frustrating to come so close, it’s not uncommon in this business.

Last year, when I decided to self-publish, I contacted a wonderful press. They still print my promotional copies, but I decided not to publish with them because their price structure was inflexible and I felt it important for the novel to be affordable for readers. For a reasonable fee, they designed the cover and interiors and gave me the files to load into Createspace and Kindle, and they’ve helped me make changes along the way. Novel Publicity will produce the audio book.

What are your thoughts on the publishing revolution concerning e-books and self-publishing?

This is an exciting time for both readers and writers. The gatekeepers no longer hold all the power; today readers can choose from a rich selection of traditionally and indie published books. Writers whose books might never have been published under the old system are enjoying phenomenal success. I’m awed and encouraged by this.

That said, self-publishing is by no means easy. The logistics of self- publishing aside, you have to work tirelessly to promote yourself, and not everyone has the stomach for that. I haven’t heard anyone else say this, so I may be out to lunch, but I also see a disturbing trend among some traditionally published writers to denigrate self-publishers.

We’re in a brave new world of publishing. No one knows how this will shake out. I think we should remember that we’re all is this together. We need each other – writers are avid readers, after all – and we should, to the best of our ability, respect and support one another.

What projects are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a contemporary psychological thriller with a historical twist.

Nowhere to Run takes place in the White Mountains in northern New Hampshire. A year after the brutal murder of her six-year-old daughter, Abby Minot, formerly an award-winning writer, accepts her first assignment—a profile of the philanthropic Chase family, kin of the popular New Hampshire senator and presidential hopeful, Matthias Chase.

In her initial research, Abby glimpses darkness under the Chase family’s shiny veneer. Digging deeper, she uncovers a shocking web of lies and betrayal, dating back to the nineteenth century. Abby soon finds herself trapped—between an editor obsessed with uncovering the truth and the town and family who will stop at nothing to ensure it stays hidden.

I hope to complete the novel this fall.

What are your future goals?

I’d love to see In Leah’s Wake turned into a major motion picture. LOL. What writer wouldn’t love to see his or her book on the big screen? Realistically, I hope to continue writing, building an audience. I hope readers enjoy my books and that, in some small way, my works gives them hope and makes them feel connected to the community around them.

What advice do you have for other writers?

Believe in yourself. I know wonderful writers whose first, second or third books, really good, strong books, were rejected. To deal with the rejection, boot your computer, day after day, when it seems as if no one cares, the stars misaligned – to self-publish in a world that still privileges the traditionally published - you have to believe in yourself.

Writing is a lonely profession. Most of the time, we’re alone with our work. The loneliness can wear on you, and cause you to question yourself. A few supportive writer friends can help and encourage you.

Hold onto your dreams. You can make them happen. Don’t ever give up!

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite activity is spending time with my family. I also enjoy traveling, meeting new people. Now that we’re in California, I love to walk on the beach. I also love reading, cooking, and trying new foods.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Let’s see: I’m a closet dork. I walk into things. I have zero sense of direction. I’m addicted to chocolate. I think Rachel covered everything else.

Your Every Day To Do List

Everyday you're overwhelmed. Everyday your to do list is at least three pages, and by the end of the day, it's only grown. Everyday you have too much you need to accomplish. Everyday you feel guilty about not accomplishing something, and something else, and, oh yeah, that other thing.

Today, make this your to do list. Enjoy it. And have a great day. Let me know if it makes a difference. It sure made my days a bit brighter. (:

9 Steps to Check Off BEFORE Publishing a Blog Post

When you are about to publish a blog post, there are a few things you should always check for to make sure your post is top-quality for your readers. (I forget to check for all of these things a lot, so this post is quite helpful to me too!)

Pictures

Make sure to include at least one picture in your posts. This creates visual attraction and eye-engaging content. Think about yourself. On the internet, would you be more likely to read an article formatted as plain text or one where you first see a pretty picture that catches your attention?

Break up Paragraphs

On the internet, you want to read and understand the main points fast. Using bullet points, numbering, or even just splitting up paragraphs with spaces in between can be extremely helpful for getting your point across quickly to readers, and keeping them happy. Again, think about if it were you. Would you rather read 10 spaced-out tips on a topic, or a huge paragraph/essay of the same content?

Spelling

This one is obvious, but I still forget to do it all the time! So make sure you always run your post through the spell checker before posting.

Flow

It's helpful to read through the entire post and check for flow and sentence structure. Make your post sound interesting and conversational. Talk to your reader, as if you're having a conversation. This will make it easier to read while connecting directly with your reader.

Address Your Reader

You design your blog for multiple people. So it's easy to slip into the habit of addressing your audience as "people," "everyone," etc. But in order to connect and make an impact with your readers, you only should be talking to one person. Notice how in this particular post I am talking to YOU, not you and your mother, and brother, and grandmother, and best friend. This helps your reader apply what you are teaching directly to his or herself.

Labels/Tags/Key Words

In order to rank in search engines, which bring more traffic to you, you have to add labels, or tags, or key words (whatever you would like to call them) to your post. This helps the search engines know exactly what you are talking about and rank you appropriately. This is also beneficial to your readers if they choose to search for a certain topic on your blog. Sprinkle these words throughout your post a few times, not too much or else the search engines will think you're a robot, but just enough to show the importance. Synonyms are useful too.

Page Break

Your posts are most likely organized in order of published date on the homepage of your blog. If a new user looks at your blog for the first time to get an idea of what you write about, she will scroll through the homepage, skim the articles, and click on the ones she thinks are most important. You want to make sure you always include a page break so your entire post isn't showing up on the homepage. This will make it difficult for readers to see what's new and it will clog up your homepage. The page break also provides a nice hook to making readers interested enough to read the whole article.

Catchy Headline

What are you more likely to read, "7 Ways You Can Improve Your Writing Right Now" or "Improve Your Writing?" Creating a catchy headline will draw attention to you and your blog bringing you more readers, old and new. For excellent information on writing catchy headlines, PLEASE check out this series by Copyblogger, How to Write Magnetic Headlines.

Ask a Question

Invite your readers to interact with you. Be open for questions, comments, and thoughts. You're writing a conversation, so help your readers continue the conversation by asking something pertaining to your post. (See the next paragraph for an example!) And when your readers comment, respond back to them!

Follow this checklist BEFORE you press publish on any blog post, and you will be on your way to creating successful posts. I will be off to check this post, using my handy dandy checklist I just created, right now! Is there anything else you check for before posting? Let me know in the comments!

30 Minute Productivity

With the abundance of information available on the internet, Facebook, Twitter, Good Reads, blogs, You Tube, Linked In, books, webinars, television, email... it feels as if there's always something else you have to look at, have to learn. So you spend all day reading and watching and commenting and socializing, and then wonder where the day has gone.

Or you work diligently and hard all day on your writing. You finish a blog post, work on your novel, edit your short story, communicate with a potential client, complete necessary research, AND socialize. But your to-do list only seems to accumulate. You focus on what you HAVEN'T finished yet, and punish yourself for being unproductive.

Your brain is fried. You can't imagine having to sit down and work more. You're exhausted. So you go to bed feeling guilty of what you haven't accomplished. Closing your eyes, you try to feel the comfort of your pillow, allow yourself to rest, but your brain is screaming fragmented thoughts that you need to complete - Clean your room! Email this person! Schedule this appointment! Write the chapter!

This is bad. But it happens. We writers love our work so much that it's hard for us to separate our work and our lives, and end up working all the time, because it's fun, right?

The reality is, you'll never learn everything. You'll never accomplish everything in one day. You'll never have an empty to-do list. So don't try to be Wonder Woman all the time, because you'll burn out.

Often, I'll wake up with a colossal to-do list, and it's so overwhelming I don't even know where to begin. So I procrastinate and nothing is done. But I've learned that focusing on one particular project at a time is the way to accomplish multiple things at once. For the best productivity, you have to focus on each task exclusively.

Set a timer for 30 minutes and attack your task. Whatever you are stressing about the most right now, delegate this time to work on it. It doesn't have to be finished in this 30 minute period, you're just working. Turn off the internet, and your phone, and your email, and Twitter. This is super important so you don't see a notification pop up and become quickly and easily distracted. Close the door on the world and devote your entire conscious and unconscious to this particular task.

When your 30 minutes is up, review what you have completed, and feel proud that you have accomplished this little bit. Take a break. Eat a chocolate chip cookie. Make some coffee. And yes, you may check your internet activities. Reward yourself for what you've completed.

Then devote your time elsewhere for another 30 minutes. You can always come back to working on previous tasks later. As you progress, you may decide to change your time to an hour or two, but don't schedule big slots of time without understanding and appreciating your productivity first.

Kickstarter Project - Updates!

My Kickstarter Project is one week in, and I'm 10% of the way to my goal. This is good, and bad.

The Good - I'm 10% of the way there! It's awesome to see people caring and supporting me! I'm excited and optimistic and have met some great people on the way!

The Bad - This is a lot harder than I thought. And if the pledges don't pick up soon, I will fail.

I'm really excited for this, and I know this book has a lot of potential. This is a huge step, that is extremely difficult to climb. But I'm ready to share with the world. I'm trying my hardest to spread the word, but I've got to find something more.

Writing Prompt: Not JUST a Bug

Write from the perspective of a bug: ladybug, butterfly, spider, ant, bumblebee... bug of your choice. What are the daily hassles he/she has to deal with? What is his/her epic quest? What brings him/her the most joy?

This prompt is designed to get you writing in a unique perspective, rather than the typical first person human being we deal with every day. This also presents a challenge, because if you're anything like me, you'll shoo bugs away, smash them with the corner of your shoe, or run away in fear, depending on what bug it is. In order to write a successful story, we have to care about your main character, which in this instance, is a creature most people despise. How will you get us to love it?

Get creative and passionate about the little tiny insects we flick away with the whip of a hand, and write this story of a special bug, one who is more than JUST a bug, right now.

H is for Hello!

Hello! Hey! Hi! What's up! Guten Tag! Hallo! Hola! Aloha! Bonjour!

Hello everyone! I'm seeming to have new visitors and followers lately, so today is the day of welcoming you!

I would love to get to know you all a lot better. So I'm saying hello, introducing myself, and YOU better do the same.

I'm Rachel - I'm a writer, editor, author, aspiring novelist, and I'm seventeen. I like yoga and Diet Coke. I'm an avid reader. You may find the long version here.

Fun facts include - I have lived in the same house my whole entire life. I'm terrified of doctors and dentists. My favorite animals are cats, horses, giraffes, and dolphins. I like mismatched socks as long as they have a theme, such as a red sock with one cat and a black sock with multiple cats. I don't know where I'm going to college yet, and I have less than a month to decide. I really want to go to Mexico or Hawaii, right now.

My goals are - ambitious and crazy. But I love striving to reach places I've never been. I recently posted about my goals for the month but I also have this list of 101 goals I want to accomplish in 1001 days. This started March 1 of this year, and will end November 27, 2013. I know it's insane, but it's entertaining. And perhaps more attainable than just a new year's resolution. Ah, well, we'll see!

G is for Ghosts

G is for Ghosts

I'm a believer in the after life. I'm a believer in souls and spirits. I'm a believer in ghosts. Despite the fact that there is no scientific evidence to prove this, I still believe.

I'm a sucker for all the pictures that claim to have captured ghosts on camera. I even believe I've captured orbs on camera. Yeah, they were faint and I had to play with the coloring to see them, but they were there.

{Geez, I'm going through and trying to find the best picture for you and I'm finding stuff I hadn't even noticed before! Now I'm finding insane things in these pictures and I'm getting all worked up and excited...}

Observe. This is one is the easiest to see because the orbs are well rounded. It's also clear and not just smokey looking.

This picture was taken July 27, 2010 while on a ghost tour in Key West, Florida. The little blueish whitish circles are the orbs, which is a collection of energy. Basically a ghost in an small concentrated form instead of appearing physical. This happens if their energy isn't strong enough or they don't have a purpose to be in an apparant physical form.The only editing I did to this picture was brightening shadows because I didn't use a flash. Promise.

Okay, you got me. I'm a ghost-loving nerd. But I can't help it!

Do you believe?

Well if you believe the exist in reality or not, you have to agree that their element can make for a great story. This is what my current short story contest is about. Tell me about a ghost experience. It can be something that happened to you, or entirely fictional. It can be from the point of view of the ghost, or people interacting with the ghost, or becoming a ghost... Rules are just to include the ghostly element.

And for a special surprise, and perhaps a burst of inspiration. Here's a snippet from one of my favorite short stories that I've written.

This story is based off a ghost legend near where I live. I've attempted to see this ghost MULTIPLE times, and unfortunately I must conclude, it is only a myth.

But I'm obsessed with the idea of it. I get nervous butterflies every time I reach the location. I wait patiently and eagerly for the ghost to come. But he doesn't. Because he isn't real.

Anyways, the legend tells of a girl sneaking out to see her boyfriend. They aren't allowed to see each other for some reason so she must flash the lights of her car three times so the boyfriend knows it is safe to come over. He drives his motorcycle down the road to see her, but somehow dies. The ghost lingers because he was unable to reach her and he refuses to give up hope.

How did he die? That's where the myth gets quite twisted. Some say the girl's father got him and murdered him. Others say he just crashed his bike. I've also heard that he hit a little kid on a tricycle and they both died...

In my version, he just crashes.

In order to "see the motorcycle ghost," you must drive your car to the exact location which is on the corner of two roads in the middle of the country. Take the keys out of the ignition and flash your lights three times. Momentarily, a single headlight will be coming towards your car.

Yes, you do see a single headlight, sometimes.

No, it is not the ghost.

The road is extremely hilly and completely straight. For some reason, the way the road is paved causes normal car headlights to blend together and appear as one. This road is basically in the middle of no where, and appears to have infrequent traffic. But it is in fact highly trafficked, thus "the ghost light" comes towards you nearly every time.

Here's a piece of my interpretation if this story were to be real. This is from the perspective of Matthew, the boyfriend, as he is unknowingly living as a ghost.

The Light - Matthew

"The darkness. The heavy weight of the night pushes on my aching shoulders. The earth’s gravity pulls my weak and naïve body into its core. Death’s malevolent arms stretch greedily in attempt to latch around my torso and take me away to oblivion. But I refuse. I stand courageously, defiant. I wait patiently in the darkness.

I couldn’t bear Jenna’s voice on the phone, so desperate, so confused, so full of fear. Imagining those tears escaping from her restless eyes singed my heart. I needed to hold her fragile head into my chest. I needed to trace my fingers down her child-skinned back. I needed to hear her breath slow down into a relaxed state. I needed to calm her down. I had to promise her safety. I had to promise her pursuit of an understanding. I had to promise her it would be okay. How could I not?

You would have too.

As soon as she had hung up the phone I was outside. I stood on the magnificently broken road and I paced. No cars would come, that was for sure. I counted the click of my heels across the road to the lazy horse pasture; click clack two, click clack four. I counted the steps back to my tired ranch; ground one, air ground two. My mother and father were inside that pathetic withering house, watching a show on the television. Ever since we had gotten enough money to purchase one that was all they did. It was like a magic mirror for them, a glimpse into somebody else’s tragedy, an escape from our own. I only prayed optimistically for them. I wanted to give them a successful place, a real home. Yet there was nothing I could do right now. I couldn’t even support myself, let alone them. Their only son, only one of many disappointments. I continued to pace.

I wondered how many times I had crossed this black stoned river that mirrored the night sky. I looked at the minuscule specks of stone creating the stars. I considered counting them, but gave up due to the infinity that lay before my anxious eyes. I lied down in the middle with my limbs outstretched as if I was creating a snow angel in the concrete. Staring at the stars, I pondered the possibilities of my existence.

This night was similar to the night I had promised her forever.

The grass had been lush then, blanketing the backsides of our naked legs. Our eyes were displaced in the brilliant lights leading our gaze through a line of unbroken pictures. Nature was noisy, but I didn’t hear it. I was listening for a reason, a purpose, although I knew these constellations wouldn’t speak to me. I don’t know what I had expected to hear, perhaps nothing at all. I envisioned a light at the end of the tunnel embracing me, rattling me back and forth, explaining exactly what I was supposed to do to succeed.

“Do you ever imagine what’s out there?” I said, the words escaping from my lips unexpectedly. I remembered her laugh; it gravitated me to her.

“Where would you go?” I couldn’t resist the smile upon my face. I turned to look at her. Her thoughts were still with the sky. Her perfectly aligned structure emitted confidence paralleled with insecurity and confusion. Her red curls cushioned her young head like a pillow.

“The city. With its mountainous towers and its billions of beautiful people and its endless array of lights like false stars. It would be the perfect playground. It would be a release from this,” she said. ‘False stars’ rang in my ears. What about real stars? Like the ones she was observing? Wouldn’t it be better to be with those that are existent?

She asked the same question of me.

“There,” I said. An obvious answer, I suppose. She must have read my mind. I wanted her to understand the beauty of the unknown. The magic of being able to open one’s eyes for the very first time in a place of eternal survival.

I had tried to explain it to her, the best that I could. I’m not sure of how much she grasped and how much slipped away. I had promised her the city and concluded the necessity of our rest in the stars.

Things were different now. The air was nippy, crisp breaths rustling the lifeless leaves from their branches. The grass was moving towards hibernation. The sun lost a little bit of its bold brightness. The stars began to play hide and seek, hiding a little bit farther away, till they had disappeared, day by day. Colors no longer existed, but had instead faded to repulsive shades of grey. It was a world of sorrow blanketed by death’s breath.

Suddenly my head jerked up in alertness. A light broke the black fog. Another flash. Then once more.

It was time.

I skipped to my yard and revved my motorcycle to life. I took off without a second glance back. Moving faster and faster, the wind the bike was creating was the only thing preventing me from being at her side. I could beat it. I could fight it. I would be there. I would hold her, and tell her everything would be okay. It would all be okay.

I could see the car. I could barely see the figure of her shadow sitting in the front seat. It consumed me. It propelled me forward. Giving me an extra boost of rocket powered fuel on my dinky bike.

My headlight went out. I was surrounded by the darkness again. In confusion, I slowed slightly, but didn’t stop. The bike stopped by itself. My eyebrows drew together in a downwards anger. I shook the motorcycle vigorously. I took the key out and put it back in. I revved the engine. It was deceased. I threw it on the ground with a shattering bang and began to walk. I wouldn’t let my stupid motorcycle stop me.

But my feet morphed into fifty pound weights, sinking into the road. I dragged on, blaming my imagination for draining the passing time. But they persisted, growing heavier, like I was pulling through a swamp of syrup. I rejected the idea of stopping without a rational thought. But the swamp had cultivated roots that lassoed my legs, and pulled me to my knees. It numbed me slowly as it consumed my body, centimeter by centimeter. Till my eyes blinked faint. I saw the motionless car coming to life, but I was burnt deeply by the sultry waters of the swamp. The trees started dissolving. The leaves and branches diminished to dust. The sky sweat smoke. The houses crumbled with a hiss. The whole world before me was disintegrating into ash.

Her voice.

“Matthew!”

She was with me. She was here. I surrendered myself to her feeling confidently safe in her arms.

I was in front of my house. Perhaps I had been day dreaming. I must have envisioned this distraught nightmare. How much time had passed? I knew it didn’t really matter; time was inconsequential when it had anything to do with her. The stars still sparkled in the sky. My mind must have only merely drifted. Jenna would flash the lights soon, three times, and then I would come. My bike wouldn’t break down, how ridiculous. I would see my beloved. I would reach her just fine. All would be well. I promised her everything was going to be okay.

The lights flashed again, and I went to my bike.

Everything would be okay. I had promised."

F is for Flowers

The dull monotone of winter is beginning to fade into spring brightness. The colors are pale and innocent now, but I wait patiently for the green buds to explode into majestic colors. I long for the creamy white petals to pop from the trees. Daffodils are already springing up from their slumber. The sun is growing warmer. I realize how much I missed the feeling of tickling my bare feet in soft grass hairs. The clash of clouds signals an approaching thunderstorm. I can't get enough of the smell of rain, the breeze caressing my cheek. Bunnies frolic across my driveway. I've seen a single bumble bee, and surprisingly, I like him. {I've also seen a spider, but I REALLY don't like him.}

And waking up to the birds' melody brings me warmth and pure joy.

Every year the magical transformation of growth is reborn. Spring is a gentle awakening, bringing the world back to life. Everything is fresh and new. I feel the growth within myself; the new beginnings starting to emerge. This will be good. Everyday is the new first day of my whole entire life.

I'm anxious for the summer. I'm impatient to start my life. I'm exhausted from strenuous work. I'm anticipating the release. I'm done with the pressure. I'm finished with the early callings of school work. I'm ready to be free. I need the flowers to blossom. Right now.

But flowers take their time. They simmer slowly, taking the proper amount of time to grow before they're ready to embrace the world. The hard work of preparing to live is long and requires patience. But they know as soon as they release, it will be glorious.

Slowly the flowers will blossom into beauty. Slowly I will find my fresh freedom. I have to find my patience. Enjoy the blessings of now, and imagine the wonder of what's to come.

Everyday is the first day of my whole entire life. I'll take on today and today only. Tomorrow is just a day away, another brand new first day.

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a website designed so individuals can fundraise for their creative projects. A person with a specific goal in mind can create a project and list a given amount of money needed to complete that project. Then it's up to backers to pledge how much money they would like to spend to help fund this project. But it's not just asking people to give and give because they feel like it. Rewards are given with specific prices as assigned by the creator. If the project is successfully funded - as in the funds goal reached or surpassed - then the money is paid and rewards are given accordingly. If the goal is not successfully funded, no money is paid and no rewards are given out. So you either reach your goal, get the money, and complete your project, or you don't reach your goal, don't get any money, and hope for a different avenue to find funds for the project.

What is your Kickstarter project?
I'm striving to raise $2,000 to self-publish many copies of my book, The Wonder of Writing, its correlating workbook, and turn it into an e-Book so it can reach a wide audience as quick as possible. I'm looking for backers to pledge and help me turn my dreams into a reality.

What do you mean, pledge?
By backing a project and pledging that you will pay a certain amount of money if the project is successfully funded, you are not charged at the time. You are only charged if and when the project is funded.

How much do I have to pay?
The choice to back a project is entirely up to you. Minimum donation for my project is only one dollar. The rewards start at five dollars.

What do I get out of this?
Well for starters, you are helping a young aspiring author encourage writing and publishing within other authors by publishing these books. You will feel the warm goodness in your heart of being a great person and supporting a valuable and unique production.

Depending on your level of pledge, you will receive a certain reward as well.

For a $5 pledge, you will receive a handwritten postcard with the cover of the book on one side.
For a $35 pledge, you will receive both the book and the workbook.
For a $100 pledge, you will receive a consultation about your work-in-progress, signed copy of LIMITED EDITION book which is only available through this project, the workbook, and the e-book.
For a $1,500 pledge, you will receive the Gold Level of Supporting Young Authors Award. Your name published in the preface of the limited edition book with your level of support. Limited edition will include an exclusive section devoted to creating the plan for marketing your book. A consultation, general review, and full edit of your work-in-progress. Signed copies of the books and workbook, the e-book. And an exclusive one-on-one creative planning and workshop in your area for your school class or writing group. (What an offer! E is for Eminem

E is for Eminem

So, I was toying with so many ideas for today's "E" post. E is such an Easy letter! But I decided on Eminem because I've been meaning to mention these thoughts for some time now - and hopefully my post will be different than everybody else's!

Eminem is a genius. Music and literary industry. End of discussion.

And I'm not the only one who thinks this! Check out The Eminem Guide to Becoming a Writing and Marketing Machine to see how he can help you with your writing! Can't beat that.

Aside from being a music phenomenon, he is also well versed in the literary realm. Take apart any of his songs and you'll see what I mean. His words are delicately phrased to compose lyrical rhymes. They elicit an emotional response within listeners allowing them to feel such strong energy from him. He's powerful, relatable, amazing.

This isn't to say that he doesn't curse excessively or reference dark situations. Yet, his tone and message behind it are what makes it successful. He has such a strong and definite personality that it carries through beautifully. He is able to help people understand these sorrows through three minute songs.

One thing that gives listeners comfort and understanding is the stories his lyrics create. Eminem tells stories of loss, loss and growth. His brutal honesty is what may frighten potential listeners away, but the harsh reality that his words and correlating emotions display is what makes him so strong.

Rapping about having the most expensive car on the block or being decorated in diamonds has become cliched in the industry. Eminem hasn't bragged about these things, even though he could. He raps about life. And that's how it should be. That's what I love.

As a writer, you can learn much from him. By using his practices of honesty, clarity, and specific wording, your pieces will become much tighter and much more powerful. The biggest lesson to be taken from Eminem is to make every word count in a short amount of time.

Another quick fact of the day about Eminem: His name is practically the only rapper's name that makes any sense. If you sound "Eminem" out, it's "M n M." But this isn't referencing the candy. Eminem's real name is Marshall Mathers, m [and] m. It's his initials spelled in a unique way. How creative is that? I would have never guessed...

And a special surprise:

I am NOT at all a poet. I never have been, and I doubt I ever will be. I like stories. But it's National Poetry Month and what not, so I think I shall be a little spirited and share a poem with you.

For my creative writing class a few months ago, we had to write a few poems. The prompt of one of them was to take a character, real or imaginary, and write a poem from their perspective. I chose Eminem, because I am so very fond of him.

I included lyrics from three of his songs, "Beautiful," "Superman," and "No Love," and interweaved them with my own words of how he could potentially feel. I believe Eminem strives to be a real person with an honest attitude rather than a "know-it-all."

Disclaimer: This may or may not be how Eminem feels. This is my ATTEMPT at poetry. I know it's not great, I'm not claiming it is.

Here it goes:

Eminem

“I’m alive again,

More alive than I have been in

my whole entire life

I can

See these people’s ears perk up

As I begin”

They look up to me

And what do they see?

A hope of guidance

An idol

But I’m not liable

I’m “just plain old Marshall”

I’ve been walkin’ through the gates of

hell

Locked in my own mental cell

Wonderin’ if this song will even sell

But I’m really just a person

I don’t know why you think that

“I’m here to rescue you,”

Cause that ain’t true

Everybody’s gotta have their own life plan

D is for Dare to Draft

You might classify me as a perfectionist when trying to write my novel, which sounds potentially good, as then the story would turn out amazing! But put bluntly, it's not.

Sometimes I feel fearful of starting that first draft. I become become afraid of imperfection. I am terrified of finishing, feeling successful, but hating my story. Or maybe I adore it, but it others don't think it has the potential that I see in it. This has happened. And this will continue to happen.

And that's okay. A draft is a draft. It's meant for mess-ups and terrible writing peppered with cliches. It's supposed to have plot holes and way too many adverbs. Anne Lamott calls it in her book Bird by Bird, a "shitty first draft." You need the "shit" because without it you'll never be able to find it's true beauty.

My whole life, up until about age fourteen, I pictured perfection. I would have the best first kiss with the boy who I would spend the rest of my life with. Our lips would grace each other under the street light in the pouring rain. My first job would provide me endless amounts of money that I'd be swimming in it. My sweet sixteen would host a party worthy of MTV's show. I would have an extravagant wedding and then pop out two little kids like it was nothing, a boy first and then a girl of course. I would die of old age, peacefully in my sleep.

This is nice to dream, but it's not how the world works. When I hit high school, I was in for a harsh reality.

At first I was devastated. I hated wallowing in my room, drowning in tears like the world was ending. This earth was a cruel place in my eyes. You know those hormonal teenage years... Nothing of a fairy tale like it should be.

Yet, if life were a fairy tale, it wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Without all the terrible events and lessons that I had to experience, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I wouldn't have the experiences that allowed me to learn and grow. I wouldn't be adventurous or experimental. I wouldn't be open. I wouldn't understand the world like I do, right now.

I'm grateful for all the negativity, heartbreaks, back-stabbing friends, mess-ups, and idealized cliches because they helped me find the true beauty.

This life lesson is essential to your stories. You have to accept everything bad in order to find the good. Without the "shit," your story will never grow and find its magic.

So Dare to Draft. Welcome all the terrible things that could happen in your writing and suppress your inner critic until it's time to revise. Get out all the negativity now so you are able to find what you want underneath, the beauty, the magic, the wonder. Write that "shitty first draft" and eliminate all fear.

Once you Dare to Draft, you will find happiness. And perhaps your fairy tale will come true.

C is for Character Confessions

C is for Character Confession

One of the most important aspects of a successful story is a strong character that readers adore. Think about your favorite characters in books. They're heroic, relatable, and full of life. Readers love these characters because they come alive on the page and live their OWN life in their OWN world.

When writing a novel, and even when writing a story, you have to allow your characters to live on their own. They have to be lovable and relatable. And even the villains must provoke that love-to-hate feeling within readers.

One of the best techniques to bring your characters to life is to get them to confess.

If you treat your characters like they exist without the necessity of your fingertips and imagination, it will be easier for them to live on their own. If you confront them, they'll be willing to spill their innermost thoughts, secrets, pains, and desires.

So try confronting your characters? Start out small, asking simple, easy questions such as, "Tell me about yourself," just to establish the comfort zone. Then move forward to asking stronger points, such as "What is your biggest fear?" and "What do you want the most?" Don't restrict the answers you receive, as you can always include/ignore the points that you choose. But during this exercise, use open and free communication to get your characters to reveal the most information possible in the time that you are given.
