“Open Door,” which has amassed nearly 15 million views on social media so far, documents the elevator ride from hell that two people share.

“I literally can’t go a day without someone asking me what our characters saw down there,” Cate said in a statement shared by Variety. “And I really, really can’t wait to show everyone — and give some hints along the way … We are ride or die with our original cast and crew who made this all happen.”

“And we’ve written some of the most incredible roles to make this a next-level project,” Cate added. “Right now, it’s just a matter of showing the demand and finding our village.”

Sharing news of the feature adaptation himself on social media Friday, Cate said, “Only in my wildest dreams.”

The short is also available for streaming on its official site. The website notes the feature does not yet have a release date, but could be released as soon as 2027.

The movie will come after the success of “Backrooms” and “Obsession,” which were both hatched from popular YouTube videos. “Backrooms” director Kane Parsons has since become the youngest director to top the box office and “Obsession” has become the highest-grossing movie acquired out of a film festival.

If Cate’s name sounds familiar, it might be because he previously worked as a Democratic consultant and campaign spokesperson for then-candidate Barack Obama in 2008. His father is WFLA anchor Keith Cate.

Here are the three best movies to watch on HBO Max this weekend.

“Midsommar”

In 2018, Ari Aster made his feature directorial debut with “Hereditary,” a movie destined to become one of the most influential horror movies of the decade. The impact of Aster’s brand of horror filmmaking can be felt across the horror genre, with Curry Barker citing the writer/director as an inspiration point for “Obsession.”

A year later, Aster would follow “Hereditary” with “Midsommar,” a similarly bold and assured horror feature that further solidified him as a definitive voice in the space (despite not making a straight-up horror movie since). It also cemented Florence Pugh as a capital-M movie star, showing her acting chops in full force in one of the decade’s strongest horror performances.

“The Rock”

Michael Bay has had a pretty rocky career as a filmmaker, alternating between all-timer action movies and flicks so bad that they’re best left forgotten. Watching movies like “The Rock,” however, make it undeniable that this action director can indeed have the juice.

The film stars Nicolas Cage as an FBI chemical weapons expert who works with works with an imprisoned MI6 agent (Sean Connery) to break into Alcatraz and foil a plot by a group of Force Recon Marines (led by Ed Harris). It’s goofy, it’s intense and it’s an unbelievably fun ride.

“Zola”

Do you want to see another movie based on internet posts like “Backrooms”? Did “I Love Boosters” make you yearn for more Taylour Paige? Have “Euphoria” and “Disclosure Day” gotten you in a Colman Domingo mood? Then Janicza Bravo’s “Zola” has you covered.

Bravo wrote the film alongside Jeremy O. Harris, adapting a lengthy thread of 148 Tweets from A’Ziah “Zola” King (played by Paige in the film) and a resulting Rolling Stone article by David Kushner. “Zola” follows the wild true story of the titular part-time stripper’s whirlwind friendship and subsequent falling out with Stefani (Riley Keough).

“Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this b—h fell out?” Zola asks. “It’s kind of long but full of suspense.”

That it was.

The state’s governor Greg Abbott told attendees to be prepared for something “larger than life” soon after his Friday speech. Paige, who was wearing a campaign-themed banner reading “Unity Drives Victory,” was escorted into the venue, where she took a moment to relieve herself near the press seating.

‘They just led an elephant through the @TexasGOP convention and it took a giant pee right near the press area,” wrote New York Times reporter Lauren McGaughy on X.

“Welcome Paige! Thanks for stopping by the State Convention! What a treat for our delegates and guests – it’s one they won’t ever forget!” the Texas GOP wrote on the same platform.

The video sparked concern from many who are worried about the conditions Paige was subjected to. “Poor Elephant. They should be free!” wrote one person in response to the GOP’s post.

“JFC, Animal Cruelty by POS humans. I hope they ALL lose,” wrote a second.

Per the Guardian, Paige joined the event at the courtesy of the East Texas Elephant Experience, an organization that has been repeatedly criticized by the The Animal Rights Coalition. The organization has also called on the East Texas Elephant Experience to release Paige and two other elephants, Jeanie and Krissy, to a sanctuary.

“Jeanie, Krissy, and Paige, the elephants exploited by Trunks and Humps (also known as East Texas Elephant Experience), are forced to travel from event to event for brief moments of human ‘entertainment,'” reads a page on their website. “These magnificent animals deserve so much more. They deserve to live in a true sanctuary, free from exploitation and the constant threat of harm.”

As always, the streamers each got a new batch of movies and TV at the start of the month, and Paramount+ got some pretty good ones. So, we’ve picked out some of the better ones on the list to help you narrow down your choice, ranging from dark comedy to a western and more.

Here are 7 of the best new movies on Paramount+ in June.

Death Becomes Her

An argument can certainly be made that “Death Becomes Her” is more of a Halloween time film, but I would argue that there’s never a bad time to watch it. Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep are simply too good together.

The actresses star as longtime frenemies, who also happen to be actresses. Madeline (Streep) steals Helen’s (Hawn) fiancé Ernest (Bruce Willis), leading to a complete breakdown for Helen, and a vow to get revenge. Years later, they meet again, with Helen looking younger than ever. As it turns out, she took a magic elixir that gives her eternal youth — and Madeline quickly gets her hands on it too.

As with any potion like this, there are side effects, and what follows is a film full of both comedy and body horror (but in a palatable way, promise). It’s really just delightful, and lets Streep and Hawn go full tilt, which they are oh so good at.

True Grit

If you’re looking for something grittier this month — pun only a little intended — go for “True Grit.” It features a baby Hailee Steinfeld (the performance made her one of the youngest Oscar nominees ever, and it’s her film debut!), a grown Jeff Bridges, and the Coen brothers before they went onto solo projects.

The movie centers on 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Steinfeld), who seeks out Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) to go after the outlaw who murdered her father. She’s a determined and precocious girl, hellbent on seeing her father’s killer brought to justice (read: hung) and will not take no for an answer.

The movie has become a favorite of many over the years, and it’s easy to see why, considering the multiple stellar performances it brings out. It’s not precisely a feel-good film, but it is definitely a good film.

The Italian Job

Sometimes, you just need to kick back with an early 2000s remake of a 1960s film, starring a young Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham and more. And that’s just three people out of a stacked cast.

“The Italian Job” features an insanely stacked cast, for a somewhat insanely convoluted heist movie. It’s not convoluted in the sense of being hard to follow — in fact, this is one where you can mostly just turn your brain off and enjoy — but more so in the sense of being meticulously planned. So maybe convoluted is the wrong word, but you get it.

Together, Wahlberg, Theron, Statham and their team go up against Edward Norton, after he betrays them on a job in Italy (you get the title now, yes?) and steals millions of dollars in gold bricks.

It’s a true ensemble film, and always a fun watch.

Eagle Eye

It’s fun seeing what we thought surveillance would like in 2008, and how close to correct “Eagle Eye” ended up being.

It stars Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan as two ordinary people who are forced to go on the run, after they both receive a call from an unknown woman who forces them to complete various tasks or risk harm to themselves and their loved ones.

The thing is, it’s not actually a woman. It’s an AI program, and it’s tracking their every move. After the program’s recommendation on a military operation went ignored and led to casualties, it decided that the current executive branch needed to be wiped out.

“Eagle Eye” isn’t a perfect movie, but it’s a pretty decent thriller that might feel even more possible today, unfortunately.

21 Jump Street

“We Jump Street. And about to jump in yo ass.”

Technically, that line is from “22 Jump Street,” which also conveniently hit Paramount+ this month, but it’s just funny every time. So consider this an interchangeable recommendation — we’re going to list “21 Jump Street” first though, since you need it to watch the second one.

Starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, “21 Jump Street” was also a remake, and a pretty great one at that. The actors star as two bumbling cops, who get to go undercover at a local high school to bust a new drug ring. Obviously, they don’t look like high schoolers, and they’re called on it immediately.

The duo is comedy gold, and you’ll probably find you forgot that a lot of famous faces are in this movie. Plus, with a “24 Jump Street” in the works, you’ll want to make sure you’re fresh on this franchise.

Uncle Buck

“Uncle Buck” remains one of John Candy’s best performances, and one that he is beloved for.

In fact, as recently as a few months ago, his co-star Macaulay Culkin recalled his great experiences working with the man for Colin Hanks’ new documentary, “John Candy: I Like Me.” According to Culkin, Candy always had a “paternal” presence on set and made sure to look out for him, which made the job one of his favorites. 

In “Uncle Buck,” Candy plays a Chicago bachelor who’s forced to watch his brother’s three kids when a family emergency cropped up. He quickly bonds with them, and the relationships are all incredibly sweet. It’s just a feel-good comedy.

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius

He’s got a super-powered mind and a mechanical canine. What more could you need?

I have to toss this one in simply for nostalgia value. Classic Nickelodeon shows and movies remain beloved, but Jimmy Neutron arguably flies under the radar and shouldn’t. It’s fun and chaotic, and deserves a rewatch. There’s not much more to say on this one.

On Netflix, the first-ever fully stop-motion animated Mexican film has made its streaming premiere, while the fifth season of one fan-favorite romantic drama has also arrived on the platform. Elsewhere, Hulu has unveiled the entire first season of a new British “wrong-com” and Amazon’s Prime Video has debuted the freshman season of a new, YA romance that should satisfy fans of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and “Off Campus.”

Here are the eight best new movies and shows you can stream this weekend.

“Alice and Steve” Season 1 (Hulu)

“Alice and Steve” helped kick off this week’s streaming premieres. Created by former “Sex Education” staff writer Sophie Goodhart, this “wrong-com” follows a pair of lifelong friends (Jemaine Clement and Nicola Walker) whose friendship is tested when Clement’s Steve begins dating the daughter of Walker’s Alice. The series’ entire six-episode first season debuted all at once Monday on Hulu.

“Every Year After” Season 1 (Prime Video)

While “Alice and Steve” promises to deliver the same kind of comedic, messy rom-com thrills as shows like “Sex Education,” Prime Video’s “Every Year After” is positioned to drive in the same angsty YA romance lane as other hit shows like “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”

Based on author Carley Fortune’s best-selling novel “Every Summer After,” the new series spans the course of six years and one week in a small lake town and follows its leads (Sadie Soverall’s Percy and Matt Cornett’s Sam) as their lives are shaped by first loves and important choices. Its complete, eight-episode first season premiered binge-style Wednesday on Prime Video.

“Surviving Earth” (Peacock)

NBC and Peacock have a treat in store this week for nature documentary fans. “Surviving Earth,” a new eight-part docuseries about the Earth’s anthropological history, premiered its first episode Thursday night on NBC. It became available to stream Friday on Peacock.

The show’s remaining seven installments will follow one at a time every week, first premiering Thursday nights on NBC and the next day on Peacock. Using cutting-edge CGI animation, “Surviving Earth” shows viewers how intelligent life once existed on Earth millions of years ago.

“Sweet Magnolias” Season 5 (Netflix)

“Every Year After” is not the only noteworthy romantic drama premiering on streaming this week. On Thursday, Netflix also unveiled the entire 10-episode fifth season of beloved original series “Sweet Magnolias.” At this point in its run, you likely know whether or not the South Carolina-set show is up your alley or not. If it is, then the series’ latest episodes, its first since Feb. 2025, likely deserve a place on your weekend watchlist this week.

“I Am Frankelda” (Netflix)

“I Am Frankelda,” one of this year’s most intriguing new animated films, made its streaming debut Friday on Netflix.

The Mexican stop-motion dark musical fantasy film from directors Arturo and Roy Ambriz follows a determined 19th-century Mexican writer as she journeys into her own subconscious to finally face down the monsters she has written so extensively about. The film has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews up to this point, and its distinct, fantastical visuals and story may make it exactly what you are looking for this weekend.

“They Will Kill You” (HBO Max)

If you want a film that is considerably darker and more violent than “I Am Frankelda” to watch this weekend, look no further than “They Will Kill You.” This action-filled horror comedy from director Kirill Sokolov hit theaters earlier this year but has now made its streaming debut this week on HBO Max.

A horror comedy in the same vein as films like “Ready or Not,” the movie follows an ex-convict (Zazie Beetz) whose response to a job listing for a housekeeper at a New York City high-rise ends up putting her at the center of a desperate fight for her life against the building’s cult leaders.

“The Listeners” (Starz)

Nearly two years after it aired in the U.K., “The Listeners” is finally set to premiere in the United States. A four-episode limited series adaptation of author Jordan Tannahill’s 2021 novel of the same name, “The Listeners” stars Rebecca Hall as a teacher who finds herself suddenly tormented by a humming noise that seemingly only a few other people are able to hear. The series received largely positive reviews when it aired in the U.K., and its first episode is slated to premiere Friday on Starz (both the channel and the app).

“My Adventures with Superman” Season 3 (HBO Max)

It has been nearly two full years since the second season of “My Adventures with Superman” ended. Fortunately, the animated superhero series’ hiatus is, at long last, nearly at an end. A playful, romantic coming-of-age twist on the typical Superman story, this animated gem quickly won over comic book fans’ hearts when it initially premiered back in 2023.

Now, the series’ third season is set to follow its central, found family as they are forced to confront new enemies that both threaten their shared future and test their bonds with each other. Its first episode premieres Saturday night on Adult Swim and becomes available to stream the next day on HBO Max.

Per Vanity Fair, the bulk of the sources the outlet spoke to are in their early 20s, and working for Unwell, home of Cooper’s popular “Call Her Daddy” podcast, is their first job (or one of their earliest).

“These are people who grew up on ‘Call Her Daddy’ and for whom Cooper is not just a boss but a celebrity — she’s the reason many of them applied in the first place,” the article, published Friday, states.

But these days, most of the decisions at Unwell are made by Cooper’s husband, and his “volatile mix of unprofessional and caustic” style of leadership appears to be in direct opposition to the brand’s emphasis on supporting women.

Some of the women told Vanity Fair that Kaplan called some employees “stupid” or “retarded,” and he’s also accused of threatening to negatively impact their careers. Plenty were also worried the interviewer was some kind of plant by Kaplan and Cooper and meant to identify detractors.

Other employees also pointed to uncomfortable interactions with chief brand officer T.J. Marchetti, the former Disney and Awesomeness TV executive who is one of a small number of men who work at Unwell.

“Several describe feeling uncomfortable with how flirty he was with the young female fans who came to Unwell events. Another still recalls Marchetti telling her to take down photos from Unwell’s Instagram account of young fans who, she recalls him saying, ‘were not attractive enough.'”

“[Kaplan] creates the most toxic work environment that I’ve ever seen,” said one former freelancer. A former employee also said, “Matt will scream the worst things and say the nastiest things to you, and Alex will be there next to him, not defending anyone.”

As another put it, despite the female-forward public-facing perception of the company, “what I found is, behind the scenes, there’s this man, her husband, running around wreaking havoc and making people cry, cower [in] fear.”

Unwell did not immediately respond Saturday to a request for comment.

Cooper is currently pregnant with the pair’s first child, a move that was side-eyed by her former boss Dave Portnoy. “Alex Cooper pregnant!” he said in a video shared on TikTok. “What a trump card. Because you are off-limits. Once you’re pregnant, all the haters gotta zip it.” (It’s worth noting Portnoy is not without his own controversy, and his professional relationship with Cooper ended in 2021 when she left Barstool.)

The civil lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and a jury trial, according to People. Banks alleges that producers used only 16 minutes from a three-and-a-half-hour interview, and omitted key responses to construct a “false and defamatory narrative.”

“Tyra Banks participated in the Netflix documentary series America’s Next Top Model (‘ANTM’) because she believed viewers deserved a candid conversation about the show’s legacy — its successes and its shortcomings,” the lawsuit states. It adds that Banks wanted viewers to hear directly about “aspects of the show for which Ms. Banks takes accountability.”

The suit argues that Netflix marketed the project as a documentary and therefore created for expectation for an accurate account of events. Banks alleges producers selectively edited her interview and removed statements in which she acknowledged criticism of the long-running reality competition series.

According to the lawsuit, footage was “stripped of context and reassembled to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed.”

A central claim involves the documentary’s discussion of former contestant Shandi Sullivan, who has said she believes she was sexually assaulted while filming the show’s second season. Banks alleges the series implied that she knowingly allowed the assault to occur, exploited the contestant’s trauma for ratings and later failed to remember the incident.

The complaint specifically challenges a sequence in which Banks appears unable to recall Sullivan’s story. According to the lawsuit, unaired footage shows that Banks nodded and said, “I do remember her story,” but those portions were removed.

Banks also disputes the documentary’s treatment of allegations that she callously failed to support former judge J. Alexander, known as Miss J, after he suffered a stroke in 2022. The lawsuit alleges producers never informed Banks that Alexander would claim she had not visited him; had she been given the opportunity, she would have presented text messages and other communications showing efforts to contact him while she was living in Australia.

The suit further alleges that Banks previously acted swiftly after learning of alleged inappropriate conduct by a “Top Model” cast member. According to the complaint, she reported the matter to executives, escalated it to the network and helped ensure sexual-harassment training was conducted for cast and crew.

Banks alleges the documentary caused reputational damage, emotional distress and lost business opportunities. Netflix had not publicly responded to the lawsuit as of Saturday.

“Sophie, as a character, gets to be unraveled little bit by little bit in Season 1, and then in Season 2 … the sweater is unraveled, the whole thing is a big old mess,” Snow said during “The Hunting Wives” FYC panel in Los Angeles on Wednesday. “I just loved getting to play a character that was kind of vacillating with who she should be and who she is and the danger of that, and in Season 2 it was even more danger to play.”

As Snow returned alongside Malin Åkerman to the set of the Lionsgate TV-produced show, Snow recalled the ease they felt after nailing the tone in Season 1 and understanding where the sophomore installment would take them. “We were so embedded with each other and the relationships, so it was sort of easy. Just felt like no pressure,” Snow said.

“The characters were more lived [in], and we understood these characters on a deeper level after the first season,” Åkerman added. That ease extended through to Åkerman’s accent, with the actress recalling “Sweden to East Texas is a big jump.”

“The first season it was weeks of just second guessing myself, and then second season I was like, ‘Just give it my best shot, here we go,’ so it just kind of loosened everything a little bit,” Åkerman said.

To EP Erwin Stoff, the shift on set was palpable. “There’s nothing like doing a character and giving a performance, which is the beauty of television, once you already have been bathed in the love by the audience, as the show had been, and that’s just the truth,” he said.

“There was just there was a additional swagger to the performances. There was just an ease to the whole thing,” Stoff said. “[It] genuinely felt like … they could just do no wrong — they could pick up any line … could be given any scene or any line, but they would just do it.”

Stemming from Stoff’s leadership, Åkerman applauded the collaborative and largely female-led cast and crew on “The Hunting Wives” for creating a supportive environment, which was crucial given the show’s volume of intimacy scenes, saying “it just felt like we could trust fall all the time, and that’s really wonderful when you are being as vulnerable as we are in this show.”

It’s a welcome environment for Åkerman, who, during the panel, revealed she had participated in project at the start of her career that put her on the spot to do nudity without a waiver. “They pulled me aside and said, ‘Oh my gosh, so sorry, we forgot to have you sign a nudity waiver, but you’re cool with everything, right?’ and I was young, and I was like, ‘I’m cool with everything,'” Åkerman said, recalling she didn’t want to lose the job.

“I was a lot younger, I would never let that happen nowadays, because I’m a woman, and I’ve grown up and learned my lessons, but there is a difference,” Åkerman said. “I think that’s more generally just in our business, as we’ve come around to things that are appropriate or not appropriate.”

The set of “The Hunting Wives” is vastly different, with the cast and crew applauding their intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot, who has serves as an intimacy coordinator on “Bridgerton,” “Babygirl” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” to name a few.

“The importance of a good intimacy coordinator cannot be overstated,” showrunner Rebecca Cutter said. “They’re not the fun police, they’re trying to make it look better and sexier and feel realer at the same time keeping everyone safe … it can be fun and collaborative, just like any other scene, and they’re like a stunt coordinator, they’re bringing great ideas about how to make the show look better.”

“The Hunting Wives” Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.

For comparison, that’s a few steps above the $41 million opening for Spielberg’s 2018 blockbuster “Ready Player One,” making it the famed director’s best opening weekend since “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2008.

Still, with a reported $115 million production budget before marketing costs, “Disclosure Day” has some work to do to turn a theatrical profit. Reception for the film has been generally positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 80% critics and 74% audience to go with a B on CinemaScore. But compared to Spielberg’s wide releases in the 2010s, these scores are below his track record as “Disclosure Day” marks the first time he has received a CinemaScore grade below A- since “Crystal Skull.”

Elsewhere on the charts, Focus Features’ “Obsession” is now starting to see larger weekend-to-weekend drops, but it is still posting totals above its opening weekend with an astounding fifth weekend total of $21 million.

In the coming week, “Obsession” will become just the fifth horror film to gross $200 million domestic before inflation adjustment and join Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” as only the second original film since “Coco” in November 2017 to cross that mark.

The box office news is not as good for last weekend’s releases, Paramount/Miramax’s “Scary Movie” and Amazon MGM’s “Masters of the Universe,” both of which fell at least 70% from their opening weekends as “Scary Movie” earned $15.6 million in its second weekend while “Masters” falls to a dismal $8.8 million.

Paramount and Miramax can shrug off this frontloaded run for “Scary Movie,” as the film has a production budget of just $30 million against an estimated 10-day domestic total of approximately $85 million. But it’s very bad news for the $170 million-plus “Masters of the Universe,” which stands to have a 10-day domestic total of $46 million as its fate as a summer bomb is sealed.

Farther down the charts, Lionsgate/Universal’s “Michael” is now the highest grossing music biopic of all time as it is set to add $4.6 million in its eighth weekend while earning a $2 million opening day in Japan. With more than $920 million worldwide, Antoine Fuqua’s biopic has passed “Bohemian Rhapsody” worldwide and is still on course to pass “Oppenheimer” for the all-time biopic record.

Lionsgate has also released the R-rated Hong Kong action film “The Furious” in 1,251 locations, where it is set to earn $2.9 million this weekend. Starring Xie Miao and Joe Taslim as two men who set out to take down a child trafficking ring in Hong Kong’s underworld, the bloody martial arts film has received critical acclaim with an A on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 98% critics and 95% audience.

Also opening in targeted release is the drag queen disaster comedy “Stop! That! Train!,” which has rolled out to 1,161 locations courtesy of Bleecker Street and is on pace for a $2.3 million opening. It has RT scores of 84% critics and 83% audience.

Lalas attempted to clarify his meaning, noting, “When he’s all dressed up and ready to go?” However, his peers were forced to explain that a “wanker” in British slang is not a nice descriptor.

“Lucky we’re on American television,” Lowe responded. “‘Cause the W-word on British TV …”

A representative for Corden did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

For those wondering, a “full kit wanker” is a British insult about a person dressed in a soccer get-up in public, despite not playing the sport. Lalas’ swipe at Corden wasn’t entirely wrong, however, as the “Cats” star did don a soccer uniform for his new Fox Sports project. Though, we assume Corden still didn’t appreciate the comment.

Nonetheless, World Cup fans had plenty to say about the moment, with one fan on X commenting alongside a photo of Henry’s shocked face, “The next meme of the World Cup.” Another chimed in with, “So much respect for Alexi Lalas after this.”
