Ban on terrace heaters

A worker at the Juliana Kinderziekenhuis childrens hospital, who was thought to have had open tuberculosis, (TB) has tested negative for the disease. The fear was that the worker at the hospital might have infected patients, family members and other workers. Prinsjesdag 2011, an impression
Queen Beatrix's Golden Carriage traveled between The Hague's Paleis Nordeinde and the Ridderzaal without problems. Thousands of people gathered to watch along the sidewalks, often in orange clothes. Super Tram
HTM recently introduced a 80 meter long super-tram, made up of two Randstad Rail vehicles. A low-floor tram of this lenght is unique in the Netherlands. If the test runs successful, HTM plans to introduce more of these trams during it's busiest hours.

International Fireworks Festival in Scheveningen
Coming Friday and Saturday the 19th and 20th of August, numerous arrows and flares will be shot into the air from a floating pontoon 275 meters off-coast. Roses blooming at Westbroekpark
At the Westbroekpark at Scheveningen the 51rd international rozen concourse was held. Rose growers from all over the world competed to produce the perfect rose. Coming Sunday the Day of the Roses will be held. The rose garden is in full bloom for the public to see in July and August.

Hague's PVV wants beach cafes open all year
The PVV party has proposed to the municipal council that Scheveningen beach cafes be allowed to stay open all year round. The PVV believe that the cafe owners have been disadvantaged by the construction work on the Scheveningen boulevard reducing visitor numbers to the beach. The Municipal Executive of Aldermen and the Mayor have come up with a new vision for the exclusive residential estate Vroondaal between The Hague and Westland. Oasis in city centre: the Nutstuin

A still and pretty place filled with running water flowers and greenery is now ope in The Hague. It's called the Nutstuin.

A12 closed for three days
From Wednesday evening until Saturday evening 18:00, the A12 from The Hague heading towards Utrecht will be closed. Road crews will be laying new asphalt on the highway between Pins Clausplein and Zoetemeer.

All traffic leaving The Hague in the direction of Utrecht can drive via the A4 or N11 via the A13 and A20 highways instead.

Mladic in Scheveningen
An exclusive report

Ratko Mladic arrived last night at Scheveningen prison in a convoy of four vehicles. Hundreds of press gathered at the wrong side of the prison to get that shot.

Thexpat.tv was lucky enough to be on the correct side. Yet despite all of our efforts, no one succeeded in getting that shot of Mladic in person.

The accused war criminal is now awaiting trial for genocide in his Scheveningen prison cell.

Ratko Mladic is accused of a number of murders, including the cold blooded execution of 7,500 Bosnian Muslim boys and men at Srebrenica in 1995.

Massacre in Alphen aan den Rijn
During a shooting in Alphen aan de Rijn on Saturday afternoon, six people were shot dead by a lone gunman. A 24 year-old man opened fire on shoppers with an automatic weapon. He then produced a second weapon and shot himself in the head, dying at the scene.

Defence cuts 12000 jobs
Defence will cut thousands of military jobs and scrap a significant chunk of military equipment. Defense Minister Hans Hillen said the Netherlands will cut 12,000 military jobs, about 17% of its total staff, and retire 19 F-16 fighter jets, four minesweepers and two tank battalions. The measures should result in EUR1 billion in savings by 2014.

Toads on the run
Every year in March and April toads leave their winter hibernation beds and travel to spring spawning grounds. If a road lies between the hibernation and spawning grounds there is a possibility the toads are run over by a car. On Wednesday March 2nd, the people of The Hague brought out their votes during the Provincial State elections. The PvdA got 22,5 % of the votes, followed by the VVD with 19,5 %. In our entire province of Zuid-Holland, the VVD became the largest party with 22% of the total votes.

The British singer and songwriter Elton John, will be the star at this year's Royal Beach Concert at Scheveningen beach. Also, local legends, Golden Earing will be performing at the second edition of the Royal Beach Concert. This year's event will go ahead on June 4.

More paid parking district Centrum
From March 1 the city district Centrum will have extended paid parking hours. Instead of drivers only having to pay up until 22:00 in the afternoon. This has been extended to midnight. Residents of the Archipel Neigbourhood however will not have their paid parking hours extended and the 17:00 limit remains in place. The extension of paid parking was, according to the municipality, introduced to make parking regulations the same throughout the Centrum.

EU subsidy to improve Westduinpark
A 600,000 euro EU subsidy will be spent on improving the Westduinpark between the Vogelwijk and the NorthSea. The money will help the city maintain the large plant biodiversity in the dunes and restrict more intrusive plant species, which hamper diversity.

The Municipality of The Hague has halted storage of rubbish at the Norfolkterrein in Scheveningen.The rubble comes from Scheveningen's Boulevard that is currently being renovated. In 2009 The Municipality of The Hague signed an agreement to commence the cleanup of nine designated locations with polluted ground. The cleanup of four locations has begun and the others will be tackled between now and 2015. The nature of the pollution ranges from cleaning chemicals to oil and asbestos. Because they lie under the ground the municipality says the threat is relatively low because of the small chance of direct contact.

Ov-chipkaart under fire
The Province of Zuid Holland has decided to continue with the launch of the OV Chipkaart on February 3. This is despite, the system recently being hacked. The Province of Zuid Holland responded by saying the ov-chipkaart will go ahead as scheduled and any person illegally trying to enter the system, will be prosecuted like any other common thief.

Panorama Picture
A local artist, Marcello, has joined forces with a Hague photographer to create a six meter modern day update of Mesdag's famous Panorama of Scheveningen. They are hoping the six meter long image, which is made of over 30 photographs, will find a home in The Hague.

Light Advertising
A licence has been granted to place large illuminated advertising boards at the entrance to Scheveningen Pier and along its sides. They say the advertisments will be 48 meters square and will be visible for miles along the Dutch coast. The GroenLinks party of The Hague and many of Scheveningen's residents are strongly opposed.

Vissersvrouw moves out

The Lady who watches over the sea at Scheveningen has found a temporary new home. The monumental statue, dedicated to perished fishermen, had to move because of construction work taking place on the boulevard. The Vissersvrouw's new home is the square at the front of the Oude Kerk on the Keizerstraat.

Students protest

Between 11,000 and 15,000 students came to the Malieveld in the Hague to demonstrate to the cuts in higher education. The students are angry about the plan that students who take a year longer than the standard three years to get a degree will have to pay an extra €3,000. On the stage at the Malieveld figures from politics and education spoke. Among them: PvdA leader Cohen, D66 leader Pechtold and SP leader Roemer.

Local festivities Chinese New Year cancelled

The Stichting Chinatown is disappointed by the municipality's decision to stop the sponsoring of the celebrations of the Chinese New Year in The Hague this year. Therefore the local festivities are cancelled. The traditional national celebrations of the Chinese New Year in the Atrium of The Hague City Hall will go ahead as planned on 5 February.

New 'Haagse Passage'

In the centre of The Hague, the former Marks & Spencer building will be demolished to make room for the Nieuwe Haagse Passage. The Nieuwe Haagse Passage will form a link between the Spuistraat and Grote Marktstraat in The Hague's central shopping district.

Waylon on Liberation day Festival in The Hague

The Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei has announced the musicians that will perform as Ambassadors for Freedom in 2011. And that means that Dutch soul singer Waylon, will be the top act for the Liberation day Festival (Bevrijdingsfestival) on May 5. Bye bye strippenkaart

From February the 3rd, Hague residents will no longer be able to use the strippenkaart for public transport. From this date onwards, travelers must use the new public transport OV-chipkaart, or pay with coins.

It was 75 years ago that the Gemeente Museum was opened. To commemorate the man who designed the museum an exhibition called Berlage Totaal has been opened. H.P. On Monday 29 November, the winter service in The Hague began. Salt trucks are now on standby day and night. So far Hague residents have not suffered many disruptions.The city is also appealing for residents and businesses of The Hague to help out by keeping their properties, footpaths and parking areas ice and snow free. Salt can be obtained at city farms (stadsboerderijen), rubbish depots and city district municipal centers (except for the one in Centrum).

A special test couch was placed in the Grote Marktstraat yesterday. The couch is the first of six such couches, which are expected to be placed in and around the Grote Marktstraat. An official test period is now underway, to see if the first couch can stand up to the elements and public opinion. Next year, the area will undergo improvements to transform the Grote Markt into an shopping boulevard with international allure.

An Edible Park was opened in The Hague's Zuiderpark. The Edible Park was created by the English artist Nils Norman, Stroom Art Centre and Gezonde Grond. it's aim is to create a permaculture garden under the Foodprint Program. With Edible Park, the creators wanted the permaculture and sustainable gardening to be seen as an art form in themselves. They hope the practices on display will catch on and be adopted by residents of the city.

The project, which is called Aardwarmte Den Haag, has drilled more than two kilometres into the earth to find hot water. A cap is a simple solution, providing warmth for babies to help them survive their first days out of the womb. Every year, two million newborns die within the first month of their life. Save the Children Fund wants people of The Hague to knit a baby cap to help save some of these newborns. Green roofs 'groene daken' is an initiative from the municipality to encourage Hague residents grow a bed of vegetation on their roofs. The program provides residents with a subsidy to turn their drab grey roof onto a bed of green, improve air quality and fight flooding in the city. One resident of Scheveningen got together with fellow residents to turn their bike shed roof into a patch of green among the bricks and mortar.
