The yarn is the always-scrumptious Malabrigo Rios - Snuggly and squishy!

This color is absolutely gorgeous on Kelly! The sweater is the Middlefield Pullover from New England Knits. The yarn is Madeline Tosh Vintage in color Corsage. Lovely! And we have lots of Madeline Tosh Vintage (and Sock and Pashmina) due to arrive some time in April. Can't wait!
So sweet - both the sweater and the model!

Help us help the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation

We know that technically, Breast Cancer Awareness month is in October, but we've decided that any time is the right time to raise awareness. With this in mind we joined forces with the Jennie G (of Keep Calm and Carry Yarn bag fame) to develop this The Yarn Lounge Cares project bag.

Each specially-designed bag is $25 and all net proceeds are going to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, a breast cancer advocacy group that's been around for 20 years advocating and educating for women in Virginia.

From their website:

For the last 20 years, Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation has successfully advocated for national and state legislation that ensures funding and access to screening and treatment of breast cancer for all.

National accomplishments include federal funding for breast cancer research and treatment and bills mandating insurance coverage for treatment and procedures – including the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act.

In Virginia, VBCF was the leading advocacy group to push for laws and regulations that provide for insurance coverage for mammograms, breast reconstruction surgery, and breast cancer survivors in general. We have also spearheaded the creation of a Trust Fund to help pay for the treatment of uninsured women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

VBCF provides scholarships for advocates to attend leadership and educational conferences and meetings around the country. These advocates then get to sit at the table during national discussions regarding research and policy.

VBCF cuts through the all the noise about breast cancer by providing educational materials and a speakers bureau to ensure the public has accurate information about breast cancer.

Be a part of their important work. If you don't need another project bag, please consider donating and/or volunteering. More information can be found at vbcf.org.
Apparently, Natalie was in a knit-a-long/contest with a good friend to see who finished this sweater first. It's "Maythorn," a pattern by Louisa Harding and Natalie used the dear-to-our-hearts Shepherd's Wool from the folks as Stonehedge Fiber Mill. Perhaps we'll see a finished object from the other contestant in the coming weeks.

Beautiful hat on a beautiful head! Kelly knit this "Rustling Leaves Beret" from the book Coastal Knits using the Tactile Fiber Arts Temecula Sock yarn. It's amazing how well this sock yarn shows off the stitch definition and lace patterning in this beret.

Jaime has taken the Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light to a whole new realm--weaving! She mixed these four colors and wove this beautiful scarf in her weaving class. It was a gift from her son and she was able to borrow it back from him just long enough to bring it by to show us. Quite handsome!

Bobby! (Though you wouldn't know it!) He's simultaneously modeling our Madeline Tosh color card as well as the Rasta hat that Susan recently knit. Knitting from a pattern in her head, Susan used the Berroco Ultra Alpaca.

Here's Hilda, showing off a lovely and warm-looking shawl knit from stash yarn from an alpaca farm near her place in the country. It might come in handy if we have another cold day this "winter."

And last but not least, here's a tiny sweater by Kristen. She spun this yarn by hand on a drop spindle, dyed it with green onion and indigo and used the knitter's handy book of sweater patterns by Ann Budd to design and knit the sweater.

New Cestari yarn!

This just in from the lovely folks at Cestari all the way in Churchville, Virginia: The Floral Collection. It's a 100% fine merino yarn knitting up at 4st/1in and each skein has 170yds. The colors are absolutely divine!

We have these shown here plus black and cream.

Perfect for a relatively quick, squishy, wooly knit such as Aidez, a free pattern from the folks at Berroco. Love this!

This is how much we love you...

We've got Rowan! Feeling a little spring feverish? Looking for a warmer weather project? Spring/Summer Rowan reinforcements have arrived!

First, the books:

Rowan Magazine 51

Rowan Magazine 51 contains 29 innovative designs with another 12 re-interpretations of a few of them (with different colors and added details). Stripes and texture are in (though not necessarily at the same time) as are feminine silhouettes. Breezy and not overly body-conscious, there are designs to suit and flatter a range of body types and personal styles.

Holiday Crochet

If ever there was a book to make me wish I could crochet, this is it. Shells, cardigans, pullovers, wraps, tees, and even a bag are included in the Holiday Crochet Collection. Really, just lovely.

Little Rowan

Little Rowan is a sweet collection of of 17 designs for toddlers and babies using fabulous color combinations and cute details.

Seascapes

Also new for spring is Seascapes, a collection of transitional sweaters in pullover, tee, and cardigan forms for both men and women. One of the yarns featured is Creative Linen, one of the new spring yarns introduced this season and it looks like this:

Creative Linen

Creative Linen is a gorgeous 50/50 blend of linen and cotton. We ordered every color because we just couldn't narrow it down. The palette covers the spectrum but the fiber combination gives this yarn a lovely muted finish. We haven't played with it yet but the stated gauge is 21st/4in on a US7. Not too tiny, not too fat, just right.

Siena

Though Rowan Siena isn't a new yarn, we added loads of lovely colors in this 28st/4in mercerized cotton. The gauge is wee but the stitch definition and sheen is second to none. You've got plenty of time to finish by summer. Get those tiny (US2 or 3) needles moving. You won't regret it.

_____

And isn't there some holiday today? Something about love and candy and flowers? Oh yes, Happy Valentine's Day!

FO Friday!!!

There is a plethora or FOs for you this week!

Nancy finished her lovely Brea from The Lima Collection. She was a semi-shy model so she enlisted Melanie to do the honors. The yarn is the soft, drape-y, and lovely Rowan Lima.

Daryl is an extraordinary weaver. She wove up this lovely, lovely scarf out of HandMaiden Marrakesh, which is a silk and baby camel blend. And yes, that skein was woven into that scarf with no color trickery. It's just stunning and feels like a dream. If you like it to be yours, head over to ArtisIn at Ginter Place (1350 Westwood Avenue). There is an opening reception tonight from 6-9pm and open hours Saturday (11am-5pm) and Sunday (12-4pm). The event is free and a percentage of the proceeds to benefit ChildSavers. Unfortunately there is no website for the event but I've included all the pertinent information. If Daryll's scarf is any indication, the caliber of hand made goods is pretty darn high.

Cate! Ruffles! This is Zest which Cate knit out of Classic Elite MountainTop Vail. Those ruffles were a labor of love (or just labor?) as they were added on after the scarf was knit. Vail is a gorgeous alpaca and bamboo fingering weight yarn that feels like a dream. The pattern is available for purchase and download from Classic Elite here. Don't be fooled by the picture on the Classic Elite page, the pattern includes the pattern for a shawl as well.

This is the first of Joan's two FOs this week. It's the Basic Pullover (addressing Rule #2: Men Resist Change-ha!) in Knits Men Want by Bruce Weinstein. Joan used String Theory's Merino DK. The picture doesn't do it justice - it's squishy and lovely and the man for whom it's destined will look smashing.

Joan also finished up these Seaweed Sock designed by Wendy D. Johnson. The pattern is available free here. She used Madeline Tosh Sock (we have loads on order due to arrive sometime late March to mid-April). They're lovely!

Natalie, too, is a two-FO-er this week! First up is her shy guy Ian modeling the Snow Hat and Neck Warmer from Rowan Winter Warmers. When the top is un-cinched the hat becomes a snuggly cowl. Knit up in Rowan Lima Ian won't want to take it off!

Also from Miss Natalie is this lovely cardigan knit out of Malabrigo Rios. The pattern is from Vogue Knitting from a few years ago. What you can't see in the picture is her son hiding behind her. He's too cute!

Nice work, everybody! Rumor has we're supposed to have more winter-like temperatures this weekend. Wheeheeee! Time to wear all these wooly lovelies we've all been working on for months!

FO Friday!!!

Needles have been a-clicking this week!

Linda! She correctly told us she had finished the cutest mittens ever. We couldn't agree more. These mitts are a combination of a Morehouse Merino kit pattern (kit available from Morehouse Farm here) and Ann Budd's mitten pattern from her Handy Book of Knitting Patterns. The black and white yarns are Shepherd's Wool, the yellow is from stash. Melanie and I both had to try these on. Love them!

Kay was stockpiling her FOs for knit night where they had their Yarn Lounge debut! This super-cool sweater is knit from the luscious-but-no-longer-in-stock Bijou Basin Bijou Bliss (a cormo and yak blend - yum!). The pattern is So Inclined by Chris Bylsma. Very cool!

Also fresh off the needles is the Windsor cowl New England Knits. What a fantastic use of stash yarn!

Jaime's back! This time around she's completed Winnowing by Bristol Ivy. The pattern is from Jared Flood's Wool People - Vol. 2, a lovely collection of sweaters, shawls, and accessories. You can purchase the patterns singly here.

This is Grandma Sue with her grandchild sporting Sue's latest FO. I'm unsure of yarn and pattern but how sweet is this picture?!?! And I can't believe Sue has a grandchild - she looks like she could be mom!

While you might think this hat and scarf are my latest FOs you'd be incorrect, these are the handiwork of camera-shy Clenise. The snuggly hat is the Rhossili Beach Watch Cap knit out of Berroco Blackstone Tweed from Wendy Knits Lace by Wendy D. Johnson. The lovely cable-y frilly scarf knit out of MillaMia is the Super Yak Scarf from One-Skein Wonders by Judith Durant.

Lovely, everyone! Enjoy your Super Bowl weekend - we expect lots of knitting will get done on Sunday night between commercials.

Spring 2012 knitscene is here and ready to inspire!

knitscene spring 2012 - cover design by Amy Herzog!

The Spring 2012 issue of knitscene just arrived and offers 23 knits to take you from cold to not-so-cold this spring.

The East Falls Hat designed by Kate Gagnon Osborn knit out of The Fibre Company Acadia has just the right amount of slouch and with so many gorgeous colors from which to choose, selecting them is half the fun!

I'm loving the retro style of Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark's Seberg Sweater knit out of Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece. Change the top part to a solid, pair it with a jauntily-tied neck scarf and maybe even some demure white gloves and you're spot on! Brown Sheep offers Cotton Fleece in lots of lovely colors - more fun color selecting!

Need an excuse to use Malabrigo Sock? I didn't think so but if you've had your fill of socks, give the Natalie Mitts by Andrea Jurgrau a try. With or without the bead detail, these are the perfect not-cold-enough-for-gloves-but-paws-need-a-little-something something.

FO Friday!!!

So far, we're all in-house for this week's FO Friday with one small-world exception!

Karen recently finished up her Cassis by Thea Coleman out of Imperial Stock Ranch Columbia yarn. It's the perfect layering piece and because it's knit from the top-down you can do all kinds of customization (think shorter or longer, full or short sleeves). This great transitional pattern is available through Ravelry's in-store pattern sales. Karen's necklace is the perfect accoutrement, too!

I've been busy knitting but not so busy taking pictures of said knitting. This is the Easy Folded Poncho from Churchmouse Yarns and Teas knit out of new-this-year Rowan Tweed. I made mine a bit wider and longer but it's like a nice, warm, wooly hug on a cold day.

Also fresh off the needles is this Saroyan knit out of Cestari's Traditional Collection 100% wool yarn. The pattern is available free here. The yarn is a worsted weight usually getting between 4 and 4.5 stitches per inch on a US8 but for the Saroyan I used a US10. For grins I machine washed the finished piece in cold water on a gentle cycle and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. The yarn bloomed up beautifully and filled in any space made by the larger needle. I don't know that I'd recommend this treatment for something where fit is an issue but whew, it's just gorgeous all washed up.

Cate finished up this sweet self-designed scarf out of the extraordinarily luscious Moonlight yarn from Jade Sapphire. The yarn is a cashmere and combed mink combo, whoa. It's the perfect yarn to have next to one's skin. Lovely!

Another Cate FO! This is the Shoemaker's Hat designed by Clara Parkes knit out of Blue Sky Alpaca Bulky. Warm and stylish and destined to make someone's head very toasty!

Lastly but not leastly we have Karen modeling the scarf knit for her by her daughter's mother-in-law, Anne, out of Fleece Artist Tiffendel. Funny story - these two met by happenstance for the first time here at The Yarn Lounge a few days before Karen's daughter married Anne's son. Anne lives in Florida but was scoping out Richmond yarns shops. Very. Small. World.

Enjoy the gorgeous weather this weekend and keep those needles and hooks flying!

New Kim Hargreaves' books!

Not one but three new Kim Hargreaves books arrived recently.

Who is that masked, er cowled woman? It's Mimi! With an FO! The pattern is the Man (or Anyone) Cowl by This Boy Knits and is available free here. Mimi used stash yarn - it's fantastic! I just wish I could see the smile under the cowl.

Doesn't Lisa look lovely in her Fiber Trends Easy Lace Wrap knit out of Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Lace? Don't you love how she paired it with a burgundy turtleneck and white sweater? It show's off the pattern and colors beautifully!

This is Ginger in her Three Sisters from Cheryl Oberle's Knitted Jackets. Ginger used Stonehedge Fiber Mills Shepherd's Wool in color Denim. It's gorgeous!

When I was sick last week my knitting mojo had all but disappeared. When I emerged from my sinus-induced fog the urge to knit and purl returned (thankfully). First up was this simple hat knit out of Cestari Cozy Collection Bulky in color Dahlia Red. Knit up on size 10 and 10.5 I had an almost instant sense of accomplishment. You can, too, because I wrote down the pattern and have it available at the shop if you're so inclined to make one for yourself. If you buy the yarn, I'll give you the pattern. My toasty gift to you.
_____
If you're in the neighborhood this weekend, swing by and say hello. We've got some new goodies that have yet to make it to the blog. You can be one of the first to see the new Kim Hargeaves' books and knitscene..... More on those on the blog next week.

Shabby-styley canvas buckets for your stash needs.

How cool are these?

And introducing the latest to the Malabrigo line, Arroyo!

Malabrigo Arroyo

Arroyo is the smaller cousin to Rios. It's a machine-washable pure merino wool knitting up at 20-22sts/4inches though we suspect it's happier knit up a bit tighter. There are 335 soft and squishy yards with which to knit or crochet. It's Malabrigo so it has to be good, right? Right.

Welcome to the shelves, Cestari!

Cestari, LTD is a mill located just down the road a bit west of Staunton. The lovely Carrie models her "Austin Hoodie" (pattern by Connie Chang Chinchio) that her husband, Nathan, knit for her out of the Louet GemsSport. This is his first full-on sweater attempt (he's done a couple of vests before) and he assures us it isn't his last. Fabulous work Nathan! It's lovely and fits perfectly!

If you're not Kelly's friend and you're about to have a baby, look her up and be her friend. She's knit so many cute baby hats for the babies of friends! This is the Cabled Teddy Hat pattern available for purchase from raverly here. Kelly used Shepherd's Wool for this sweet hat.

And this is Kelly (the one with whom you want to be friends) wearing her Francis Revisited (available free on ravelry). She used Malabrigo Worsted and it's even more gorgeous in person!

Neither the yarn nor the pattern are from here but this Peerie Flooer hat designed by Kate Davies and knit by Leslie was just too pretty not to share. She used Rowan Fine Tweed (we carry the dk weight but you can find the Fine at the lovely Knitting Sisters in Williamsburg). The pattern is available through ravelry here and Kate Davies is set up for us to sell the pattern through ravelry here at the shop, too. Beautiful!

Miss Sally finished up her screaming-sale-Mission-Falls baby blanket just in time for her new grandchild! She used the Churchmouse Yarns and Teas' Garter Blocks Baby Blanket pattern. Her new grandchild lives in Colorado so this will be nice and snuggly!

Jaime's back! This time she knit up Herbivore designed by Stephen West. The Malabrigo Sock yarn she used is the richest deep red! Just lovely!

Last FO Friday of 2011!!!

Kathleen headlines our post today. She's made a few of these scarves using various yarns and the pattern "Misty Garden" from Scarf Style but this one was made with the extra soft and squishy Acadia from The Fibre Company. Lovely!
Thanks for not keeping these lovely FOs under wraps! Nice job, everyone!

Cate has to be one of the most photogenic women I've ever met. She doesn't take a bad picture! And she has the perfect hat head, too. Here she's sporting Escargot from knitty. She used Ultra Alpaca to lovely effect.

Laurel's been busy, too, finishing up this lovely feather-and-fan scarf out of sock yarn and Ultra Alpaca Light. Gorgeous!

Who is that masked knitter? It's Faith! She's having some fun with her fairisle Malabrigo hat. Love those colors!

How gorgeous are these? These are Faith's take on the Endpaper Mitts from Eunny Jang. She used O-Wool's 2-Ply organicv wool in a lovely seafoam and cream.

There are two poses for mitts pictures, Faith's dramatic take and here, Kelly's hot cup of tea/hot chocolate/coffee favored by pattern picture takers the world over. There's just something soothing about warm hands around a warm mug. Kelly just finished sewing the buttons on her Welted Fingerless Gloves from Churchmouse Yarns and Teas using Ultra Alpaca Light. Those buttons are absolutely perfect!

Also from Kelly's needles this week is the Growing Leaves Cowl. She knit this one out of Malabrigo Twist in a lovely dusty pink.

Mimi! I'm so sorry I neglected to add this to FO Friday several weeks ago. I'm so glad she said something! This is a spectacular afghan (the picture does not do it justice) she crocheted using a Designer Square pattern from Interweave Crochet. The yarn is the now-discountinued Mission Falls 136. Fantastic! And my apologies for the delay!

These are the spoils of Cate's last Fun & Frilly Scarf class! Don't they look festive! Nice job, ladies! And we still have a few colors left of this fun 'yarn' so if you have any last minute gifts to complete, this might be your answer!

Winnie looks so great in her dress! It's a heavily-modified version of the Gym Slip Dress from Knit 2 Together. Winnie used Rowan's Felted Tweed. Love it!

Melanie B. finished up this Owl Sweater in trade for her friend's artwork. Nice barter! Melanie used Lamb's Pride Bulky in a gorgeous green!

Alice knit up these gorgeous Spruce Mittens from Robin Hansen's book Favorite Mittens. She used Tuckahoe Plantation's yarn in two natural colors for these warm and lanolin-y mittens!

Most excellent work, everyone! Please have a safe and happy holiday!
We know, you're most recent FOs are gifts and you don't want to spoil any surprises.

Mr. Colby is most handsome in the shawl collar snowflake sweater made for him by his grandma Leslie! The details of this creation are not within site of my sofa so I can't give you the 411 but suffice it to say it's precious!

Karen! The temperatures were just cold enough for this lovely Issara (available for purchase through Twist Collective here). Karen used Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky in color Bing Cherry. Very stylish and warm!

When I opened the box containing Scrumptious Chunky, I had to drop everything else and figure out what to make. I settled on the Bandana Cowl from the Purl Bee. Quick and easy and I got my Scrumptious Chunky fix.

Enjoy the weekend before the weekend before Christmas and keep those needles and hooks flying! Hope to see you soon!

Scrumptious Chunky

Sounds mouth-watering, no? If one could consume yarn, this would be the yarn to consume. It's Scrumptious Chunky (really) from Fyberspates and is a most delicious blend of silk (45%) and merino (55%). The colors are so deep with a bit of sheen thanks to the silk.

The 131 yards knit up at a not-especially-chunky 4st/in on a US10 will net you the most gorgeous cowl or a lovely hat. A shawl would require a few more skeins but can you imagine?!
