So, if this is the case, the very first thing you must do is make an appointment to see your doctor for a professional diagnosis.

Do not self-diagnose even if you know someone who has had yeast infections and your symptoms are similar to theirs. This is very important because yeast infection symptoms can be the symptoms of other conditions that will require totally different treatment regimens.

So that if you assume that you have a yeast infection and treat yourself using over-the-counter medications for the ‘infection’ you could be ignoring a totally different condition for which those OTC medications are useless.

Therefore you must get a proper diagnosis from a health-care professional, do not self-diagnose.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

Typical vaginal yeast infection symptoms to look out for are…

inflammation

redness

swelling

itching

thick white discharge

burning sensation during urination

uncomfortable or even impossible sex

Penile yeast infection symptoms are…

blister-like spots over the head of the penis

red swollen head

itching

similar problems as above with urinating and sex

dry flaky skin

sometimes an unusual discharge

For an oral infection look out for…

creamy white raised spots over the tongue and mucous membranes

sometimes the spots are more like a thick white coating over the tongue

bleeding wounds revealed when the spots / coating is scraped away

possible burning sensation in mouth and throat

perhaps bad breath

in some cases flat red spots on the lips

But remember, even if you have some or all of these symptoms (depending on where the infection is located) and this is your first possible yeast infection, consult with your doctor before you do anything else.

Let’s now assume that you have been to your doctor and been diagnosed with a yeast infection…

Yeast Infection Treatment

Your doctor will normally prescribe the appropriate medication or will sometimes just give you the name of an over-the-counter medication to buy without a prescription.

In general, mainstream treatment employs anti-fungal drugs in different forms depending on where the infection is situated. Typical OTC medications are…

creams, suppositories and tablets for vaginal yeast infections.

creams, ointments and sprays for penile infections.

rinses, sprays and lozenges for oral infections.

Whatever your doctor recommends you must finish the course. And if the symptoms still persist after the course is completed you must inform your doctor for further consideration.

These mainstream medications are usually pretty effective in eliminating the symptoms of a yeast infection. But what they aren’t so effective in doing is addressing the root causes of yeast infection….

Yeast Infection Causes

A yeast infection is ultimately caused by an overgrowth of the Candida albicans yeast-like fungus that we all have in our bodies. Under normal conditions our body’s friendly bacteria help to keep the bad bacteria, like Candid albicans, in check so that they don’t overgrow. So in a healthy body your bacterial environment is ‘in balance.’

When this environment becomes unbalanced then the Candida can overgrow and cause the symptoms of yeast infection. The triggers for this are things like…

friendly bacteria depletion

a compromised immune system

high blood sugar

hormonal imbalance

body pH imbalance

certain drug therapies

Each one of these can help to enable the fungus to proliferate. And if you have more than one, such as a lowered immune system because of stress or illness, too high blood sugar because of a poor diet and / or diabetes, hormonal imbalance due to oral contraception, menstruation or HRT, then you are at an even higher risk of yeast infection.

Other issues are things like antibiotics overuse that kills the good bacteria as well as the bad, the use of feminine hygiene products that upset the pH balance in the vagina, and certain drugs like immunosuppressants that affect the immune system.

So although mainstream drug-based anti-fungal medication can be effective in getting rid of the symptoms you need to ensure that you address the root cause(s) of your Candida infection to help prevent recurring infections which can seriously affect your health.

Broader Approach to Treating Yeast Infections

Key to this approach is making certain dietary changes, for example avoiding…

sugar, sweets, and sugar-rich foods.

refined carbohydrates.

non-organic meat and poultry which are often treated with antibiotics and hormones.

yeast products.

cow’s milk dairy products.

stimulants such as tea, coffee, energy drinks, cigarettes, etc.

Instead you should consume…

non-refined carbohydrates like potatoes, wholewheat products, yeast-free breads, etc.

organic meat, poultry and fish which won’t have been treated in the same way as in modern farming methods.

soya milk dairy products.

non-stimulant infusions such as chamomile tea, etc.

In addition you should…

reduce stress through better time management, daily exercise, and stress-relieving techniques.

stop or at the very least reduce smoking.

try to avoid antibiotics if at all possible (talk to your doctor about alternatives).

avoid feminine hygiene products and replace them with natural hygiene methods.

get your doctor to test you for any hormonal imbalances.

Note: It is important to consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet. And do not stop taking any medication that your doctor has prescribed without their prior approval.

Related Posts:

No Related Posts

Candida infection is not limited to the mouth; it can occur in other parts of the body as well, causing diaper rash in infants or vaginal yeast infections in women.

Thrush can affect anyone, though it occurs most often in babies and toddlers, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Thrush Treatment

While healthy individuals can be effectively treated for thrush, the symptoms may be more severe and difficult to manage in those with weakened immune systems. Antifungal medications, which are generally taken for 10 to 14 days, are often prescribed to treat thrush. These medicines are available in tablets, lozenges, or liquids. Your dentist will have a specific treatment approach designed for you based on your age and the cause of the infection. Because the presence of candida infection can be a symptom of other medical problems, your dentist may suggest you seek care from a medical doctor as well so that any underlying health problems you may have can be treated.

What causes thrush?

Small amounts of the candida fungus are present in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin of most healthy people and are normally kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms in the body. However, certain illnesses, stress, or medications can disturb the delicate balance, causing the fungus candida to grow out of control, causing thrush.

Medications that upset the balance of microorganisms in the mouth and may cause thrush include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and birth control pills. Illnesses or medical situations that make candida infection more likely to develop include uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, cancer, dry mouth, or pregnancy (caused by the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy). People who smoke or wear dentures that don’t fit properly also are at increased risk for thrush. In addition, babies can pass the infection to their mothers during breast-feeding.

What are the symptoms of thrush?

Thrush usually develops suddenly, but it may become chronic, persisting over a long period of time. A common sign of thrush is the presence of creamy white, slightly raised lesions in your mouth—usually on your tongue or inner cheeks—but also sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of your throat. The lesions, which may have a “cottage cheese” appearance, can be painful and may bleed slightly when you scrape them or brush your teeth. In severe cases, the lesions may spread into your esophagus, or swallowing tube, causing:

Pain or difficulty swallowing

A feeling that food gets stuck in the throat or mid-chest area

Fever, if the infection spreads beyond the esophagus

Thrush can spread to other parts of the body, including the lungs, liver, and skin. This happens more often in people with cancer, HIV, or other conditions that weaken the immune system.
Read more on Dental Health and Thrush…
Copyright ©2009, WebMD, LLC. A week later, if the correct method was used, there will be no more signs of the yeast infection. However, this may work on everyday yeast infections in a healthy individual. But those who have a chronic illness or condition must look out for extenuating symptoms that could indicate an infection that could be more serious and requires a doctor to diagnose and prescribe treatment…

Anyone, for example, with diabetes has to be especially wary of getting a yeast infection, as well as those with compromised immune systems or cancer. Be aware also that if the Candida albicans yeast is causing you to have recurring yeast infections, there is no question but that you must seek medical intervention.

Nevertheless, as we have mentioned more than once, numerous women diagnosis their yeast infection and pick the medication to treat it with from OTC drugs. If you insist on following this course of action, pay close attention to how your body responds to the medication you have chosen. You may recognize easily the common symptoms of a yeast infection, but if they are accompanied by other, more ominous symptoms, don’t hesitate to visit your local clinic or hospital. Even symptoms such as a bout of depression or over-tiredness when accompanied by supposed yeast infection symptoms can be a sign you need to seek medical advice. These are all symptoms that really have nothing to do with a vaginal yeast infection, but could indicate something much more sinister.

One situation where you don’t want to procrastinate visiting your doctor or clinic is if you, or your child, gets a case of oral thrush. This appears in the mouth. Naturally, you don’t want to compromise the health of your child, so a trip to the doctor goes without saying. Oral thrush isn’t hard to treat as long as there are no other health conditions to consider or complications. You or your child might find it painful to drink anything or eat normal foods while battling a case of oral thrush. This can be a major concern. You are risking dehydration in this case, which is a danger in and of itself. If you become seriously dehydrated, your doctor may admit you to the hospital for fluid resuscitation, which will replenish your bodily fluids. He might also change the prescription he is giving you to treat the oral thrush.

The only way to accurately, safely and effectively treat a yeast infection is to receive an examination and evaluation from your doctor. Even your best-shot guess could be wrong in spite of the fact that you have had similar symptoms before. Actually, there are three infections called “vaginitis” and only a yeast infection is caused by the Candida albicans fungus. The others are caused by sexual transmission of a protozoan or by bacteria. By self-medicating with the wrong treatment, you stand the chance of making your infection worse. This is exactly what you need to keep from doing. If that should happen, then you will be paying a visit to the doctor anyway.

What is a little shocking is that, according to one study, two-thirds of women who self-diagnosed their supposed yeast infection actually did not have a yeast infection. Some of the other infections, also known as vaginitis and with the same general symptoms, are bacterial vaginosis and trichonomiasis. Bacterial vaginosis is extremely serious and is actually treated with antibiotics instead of anti-fungal medications such as those used to treat a yeast infection. There is a particular type of protozoan that can cause symptoms very similar to vaginal yeast infection. Protozoa are unicellular protists similar to amoeba, but are considered animals. In the event your infection is sexually transmitted, but not a yeast infection, treating it with over-the-counter yeast infection remedies won’t do any good.

More often than not, you will be able to successfully treat and eliminate your yeast infection quite easily. Systemic yeast infections are the most critical and are caused when the fungus enters your bloodstream and quickly spreads in your body.

Some yeast infections are easy to treat but I’m sure you’ll agree that it can be very risky trying to treat the more complicated yeast infections. The critical conditions surface in people who have a weakened immune system, especially those with HIV/AIDS. A person who has undergone an organ transplant has to take immune suppression medications so their transplanted organ won’t be rejected. If someone has to undergo long-term radiation treatments, for example, this can impact their immune system and make them susceptible to a serious case of Candidiasis.

Naturally, you will need to have sufficient health insurance to deal with health issues like this one. Check with your physician to find out more.

With the astounding oxford health insurance you can obtain the coverage you need at a cost you can manage. It is well known that antibiotics being used too much can aggravate conditions of this kind. This is because it affects the balance of bacteria in your body and also has the effect of impacting negatively upon how your immune system works.

The main concern in this regard is yeast which is not affected by antibiotics and is therefore free to grow and spread, taking the place of bacteria which has been removed. It then is allowed to multiply and can cause a condition such as this to arise. You may then be likely to experience a great deal of physical discomfort.

When you are troubled by problems of this kind it can have a negative impact on your every day life. In addition to obvious problems such as itching and general discomfort it can lead the skin to become red and patchy you may also be affected by a sticky cottage cheese like white vaginal discharge that can be the cause of distress.

It is more common to be affected by something like this if you have been on a program of taking oral contraceptives. These are known to cause issues of imbalance within your body and also to affect your hormones. It is also a commonly known fact that taking birth control pills can affect other elements of your health and well being.

You can also apply this to lots of different medication such as steroids which are used to treat a whole host of illnesses. It’s also the case for medications that have been designed for AIDS and cancer treatments. These can damage the function of your immune system and this means that yeast is more likely to spread to areas affected.

When you provide an environment that is moist and warm then it increases the likelihood of yeast flourishing. Try avoiding tightly fitted clothing and instead wear looser clothing which is composed of natural fabrics that allow skin to breath and this will help to stop any issue occurring. You should pay due attention to airing out affected areas.

If you happen to be someone who is overweight or obese then lots of health problems are likely to come your way and cause you long term problems. You are more liable to have too much sugar in your body and this provides fuel for yeast to be produced. It is best to reduce your sugar levels. Just when you think you have solved the problem, it comes back to haunt you again.

Recurring yeast infections are very frustrating. Just when you think you have solved the problem, the infection comes back to haunt you again. There are a various causes behind recurring yeast infections. Believe it or not, taking antibiotics is actually one of them. Yes, antibiotics can cause yeast infections. Here’s why…

Your digestive system has a natural condition of good and bad bacteria. When you take antibiotics, it throws off the balance in your body. The first issue that antibiotics do is kill the bacteria in your belly. It can’t tell the difference among the two. As such, it also gets rid of the good bacteria. This leads to reoccurring yeast infections.

When there aren’t enough helpful bacteria to keep the harmful ones (such as Candida) at bay, bad bacteria will overwhelm your body. This will then lead to repeated cycles of yeast infection. To stop reoccurring yeast infections, you need to alter selected habits which will eliminate the root cause and not just the indicators. In other words, you need to change your lifestyle!

For instance, your food intake plays an important role as to why you have reoccurring yeast infections. Remember this: yeast loves sugar. And a diet rich in carbohydrates will raise your sugar levels that will cause the yeast in your body to get to unmanageable levels.

Recurring yeast infections are also caused by sporting tight pants. It’s easy for Candida to type quickly with the right conditions. Restrictive pants made of non-breathable material such as leather, polyester and nylon traps moisture and heat. So opt for fabrics made of cotton to inhibit the growth of yeast.

Lastly, you should be mindful of the kind of chemicals that you eat. These days, people have the habit of taking medications even for easy conditions like headaches, toothaches and heartburn / acid reflux. This becomes a problem when we become too dependent on medications to cure these ailments without addressing the initial causes instead.

Of course, certain medications like antibiotics are helpful in exceptional situations. Even so, you should play it safe through proper diet and wearing the right clothing if you absolutely have to take such medication.

Be mindful that there are a myriad of ways to stop reoccurring yeast infections. It all boils down to starting the right habits.

If you’re fighting with reoccuring yeast infections, visit Alexis Ann’s site on natural remedies for yeast infections. She started writing about it because of her struggles with yeast infections and how she overcame them.

Related Posts:

Vaginal Thrush – What You Need to Know

Important Yeast Infection Symptoms Which You Ought To Know About

Contact Us

Disclaimer

Privacy Policy

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

How to Get Rid of a Yeast Infection Naturally and Safely in 3 Simple Steps

Is This The Best Yeast Infection Home Remedy?

Important Yeast Infection Symptoms Which You Ought To Know About

The Facts You Need to Know About Thrush Infection Treatments

Also known as a vaginal yeast infection, vaginal thrush can be an irritating, embarrassing, and even potentially harmful problem. Morever, it is a problem that 3 out of every 4 women will encoutner in their lifetime. Some are unlucky enough to face recurring infections over the course of many years. Too often women view the problem as merely superficial; and they treat their symptoms with creams, feminine products, and antibiotic drugs. Sometimes these “remedies” actually make the problem even worse.

First of all, I am not a doctor. I saw many of them in my attempts, to no avail, to treat my chronic yeast infections. I was forced to educate myself about vaginal health in order to take control of my life. I’m Megan Paul and my passion is helping women to avoid making the same mistakes I did. I used all the OTC creams, took antibiotics for weeks, and even saw three different doctors. These pathways only lead to temporary relief. Once I started to understand the cause of vaginal thrush, I was able to think proactively to effectively treat and prevent it for good.

The yeast known as Candida albicans is a fungus that squats in our mouths, vagina, and intestines. You can never completely eliminate it from your body, but you can keep it under control. Pregnancy, diabetes, chronic antibiotic usage, and immune suppression increase the likelihood that vaginal thrush will flare up. A few common causes are lack of vaginal hygiene, blood sugar abnormalities, hormonal changes, and any factor that might suppress immune function.

One way to avoid vaginal thrush is cleaning your vagina properly. Experts recommend that you try to keep your genitals clean and dry as much as possible. Using warm water to cleanse rather than harsh soaps also prevents the irritation that can lead to infections. Resist the temptation to use femine sprays, perfumes, or powders, which only cover up the problem temporarily.

Never use a feminine douche because it can flush out your natural “friendly bacteria,” which line the vagina and help to resist infections. Douching may provide psychological relief, giving a feeling of cleanliness, but the longer-term effects can be devasting to your vaginal health. Instead, prepare a shallow warm, not hot, bath and add 20 drops of tea tree oil and one cup of apple cider vinegar. Soak in the mixture for 10-20 minutes to thoroughly cleanse and naturally disinfect the area.

Your daily nutrition is one of the best guards against getting yeast infections. When you eat food it truly does affect your entire body. Your vagina is no exception. Unstable blood sugar, as seen in diabetics, enables yeasts and fungi to subsist and grow within the body. To counter this effect, you have to limit your intake of highly refined carbohydrates and sugars. Common examples are white table sugar, white bread, and white rice. Candida albicans, in particular, loves sugar. Replace these foods with stevia for sweetening and whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat breads. In addition, you can add foods that contain live cultures: yogurts, kefir, miso, sauerkraut, and even fermented cheeses. These replenish the “healthy bacteria” that inhabit the body and defend against the imbalance that can lead to vaginal thrush.

Vaginal thrush is an annoying and sometimes painful problem. You should not wait until you contract a yeast infection to start thinking proactively about making changes to your lifestyle. An ouce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure in this case. Once you learn how to quickly and easily treat and/or avoid vaginal thrush, you can finally take control of your reproductive health.

Learn more about vaginal thrush. But the fact of the matter is that especially in the case of vaginal thrush, it is actually quite common and quite easily treatable.

The article that follows will focus largely on vaginal thrush and will touch on topics like causes of thrush, thrush symptoms and the way to treat the problem.

Causes of Thrush

In a nutshell, thrush is a yeast infection that is basically brought on by the Candida fungus. Usually, Candida exists inside the vagina without leading to any issues but at times there is an imbalance which results in proliferation of the bacteria and ultimately in an infection.

Since the Candida fungus survives best in warm and damp areas of the body, it’s perhaps no surprise to learn that in addition to the vagina, it can additionally thrive in the mouth and groin. And with regards to male thrush it could also reside on the glans of the penis.

Thrush Symptoms

There are a number of vaginal thrush symptoms that are very easy to spot and those include:

1. Vaginal discharge that is generally thick and white, generally similar in appearance to cottage cheese. The discharge does not usually have an aroma but could nevertheless lead to discomfort to the vulva.

2. In a few cases, the vaginal discharge produced by thrush can be thin and watery, but it is still usually white in color.

3. Tenderness around the entrance of the vagina.

4. Discomfort in the course of sex – as thrush can be sexually transmitted (though not an STI), it is best to avoid sex while affected by the condition.

5. Inflammation and swelling around the vulva.

6. In a lot more severe cases, thrush can cause cracked skin around the vagina.

Thrush Treatment

Fortunately, vaginal thrush is quite easy to treat and while it has the potential to reoccur, it can be managed quite easily with one of the following strategies of thrush treatment:

1. Anti-yeast medicines applicable as cream or pessaries. These are available both by prescription and over the counter as well.

2. Oral tablets which are once again readily available both by prescription and over the counter.

In certain instances, vaginal thrush is so mild that it is hardly recognizable and can clear up of its own accord. Even so, in case you are afflicted by thrush frequently, it’s recommended that you go to your doctor for advice. This is also particularly the case if you’re pregnant. In addition, should you go through other symptoms not generally linked with thrush (for example unusual vaginal bleeding), then find medical help right away.

Are you suffering from thrush symptoms? You can be affected by an infection of this sort for a number of reasons. Often it can be down to your diet or otherwise a reaction to medication you have taken. You are advised to try and prevent issues of this kind affecting you in the first place, and, leading a balanced and healthy lifestyle is good way to ensure this.

This is especially important with regards to your intake of sugar. When you opt to consume too much of this it causes imbalances to arise internally. It’s best to minimize your consumption of foods and drinks that have a high sugar content and things like alcohol. This will make it easier to prevent symptoms of a yeast infection returning.

You can help your body to flush out toxins by making sure you keep your body hydrated by drinking enough water. This really helps your body to deal with problems like illness and infection. In addition it helps you to both feel and look better and has been known to have a very beneficial impact on the appearance of your skin and the working of your digestive system.

When you have a digestion that is healthy it also allows your body to be healthier and free from infection. Using a probiotic will help in this instance and can be added to a balanced diet to help you regulate existing bacteria internally. This means that you will maintain balance allowing your body to guard against illness and infection.

When this does not yield the results you were looking for then you can still do a lot to deal with the matter without visiting a doctor or interrupting your body’s natural rhythms by using drugs. Natural yogurt has proven useful in this regard. You can eat it for breakfast along with fruit and nuts or if you want the direct effects you may soak a tampon and apply, although if opting to do this make sure the yogurt is unsweetened.

You can use other anti bacterial and anti fungal options such as tea tree oil. This can be diluted and added to baths and this will quickly act to relieve any physical discomfort you feel in the area that has been affected. This is relatively inexpensive and has shown to yield successful results in treating problems of this sort.

Garlic is another option you have at your disposal. It helps to treat all sorts of problems and helps to ward off yeast. In addition it helps you to have stronger immune system and as lowered immunity is related to problems of this kind it is wise to consume more of this if you want to have healthy body that is free from illness.

If you do not like the taste of garlic then buy some odorless garlic capsules. You may take these in a similar fashion as you would a vitamin pill. This has been seen to be effective particularly when paired with other natural yeast infection treatment options.

Finding a natural yeast infection treatment is not difficult if you utilize the search capabilities on the Internet. Obviously, it seems, most or many women do not run into complications based on this self-treatment approach. Be that as it may, even with success, it is not a wise choice to proceed in that fashion. It is easy to make the wrong diagnosis, and that is due to a range of factors that are probably unknown to the person.

Remember what they say about lawyers? “If you act as your own lawyer, you have a fool for a client.” This also pertains to people who act as their own doctors. The symptoms of a thrush infection are similar to the symptoms of other medical conditions. They’re all kind of vague and nonspecific. Visit your local clinic or your health care provider. This is the smart thing to do in order to know for sure what your infection is and how to treat it. You will find some good details on the fungal infection at thrush.

If you are a woman with a thrush infection, there are different actions you should avoid. The main activity that you will not be able to engage in while treating for a vaginal thrush infection is sexual intercourse. Your vaginal tissues have already been compromised by the thrush infection and sexual intercourse could cause more damage. And then, there’s also the real possibility that it could hurt.

It’s important not to irritate this area more than it already is because there’s a very real chance you can spread the infection. If you are self-medicating, don’t use tampons for any reason. Use sanitary napkins instead. The problem with tampons is that they are very absorptive and could actually absorb the medication you are using to treat your vaginal thrush infection and hinder your treatment.

There is a group of antifungals called polyene antibiotics that help kill the fungal cells. Nystatin and Amphotericin B both are common medications that fall into this class. When faced with a life-threatening systemic thrush infection, Amphotericin B will commonly be used intravenously, but the side effects can be severe.

Systemic Candidiasis is life threatening and extreme. Esophageal, vaginal, and mucosal Candidiasis can be treated effectively with Nystatin. Azoles inhibit the 14-alpha demethylase, which produces ergosterol, thus resulting in the death of the fungal cell. Polyene anti-micotics are also ergosterol inhibitors and have a similar effect on the fungal cells. Fluconazole tablets is a potent antibiotic prescribed to combat the infection.

In addition to proper treatment for thrush infection, there are preventative measures that should be followed, especially if there has already been an infection. For instance, if your child has had oral thrush, then be sure to sterilize or wash anything that has come in contact with the child’s mouth.

To keep yourself free of a thrush infection if you are nursing an infant who has oral thrush, check your breast area and nipples each day. One preventative measure is to always wash the area with a diluted solution of live-culture yogurt. The best thing to do, as always, is simply visit your doctor and get their expert opinion on what you should do.

It has been the goal of this report to make you aware of the complexities of thrush infections. There is a lot more to them than just vaginal thrush infections that can be treated with a cream. An immune system that cannot do its job for whatever reason – cancer, chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS – is the cause of these more severe forms of Candidiasis. People who have had an organ transplant are especially at risk because, in order to avoid the rejection of their new organ, they have to be put on a course of drugs that suppress their immune system. Another group that falls into the at-risk classification is chemotherapy patients.

Related Posts:

Vaginal Thrush – What You Need to Know

The Symptoms And Treatment Of Thrush

Why An Untreated Yeast Infection Can Be Dangerous

Recurring Yeast Infections 101 – How to Deal With Reoccurring Yeast Infections

Home Yeast Infection Healing Ideas

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Home Remedies for Yeast Infections

Which Cure For Yeast Infection In Women Is Most Effective?

Home Yeast Infection Healing Ideas

Why Yeast Infection in Men Can Cause Unforeseen Misery

Is This The Best Yeast Infection Home Remedy?

Thrush Symptoms – Do You Suffer From These Symptoms?
