BILL SPEIDEL’S UNDERGROUND TOUR is a leisurely, guided walking tour beneath Seattle’s sidewalks and streets.

While you roam the subterranean passages that once were the main roadways and first-floor storefronts of old downtown Seattle, Tour Guides regale you with humorous stories our pioneers didn’t want you to hear. It’s history with a twist!

The tour begins with a seated introduction inside Doc Maynard’s Public House, a restored 1890s saloon. Then you walk outside through historic Pioneer Square to three different sections of Underground—about three blocks in all.

Be prepared for the underground landscape to be moderately rugged: you’ll encounter six flights of stairs, uneven terrain and spotty lighting. Dress for the weather—and leave your spike heel shoes at home!

Phillip Island presents a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the world’s smallest penguins. These small animals make their nightly traverse from the ocean to land and give adults and kids a fun-filled night of animal-watching. Even in summer months, the temperatures can be cooler so make sure to bring extra layers and even some blankets to use during the wait.

Get Your Chocolate Fix at Granja-xocolateria La Pallaresa in Barcelona, Spain. This old fashioned chocolateria, located just off La Rambla, serves fresh churros along with rich, puddinglike (and not overly sweet) chocolate to dip them in. Not interested in chocolate? You’ll also find wonderful pastry and Crema Catalana (similar to creme brûlée ). The atmosphere here is very casual, and Granja-xocolateria makes the perfect place to stop after a long day of sightseeing. Kids and parents will both be comfortable here (and what child would not be on their best behavior with the promise of churros and chocolate.)
