Seriously I need this: I don’t want to remember that large number and check if it has increased to understand a new mail arrived or not. Until the day browsers support out of the window notifications, I want GMail to support a way to indicate that a new mail arrived or not via taskbar title.

It could be something like this:
Initial state: Inbox (4018) …
A new mail arrived: Inbox (4019*) …
Window is focused for N seconds: Inbox (4019) …

UPDATE: Thanks to priority inbox, this is no longer a problem for me!

Early Days

I think everything started from the day that I started to disassemble my toys. DC toy motor was my favourite. I started to dissemble my toys and tried to create new ones. Especially toy cars used to contain a lot of gears and dc toy motors. My DC adapter and my DC toy motors were things that I spent my day with. Then I started to hear about game consoles and commodore. I cried a lot for a commodore but then I only get a hand held tetris :) (Around 1992 when I was 9 y/o). There was not much to do with tetris and after a while I get my first 8 bit Atari game console (around 1994). It made me busy for a while but still it was not giving me chance to modify things and come with something new. After that I get my next 16 bit game console and that was the time when I met with Mario Brothers(around 1996). Not so much later I got a hand-held Nintendo and that was the time I learned about Fifa series of EA Sports, I guess it was Fifa 97. During those years I was always longing for a PC but my father was refusing me in case I stop studying my lessons.

First 3D Game

After a year, a friend of mine showed me his PC and Fifa 98, that was the moment I saw a 3D game for the first time. When I saw Fifa 98 I completely lost myself with its fascinating graphics, I was like in heaven as someone who lived in 2D world till then. I wanted nothing but to have a PC but still no chance. I couldn’t get a PC but I got a Sega game console, but it was still working with game cards, it was not even using CDs.

First Computer

During my middle school and high school even though I did not have a computer I was always buying PC magazines, and trying to learn about computers. I knew about DOS and Windows 95 but didn’t know about Linux or GNU. Then in 08.07.2000 I got my firstcomputer, it was my second year in high school and I very clearly remember that day. I couldn’t sleep before night we were going to get my first computer. It was a Compaq Presario PC and it had Intel Pentium III 550Mhz CPU, 128Mb Ram, 20Gb HDD, and it was coming with Windows 98. (It is exactly same as seen on the right.) That day is the day my life has changed. My dreams came true, I was going to be able play latest games and even create my own programs and web sites. I got a 56Kbps dial-up account and I was able surf from home. My first games were Fifa 2000 and Need For Speed.

First Programming, First Entrepreneurship

Not so much later I got bored of playing games, and I heard about PHP. PHP was the first programming language I started to play with. I was able code pretty complex portal components around 2001. I was reading about PHP a lot and I was inspecting lots of example codes from all over the web. I learned about MySQL and SQL, I also tried ASP but I liked PHP more. After a while in 2001 I created a complete web portal for the city I live in. (Thanks to www.archive.org: www.elbistannet.com) I was planning make money via getting advertisement from local stores. (As can be seen from the right side panel of the archived page, that section was reserved for ads.) That portal had game reviews that I write, some computer related how-to topics like fdisk, cd cloning etc, some local news, polls, mail subscription, free mail sending service, it had a forum that I setted up one of those ready to use forums (I guess it was PHPBB), and it had some other components that I can’t remember very clearly. With a friend of mine, we bought a spray and sprayed the web address of the portal around the city, I think it was getting a few hundreds of visitors in a month which doesn’t sound much now, but around those days people didn’t have many computers or internet in my city. I was able log IPs of visitors and I was able watch my visitors. I knew about changing IPs and I implemented a timer so I could use it for my polls, since I knew that people can delete their cookies. It was a very primitive way of watching visitors but that was my own algorithm and that was what was capable of during that time. Anyway I couldn’t make my portal make money, I just didn’t go and ask stores/shops if they want to advertise in my portal, I though I should concentrate on my university exams. And also I tried other programming languages like C and VB, I even had a very useful VB application that can log my dial-up internet usage, since dial-up was quite expensive and I needed to be careful with using it (Hmm I think I was using winsock to detect becoming online). Finally I was feeling just like I was dissembling my own toys and trying to come up with new ones…

University

Around those days I was preparing for university exams and my only aim was computer engineering. From like 1995 while I was 12-13 y/o I knew about computer engineering and I have always dreamed about it and targeted it, even though my parents were advising me to become a doctor, I never liked that idea. In 2001 I took the university exams. My results was not good enough to get a computer engineering department since I used computer more than pencil and paper, then I decided to code less and wait and study for 1 more year and try again. In 2002 I got the exam again and among around 1.5 million students I was in like first 5000 and that meant that I could get computer engineering study in one of the preeminent universities. So I was going school as who had already know about PHP, ASP, VB, MySQL, SQL, and even about Linux. First year was English preparation year, we just studied English for one year since the department was %100 English. It was very useful for both my English and getting used to to a new city. Following 4 years passed quickly and I learned a lot of things about computers and programming and had great memories. Most of the time I get good results from core computer science classes but my grades were terrible when it comes to classes like history or Turkish literature. But again I always targeted getting enough results to pass classes. I never had great exam results. On the other hand I had better successes like getting good internships or successful projects.

Working Years and Now

I worked part time and as freelance programmer during my university years. But my best working experience during university years was my internship in Germany. I worked three months in Dresden, Germany for SeeReal. Later on I worked part time for AGC. Right after I graduated I started working for Innova, and finally since May 2009 I am working for IBM. Life is fast, by the time it has been a bit more than 10 years in front of computers, 16 years if I count game consoles in…

Just recently I have been to Tioman Island in Malaysia (also check http://wikitravel.org/en/Tioman). I went there with a friend (Mehmet) and stayed 2 days. We went there from Singapore and the trip was almost unplanned. First we took bus to Johor Bahru from Bugis, Singapore (paid 5 SGD) at 9am, then from Johor Bahru we took another bus to Mersing (paid 20 RM from Johor Bahru bus terminal). In the middle of the trip bus had some trouble and we waited for a mechanic and it was around 4pm when we reached to Mersing bus terminal. Bus driver knew that we were going to Tioman Island and showed us the agency right there which was Bluewater agency. Thinking we were late already we just get in agency. Agency told us almost all hotels are booked and they have only a few available rooms. One was in Nipah and the other was in Panuba. A room in Nipah without air-conditioner was 60RM, and 165+20RM in Panuba. The room in Panuba was the most expensive among others since it has TV, air-conditioner, mini fridge and 2 double beds. Also they provided our round-trip ferry ticket to the island. It was 370RM in total for 2 days. I am sure a more planned holiday would cost much less. Ferry trip took like 2 hours to island. Nipah was silent with a nice beach, Panuba was a higher class place comparing to Nipah in terms of residence, but I think beach in Nipah was better. So first day we spent in Nipah then second day in Panuba. Although almost noting was planned, it was definitely fun… We did snorkeling, kayaking (or canoeing) and swam till we were exhausted…

To Imagine;
First of all, need to imagine, how well you imagine the moment that will come to action, the better you do when the time comes…
To imagine, so to imagine more… As if the action, that is going to come to life, is actually happening at the moment. Repeating continuously… In the degree of a disease… Must lose himself on the road, street, bus, subway, must forgot the existence of others around him. Must go so in deep in thinking and imagining, his gestures, facial expressions and heartbeat rate must change. Sometimes they must become delusions and must bother him…
Think of a football player about to go for the free-kick. He puts the ball, he goes back, he checks the referee, he looks at the ball, and the goal. Right at that moment time stops for him, stadium becomes silent… He starts to imagine how he will kick, how the ball will go… When he hears the whistle he goes for his imagination… If the ball goes to net, right at that moment what makes him happy is not scoring a goal, but it is that what he imagined came true, rest of the happiness comes later… It is a part of his daily life, the imagination that he has at that moment… He imagines that moment while he is driving a car, walking on the street or while he is shopping… The more this imagination is part of his life the better he scores at free-kicks…
So we all know that we are going to have some opportunities in our lives, it is up to us how well we will use the when time comes. The more you imagine that moments as if they are really happening, the ready you become, the better you do!

I am not using Google Wave, and currently even if I would have enough contacts I am not finding it worth using it at the moment. The topic is actually not Google Wave it self, but what it thought me by having some invitations…

I see this picture every morning (UPDATE: now it is removed, but it stayed there for a long time), it is standing in front of office in the building. It says “By 2010, the amount of digitized information in the world will double every 11 hours.”

Could it be real? If it is 11 hours in 2010 then it should be let’s say; 20 hours now, wow! So in 2010 the amount of digitized information will double the double less then a day right? Is it going to increase exponential, is this what we are suppose to understand? Let’s be optimistic and assume it is going to increase linear (at least in 2010). Do you think companies those are somehow involved in producing storage media can double their capacities in a day?

No matter what, it seems storing the information doesn’t seem to be a problem at the moment (at least no one is concerned so far I know). But managing is. Without an accurate search engine I think the web couldn’t be such attractive for everyone.

But for me, nowadays, it is not important how the information is stored or how it is managed or searched… How it flows around in the web is the important point for me. How fast, how often, from where to where…

I realized how fast in fact the information is flowing in the web by my previous post. As you know ‘Google Wave’ is pretty hot keywords nowadays. Just after I made my post telling I have accounts I get many requests. Normally my blog is visited a few times a day. I was expecting the same number of visitors after I made my post and maybe a couple of requests from visitors. But this time it was interestingly different and unexpected. Just after I made the post I started to get comment notification mails. First I though these comments belong to some ‘Google Wave’ account hungry bots which have in fact have my blog address in their database, crawling my site often and found something useful and made the comments… I carefully checked comments if they sound bot language or not but they seemed quite human written. But how fast you guys made those comments? Were you sitting in front of my blog page and hitting refresh every other second? (Despite all those pinging/notification mechanisms of blogs it felt people could not be aware so fast…)

After getting surprised for a while I remembered Google’s recent results feature (Search for something and then click ‘Show options’ then click the ‘Latest’ from the left, now twitter and others are there too). I searched for Google Wave and YES my blog address with previous post was there… But still I wanted to confirm. First I send invitations to all comment owners then I send them email asking how they had find my blog. Majority of them replied with an unexpected response: Twitter (Only one of them said that he has used recent results from Google). Yes, I made a tweet after the post, mentioned my blog address and forgot it at all… I don’t have many followers, if I don’t count fake accounts, and comment owners are not from followers anyway. But apparently people are using Twitter search a lot and getting very up to date results, and now Google supports real time Twitter search results too… This was a nice experience for me to see how people are more connected to each other wherever they are on earth regardless of time…

Internet is evolving faster… Number of mobile devices, in fact the number of mobile devices which can really! consume the web is increasing rapidly… Applications are moving to browser, PCs are getting lighter and more mobile…

YES, by 2010, the amount of digitized information in the world will double every 11 hours, and the digitized information will flow around by doubling its flow speed in every 11 hours…

So the question is; you surfed on ocean enough, can you swim in a fast river?

Innova is definitely one of the best software companies in Turkey. Innova has software solutions in wide variety of sectors. From banking to manufacturing, from communication to automotive. Government, military, oil, energy and more… Innova has been awarded many times… But for me most important thing about Innova is that I started my career in this company. Although I worked for AGC Software as a part time employee during my last year in school Innova can be considered my first real work experience in the wild world of software. I joined Innova right after I graduate, and today Innova and Innova employees have great impact on me. I started working as .NET developer with Software Engineer title in August 2007 and leaved the company in April 2009 for my current job. 1 year and 8 months…

Right after I joined Innova I started working for kiosk solutions section. The project was for one the biggest banks of Turkey; Akbank. The project was absolutely innovative; credit kiosk… An award winning one… Although project was about to over, I got chance to learn lots of things. I worked for this kiosk project for 4 months. But for me the biggest experience came by multimedia street phone… All the hardware and software R&D belongs to Innova engineers; here is a quote from Innova web page;

Turkey’s new-generation payphones will be offering users on the street a host of innovative new features such as video telephony, internet access, e-mail, instant photography, SMS messaging and city life information services. Every kiosk will also serve as a hotspot for Wi-Fi internet access.

Among the hardware features with which the kiosks will be equipped are touchscreens, instant access function keys, keyboard and pinpad for the secure entry of passwords etc. There will be a thermal printer capable of printing out receipts for transactions that are paid for by credit card. Users will also be able to store copies of e-mails and other materials that they download from the internet on their own storage devices attachable to the kiosks’ media card readers and USB ports.

This is the visible side of the product and absolutely creative… But I and a couple of colleagues worked for the server side of the project. These phones can be managed, monitored and customizable from a single web portal software, and that is where I and web team have taken place… Simple tasks like restarting whole machine, sending simple commands like volume adjustment, updating whole software, changing user interface and content, adding advertisements in a schedule are features of the portal. And of course inventory management, log and report viewing, diagnostics, tariff management and many basic features are included…

Thanks to Innova and Innova employees especially to Orhan Eksi as project manager and Ahmet Ozturk, Erol Ozturk, Gokmen Bulut, Sadik Umurlu, Selim Aytuna, Serhat Ozgel, Ufuk Arslan as great engineers from istanbul office and many others from both Istanbul and Ankara offices… We rocked!!!…
