NSIncrementalStore is perhaps the best-kept secret in iOS 5. It doesn’t show up in any advertising materials, barely rates a passing mention in WWDC tech talks, and has the world’s shortest programming guide, at only a few pages. It is so well hidden that I only discovered it very recently. But it’s easily my favorite new iOS 5 feature.

What will our (future) interfaces feel like?

These days it’s about the content. Design starts with the content. Language is the navigation. The interface is words. We’re advised to choose them carefully. Copywriting is now where the interface lives or perishes. We can’t trust those devious icons or that friendly, yet somewhat unclear language from the Web 2.0 days — we need to be clear and say exactly what we mean. The three most important things here are: Clarity, clarity, clarity.

Yale Discovers a Fungus That Eats Plastic

Scientists have not found a single way to break down polyurethane--luckily, nature has found a way on its own. Yale scientists recently found a fungus in the Amazonian rainforest that naturally eats polyurethane.

This is the first fungus species, identified by the Yale researchers as Pestalotiopsis microspore, which exclusively subsists on polyurethane. It can also grow in an anaerobic (air-less) environment, which will hopefully allow it to take root in the deepest regions of our trash heaps.

Our Galaxy Has at Least 100 Billion Planets

The survey results show that our galaxy contains, on average, a minimum of one planet for every star. This means that it's likely there are a minimum of 1,500 planets within just 50 light-years of Earth.
