Words. Hello, we’re Gummo a full service advertising agency from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. We’d like to welcome you to our brand new second-hand office; a living, working testament to the power of ‘reduce, reuse recycle’.

As we’re only going to be here temporarily, we decided to fill it with second hand things that we could customise ourselves.

All the furniture came from the Dutch eBay, Marktplaats, charity shops and whatever was left over at the old office.

Along the way we made some new friends, ate some tasty Moroccan food and developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of Amsterdam’s second hand shops.

All our new old stuff was taken to be spray painted with a special environmentally friendly grey paint to conform with the theme (and colour scheme) we’d developed with innovative Dutch architects i29.

It’s designed to reflect Gummo’s personality and design philosophy – simple, uncomplicated, no-nonsense, yet unquestionably stylish with a twist of humour. And as environmentally friendly as possible.

For us, a well-designed office space means happy employees, and happy employees create the best work. With a pool table, shuffleboard table, showers, washer/dryer and other amenities on site for our employees, they can be comfortable at work, enjoy their time here and have the freedom to explore their professional and personal passions.

Our office design draws from two sources of inspiration: the space itself and the Springbox brand.

Springbox is housed in two downtown Austin buildings that were built in the 1870s, which we connected during one of our many expansions. In their time, the limestone walls have withstood a variety of different guests, including the Austin chamber of commerce, an art gallery, boutique retail stores and, most recently, Johnny Knoxville. Our interior designer, Tamie Glass wanted to evolve the aesthetic of the space while staying true to existing design elements – the bare stone, brick walls and wood floors. The original elements combined with sleek, modern accents give us a history to build on and a future to look forward to.

Knowing that an office space gives everyone who walks through the doors visual cues about the company and the people who work there, we also wanted to make sure that the space matched our brand. The modern décor, the carpet tiles patterns that allude to pixels, splashes of our trademark orange on the walls and the distinct absence of cubicles let our visitors, clients and employees know that Springbox and our work is open, creative and innovative.

Words. Frost* is an independent creative studio based in Sydney. We are an interdisciplinary creative studio working across a variety of media for a diverse range of international clients. Solving problems is what we do best – listening, getting to the heart of a problem and developing effective solutions that surprise and excite in equal measure.

Our Surry Hills studio is located in a renovated warehouse that was originally used to store wool. It faces out onto two streets, with natural light pouring in from both ends. The studio is always buzzing with the excitement of new projects and clients and visitors coming and going. Our tall white walls are covered with reference material and work-in-progress, usually surrounded by small teams of staff.

We have a series of freestanding desks and everybody sits together – regardless of position or discipline. Flexibility of the workstations is made possible by mobile pedestals which contain peoples’ personal effects and current work. These can be easily wheeled to another desk, enabling us to configure teams depending on projects and interest areas.

Our studio has two freestanding forms for private client meetings and conference calls – an embryonic shaped structure named the “Pod” and a smaller cube-shaped meeting room. We also have a Café area, where everyone tends to congregate at the end of the day and a Library at the back of studio where people can escape their computers and feel inspired.

Words. Campaign Monitor is a small software company right near the beach in southern Sydney. We build email marketing software for designers and their clients and are lucky enough to have lots of passionate customers.

In our experience, the ideal office environment is about finding the right balance between socializing and getting stuff done. Too much of one or the other has its downsides, but there are some fundamentals you can put in place to help get that balance right. It should be easy for everyone to remove any distractions, put their head down and get into the zone. Just as importantly, they should be able to take a break, hang out with other members of the team and generally switch off.

To make this happen, we teamed up with the same architects who designed our last office and gave them this simple brief:

1. Closed offices for everyone.
2. Large dining area where we can all eat lunch together.
3. Enough space to cater for our ping pong obsession.

After a few iterations the new design really took shape. The architect came up with the idea of having a huge open area right down the middle of the space containing the kitchen, dining, library, gaming area and lounges. Flowing either side of this open space would be two corridors of offices. They managed to fit 40 private offices into the new design, more than enough for the 20 staff in our Sydney office with plenty of room to grow.

For us, private offices were non-negotiable. Over the years we’ve had fully open plan, only offices and a combination of both. In our experience, closable offices for each team member are by far the best configuration for a software company.

At Campaign Monitor we have a simple rule: If my door is shut, don’t interrupt me.

It’s common sense anyway, but making this clear to everyone has made a big difference. If you want to get stuff done, shut the door and you won’t be bothered.

Goal behind our space: The biggest challenge was budget. We had $500,000 to create our space. Our old space was a 2 million dollar job. It was PDO’s goal to be as creative as they could to make the new space on the reduced budget look as good as our old space. It still had to have that WOW factor.
