So, November came... and it came slowly and quietly. I found it this morning showing off over the fading bushes in my backyard, sitting upon barely awoken leaves and branches. It spread its whiteness proudly and carefree - magnificent, silent and still winter soldier that overlayed outside in its cyclopean cloak. I wanted to say "hi", but its stillness and quietness were too beautiful to spoil. So I left it at rest in its grace and tranquility, that noiseless conqueror of sleepy northern fields.

Jamaica! We did not plan it at all, but it turned out to be all that I wished for and more. Worth of visiting, worth of exploring, worth of your time for sure! Jamaican people are amazing, there is no other word to explain it and describe it better. They are so giving, happy, always in a good mood. At one moment Marijan asked me - "Do they have to sing? Is that in their job description?" No! They love life! And it is so obvious.
Jamaica is beautiful. Ocean is warm and so lively. Colors of the water are stunning. The sand is hot and fine, sun is bright and high, palms are huge and sound amazing when it's windy. I seriously enjoyed my time in Jamaica. I would definitely come back. I wouldn't mind spending few more weeks on that stunning Caribean island. Good food, good vibes, good beach life - what else would you wish for?!

FLAT LAY photography is super popular among bloggers, instagramers and pinterest users lately. My first attempts of taking flat lay photos were kind of a small disaster and I was never satisfied with the outcome nor did it look like all those beautiful flatlays I would stumble upon on blogs and Instagram. I was disappointed and thinking how I'm never gonna get that flat lay thing... But every start is not the easy one. Especially when it is about photography and following the photography trends that we so want to be part of.
I am not saying that I mastered the flat lay photography. I am not saying that I am a photography expert or anything like that. And the photo above is probably blurred and imperfect enough to prove that. But I feel confident enough to share with everyone what works for me, a complete photo amateur, when it is about taking the flat lay photographs.

The photo posted above is one of my recent photos that I published on my INSTAGRAM, and a reason why it is so grainy and blurred is mostly because of my poorly attempt to download it from my INSTAGRAM account which is almost a mission impossible due to all the restrictions of photo downloading from that platform, which I will never be able to forgive them!

So, here's what works for this girl when it is about flat lay photography:

HAVE A THEME - the idea or the theme of the photo is important no matter if you are taking a flat lay or any other photo. It is a story behind the photo, and it is as important as the layout or setting or lighting or anything that I will list below. Pick a theme and stick to it. Taking some random items around you might create a beautiful flat lay, but it is more likely those will just be a bunch of things that just do not go together or they will create a confusion and have nothing in common that would connect them into a story. If you are creating a fashion outfit flat lay, there is no need to add cat food into the picture, right? You get the point..

NATURAL LIGHT AND THE POWER OF A WHITE BACKGROUND - before anything else, pick a good place to take the photo at, as well as the good background on which you will arrange your items. Natural light is the best light to use. If you do not posses any photographic equipment to boost it, indirect natural light will do well. I usually take my photos a bit away from my studio window, but still close enough to have enough light without any big shadows falling onto my items. And I am a huge fan of white backgrounds - they make all the items stand out and the photo looks very bright and minimalistic which is another big trend in photography these days. If you do not prefer white backgrounds, at least try to pick a solid colour one or very simply patterned, because a pattern that is too strong and occupied will just distract from the items you are photographing and make things more complicated when it is about editing the photo afterwards. Lots of people pick desk surfaces, sheets, white carpets, light marble countertops or similar simple backgrounds, no need to invest in something huge and expensive - use what you have but use it smart!

COLOURS THAT GO ALONG - colours are fun, colourful photos are beautiful, but you do not have to have the entire colour palette in your photo to make it look pretty and interesting. Personally, two or three colours turned out to work best for me. I prefer to go with white or other neutral colour as main and prevailing in the photo, spiced up with one or two contrast colours to make it more interesting. I work mostly with white, black and blue, sometimes green. But black and white are the colours that I end up with in most of my flat lay photos. Few different shades of one colour work great, too. There are many colour combination examples that professionals came up with and that can be found on Pinterest, that might help you decide on what colours to put together and include in your flat lay setting.

CENTRAL POINT - very important if you want to have a nice, appealing and symmetric photo. By a central point, I don't mean you have to centre all your items in the middle of the photo. No. I am saying that you have to have one or two items that are star(s) of the entire layout and then other items to accompany it/them. You can have your layout in the corner of a photo, or taking 2/3 of the photo or in the centre if you really want it. But deciding on what items in the photo are central points is crucial, because you do not want your flat lay to look scattered and unorganized.

DON'T MAKE IT TOO CROWDED - it is not about quantity, it is about quality. There is no need for 10 items to make a flat lay, sometimes even two are enough if picked wisely.

ITEM THAT IS CUT OFF IS FINE! - though your jeans are great from top to bottom, even if you show just one part of them it will still be ok and everyone will get how awesome they are. Play with the setting of your flat lay items - show few of them completely, but leave some cut off the picture. It will make photo look more spontaneous and off-the-cuff.

PLANT IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA - or part of the plant, like a branch, or a flower, or just half of the plant and its planter... Whatever you prefer. It ads the spark of liveliness to the stillness of the layout and can be such a beautiful detail to make your outfit or desktop or food arrangement looking prettier.

SQUARE FRAME - is something I always think about when taking flat lay photos. Most phones have it already integrated in camera settings because of the crazy popularity of Instagram that allows you to publish only square frame photos. But even if you visualize your items within a certain, invisible square, it might make things easier for you when arranging them and make them look symmetrically in the very end.

SHOOT FROM ABOVE / BIRD'S-EYE VIEW - it is the most popular way of taking flat lay photos and the most effective one. A stool or a chair can be very helpful when taking photos in this way.

EDIT YOUR PHOTOS / FILTERS AND PRESETS - we all use photo filters to edit our photos, let's be honest. Even professional photographers use photoshop to perfect their captures. For all of us who are not masters of Photoshop, there are so many presets on Instagram and apps like VSCO or AFTERLIGHT that can make your pretty flat lay look even prettier. My advise is to use same or similar filters/presets all the time, just to keep things unified and consistent. It also helps you create your own certain recognizable style.

LOOK FOR ITHE NSPIRATION - on Instagram, Pinterest, VSCO or any other photo sharing platform. If you would like to create a certain flat lay but you are not sure how to do it right, there is nothing wrong in exploring photos that already exist out there. Just bare in mind that noone likes copy cats... Be inspired by other people's work, but make sure to do it in your own way.

Meals that are super fast and easy peasy to make are best for the breakfast. If you would like to escape same old cereal or ham'n'eggs, the perfect alternative is - a salad. There are tons of salad recipes, basically whatever can go in one, depending on one's taste. This one is my favourite for an easy spring Sunday morning breakfast, when I have a bit more time to spend in the kitchen than in the rest of the week.
It doesn't have a certain name because I prepared it one morning with the stuff I found in my fridge, but it was so tasty and delicious that I am making it now at least once a week.

But we can name it - AVOCADO EGG SALAD - just because of the two main ingridients that go in it.

It's a must try!

AVOCADO EGG SALAD - QUICK RECIPE
(serves 1 if main / serves 2 if side dish)

INGRIDIENTS:
- 3 hard boiled eggs
- 1/2 avocado
- 2 green onions
- 1 spoon olive oil - salt & pepper

WHAT TO DO:
- peel of the eggs and cut them in pieces. Cut the half of avocado in small cubes. Chop the green onions. Throw it all into a bowl. Add one spoon of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well. (If you like a stronger taste, add one spoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice!) And you're done :)

The same way this snow today is totally breaking spring rules here in Alberta, I am breaking the rules by posting the Friday post on Wednesday. I woke up this morning and it was almost 10cm of snow already outside. I was so thankful for being off work today and staying at home. It is so white outside, it hurts the eyes... I digged my winter sweater out of the back of the closet and it felt so good! I enjoyed every single drop of my hot morning coffee and silently cried over the fact that back home it's almost 30 degrees... summer time... and I am burried in snow. (sigh.)

BLOOMING INSIDE

Well, yesterday was my 30th birthday. I do not feel like 30 at all. I feel like someone decided to give me the age that is considered to be appropriate for this period of my life, but I personally do not think it fits me at all. I do not know what age would I put myself into if I could choose one, I would prefer to be ageless. Just be and just exist without pressure of the age and the general opinion of what my life in a certain stage should look like. I am actually very satisfied with how my life is and what I am now. They say, well - lots of people say that thirdies are the best years of a woman's life from many aspects. I do not know; maybe they are, maybe they're not. I am entering this stage of my existence with no expectations at all. I did not get up in the morning trying to find a new wrinkle on my face or a grey strike in my hair. I made my morning coffee as usual and went to work. I did not spend my day thinking of what I've missed to do in life by now. I was thinking about my family and friends back home who I would want to have by my side for my birthday, for every birthday in my life forever; but not for celebrating or crying over my age or the time that is passing by, but just for enjoying the moment of being together. I was not questioning my opinions or decisions or how I was in my early twenties, trying to figure out what exactly changed ever since. I know things changed, but what is the point in comparing and thinking what could've been done differently? If I did one single thing in a different way, I would be someone else. I can only go forward, keep the wheels turning, sometimes be absolutely sure in my decisions, sometimes flip a coin to pick the turn on the next crossroad. Make mistakes, do the right things, but keep going without turning back... because going forward is the only way. No flowers bloom if they stay under ground. Going forward, going up... that turns your seed into a bloom.

1 - Belgrade, Autokomanda appartment, our favorite during our 2 years long working period in Serbia. It had amazing view and was absolutely gorgeous! This day, I remember, I stayed home instead going to work. I was so sick, I had a fever and did not feel well at all. I was lying on the huge couch in the living rom, enjoying the sun rays that were shifting through the blinds. The afternoon light was just perfect and it really eased my pain. I miss those beautiful days!

2 - first ladder that Marijan made when he opened his Etsy shop, BIRCH & BEARD. It was several months ago, October 2014, when I finally talked him into opening the store on Etsy. Let's just say - he's glad that he did it!

3 - I do not know why I like this blueberries photo that much. I know I was home alone that day, it was my day off. I took the camera and played with it. Nothing spectacular, but that is the first time ever I photographed blueberries. And ate the entire container of them right afterwards.

4 - I remember walking this botanical park in Zagreb with my best friend Ariana while she was visiting us during her short business trip to the Croatia capital. I remember the sound of the leaves under my feet on that sunny autumn day and how magical everything was. That was the first time that I+ve ever visited that park after 7 years of living in that city!

5 - Edmonton downtow right from the balcony of our first apartment here in Edmonton. Absolutely stunning during the night when all the lights in the buildings are on and the sound of a busy traffic fills the air...

6 - My favourite position when on the beach - in the hamock, looking at the sea, smelling the salt in the air and soaking up the sun. Oh, home!

7 - First real Halloween in Canada! I was simply enchanted by the beauty of these tiny white pumpkins! The wierdest thing - they lived until 6 weeks ago!

8 - My favorite photo of Koli Bado. Captured one lazy morning while I was hesitating to get out of the bed and she was patiently waiting for me.

9 - Lake Louise... Breathtaking place, one of my favorite ever seen! I could not believe the color of the water and how magical it looks! Definitely a must see!

10 - A photo that basically tells the story of how our Banff vacation this winter looked like - wandering around with camera in our hands, zipped up and posing!

11 - When home alone and bored, I like to play with camera. This was maybe a week ago, right after I've got this gorgeous orchid from Marijan. I hope they live! (because I am terribly bad in keeping my plants alive!)

12 - My first dip into Pacific! Beautiful Vancouver...

13 - Picking pears from Marijan's backyard in Croatia. They smelled so good! Ended up as the best marmelade ever!

14 - a tiny slice of Banff prairie from this winter. Also, my first sledge ride in life! Loved it! The air was crisp and windchill made me shiver so bad, but hot cocoa and heavenly tasty marshmallows baked over the open fire shortly after the ride made it better.

15 - the game of the shadows in our dining room in the old apartment. The beauty of simple things.

16 - a small part of the biggest bouquette of roses that I've ever got! Marijan...

17 - The photo of the first snowy day last year, on my way to work. It was so milk white and soft. One day after it was already big piles of muddy ice everywhere...

18 - I really do not know how, but my sister managed to mail me some home dried fruits and treats from back home. It was a real feast for me and it eased my homesickness at least fo a day or two. I wanted each bite to last forever!

19 - Just like the blueberries, there is something about the watermellon, too.

20 - a view that I was waking up to every morning during our winter vacation in Banff. The pine trees covered in snow, mountains in the back and the soft morning light... Memories for life!

FRIDAY FLAT LAY

It feels like a throwback day today, a throwback to times not so long ago when we cruised the Western Canada roads, enjoying and loving the summer in north. I am silently and slowly going through the photos taken along the way, sucking the chunks of a juicy blood-red watermelon, having my friend's tea steaming into my face and mixing with the clean and crisp scent of a table candle. I am such a daydreamer, memories chaser and quiet restless mind, my dear.

HOW I FIND "ME TIME" WHEN THERE IS NO TIME

It is so common these days that we have time for everything and everyone except for ourselves. And though "putting yourself first" may sound a bit selfish and careless, the fact is that if you are not satisfied and happy with yourself, the chances are that you're not gonna be happy with anyone or anything else. Having no time for yourself can seriously effect every aspect of your everyday life. But how to find time to devote to your own self if you are buried in obligations towards others, your job, taking care of your home, socializing, and tons of other things that do not allow you to be alone with yourself?!

Your soul is like a flower, it needs certain things to keep it growing and expanding and being healthy and pretty!
I have to be honest, that is something that I am desperately trying to solve for myself. Every day I have a feeling like I have less and less free time that I can use for myself only, for my soul and my own being. Like so many of other people, I wake up in the last moment still tired from the previous day, get myself ready and go to work, going home after half of the day dealing with other people needs, spend few hours before bed time over the stove and over the computer working on my designs, sometimes doing the extra cleaning that I did not manage to do on my day off, sometimes visiting friends or having them over, or sometimes shopping for groceries or anything that involves going out of the house because there is something that just needs to be done. Even my days off work are not so much relaxing because of spending hours on Skype, trying to stay in touch with my family and friends back home, cleaning and getting things in order all over the house, more work on my designs, more cooking and more so many other things that have a MUST BE DONE TODAY tag. So, where and how to be with yourself in all that mess?
It's not easy. It takes a different approach, a bit of changing your state of mind and adjustment.

This is where I am trying to find the ME TIME when there is no time for it:

CLEANING
- can be bored and pain in the bum, the very thought of cleaning when you have a day off and could spend it on so many other fun things can be very discouraging for even starting it, but it just has to be done or .... you don't even want to think of what could happen. Cleaning used to make me angry and nervous because I had a feeling of waisting time. But you cannot live in a dirt, because mess that might surround you can't do good to you. That is why I started to see cleaning time as kind of a me time. I usually do it when I am home alone. So while doing the cleaning, I think of the things that I usually think of only when relaxing - like planning the next vacation or thinking of something that is bothering me at the moment and trying to figure out the reason and the solution, or thanking the Universe for every recent opportunity or good thing that happened lately, or talking to my soul and getting things in mind straighten. The best thing about it is that time flies! Much much faster then if you are cleaning and thinking how there's still an entire room yet to be done!

LUNCH TIME AT WORK
- It is not just me, I know bunch of other people who use their lunch time at work as their "work-while-eating" time. Which is not good. Lunch breaks and coffee breaks at work should be something that completely takes you away from whatever your work is for those 15 or 30 minutes. Your brain needs a rest, you need to fill your batteries not just with food, but with positive energy for your soul, too. I used to go for my lunch breaks taking my iPad with me and doing whatever needs to be done for my side job while trying to finish my pasta. So unhealthy and wrong! That break usually would not do anything for me, it's just like not having it at all! When I realized that, I decided to change the game. I would force myself to leave my workplace physically, leaving all the things that could engage me into the work during the break - behind. Sometimes I would just sit in the food court by the window, watching the snow falling and thinking of whatever but the work. Or I would go and walk the mall and try some things on or go and smell some nice lotions and soaps as a first-aid aromatherapy to relax me a bit. You should do anything, ANYTHING on your work break but work! And I promise you that the other half of your working day will be much more productive and satisfying for you!

TRAVELLING TO/FROM WORK
- for all of you who commute on daily basis in order to get to and from work, it is not always and for everyone "just-a-few-minutes-ride". In my case, it is a 40 minutes long process. But it is ok, I decided that I will be able to take it! At first, I used that 40 minutes of sitting in a bus as a time to answer all my emails that came overnight, or plan the rest of my work day, or answering messages from all of my friends back home who's day was already half gone so they had something to share. Everyday until one day - when I decided to spend my time in the bus daydreaming or reading a book. And guess what? Not only that it seemed like 40 minutes were 4 minutes, but I also felt so peaceful and much more ready for a new day then before. Using a commute time for being with yourself can be a great everyday treat for your soul!

COOKING
- no matter how much I like it, it doesn't always come in the wright time. When I come home from work, I usually just want to lay on the couch and vegetate, but it is so very impossible to do. We are trying to eat a home made food because all the take-outs and frozen food are so not what I am used to have back home. But preparing the dinner from the scratch after a long day at work can be so annoying and time consuming. Well, until you figure out that while cutting the vegetables or stirring your sauce you can actually - SING! Singing is so healthy for the soul, no matter whether you are talented for it or not, nothing should be stopping you in letting your voice out. Or sing it quietly, inside. You don't have to sing with your voice, you can sing in your mind, too! Your favourite song, a tune that you've heard on the radio, something made up - it doesn't matter. It instantly makes me happy and I bet that it also puts an extra dose of love and good vibe into the food. There is an instant connection between singing and the spirit. Music is the language of the soul, speak it!

This is not a B&W photo, this is the actual blurred view from my living room window.. Not a trace of the upcoming spring season. Everything is still covered in snow and ice. Though sun IS trying to get through the clouds. Weather predictions are promising but the look through the window makes you question them. So, my dear March...
Be sunny, be snowy if you really want to, but please don't be windy... Be gatherings and dinners with friends, be great news, be Sundays at home, be (finally) organized wardrobe, be good movies, be more books, be happiness, be yoga, be more time outside, be less worries, be northern lights, be getaway, be breakfast in bed, be bubble bath with candles, be something never done before, but above all - be love.

MOVED IN ::: FIRST LUNCH

As you can see, it was nothing spectacular - leftovers from the previous night's bolognese sprinkled with some mozzarella and oven baked. But yet it is a lunch that I will always remember as the first lunch in our new home. I am not even sure if I should mention the first actual meal we had here, the very first night we were given the keys, when we came in just to soak up the new space for a bit... It is nothing that I am very proud of, A&W Buddy Burgers and fries..... But it seemed appropriate for the occasion, ha!
It is ok, the feeeling in the house. There is a lots of light, all day long, absolutely what I need. Marijan already set up my working table in my once-to-be office/meditation/jewellery room. All of the stuff is still everywhere around and I don't think I will have enough strength to put everything in place today, but I can see the progress. Koli already found her favorite spot. She was all over the place yesterday... Poor cat, she moved so many times in her short little life so far! She even flew over the Atlantic!

MOVING OUT - MOVING IN

Huge boxes in the middle of the living room can only mean one thing - it is time for moving AGAIN!
So, recently I shared a status on my Facebook, that is pretty much describing my life since i was 16 - "A year without moving is like it did not happen at all!" And I am still not sure whether I like it or not. I mean, there are cons and pros for everything, of course. The very action of packing things is oh-my-god-not-again situation. I am very bad in that, very bad. When it comes to packing my stuff, I would rather throw everything I have away and start all over again just to avoid the mess of folding, wrapping, packing, unpacking, boxing, bagging,nervous-breakdowning... Then the cleaning... And then the unpacking in the new place. Though, I must say I mind that a little less because sometimes it can be fun to decide where to put the plants, how to position the bed, how to organize the new closet, where to put this, where to put that... And then a new and fresh start in a new place/town/part of the city can be very exciting and interesting, too. You have to find new coffee shop, start with new gym, get to know the neighbourhood... I was just thinking yesterday - in my entire life I moved at least 15 times! FIFTEEN! That is not a small number for almost a 30-years old me. Or anyone.
Another thing that I don't really like when it is about moving out is leaving things behind. I don't think of material things, but feelings, certain feelings that a place where we (used to) live makes us feel. For example, this flat that I am moving out of was our first home here in Edmonton! The walls are full of exciting expectations, the unknown, the new friendships, good and bad news, tears for home and family, hopes and fears, decisions, love... Well, maybe I am just going too far with this, but it is how I feel. And I am pretty much sure that the new place will have all this in its own way after some time. And though I do not know how long will I call that new place as MY HOME, I just really hope that the next moving out won't happen soon. Just because of the boxes... That's all.

ANNIVERSARY - ALREADY ONE YEAR IN CANADA!

Oh, yeah! And it's been a wild ride! Looking back at these 365 days of being 8000 kilometres away from home, they went fast! Really fast! But I can say for sure that coming here was a good decision. Canada is beautiful, at least that small piece of it I managed to see travelling. And it is huge! And it is absolutely unforgettable! And it is simply amazing.
