Dental implants provide those with missing teeth problems with a chance to improve their quality of life – and the opportunity to improve the appearance of their smiles as well. As the implants replace both the form and function of teeth that have been lost due to a variety of causes, the dental implant treatment will be beneficial to those who are suffering from the problems caused by the loss of natural teeth.

However, not everyone who has missing teeth may fully welcome the idea of having a dental implant treatment, because of dental anxiety. There are some people who may feel nervous about the entire dental implant treatment, and the steps that need to be undertaken to complete the whole implant procedure. The dental anxiety may stem from a perception that discomfort and pain will be inevitable with the accompanying surgical procedures, or even from a general fear of the unknown that is associated with such a “complicated” treatment. Another factor which may contribute to the dental anxiety with regards to the dental implant procedure may come from an existing fear of the dentist, fear of needles, or fear of the dental drill.

Dealing with dental anxiety the proper way before going through a dental implant treatment will pave the way for a more rewarding treatment experience. Finding a dentist who will patiently explain the dental implant treatment, and who can address the fears and concerns of the patient in a positive manner, will be beneficial in providing much-needed emotional support. Psychological techniques (such as distraction techniques, dental hypnosis, or cognitive behavioural therapy) may also be used to help the patient go through the dental implant treatment without succumbing to panic attacks. Sedatives used in dental sedation can also be used to help the patient reach a completely relaxed state of mind prior to the actual dental implants placement, so that the whole experience will not be a traumatic one.

It is terribly frustrating to do everything in your power to ensure that your breath stays as fresh as it can be – and still come up with a not-so-nice smell when you open your mouth! The disappointment of discovering that bad breath is still present – even if you have diligently and regularly brushed your teeth – can be a huge blow to your self confidence, and can have a huge impact on how you interact with other people.

So, what seems to be the matter? Can bad breath still exist even if you regularly and thoroughly brush your teeth? The answer, unfortunately, is YES. Tooth brushing alone may not be enough to completely eradicate bad breath problems, especially in cases when the bad breath symptoms are not coming just from the entire mouth area.

The problem of bad breath may not be eliminated simply by brushing the teeth, or by using an antibacterial mouthwash; this is because the bad smell may be caused by other factors that need to be addressed, before the bad odours can be dealt with. Infections inside the mouth that cause bad breath will need to be treated first, so that the underlying cause of the bad smell can be completely eliminated. Other medical conditions, such as those affecting the respiratory tract or the digestive system, will also need to be properly diagnosed and treated to successfully provide the solution to a bad breath problem that seems to be too troublesome to deal with.

While tooth brushing alone may not have the power to eliminate a persistent bad breath problem (especially if the cause lies somewhere else besides the mouth area), good dental hygiene practices can still go a long way in ensuring that your breath stays as nice-smelling as it can be. Learning what the cause of a bad breath problem will lead to the solution, eventually turning your breath into something that you will not be ashamed of anymore!

Teeth that are straight and even-looking can have a significant impact on the attractiveness of one’s smile. A great looking smile can be achieved even by those who are not born with teeth that are naturally straight- with the help of orthodontic treatments which are designed to move the teeth into a more properly aligned (and better-looking) position. There are various orthodontic treatments available nowadays, depending on what a person needs and desires when it comes to the appearance of his or her smile.

Orthodontic treatments are some of the procedures done in cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of one’s smile. The main goal of any given orthodontic treatment is to straighten or improve the alignment of the teeth – so that both the form and the function of the smile are overall improved as well. Fixed orthodontic braces are mostly used in younger patients, and are commonly called “traditional” braces; this type of orthodontic treatment can take years to be completed, depending on the complexity of the teeth straightening needed. Orthodontic treatments for adults who wish to do so in a more discreet manner include the use of aligners or positioners (such as with Inman Aligners, or Invisalign), which are invisible or very clear orthodontic appliances that can effectively align teeth without being too obvious about the procedure.

There is no need to suffer the embarrassment or the discomfort of having crooked teeth for a long time. Orthodontic treatments are here to help bring about improvements in both the form and function of the teeth – so that you can look forward to even brighter smiles that you can proudly flash whenever you need or wish to do so!

The problem of having a dry socket is one of the complications which may arise after a tooth extraction procedure. The dry socket may result from the premature removal of the blood clot in the area where a tooth has just been extracted, which in turn will cause this toothless location to become exposed to fluids, air, and food particles. This complication can be extremely painful – all the more reason to do whatever it takes to avoid having to deal with it in the first place.

Is there anything you can do to avoid dry socket complications or problems? Read on to know a few things you can do on your own, and with the help of your dentist, to avoid having to go through this often very painful experience.

Dry Socket Prevention

Avoid strenuous activities immediately after your tooth extraction procedure, as this may interfere with the proper formation of the blood clot on the tooth extraction area. It is best to have complete rest, or at least to avoid engaging in physically taxing activities, for at least a few days after a tooth has been extracted.

Go on a soft diet after your tooth has been extracted, so that the blood clot can be formed without interference from sharp or hard food particles. Food that is spicy or hard to chew must be avoided, as these can irritate the area where the tooth has just been extracted – and may dislodge the protective blood clot that has formed. The use of a straw should also be avoided, as the sucking motion can prematurely dislodge the newly- formed blood clot.

Ask your dentist about the best way to clean your mouth; you may expect to be told to avoid brushing your teeth, spitting, or even rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours after the tooth extraction. After the 24 hour period has passed, you may be given the go-signal to very gently brush your teeth, or rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution.

Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco after the tooth extraction, as tobacco use may hinder the proper healing of the area where the tooth has been extracted.

Have you ever had a tooth extraction? Did you experience a dry socket problem after the tooth was extracted? Please LEAVE A REPLY below, and share your experiences and comments with us!

The UK’s leading independent manufacturer and distributor of orthodontic products, Bradford-based Ortho-Care, may be celebrating its 30th year in business but the company has its sights set firmly on the future following its move into new state-of-the-art, purpose-built premises in Shipley, West Yorkshire. The move comes after years of expansion for the firm which finally outgrew its previous premises when even meeting rooms had to be turned into offices.

The relocation signifies just how far the company has progressed since it was formed by directors Richard Garford and Kelvin Scott in 1982. In that time, Ortho-Care has progressed from a two-man operation to become the UK’s largest independent manufacturer and distributor of orthodontic products, employing 41 people. As well as supplying products such as braces and dental wires to orthodontists across the UK, around 15 per cent of the company’s sales are now from export.

The new 25,000 square feet headquarters provides a home for the company’s sales and admin functions as well as warehousing and distribution facilities, conference facilities, a canteen and a gym.

Director Richard Garford explains why the company undertook the major task of building its own headquarters: “We were keen to find a building that would not only accommodate our growing business and support our future expansion plans but one that would also provide a comfortable working environment for our staff. Having failed to find a suitable site that met all of these criteria, we decided to build our own”.

In fact Richard and Kelvin were so keen not to lose any staff due to the move, they even checked journey times during rush hour to be sure that the new premises would be easily accessible. The site which is close to Saltaire and Shipley’s bus and train routes was ideal.

The new building has been designed to be energy efficient and stringent new energy performance and carbon reducing standards have been implemented in its construction.

The move to the new premises will allow Ortho-Care to further strengthen its export activities and will support the company’s plans to offer training, conferences and workshops for orthodontic practitioners and post graduates.

Richard concludes: “With 30 successful years behind us, this investment will secure our position as the country’s leading distributor of orthodontic products and allow us to provide a range of exciting development opportunities to the orthodontic community.”

Have you noticed that your baby has been extra cranky lately? Are you at your wits’ end with trying everything just to keep that crankiness in check, and are at a loss for things to do just to bring back that happily smiling baby once again? You might want to check inside your baby’s mouth for the answers to your concerns – as your baby may just be experiencing the normal, but often very uncomfortable, teething symptoms.

Teething problems occur when your baby’s teeth are starting to erupt from under the gum line – this usually happens by the time your baby reaches six months of age. The discomfort from teething is often accompanied by swollen gums that are tender to the touch; it is also common to see excessive drooling on babies who are experiencing the pain and discomfort associated with teething. When your baby repeatedly bites on hard objects on a specific side of his mouth, there is a big chance that the spot is where the erupting teeth are located. You can also expect your baby to cry very easily, be extra fussy, and be irritable during the teething stage, because of the discomfort he or she will most likely experience.

You can bring your baby to a dentist to have the teething situation checked; the dentist may also prescribe gels or ointments that can be used to soothe irritated gums, so that your baby can find some sort of relief from the pain; parents can buy teething gels and powders from either chemists, or supermarkets/superstores. You can also do your share of easing your baby’s discomfort at home by using plastic teethers (some can even be filled with water) that your baby can bite on, instead of on other hard objects that may even be harmful to the gums; you can try placing the teether in a refrigerator first, as the cold temperature will provide a welcome treat for your baby – and will soothe the swollen and irritated gums even further.

Is your baby experiencing teething problems? What do you do to soothe your baby’s gum irritation/discomfort? Please LEAVE A REPLY below, and share your experiences and comments with us!

Beautiful smiles are composed of teeth that look healthy, white, and are properly aligned. Even the smallest imperfections can have a significantly negative impact on the appearance of a smile, which is the reason why cosmetic dentistry treatments are very important in the quest to achieve the best-looking smile possible.

Dental veneers are shells that are custom made according to a patient’s unique specifications, and are made using a material that very closely resembles the appearance of natural teeth. The dental veneers can effectively improve the appearance of teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay, chips, discolourations, or even minor alignment concerns.

Do you know want to learn more about the steps involved in a dental veneers procedure? We will tell you more about the dental veneers procedure so you will know what goes in with the treatment and the entire procedure.

Steps in Dental Veneer Treatment

1. The dental veneers procedure starts with the treatment planning, which will involve you and the dentist. This is the stage when the dentist will examine your teeth and determine your suitability for the veneers. Diagnostic tests and images may also be obtained at this stage to help with accurate treatment planning.

2. The affected tooth will be prepared by the removal of the same thickness of tooth enamel as the dental veneer which will be placed. A local anaesthetic may be administered to ensure that you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure.

3. The dentist will then take an impression or model of your teeth, which will be sent out to a laboratory that will in turn create the dental veneers. Temporary dental veneers may be placed on the affected teeth, while the final veneers are still being created in the laboratory.

4. When the final or permanent dental veneers have been created, they will be tested for the right colour (against the natural teeth), and adjustments may be made to ensure perfect fit. The tooth will then be cleaned, polished, and etched in preparation for the bonding process. A special cement will be applied to the dental veneer, which will then be attached to the tooth; this special cement will be activated and hardened by a special light. Any excess cement will then be removed from around the tooth and the veneer.

A dental implant treatment can provide effective solutions for missing teeth problems, and can bring about a huge improvement to the lives of those who have been living with missing teeth concerns. A dental implants consultation will jumpstart the entire dental implant treatment, and will be a great preparation for both the dentist and the patient – even before the actual treatment starts.

So, what can you expect from a dental implant consultation?

The initial consultation prior to a dental implant treatment will be the stage when the dentist can determine a patient’s eligibility for the implant procedure. A physical examination of the oral cavity, as well as obtaining images to help with the diagnostics, are crucial parts of the consultation and preparation phase – these will help the dentist or dental implantologist with the formulation of a dental implant treatment plan that corresponds with the patient’s specific needs. Taking the patient’s medical history is also a part of the initial consultation phase, as the information will be taken into consideration in creating the most effective dental implant treatment.

During the dental implant consultation, the dentist will explain in detail what procedures will need to be done with regards to the dental implant treatment; the patient will be encouraged to ask questions about the treatment to ensure that he or she will have the necessary information – to have peace of mind and reassurance about the whole procedure. The detailed discussions will also help the patient in visualising what the entire dental implant treatment will be like, and what the expectations will be for the duration of the treatment.

The dental implant consultation will also include a detailed breakdown of the costs and fees involved for every part of the dental implant treatment; this information will help the patient in being better prepared for the financial aspect of the dental implant procedure.

Tonsillitis is characterised by pain and swelling in the throat area, which occurs when the tonsils become infected and swollen. Tenderness can also be felt in the throat area, and the discomfort can radiate to other parts like the jaw, the neck, the face, and even the ears. Fever, nausea, runny nose, and chills may also be included in the list of symptoms that you can experience when you have tonsillitis.

Have you ever experienced the discomfort brought by tonsillitis? How do you deal with tonsillitis symptoms?

Dealing with Tonsillitis

Dealing with tonsillitis starts with the proper diagnosis by a doctor, to ensure that you can have the appropriate treatment for all the symptoms. Tonsillitis is contagious, so the condition needs to be managed properly to prevent its spread to other people around you.

• You can take over the counter pain relievers to ease the discomfort from the tonsillitis symptoms; some of the most common pain relievers suggested by doctors are acetaminophen, or ibuprofen – but the use of these pain relievers for children should first be approved by a doctor.

• If antibiotics are prescribed by the doctor for the treatment of tonsillitis, it is important to remember to finish the whole dosage indicated – to ensure that the symptoms will not come back and cause further problems. If you are allergic to penicillin, your doctor may prescribe erythromycin instead to treat the tonsillitis symptoms.

• Keep yourself hydrated by drinking cold, or warm beverages that are bland tasting. A dry throat and mouth can aggravate the symptoms of tonsillitis, and can worsen the infection – so it is important to keep yourself hydrated.

• Gargling with warm salty water can help ease the pain and discomfort in the throat area, and can also keep the throat hydrated to prevent the tonsillitis symptoms from worsening even further – so that you can start smiling once again as the painful symptoms are dealt with effectively.
