“I wasn’t being true to myself,” he says of the last few years with The Cardinals. “I loved that band.

“And I loved being in that band with Catherine Popper — she was amazing. She was my good friend and I love her playing. The band were balanced because of Cat. I could never have made Cold Roses (his 2005 first album with The Cardinals), one of my favourite records, without Catherine.

“I’ve never told anyone this and it’s great to tell someone finally — but Catherine’s character in a loving way was the inspiration for the character Rose in all my tunes.

“She was the key. So when she split (in 2006), it was really difficult for me. We carried on because we had to. I had made a commitment to shows and records but my heart wasn’t in it. By the time we got to (2008′s) Cardinology I was writing songs for the band (and not himself).

Have you ever seen Cat dunk? Awesome.

New single “Tiny Light” was a bluesy yet uplifting rocker and featured a huge jam powered by new bassist Catherine Popper (formerly with Ryan Adams & the Cardinals). Popper’s dynamic skills provide an element that was missing from the Nocturnals before, taking the band’s sound to a higher level that enables them to throw down a big jam whenever the mood strikes. This is like the Cleveland Cavaliers acquiring extra muscle with Shaquille O’Neal.

Check back for more updates . . .

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals were up to the task afterward at Antone’s, throwing down a captivating 75-minute set that went right up til 2 am, also featuring very strong material from their impending new album. At least three tunes went into sick jams catalyzed by the fantastic bass skills of new Nocturnal (and former Cardinal of Ryan Adams), Catherine Popper. The two of these gals were just dynamite and a hoped-for cover of “White Rabbit” did indeed materialize (they play it on the soundtrack for the new “Alice in Wonderland” flick), a great match on the evening with “Roadhouse Blues.”

As the headliners of the Americana Music Association’s showcase at Antone’s, GPN had all the time and understanding that was missing from their last SXSW performance at the Cedar Street Courtyard in 2007. With the place packed in anticipation of their set, they opened with “Sweet Hands” before attending to the business of SXSW, whetting appetites for the new album. Scott and Benny ramped up the Crazy Horse guitars for “Oasis” and “Tiny Light,” the room bounced to the reggae lilt of “Goodbye Kiss,” a more finessed version of “Paris” had Antone’s rocking and “Medicine” received the drum circle treatment. With enough time at their disposal, “Ah Mary” and “Big White Gate” had room to breathe and, as is her custom, Grace dropped jaws with the a capella opening to “Nothing But The Water,” which finished with a distinctively Southern, somewhat Skynyrdish flair. If anything overshadows the set, it’s gonna be Grace’s dress, which was probably one inch away from violating Austin’s public decency codes. Far from a wilting Southern belle, Grace shared the logistical problems the short hemming was causing at the organ bench with her own sense of knowing naivete. Rolling Stone just tabbed GPN one of the best new bands of 2010 and SXSW sets like the one at Antone’s will only enhance the growing legend.

Via the Boston Phoenix

I wandered into a performance by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, whose stage, amps, and instruments were covered in red roses. I guess they were taking their equipment to prom. They are a returning Bonnaroo champion, having made a big splash in 2006. This year, they’ve added a couple of members, subtracted one other, and have a whole bunch of other songs in their catalogue, which is a kind of Bonnie Raitt/The Band/Crazy Horse/J.J. Cale fusion, and thus perfect for anyone knee-deep in mud in Tennessee. Their upcoming album is being produced by T. Bone Burnett, so keep an eye on them…I think I may have accidentally discovered a great band under 60 without Pitchfork telling me about it first.

With all the touring the band has been doing over the past several years, Potter has completed a large number of songs that haven’t made it onto an album yet. “I am always writing. I like writing without thinking about where it’s going to go. We probably have 30 or more songs that are in various states and aren’t on one of our albums. Some are done, some are in pieces, and some are just plain bad,” she chuckled. “They are my little orphan songs.”

Those “orphan songs” may be on their own for now but they were born by a good mother who counts among her primary influences The Godfather of Grunge. “Neil Young has been a huge influence on me. Even back when I was doing solo gigs on my tinkery little piano in a coffee house I was playing ‘Old Man’ and songs from Harvest. As the band grew, I got way more into the Crazy Horse stuff and got very excited about the idea that there is a way to be dynamic and tasteful and still really hard edged. I love the line that Neil walks between nervous breakdown and total consciousness. That’s been my mantra in writing songs. I try to keep that balance at all times.
