The 1969 Camaro is the best Chevrolet of all time, according to Chevy fans who voted online in the centennial celebration poll.

Chevrolet asked fans all over the world to vote online for their favorite vehicle from the marque’s 100-year history.

Nearly 125,000 people voted, and the Camaro defeated the 1970 Chevelle SS in the final round, with 25,058 votes over 18,449.

Runners-up included the 1957 Bel Air and the 1953 first generation Corvette.

“Like the very best designs, the Camaro is much more than just a machine because it evokes powerful emotions in people of all ages. That’s why we looked to the ’69 for inspiration when designing the fifth-generation Camaro and why the ’69 Camaro is an example of the timeless vehicles Chevrolet will strive to deliver for the next 100 years.”, said Chevy design director, Tom Peters.

Final poll results:

1. 1969 Camaro – 25,058 votes
2. 1970 Chevelle SS – 18,449
3. 1953 Corvette – 13,297
4. 1957 Bel Air – 13,151
5. 1963 Corvette – 10,597
6. 2009 Corvette ZR1 – 10,188
7. 1948 Pickup – 9,242
8. 1936 Suburban – 6,459
9. 2010 Camaro – 4,861
10. 2011 Volt – 3,140
11. 1962 Impala – 2,597
12. 1964 Malibu – 2,135
13. 1989 Pickup – 1,822
14. 1969 K Blazer – 1,541
15. 1932 Deluxe Sport Roadster – 1,072
16. 1912 Classic Six – 759

“By 1969 the Camaro was extremely popular. And though this was the final year of the Camaro’s original iconic design, it went out with flying colors. The ’69 Camaro paced the Indianapolis 500® for the second time. It was the first and only year the legendary aluminum ZL1 engine was offered, and the Z28® SS/RS performance package qualified the ’69 Camaro to compete in the Trans-Am racing series. It’s still considered one of the hottest-looking rides of the classic muscle car era. It had a 290-horsepower rating but tested at close to 400. This four-wheeled icon has graced the silver screen many times. In Almost Famous, a young William Miller watches his sister drive off with her boyfriend in a blue 1969 Camaro coupe. And a slightly earlier version stars as the famous black beauty in Better Off Dead.” – Chevrolet

Born on September 17th 1929, Sir Stirling Moss, often called “the greatest driver never to win the World Championship”, was one of the best drivers in the history of motorsport.

Moss, who raced from 1948 to 1962, won 212 of the 529 races he entered, including 16 Formula One Grands Prix. He drove 84 different makes of car over the course of his racing career, including Lotus, Vanwall, Maserati, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Porsche.

He retired in 1962 after a crash left him in a coma for a month as afterwards he felt unable to continue driving at a professional level.

Stirling Moss was a pioneer in the British Formula One racing scene and placed second in the Drivers’ Championship four times in a row, from 1955 to 1958. He was defeated three times by Argentine legend Juan Manuel Fangio. In 1958, he lost the title by only one point to fellow Englishman Mike Hawthorn.

In 1954, he became the first foreign driver to win the 12 Hours of Sebring, and a year later he scored one of his most important victories. Moss won the 1955 Mille Miglia in the record time of 10 hours, 7 minutes, and 48 seconds, finishing almost half an hour ahead of Fangio in second place, driving the famous Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR #722.

The London born driver proved he was as gifted at the wheel of a sports car as he was in a Grand Prix car by winning the 1.000 km Nurburging race three time in a row (1958-1960). The first two years in an Aston Martin and the third behind the wheel of the Tipo 61 “Birdcage” Maserati.

In 1962, Moss was badly injured in a crash at Goodwood in a Lotus, in an accident that put him in a coma for one month and left him partially paralyzed for six months. He made a brief comeback in the British Touring Car Championship in 1980 with Audi, and in recent years has continued to race in historic cars.

Although he competed for Maserati or Mercedes-Benz, Moss preferred to race British Cars, stating, “Better to lose honourably in a British car than win in a foreign one”. But the British cars were often uncompetitive and this was considered the reason he never won the Formula 1 drivers’ championship. Stirling Moss remained the most successful English driver in terms of wins until 1991, when Nigel Mansell overtook him, after competing in many more races.

On 9 June 2011, during the Le Mans Legends qualifying session, Sir Stirling Moss announced his retirement from racing.

In 1990, Moss was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and in 2006 he was awarded the FIA gold medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to motorsport.

“I certainly had an appreciation of the danger which to me was part of the pleasure of racing. To me now racing is – the dangers are taken away: if it’s difficult, they put in a chicane. So really now the danger is minimal – which is good, because people aren’t hurt. But for me the fact that I had danger on my shoulder made it much more exciting. And I think with driving a motor car, the danger is a very necessary ingredient.”

Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima has broken his own record for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado, setting an amazing final time of 9:51.278 minutes for the 12.42-mile race.

The Japanese drove a highly modified Suzuki SX4 rated at 910 horsepower, competing in the Unlimited Class of the 2011 “Race to the Clouds”.

“Monster” Tajima smashed his previous record of 10:1.408 minutes set in 2007, and became the first driver to break the 10 minute barrier. The second fastest time was set by Rhys Millen in a Hyundai PM580 (10:09.242).

Five more time records were broken in this year’s race:

- The electric class record was broken, with a new time of 12:20.084 by Ikuo Hanawa;
- The vintage class (RMVR) record was broken, with a new time of 12:44.126 by Keith Davidson, in a 1963 Ford Falcon;
- The vintage class modified (RMVR modified) record was broken with a new time of 12:51.004 by Ralph Murdock in a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro;
- Rod Millen set a new class record in Time Attack 2WD at 11:04.912 in the Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe;
- The super stock class record was broken with a new time of 10:55.603 by Clint Vahsholtz in a 2006 Ford Mustang;

The 2011 edition was the last one raced on a gravel and tarmac mountain course. Locals have already started paving the course and by next year the entire 12.42-mile run is expected to be covered in tarmac.

In a move unprecedented in the auto industry SVT canceled its production of 2000 street model Cobras in order to evaluate its gaff over the 1999 cobras power deficit and to fix all the recalled cars. The company did however go ahead with plans to produce the most powerful, brutal Mustang since the Boss 429: the 2000 Cobra R.

SVT developed an all-new engine for the 2000 R. The cast-iron 5.4 L DOHC, 32 valve V-8 was tweaked until it turned out an awe-inspiring 385 hp and 385 lbs-ft. of torque. The 5.4 L bore was the same as the 4.6 L but the stroke was 15.8 mm longer, peak airflow was increased by 25% over the standard cobra stainless steel short tube headers led to a Bassani X-pipe, ’98 cobra catalytic converters, Borla mufflers and dual twin pipe side exhausts.

New engine mounts and crossmember lowered the engine in the compartment by 12 mm. Competition conditions dictated the use of an extra-capacity Canton Racing Products oil pan filled with synthetic lubrication. Redline for the Cobra R 5.4 L with 6500 RPM with a dual stage revlimiter shutting off fuel at 6800 and ignition at 7000.

A Tremec T56 , six-speed manual transmission was specified to handle the 5.4L’s tremendous torque. An aluminum driveshaft measuring 4 inches in diameter led to the 8.8 inch aluminum case differential. Induction hardened GKN half shafts are the final link to the rear wheels. Final drive ratio was a short 3.55 to 1 for increased acceleration.

Suspension tweaks included Eibach coil springs that lower the car 1.5 inches in front and 1 inch at the rear and made the chassis 30 to 40% stiffer than the 1999 Cobra. Brembo four-wheel disc brakes were activated through four piston aluminum calipers. Air inlets designed into the Cobra fog light openings were used to provide extra cooling for the R’s front brakes, with air ducts shipped and installed by SVT dealers if requested by the customer.

18″ five-spoke wheels were fitted with 265/40 ZR – 18 BFGoodrich g-Force tires which contributed somewhat to the R’s astounding 1.0G of lateral acceleration. The Cobra R’s rear deck and facia were from the base V6 Mustang, as rear exit dual exhaust cutouts were unnecessary with the cobras R’s side-exit setup. The front of the R included a specially designed front air splitter that in concert with the large rear wing reduced front lift and increased rear downforce. Because it also reduced ground clearance to a few inches, the splitter was shipped with the cars and installed at the customer’s request by the dealer.

Racing Recaro seats, a thickly padded steering wheel and a B&M Ripper shifter were used. Many stock cobra pieces were left off the R to reduce weight, but the standard equipment list was still extensive. It included dual airbags, independent rear suspension, ABS, a 20 gallon Fuel Safe bladder type fuel cell, full-size spare tire, front air splitter, 7 inch rear wing, power dome hood, SecuriLock passive antitheft system, Recaro seats, tilt steering wheel, 180 mile-per-hour speedometer, B&M Ripper shifter with leather wrapped shift knob, power equipment group (dual electric remote control mirrors, power side windows, power door locks, and power deck lid release), dual illuminated visor mirrors, and keyless illuminated entry system.

The 3,590 pound Mustang Cobra R could do 0-60 MPH in less than 5 seconds with a top speed of more than 170 MPH. A total of 300 of the $54,995 SVT Mustang Cobra R models were sold.

Audi won the Le Mans 24 Hours for the tenth time in 12 years following a closely-fought race with Peugeot.

The number two car of Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler, and Benoit Treluyer was left to fight off three Peugeot’s for the win after the #1 and #3 cars crashed early Saturday.

First to go was the R18 driven by Scotland’s two-time winner Allan McNish, who miraculously walked away from the wreckage of his car after a high speed accident. McNish’s team-mate and last year’s winner Mike Rockenfeller was next to leave the race after his car touched a Ferrari and crashed into the barriers.

Audi’s only survivor held the lead and kept the chasing Peugeot pack at bay, crossing the finish line by a mere 13.854 seconds, with Andre Lotterer behind the wheel.

The Peugeot 908 driven by France’s Simon Pagenaud crossed the line in second, with the French car manufacturer also filling third, fourth and fifth places.

Audi chief Wolfgang Ullrich said: “This was the toughest win of all! It was very tight from the beginning, then losing two cars with horror crashes, we’re lucky both drivers are with us and are fine. Our emotions have ranged from the top of the mountain down to the deepest caves.”

Historic victory for Audi

The german manufacturer won its 10th Le Mans on Sunday, becoming the second most successful manufacturer in history. Audi passed Ferrari, who recorded their 9th and last win in 1965. Porsche still holds the all-time record in the world’s oldest sports car race in endurance racing, with 16 trophies won between 1970 and 1998.

JR Hildebrand was one turn away from winning the 2011 Indianapolis 500.

The young Californian had it in the bag for 799 turns, but screwed the final left and gave the race to englishman Dan Wheldon.

The 23 year old rookie slammed into the wall on the fourth turn of the last lap, and Wheldon passed by to claim his second Indy 500 success.

JR Hildebrand still managed to slide across the finish line in second place, but that was little consolation for missing a debut win. “It’s just a bummer.”, he said.

“It’s obviously unfortunate, but that’s Indianapolis. That’s why it’s the greatest spectacle in racing. You never now what’s going to happen.”, said Wheldon, who finished second the past two years.

The Sunday race was the 100th anniversary of the first Indy 500.

The 2011 edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will take place in 30 days, on June 26.

With a total of 184 competitors, 121 riders and 63 drivers, the 89th edition of this historic event is expected to be of great success.

An annual event since 1916, there is no other race course in the world like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns. It begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of Colorado’s Pikes Peak. As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes, and “robs” engines of 30% of their power, demanding of competitors and vehicles to be in their best shape simply to cross the finish line.

No wonder it attracts race crews that are willing to spend several hundred thousand dollars and months of preparation to compete in “The Race to the Clouds”.

According to the official website of the event, “This year the race has 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes. The race will take place on Sunday, June 26, with race related events all week long.”

Brief history

The first Pikes Peak International Hill Climb took place in 1916, and it was won by Rea Lentz in a Romano Demon Special (20:55:6).

The oldest class still running is the “Open Wheel”, which has been run since 1916, and has been won by famous drivers such as Mario Andretti, Al Unser, and Bobby Unser, who scored eight overall victories in ten years.

The newest category is “Vintage”, and it was introduced in 2008.

The overall record is held by japanese race driver Nobuhiro Tajima, who clocked a time of 10:01.408 on July 21, 2007, driving the 1000 horse-power mid-engined Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special.

In 1989, an award-winning short film about the 1988 event was released by French director Jean-Louis Mourey (Climb Dance), featuring Finnish former World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen, as he won the event in a record-breaking time with his turbocharged Peugeot 405 T16.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced the comeback of the Super Bee package on the 2011 Dodge Charger, but no specific details were given yet.

Based on previous releases, we can only imagine that the new Dodge Charger Super Bee will receive special exterior paint colors, with the popular “Super Bee” logos on the rear fenders, and a special set of wheels.

Most likely, the new Super Bee will be powered by a 6.4-liter, 465 horsepower, Hemi V8, and will feature an optional eight-speed automatic, also used on the new Chrysler 300C.

The 2011 Dodge Charger Super Bee generation will be offered in a limited edition of about 1,000 units as the previous Super Bees offered from 2006 to 2008.

The Super Bee package was first introduced on the 1968 Dodge Coronet, and it was moved to the Dodge Charger in 1971. It was used again for three years starting with the 2006 Dodge Charger SRT8.

Powered by a new 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that manages 465hp, and 465 pound-feet of torque, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 can hit 60 mph in only 4.8 seconds, making it their fastest ever vehicle.

Interestingly, this latest model will be about 13% more economical than its predecessor, thanks to an all new dual exhaust system.

“The all-new 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the ultimate performance SUV, delivering a combination of Jeep capability and utility, world-class performance, luxury and refinement, and advanced innovative technology.

Our new benchmark performance SUV effectively broadens the Grand Cherokee portfolio, and will continue to draw new customers into Jeep showrooms.”, said Mike Manlye, President and CEO of Jeep, Chrysler Group LLC.

Pricing has not been revealed yet, but the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is expected to hit showrooms sometime during the third quarter of this year.

Chevrolet, founded by racing pioneer Louis Chevrolet 100 years ago, celebrates its performance heritage with the 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette.

The racing-inspired 2012 Centennial Edition package will be available on all Corvette models, including the Z06, ZR1 and Grand Sport.

“Racing and performance are the roots of Chevrolet, a tradition carried forward today by Corvette. The Centennial Edition not only celebrates our 100 years, it once again pushes Corvette forward for a new generation of sports car fans.”, said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing.

As previously stated, Chevy really gave the Centennial Corvette a “sinister” look. This special edition will only be available in a black carbon flash metallic paint job, with black graphics, satin-black wheels, red brake calipers, and a matching black interiour colour scheme with red stitching.

Chevrolet also designed a special Centennial Edition badge which includes a ‘100’ logo instead of the traditional Corvette fleur-de-lis symbol. All models will also feature an image of the man who designed the first ever Chevrolet car almost 100 years ago, Louis Chevrolet, that will appear on the B-pillars, wheels, and at the centre of the steering wheel.

These all black Vettes will be loaded with top-notch technology, including the fast reacting “Magnetic Selective Ride Control” suspension. The alloys wheels will be available in 18″ and 19″ for the Coupe, Convertible and Grand Sport models and larger 19″ or 20″ for the Z06 and ZR1.

Pricing will be available this summer, shortly before the first deliveries.

Corvette Legacy

The Corvette is being built since 1953, and has been produced in six generations, each of them with a great impact on automotive history. “America’s pride” was also backed by a few astonishing prototypes.

In almost 60 years of history, Corvette also proved itself out on the track. From the Grand Sport to the C6-R, Corvette was more than just a beautiful road car. And who could forget the Indy 500 pace cars driven by Chuck Yeager, Parnelli Jones or Emerson Fittipaldi?
