It plays with my head and heart and may fiddle with the consensus truth as defined by others. Writing it makes me laugh, cry, cringe or pine for the good old days. It also helps me see the present through the past.

Virginia Woolf says, “The past is beautiful because one never realizes an emotion at the time. It expands later and thus we don’t have complete emotions about the present, only about the past.”

These stories are bits and pieces that have a special appeal as I look back on many decades. I interpret most of them as positive, but are they true? To the best of my knowledge, I say yes, but l urge those who know me from back then, to set the record straight and/or add to it. I welcome feedback similar to what Tara Westover asked of her siblings as she shared early drafts with them and tried to make her memoir Educated true to its details and context. To its reality.

So, what stories do I build on from faded memory traces and hard-wired experiences? What ones irresistibly tease me with cherry-picked tang or sweet juiciness? What ones are rotten apples that should be left on the ground? What ones are low-hanging fruit that must be gulped down now? What ones are tempting my memory, but not ready to be shared yet, or ever?

And what ones have already been confronted at length and have had their say, at least for a while?

Like stories about golf. My life-long interest in hitting a little ball into a slightly bigger hole covered lots of time and space in my book An Old Caddie Looks Back: Reflections about a Town that Loves Golf . . . and Tiger; and that game later played a significant role in my novel, The Learner. I’m going to let golf have a rest for a while.

Or like stories about nature. My half-century of experiencing a great big lake up close was the dominant focus in Discovering Lake Superior and the Western Upper Peninsula. Our family-owned property along with its beauty and vulnerability are always gentle on my mind. I dream about it during times away and try to learn more about it when there, but I’m going step back from writing about that place for a while.

Or my book Discovering Beloit: Stories Too Good to be True? It’s a novel that gave me an opportunity to focus on two matters close to my head and heart: teaching and investigative journalism. There is so much still to say about these fascinations, but if I start out with something designed to be essay length now, it will be hard to avoid letting it lead to something too long. Maybe another day.

And there are topics I am very interested in that could be the focus of single-themed books: parents, friends, marriage, kids, homes, games, Beloit College, England, sex, and more, but not for now.

Here is what I am left with: The experiences and memories that have made the cut for now.

Turning eighty!

. . . and some other favorite things.

Together these essays may embody a tentative book title: Cleaning the Basement: A Memoir of growing (older?). The first part borrows from the words that my wife, Mim, spoke clearly and repeatedly to me as I worked on my last book. She would say, “You’re spending all that time on writing. When are you going to clean the basement?”

I looked right at her and thought, “Hmmm, interesting question.” Only later did I realize that maybe I could have the best of two worlds: continue my writing and work on (ahem) cleaning the basement, which gave birth to the main title here. I know, it’s lame, stupid, sophomoric and discardable, but I have to share the fact that so far, she smiles when I say “I am working on Cleaning the Basement.”

Note that I have said, “. . . may take on the title.” There are other candidates such as:

Life Begins at LXXX

How Old are YOU?

What Now?

Picking Up and Dusting Off the Pieces

Looking at the Past Through Cloudy Lenses

Looking at the Past with New, Snazzy Plastic Lenses Implanted by Dr. Mario Rojas

Grasping for Straws

And others that I haven’t considered.

In any event, I am slowly working on these developing essays with a fascination that lights some new fires now and then and always makes me realize that I’m still getting to know myself. (Yipes. Gulp!)

That doesn’t mean he still isn’t teaching… and learning.

“I think to really learn something you need to teach it,” Warren said. “Students may not always learn it, but you do.”

Another way to learn? In Warren’s case, you write a book about something you’re extremely passionate about. In the research and writing, the author can’t help but become thoroughly absorbed in a topic.

For Warren, past books have featured “discoveries” — of the game of golf while growing up in Rockford, of the lure of Lake Superior and his beloved Western Upper Peninsula in Michigan and finally, of the state of investigative journalism in small-town America.

His most recent work, a novel called “The Learner: Confronting God, Golf, and Beyond” combines two of his life-long passions: religion and golf. Warren, who once played on a state championship golf team at Rockford East High School, is convinced by hitting the links on a regular basis one can truly become closer to God.

He says many golf club-carrying clergy he knows agree with him: Golf and God can go hand in hand.

Gulp. It’s tempting to go on about leadership that has fallen, role models who have disappointed, and our individual aches and pains. Hey, these are important, but they fade (a little bit) when compared to the goodness and beauty around us. We are so fortunate and happy.

Our family tops the list of joys. We love being with and learning from daughter Rachel, son-in- law David, and grandsons Jack and Will. All of them flourish in their own ways while living near Chicago in Wheaton, Illinois. Jack is 16 and a high school junior; Will is 13 and in middle school. Rachel is a research analyst with the American Dental Association. David heads a department at Collegis Education, a marketer and developer of information technology for colleges.

We–Mim & Tom–stay busy around Beloit. Mim is president of two local organizations: Friends of the Beloit Public Library and “East End, ” a group of intellectually curious women who periodically write and present research papers to members. Tom is chair of a Rotary Club effort that honors teachers from area schools and colleges. He is about to sign a contract that will lead to publication of his latest book, a novel called The Learner (See thomasfranklinwarren.com for a teaser).

We try to exercise regularly on land and water, often at a health club called North Pointe owned by Beloit Hospital. We regularly walk around Lake Geneva and a nearby nature sanctuary called Nygren Wetlands. We attend fine arts performances in Beloit, Rockford, Milwaukee, and Chicago. During the winter we traveled to Ajijic, Mexico to visit friends who have a home there.

During this past warm season we spent more time than usual at our Lake Superior cabin in Michigan, but the lake was (and continues to be) naughty, lashing high water that erodes the fragile dune behind our diminishing beach. We hardly swam, canoed, or sat by beach fires at all this year because of these challenges plus cold, wet weather. BUT we love going there, and played many games of Scrabble, Racko, and Cribbage while traveling east and west of our place to experience more of the Upper Peninsula.

We hope this letter finds you in good health. We wish you the very best in 2018 and beyond.

This is the story of a young man fresh out of seminary who becomes the pastor of a church seeking a new leader. Somebody, they advertised, “. . . who can relate to young people. Somebody who can offer us creativity. Somebody who can take criticism. We want somebody who likes challenges and is a great preacher. We are still learning about lots of things, and we hope that our new
minister is too, but it wouldn’t hurt if s/he is also a miracle worker.”

The man who got the job was still learning, and he knew something about miracles. He had been part of one on a golf course. It hooked him on the game forever. So when the church called him, they confronted something new with the golf, but a challenge as old as the scriptures emerged as well: homelessness.

Prologue

The visitor said, “ . . . and they’ll make you sign statements where you pledge to behave.”

Everyone chuckled. One of the seminarians replied, “Tell me more.” “Well, congregations vary, but my first church was very clear up front that their clergy better not get into a – they called it – complicated relationship with a member. It might diminish one’s objectivity as a spiritual leader.”

The other visitor chimed in, “Yeah, that’s chapter and verse for many churches. Even if they are two consenting adults, a pastor’s primary relationship is to the parishioner, and it must be maintained. As a trusted mentor, not a friend or business partner or lover. Or part of a member’s regular golfing foursome . . . ”

Chris interrupted, “Even in congregations led by our graduates? Won’t they be tolerant? Won’t they treat us as individuals? The churches that hire us?”

“. . . Some are very strict. They say that if the pastor-member relationship is no longer primary, then it needs to be severed in order for the parishioner to find a new spiritual leader. She or he may even have to stop attending that church.”

Twelve first-year students and two ordained alums had gathered in what was known as the Lower Room, a relaxing place for libation and conversation in the basement of a big, old, white frame house in the cluster of seminary buildings adjacent to the University of Chicago campus. Its bulletin boards were plastered with notices of upcoming events and things for sale. Photos under the heading of
“Trouble Makers” plastered the walls: Mother Teresa, Reinhold Niebuhr, Martin Luther King, Martin Luther, John Dewey, Jane Adams, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Gandhi, all stared right back at you. In a space labeled “Image of the Month” was an 8” X 10” glossy black and white print of a homeless guy dozing in a sleeping bag curled up at the bottom of a south side street sign. “This could be Jesus,” was scribbled on the wall next to the picture. Following it in a different hand: “Duh, no kidding.”

These aspiring ministers of God were tapping into the experiences of two ordained graduates of the seminary who were back in Hyde Park for a conference about the future of Christian youth in mainstream America, but the topic of the moment was dual roles.

The first alum went on, “The simplest way to understand dual roles is that it’s a conflict of interest. Parishoners’ needs must be protected and come first. There was a minister’s covenant or code – or whatever they call it – that I signed at the time of my ordination. It says that I will not use my ministerial status, position or authority knowingly to misguide, negatively influence, manipulate, or take advantage of anyone in any way.”

Chris gasped, “Wow, not anyone?” and everyone laughed, but he didn’t think it was funny. Recently, he had dreamed of holding forth from his pulpit while a member who would become his future wife stared up at him from her pew.

The second alum said, “Without communicating clear boundaries up front, dual roles can become hard to manage, and harm a lot of people . . .”

Other students interrupted.

“. . . Can’t congregations and clergy create their own special agreements? Ones that are mutually sensitive and respected?”

“. . . What if they’re not a member of the church – the other party? Does that make a difference?

“. . . What about relationships with young people, like teenagers in confirmation?”

“. . . It better be platonic.”

“. . . Or intellectual.”

“. . . Hey, even intellectual ones can cause trouble if they go in certain directions or too far. Be careful.”

“. . . What about sports? What if you like one team and they like another?”

The first alum spoke up. “Well, that’s usually all in fun, but it can go too far. Emphasizing sports. Ad nauseum. Pardon the image, but talking about sports is a lob shot or gimme putt for many ministers: Easy and irresistible. But be careful. Don’t be known primarily as an athlete who came to The Lord, even if it’s true.”

The second alum added, “All of this is especially dicey if you are an unmarried pastor in a small town, since many people that you meet are either current parishioners or potential ones, assuming you covet new acquaintances like most of us shepherds do . . .”

A student went, “Baaa, baa.” Only a couple of the others smiled.

“. . . Hey, sports are important to lots of people. Too important, I think in many cases, but this never gets written into pledges about behavior, and please don’t get me going on and on about Sunday morning soccer games and how they suck kids out of churches.”

These topics were not new to Chris and his classmates, but talking about them in a group that included ordained ministers was sobering confirmation of what they had learned here and there: Being a minister of God is complicated and challenging

It’s been a wonderful year in spite of some low points: Like Mim needing hip replacement surgery during January and then experiencing neuropathy in her legs in the aftermath. Like Tom needing shoulder surgery in May which turned loose lingering shingles viruses dormant since childhood chicken pox and kept him from swinging a golf club the rest of the year. Like experiencing the descent of America into a political season that brought out the worst in our leaders.

Because of our physical therapy needs we have become active participants at North Pointe, a health and fitness facility nearby. We exercise “wet” in the pools or “dry” on the machines and track. It’s become a new playground for us. Because of these same needs we didn’t get to our cabin on Lake Superior for the first time until mid-July, but then we went back and forth a lot through October. We are still hooked on that place in spite of the rising lake level that diminishes our beach.

Being with our daughter Rachel and her family – David, Jack, and Will – tops our list of joys. We visit them in Wheaton usually when one of the boys is performing or participating in school activities. These days Will plays the string bass and participates in cross country when he’s not taking care of the newest members of the family: a chameleon “Ralph” and a silver lab canine “Remmy. “ Jack is deeply into soccer, everything academic, and has gone back to piano lessons. Rachel and David thrive in their jobs and provide a stimulating, loving home for the boys and quadrupeds.

Both of us are busy every day via volunteer, cultural, or education activities where we meet dynamic newcomers who have been attracted to what Beloit offers in its continuing business and cultural renaissance. We carry on with a hope that things will get better for all people, but we worry about the fear, divisiveness, and coarseness that has become the national norm.

It’s been a wonderful year because life is wonderful and people are good, for the most part.

Love,
Mim & Tom

Especially folks who may be ordained ministers with a very soft spot in their hearts for the grand old game? Well, I am deeply into writing a novel around that theme. It features a character I am calling “The Learner.” He is a young pastor struggling with the many expectations of his job while trying to become a respectable golfer. I have met with a number of real life clergy and others who tell me tantalizing tales of trying to address both of these challenges, but I am always looking for more – tantalizing tales.

So, are you – or have you played golf with – a woman or man of the cloth? Have you heard a sermon that blends the two: golf and God? Have you invoked God while addressing your own golfing needs? I once had a friend, Alan Miller – may this good man rest in peace – who regularly claimed that God was out to get him on the golf course, and evidence suggests that it may have been true.

Last evening my wife Mim and I along with some friends went to see the movie Sully, a 2009 story about the airline Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. This man safely landed his passenger jet in the Hudson River after geese got sucked through both engines shortly after takeoff from New York’s LaGuardia airport. His quick and decisive action saved all 155 on board. The story broke worldwide and Sully became a familiar name to us and countless others.

The movie received good reviews and I like the actor Tom Hanks who played the captain, so I expected a fine couple of hours of escape before a meal out with friends. What I didn’t anticipate was that I would be revisiting an experience of mine that eerily paralleled Sully’s.

It was December of 1976. My wife, young daughter, and I were living in England where I was leading a London Seminar for Beloit College students. Back in Rockford, Illinois, my father had unexpectedly died, and I traveled there for the funeral. On the return flight scheduled from Chicago O’Hare to London Heathrow strange things happened during the takeoff of our Boeing 747 jet. As we reached the ground speed where a plane of that size usually becomes airborne, I heard loud bangs and thuds and clanks that had my full attention. The plane took off moments afterwards, but soon I knew that our flight path had changed. Instead of going north over Lake Michigan while gaining altitude and following the usual great circle route that heads over large stretches of eastern Canada and the north Atlantic, our plane stayed very low and went around the south shore of the big lake. Something was wrong. The buzz of passenger talk was broken by the voice of the captain.

He told us that blown tires on take off had resulted in a damaged landing gear which sent – he called it – shrapnel through the fuselage of the plane. Our jumbo jet had a hole in it. We were losing air pressure that would only get worse. An emergency landing was planned for New York’s JFK airport about an hour away, but first we had to drop most of our fuel over the Atlantic to diminish the effects of an explosion that could ignite when we touched the ground.

Unlike the passengers and crew on Captain Sully’s plane, we had time to think about our fate plus work to do. We were instructed to take off our shoes and put them under the seats, remove everything from our pockets, and practice bending over so that our heads were in our laps. We were told that if we landed on land, if we landed on land – good grief, this means that we might land on water . . . in December . . . if we landed on land, we should slide down the chutes that will be automatically deployed, and then run away from the plane as fast as we can.

These tidbits hardly calmed the passengers or crewmembers. A full 747 flight has many attendants. As we neared the Atlantic I counted eleven of them lined up near a bulkhead, several with tears flowing down their faces. Not confidence builders for us infrequent fliers. For a while I reflected on the fact that I was leaving my father’s funeral service and might be – probably am – nearing my own.

We did a low first pass over JFK so that the underside damage of the plane could be examined by people on the ground and radioed to our crew. Out the windows we could see dozens of ambulances, lights flashing, lined up on both sides of a runway. Then we regained altitude and headed over the water. From my window seat I could see the fuel being jettisoned from openings at the end of the wing, like a fire hose at full blast.

The captain had the delicate task of landing the enormous plane with only part of his gear in use, so he was dealing with unknowns. After what seemed like an interminable approach time, we braced for the touch down. Like in the movie our attendants cried out: Brace, brace, brace . . . heads down, stay down. And again and again: Brace, brace, brace . . . heads down, stay down. And then they went quiet as we neared the ground. I remember only a single baby letting out a cry. The flashing lights of the emergency vehicles enveloped us.

The immediate touch down was smooth, and somebody yelled, “We made it!”

“Not yet,” replied another and we stayed silent.

Finally we rolled to a stop. We had been brought in safely. Soon we cried out our yippees, amens, and howls of ecstasy. We grinned from ear to ear and hugged strangers. The place – the plane – unlike the Sully one was high and dry, but still damaged enough so it could not be used for the remainder of the flight to England. After nine hours on the ground, we boarded another 747, and took our same seats. Soon the same captain – our Sully? – came walking down the aisles. More than once he said, “I’m going to be retiring at the end of the year, and this flight is only the second time I’ve been in an airplane with a hole in it. The first was when I was a beginning fly boy and stuck my leg through the fuselage of a canvas plane.”

When we landed at Heathrow everyone applauded and cheered for a long time.

Not totally gone.

During spring and summer we have made five or six trips to the cabin (Read: lake) and each time north I have been accompanied by the anxiety of experiencing no beach when we get there.

My expectations have been so pessimistic that almost every time upon arrival I have been mildly encouraged: there is some sand still there and during our most recent trip in early September we were back to having a beach fire on, well, a beach.

Our diminished beach is partly a function of the rising lake, but not totally. Currents and sand flows that have been very good to us over the decades have moved on.
