Trying to caulk your crown moulding with expired caulking could end up causing a lot of frustration. And I do agree that it is very important to make sure it is paintable otherwise you'll end up spending a lot more time than you anticipated on the project. I completely agree with you and think that it should be printed in big letters on the front of the tube. One time my friend decided to refurbish his kitchen cabinets without any experience and he ended up spending about two weeks without doors on his cabinets.
