We made it!!!!!!!

Thanks for an amazing two years. Today was a really special day. We spent a lot of time celebrating our successes and remembering special times together. Thanks for all of your support and sharing your wonderful kids with me. I am hoping that we will be able to stay in touch and I will get to continue to watch as my students learn and grow.

I hope that everyone has an excellent summer. I am off to the Googleplex for the Google Teacher’s Academy next week and then on to San Antonio to present our Mathlincs project at NECC and then a visit with my family in Texas and a 3 week road trip full of great adventures with my husband. Then it will be back to work.

I plan on taking Shania, the traveling cow, on my adventures so you can keep up with us at www.shaniaroadtrip.blogspot.com .

A few of you asked about copies of the 6^th Grade Promotion video. I was unable to get those completed before the kids left today. I wanted to fix the mistakes from last night.

If you would like a copy, please send me an e-mail with your address and I will get it out to you. I hope that you also get a chance to see the DVD I compiled for the kids. Lots of great memories. Enjoy.

Today was all about promotion. We practiced the song and walking in, etc. in the morning. In the afternoon, we practiced in front of the school. We looked awesome! What a great group of kids. We had a little time to share words of encouragement with each other. But not enough, there are lots of words to share.

Tonight, we need to be at school at 6:45. After the ceremony, the 5th grade parents have put together a lovely reception for us. It should be quite the event.

Tomorrow we will have the awards assembly. At about 12:45, we will take the walk and say our goodbyes to Lincoln.

6^th Grade Promotion tomorrow!

We may be going to the park in the morning. So bring something nicer to change into for the 6^th Grade Promotion practice for the school at 1:00.

The REAL promotion will be at 7:00 pm. Students should be here at 6:45.

This morning we had the treat of hearing some real talent at the Lincoln Talent Show. You can enjoy the show again tonight at the Lincoln Theater at 7pm. You will be impressed. Because of the weather, we were bussed down and then we walked back at the end. Also because of the weather, our picnic was inside and we didn’t go to Hillcrest Park. We did have fun in the room signing yearbooks and playing on the computers.

The last part of the day we practiced once more for the promotion ceremony. We looked so great that it made Mrs. Thornburgh cry.

Tomorrow is the Talent Show and Field Day at Hillcrest

Yearbooks were passed out today. There are more for sale in the office for $7.

PTA meeting is tonight.

Lots of creativity today. We started off our day with some reading. Then we took a look at our AIMS page and wrote reflections about our learning this year. Continuing our theme of being the Spielberg class, we watched a little of another classic. ET. We then worked on organizing our folders, binders and such. After lunch we had some time to work on our Social Studies project and then we went up stairs to practice our promotion ceremony and get things set up. We spent the last few minutes of the day celebrating Mariaelena’s birthday and finishing up our Social Studies projects. Very busy around here.

Much warmer and drier day for us than Friday. Only because we are inside instead of outside. We started our day with some great aerobic exercise in the bouncy house. THANKS PTA! We then spent some time reading. (it was reading time.) Then it was time for some visual literacy skills. Since we are known for being the “Spielbergs” of the school, we watch the classic “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. We had music practice with Mrs. McCallum. Some of us will be performing at the Awards Assembly. We then spent some time making our own movies for our Social Studies projects. We are creating commercials to convince someone to travel to our location.

Tomorrow we go to WildWaves rain or shine.

We need to be here at 7am so that the busses can leave by 7:15. We will be returning at 6:30 PM. Please make sure to arrange transportation home for your child.

Chaperones will need to carpool. I believe that there are 12 chaperones going in all. (We really appreciate you coming and being willing to carpool. This saves us from having to double the transportation cost with another bus)

Students need either a sack lunch or money for food at the park.

All students need to bring swimwear (no metal zippers), sunscreen J, and a towel in addition to the clothes they wear.

Today was our last day of reading. It was also the last day of highly capable math, although, next week, in-between talent shows, bouncy houses, field day, etc, We will try to squeeze some more math and reading in. J We did a little organizing in the room. The egg drop was a bit different than usual, but it did happen. Eggs were tossed from a 3^rd floor window and we were just outside to watch our class. The rain did not win that contest. We were treated to a great concert by our school choir. They are small in number, but they did a great job.

Mrs. Thornburgh told us that our videos helped her get invited to attend the Google Teacher’s Academy at the Googleplex this summer. Maybe it is a geeky thing to be excited about, but she thinks that it will be a lot of fun to hang out at Google Headquarters for a day. She hears that they even have heated toilet seats… J

Great report from the sub this afternoon. Mrs. Thornburgh knew the kids could do it!

This morning after reading, we practiced our song for the promotion ceremony and then we did some review in math. Mrs. Thornburgh had to leave for one last meeting during math. We continued to work on our math. After lunch, we had PE and then we said good bye and congratulations to our highschool helper, Merenza. We read "Oh The Places You'll Go" and gave Merenza a card. Merenza brought cookies so we had quite the celebration. The last period of the day we worked on our scrapbook pages for our letters to Lincoln.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will have the Egg Drop tomorrow. We are also having a choir concert tomorrow.

Looks like rain for our WildWaves trip. We will still have fun.

Thanks again for the brave chaperones who volunteered to go with us.

It is getting to be that time of year where flexibility is REALLY important. Our schedule got changed around today due to the weather and the stomach flu…J The Egg Drop was postponed until Thursday, with hopes of better weather. We had music this morning because Ms. McCallum has been sick and she had planned on us playing our guitars at the Awards ceremony on June 13 and we weren’t going to have time to practice.

We also spent time today working on our Letters to Lincoln book. We had a meeting about our trip to WildWaves. A lot of questions were answered. Remember that we need to be here at 7:15 and will be back at 6:30 pm. We will need swim stuff, sun screen and either money or a sack lunch.

We also talked about 6^th grade Promotion. This will be a very special event at 7pm on June 12. 8 more days as 6^th graders and Lincoln students!

Peacock With a Purpose

I discovered a peacock on my lawn today. Abbie Ferguson has organized a team for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The Peacock is a clever way to promote the event and get people to donate. If you would like to donate to help find a cure for cancer and support Abbie and her efforts go to Jack's Pack donation site.

No new homework this week. Make sure everything is turned in.

WildWaves Friday. We are leaving at 7:15 and will return at 6:30, bring lunch, money for snacks, swimsuit, towel and sunscreen

Busy start to our week. In math, we worked on the 8 week assessment for Algebra. After lunch, some of us had choir while others read. We then worked on our Letters to Lincoln video.

The last period of the day we worked on our Social Studies advertisements.

LaVenture meeting on June 2. (for upcoming LaVenture students and parents) Students have a packet that needs to be filled out and taken to the meeting Monday night. If you can not attend the meeting, bring the form back on Monday and Mrs. Thornburgh will get it to LaVenture.

We still need a chaperone or two for our trip to Wild Waves. Please let me know if you can come.

AVID interviews for Mt. Baker are Monday.

This morning, those of us going to LaVenture next year, went on a field trip to the school. Those of us going to Mt. Baker stayed here. We watched “Are You Smarter than a 5^th Grader”. When the LaVenture folks returned we worked on being smarter than a sixth grader with our number sense math problems. After lunch, we had a class meeting. Lots of things happening in the last two weeks of school. We then had an assembly. We watch a dance group from Western Washington University do a presentation about Science. Was very interesting.

Tonight is TEAM Graduation. Music starts at 5:30. Kids who come to the graduation get a t-shirt. They will need their t-shirt to get in free for skating. A nice event put on by the city of Mount Vernon for our students.

Mrs. Thornburgh was back today and happy to hear that we got a good report from the sub. She shared some of her new SmartBoard tricks she learned yesterday at her meeting. Ooohhh Ahhhhh…..:) After working through some pretty difficult problems in math today we had our last library class at Lincoln. We then shared our Social Studies presentations. Mrs. Thornburgh was thrilled that every group had their presentation ready to share today. We then worked on our presentation for 6^th Grade promotion.

This morning we jumped right back into school getting busy with numbers sense in math. We talked about different mental math strategies for multiplying big numbers. We worked some more on fraction pictures.

After lunch we had some time to read, before we started to work on our Letters to Lincoln presentation.

The last period of the day we worked on completing our social studies presentations.

Our 4^th to the last Friday in Sixth grade is now history. Hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

This morning in math we stretched our brains with something that looked pretty easy at first but was actually a bit of a challenge. We were working with fractions and geoboards. We all thought it cool that Mrs. Thornburgh even has virtual rubber bands. After lunch we went to choir. We are ahead in choir so we are going to get to play guitars and drums and sing at the Awards Ceremony on June 13. We took our spelling test and read our Letters to Lincoln. It was fun to hear everyone’s memories. The last period of the day we worked on our presentations for our geography project.

Tonight is the big Debate and Persuasive Speaking competition at the high school. Students involved have worked very hard on this. I am very proud of them. I know that they will do a fabulous job.

Letters to Lincoln and other regular homework is due tomorrow. (Hopefully you haven’t waited to the last minute to get started…J )

This morning in math we did some number talks. Was neat to see all of the ways that you could solve problems in your head. We also had a chance to ask questions about things we had seen on the MAP test. Some of those math questions are pretty far out there if we are testing above grade level. In the afternoon we went to Library. After library we worked on our presentations in Social Studies. We spent most of the afternoon working on this. We had a few minutes at the end of the day so a few of us shared our persuasive speeches. We were all very impressed.

Reminders: Some people did not do their Social Studies homework last night. They now owe double.

If you are going on the LaVenture field trip, you need to bring in your permission slip.

This morning we took the Math MAP test during math time. In the afternoon, we went to PE and then to a public library presentation about all the fun reading activities for us at the Public Library this summer. They have a program for middle school. We then got to use our brand spanking new BEST BUY wireless laptops to do a very fun geography activity. Mrs. Thornburgh had found photos from different places. We had to use clues from the pictures and good yes or no questions to figure out where the photo was taken. The fun part was that we were using Google Docs so Mrs. Thornburgh was answering each group’s questions online. It was a lot of fun and we had to work together and really think to solve the puzzles.

This morning Mrs. Thornburgh asked us when was it 1,000,000 seconds ago. Do you know? In math we reviewed using a review quiz we took yesterday. Hopefully being able to ask questions about things we weren’t sure of will help us do our best on the MAP test tomorrow. After lunch, we had a few minutes of silent reading and then we used a rubric to grade our Seattle paragraphs. Most of us did well on organization, but need to work on spelling and grammar. The last period of the day Mrs. Thornburgh gave us a quiz about geography. We didn’t do so well. Caytlyn had the best score. After we took the quiz, we played a map game on the SMARTboard. .

Algebra and Your Child’s Future: Community Math Night at the high school 5:30 Free Hot Dogs, 6:00 Ruth Parker begins. Call the district office for child care. There will be door prizes! Extra credit for anyone represented from my classroom.

This morning we all arrived at school a little pink faced after our sunny weekend. We got busy right away. Many of us are busy working on debate and persuasive speech. The tournament will be on Thursday.

In math we did some review work just to make sure that we remembered what we had learned in all of the strands. After lunch, we had some time to read quietly until the choir kids returned. Mrs. Thornburgh passed out homework and went over assignments. She then gave us time to work on our assignments. The last period of the day we did some geography review. Great to know where in the world we are.

Remember the Community Math night tonight at the high school. Should be a lot of fun.

Wild Waves money and permission slips due May 20

Hard to stay in doors on such a sunny day but we had lots to accomplish. This morning we took the long version of the Reading MAP test. When these scores are posted on AIMS it will hopefully give us a picture of the growth we have made this year. We will take the math portion on May 21. In math we took a strand test over what we have been working on in class. After music, we took our spelling and vocab test and then had a few minutes to work on some projects. We had an assembly where State Representative Dave Quall presented some books to our library that our librarian Bev Madlung received in a grant. We had a late recess and then we came back to ‘”chilax” (as Kelly said) in our class room and get a few more projects done before the end of the day.
