ThoughtWorks' Continuous Delivery Workshop

Join ThoughtWorks, renowned as one of the pioneers and leaders in the evolution and practice of Agile Software Development, as we present our Continuous Delivery workshop.

Who should attend? Those who want to close the gap between Development (Applications/Software Engineering teams), Technology Operations (Release Managers), and Quality Assurance (Testing and QA Managers).

Register below.

The importance of fast feedback on the production readiness of your application throughout the delivery process, and how to get it

How to improve collaboration between people involved in delivering software (developers, testers, and operations personnel)

Principles and practices that enable continuous deployment, including data management

How to automate testing and deployment

How to evolve your application without using version control branches

How to manage continuous delivery with large and distributed teams

How to transform your organization's delivery process to enable continuous delivery

Agenda

8:30am - 9:00am | Registration and coffee
9:00am - 10:30am

Some short case studies of typical delivery environments: ones in which releasing software takes a long time and is painful, and ones which continuously deliver new software. Root cause analysis of slow, risky releases

How Things Ought To Be, using examples from several projects

The value proposition of continuous delivery

Questions & Answers

10:30am - 10:45am | Break
10:45am - 12:00pm

A brief refresher on continuous integration, with particular reference to how to integrate it with the rest of the delivery process

Why branching in version control is inimical to continuous delivery. Using incremental development, a superior alternative to version control branching which allows for application evolution. Example from Go

Interactive exercise: take various architectures and team structures and discuss how to apply branch-by-abstraction to enable continuous delivery

Software Design in the 21st Century – An evening with Martin Fowler

NUS Institute of Systems Science and ThoughtWorks proudly invite you to an evening with Martin Fowler.

Software design in the 21st century

In the last decade or so we‘ve seen a number of new ideas added to the mix to help us effectively design our software. Patterns help us capture the solutions and rationale for using them. Refactoring allows us to alter the design of a system after the code is written. Agile methods, in particular Extreme Programming, give us a highly iterative and evolutionary approach which is particularly well suited to changing requirements and environments. Martin Fowler has been a leading voice in these techniques and will give a suite of short talks featuring various aspects about his recent thinking about how these and other developments affect our software development.

Cost: The event is free to attend, but seats are limited, so register today.

Agenda

18:00 - Registration, refreshments and networking
18:30 - Welcome & Introduction
- Lim Swee Cheang, Director / CEO NUS ISS
- Karin Verloop, General Manager ThoughtWorks Singapore
18:45 - "Transitioning to Agile" - Vivek Prahlad, Technical Principal ThoughtWorks Singapore
19:15 - "Software Design in the 21st Century" - Martin Fowler, Chief Scientist ThoughtWorks
20:15 - Refreshments and Networking

Speakers

Martin Fowler - renowned author, software consultant and speaker - brings two decades of experience helping corporations utilise object technology for mission-critical information systems. He has worked with clients like UK National Health Service, Chrysler, Citibank, Netscape and Andersen Consulting, pioneering object-oriented design and Agile methods. He was one of the authors of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development. He has written five books on software development, and collected a few awards for them. He's also a highly regarded speaker at international conferences, although these days he prefers to stay off the stage.

Vivek Prahlad is a Principal Consultant for ThoughtWorks Singapore. Prior to that, he was Delivery Manager at ThoughtWorks Studios, where he helped build Twist, a next generation Functional Testing tool. During his career, Vivek has also worked as a Technical Lead, Agile Coach, and Project Manager. Vivek is the author of Frankenstein, an open source testing tool for Swing applications.

Software Design in the 21st Century – China 2012

ThoughtWorks is touring around Brazil in June. Join us if you’d like to learn more about us!

ThoughtWorks is a company that has always been synonymous with revolutionary software and software practices. It’s likely you’ve read the work of our Chief Scientist Martin Fowler and evaluated some of our tools like Go and Mingle. What’s really defined our success is our ability to bring together technologists who are passionate about quality and business value, and possess the talent to deliver on it.

We opened our first office in South America, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in December of 2009. We have quickly reached the mark of 130 employees and are now opening a new delivery center in Recife, but we want more. We want to storm the gates of the old ways of delivering software and free our clients’ horizons, all the while keeping our minds on how to change the world for the better.

To do this, we want you.

Whether you have just started your programming career and are itching to tackle the big and interesting problems, or have been in the market for a while and are trying to find out even better ways to do what you excel at, we would love to hear from you.

Our main priority at the moment is to find developers and quality analysts who will become our next generation of references in technology in South America and in the world. You can find more details of our roles below:

Entry Level Developers, Porto Alegre and Recife
Entry Level Quality Analysts, Porto Alegre
Java/C#/Ruby/Python Developers, Porto Alegre and Recife
Test/Quality Analyst, Porto Alegre and Recife

If you are the kind of person who is always seeking new and complex problems to solve come to meet us while we are touring around Brazil in June.

What exactly is happening in at these evenings? We will start our activities with a presentation about our company trying to give you a little bit of the taste of what is feels like to be a ThoughtWorker. For those who like what they see, we’ll take the opportunity to give people the chance to take our assessments as the first step of our recruitment process.

While we usually start our hiring process with a telephone interview, we're mixing it up a bit and giving people the opportunity to take our assessments first. Many ThoughtWorkers consider them fun, although they are challenging.

After your registration we will send you the details about the event and the location - our event will take about 4 hours and everything you need will be provided. Just bring your passion for technology. And your brains.

If you are planning to attend, please fill in the form below.

Retail Game Changer Lunch Seminar

E-commerce and “one-click” shopping have dramatically changed the business environment over the past decade. Now, mobile technology, social networking and the “appification” of the Web are fundamentally challenging the business models of both traditional and online retailers.

However, with the domestic online share of total retail sales pegged at only around 4 per cent, many retailers now find themselves on the back foot and are considering aggressive moves in order to catch-up and recover lost revenue.

Before you lock in or start executing on your 2013-14 plans and budgets, consider this: what if you could provide the following value-added services for your customers?:

· A mobile app that transformed all in-store surfaces into interactive exhibits,
digital signage and self-service kiosks?

· A GPS-like app that provided unique, real-time in aisle experiences
during store visits?

A digital “loyalty card” that blended “gamification” principles and social
reputation scores with predictive analytics to provide targeted product
offers and group purchase coupons?

Social-enabled services that provide consumers with frictionless sharing
of shopping experiences?

A seamlessly joined Web, mobile and in-store experience that “morphed”
depending on the specific behaviours − and predicted needs – of an individual consumer?

Non-intrusive tools and services that intuitively align with existing consumer behaviour and shopping habits?

Join us to discuss the growing role of mobile devices, social media tools and apps, gamification, location-based services and “big data” in creating powerful customer acquisition, engagement and experience offerings that not only change your customers’ path-to-purchase, but also provide a platform for building awareness of – and integrating – your brand, products and services throughout the purchase cycle.

What you stand to gain by attending

Participants will gain insights into the latest in behavioural psychology and social and mobile technologies and learn how these insights can be combined to:

• Create innovative solutions to the problems of customer acquisition, product marketing, customer loyalty and “drive-by-pricing”.
• Provide part of the solution for re-designing online and in-store retail experiences to better match new consumption patterns.

About the Speaker

A business design and innovation consultant, Mark is ThoughtWorks’ Head of Strategy. He has worked with clients in many industries, including media, retail, financial services, superannuation, professional services, telecommunications and government.

With more than 15 years experience providing thought leadership on how the twin forces of emergent technologies and consumer behavioural change are reshaping business, Mark has a track record of helping clients re-imagine what is possible in their industry and make the most of today’s enormous opportunities.

Registration

We look forward to you joining us for lunch. There are only 15 seats available. Book your seat by contacting Robyn Gray at rgray@thoughtworks.com
or (03) 9691 6516 by Friday 1st June 2012.
