Welcome to Employee Spotlight, a thrEDIT original series featuring real-life thredUP employees. Eleanor, one of our Operation Supervisors based in Atlanta, shares her favorite style to wear during the holidays, and how she satisfies her boots addiction.

What do you do at thredUP?

I work as one of our Operations Supervisors in our Atlanta warehouse. Essentially, I oversee our fantastic Operations Team, which processes our customer items from start to finish. We determine quality, search criteria (is it a pullover sweater or a cardigan?), take photos, store the items, and process them for shipping!

You’ve been at thredUP for five years! What do you love most about working here?

thredUP is all about doing good! Is that too cheesy? Haha, I’ve been with the company for five years now, and I’ve been able to witness the goodness firsthand, within and outside of the company. What we offer our customers is great, and being conscientious of our impact on the environment is also a plus. thredUP’s also very focused on supporting the growth of their employees. Good folks and great company!

Why do you think #secondhandfirst?

It’s a way for me to shop and not feel like I’m failing at adulting because I’ve prioritized my obscene boot collection over grocery shopping this week. My family struggled a lot growing up and so I was raised to spend wisely. Shopping secondhand allows me the freedom to express myself fashion-wise while still taking care of business.

What percentage of your wardrobe is thrifted?

Girl, like 80%! The remaining 20% are Target impulse buys… gets me every time.

How would you describe your style?

Effortless. I run our AM shift which means I need to be at the facility by 5am. While I love clothes, I am not actually that dedicated to the cause because I love sleep more. I have my core items, and a handful (okay, a few handfuls) of statement pieces I use to spruce up my looks. A lot of my pieces are versatile, so I can adjust a look dependent on my mood (sweet, fierce, boho… you get the idea).

What was the best idea you scored on thredUP?

Have you heard of our Warehouse Outlet Sales? If you haven’t, you’re soooo welcome. I got a pair of Stubbs and Wootton flats that retail for $250 for… $5 bucks!!!

What are you looking forward to wearing most this winter?

All of it. As in all of my clothes at once because I am a huge baby in the cold. Haha! Honestly, VELVET. I really love velvet, but for some reason I only feel comfortable wearing velvet for the holidays…? I get that I can express myself any season, but I don’t drink eggnog in the spring (and the same goes for velvet).

The holidays are coming! What are you most excited for?

Alright, so I live in Atlanta now but I’m originally from Oakland, California, where it does NOT snow. Ever. Atalanta, however, gets like one day of snow a year, which is awesome! It’s always around the holidays, so my neighborhood literally feels like a Winter Wonderland because of all the decorations. I get the magic of snow without having to schlep through the months when snow isn’t so magical anymore.

Buh-Bye Bulky Outfits: How to Layer for Winter And Still Look Sleek

The winter blahs are real and so are blah winter outfits. Especially when you’re feeling uninspired and just grab all the layers you can fit on your body to fight the cold.

Thank goodness for our favorite fashionista and staffer, Cassandra! Follow along as she breaks down her go-to layering formula for a fab not drab winter outfit that has all the warm layers you need, without the bulk.

Hiya, Cass here! I don’t know about you, but I’m already over this cold. Sometimes (aka all the time) I just feel like walking out the door wearing my WHOLE closet (à la Joey from Friends). It’s hard to feel excited about dressing for winter when all my outfits look totally bulky. The winter frump is real, you guys, and we need to stop it.

It’s not that I don’t like layering. I love layering! I get more mileage out of my winter closet and, if you have an unpredictable body temperature like me, layers make it easy to adjust throughout the day.

To help you fight the frump, I’m sharing my go-to formula layer by layer as a warm-up for you (ha ha). This is a good work outfit AND it’s perfect for the weekends too. I typically pack my day full of as much stuff as possible, so it’s nice to be able to change up my outfit throughout the day depending on temps.

The Base Layer: Thin Turtleneck Top

For my first layer, I choose a thin cotton turtleneck. It stays close to the body for extra warmth and it’s a great layering piece that I love to wear under sweaters and jackets. It’s also perfect as a standalone item that can be worn tucked into a pair of jeans. I chose a patterned top to add a little zhuzh to my usually solid-colored winter wardrobe. Prints can make a stale outfit look brand spanking new!

The Cozy Layer: Thin Pullover Sweater

My second layer is where I add softness and warmth to my winter outfit. I picked a knitted V-neck sweater. It’s a bit heavier than the long sleeve but not super chunky, so I can still add on layers for more warmth. The V-neckline also lets me show off my striped print top underneath.

The Even Cozier Layer: Thin Cardigan

Every girl needs a soft cardigan in their closet! I treated myself to a cardigan from our Remade line (good for me, good for the planet, y’all), and I love it so much! That’s partly why I’m doubling down on the knits, really.

The key to all of my knit items is making sure they aren’t too chunky and are thinner knits like a tight rib knit. Rib knits also have a texture I really like. Thinner layers allow me to wear every piece and still lift my arms up! Also, if I get a bit chilly after I peel off all of my layers, I can throw on this trusty cardigan.

The Top Layer: Light Jacket

I usually break out my light anorak jacket for rain, but it’s weather-proof material works great for sealing in warmth as well! Like every item in my formula, it’s something you can to wear by itself on warmer days, AND it doubles as a layering piece over all of the knits that I’m wearing.

Feeling like all these layers are getting a bit bulky? I cinch the jacket drawstrings around my waist to add definition. You can do the same with a belt.

The Accessories: Beanie & Scarf

Accessories are super important for winter styling. Your face needs coverage too! I topped my outfit with a beanie to keep my ears warm and my hair down from flying everywhere in the wind.

For added warmth, I threw on a big wooly scarf that I can wrap around my neck and face when it gets super chilly. You can also carve out some definition to your silhouette with a belted shawl. I was in my twenties and could never have afforded it on my own. I never use it anymore but I still have it and cherish it. I always think about her generosity and today I try to take care of my things so I can gift or hand them to down to friends or family.

Would you recommend gifting secondhand?

YES!! It feels so good and every day we get closer and closer to it becoming the norm. It’s smart and cool to shop used and we should all be proud of the money we save and the good that comes with not contributing to more waste on this planet. The best way to help people get over the stigma of secondhand is to show them how great it is. Who is going to be upset about receiving a perfectly pre-loved Kate Spade handbag or wallet? Prob no one.

What’s your dream handbag?

My dream handbag is a vintage quilted Chanel single flap handbag. It’s totally unrealistic for my current budget, but maybe one day…

When and where did you get your first designer handbag?

I purchased my first designer handbag very recently from thredUP — go figure! I was at our distribution center in Pennsylvania for a video shoot, and I ended up doing a little shopping at one of our warehouse sales. I was browsing the designer handbag section, and I found the most perfect vintage leather CELINE crossbody bag. I knew it was the one as soon as I laid my eyes on it.

It needed a little love on the interior because the previous owner had left it a bit of a mess, but it was easy to clean up. Now it’s almost as good as new! I wear it with a smile almost every day. It’s a special memento that will always remind me of this chapter in my life.

Are you gifting secondhand this season?

100,000% yes. I have a list of people I want to get an extra special (aka Luxe!) gift for this year, but I don’t have a luxe bank account. Secondhand prices make it possible for me to gift alllll the fancy things. If you’re thinking of gifting luxury items this year, I would highly recommend considering gifting secondhand. You have much greater purchasing power in the secondhand luxury retail space than you do if you were purchasing new.

Party season is here! We love any excuse to glam up, and what better way to make an entrance than in a stunning dress? The only downside is that occasion dressing tends to leave a huge dent in the wallet. That is unless you’re stylish mama Tracy of lifestyle blog Knowing Tracy!

We challenged Tracy to style FOUR stunning dresses (including a designer piece), each under a certain price point. Read on to find out how she styled these stunning looks for intimate family events AND fancy cocktail parties.

The holiday season makes me so happy. I love being surrounded by positive vibes at holiday parties, where I can have meaningful conversations and meet new people.

This year, my calendar is full of dinner parties, family get-togethers, and, of course, quality time with my husband and my little guy, Kai. With so many events (and photos to take), one dress really can’t do all the work. With the help of thredUP, I was able to find four dresses that hit all four budget sweet spots. It was super easy, all I had to do was filter by specific lengths, styles, and price points on thredUP.

Under $15

Holiday parties are all about glitz and glam, that’s why I’m so excited to wear this lace and metallic detail dress! The boat neckline and lace accents give it a classic look that’s office appropriate but still eye-catching!

I reached for a pair of silver strappy heels for a cocktail party and a similar pointed pair for a work event. The metallic colorway highlights the bright shade and texture of this gorgeous dress. Solid or nude color shoes allow your dress to shine, especially when you are wearing lace.

It wouldn’t be the holidays without a bright red cocktail dress! I scored this lovely number for just $25 (yes, just $25). I’m totally in love with the strapless cut and lace detail, it’s so romantic! It’s definitely a holiday classic.

I paired it with my favorite Prada heels (also from thredUP!) to frame the bold shade of this gorgeous dress. Plus, the subtle details on my booties match the lace!

Under $50

I LOVE my new figure-hugging dress by Tadashi. It was just $45, and it makes such a big statement on its own. The off-shoulder silhouette adds a flirty touch, which is perfect for date nights with your love, while the knee length keeps it classic (perfect for office holiday parties). The metallic tones make sure you’re always in the spotlight, even when layered under a black coat!

To complete this outfit, I reached for my favorite fringed handbag. It’s chic and the shimmering sequins totally matched the gold tones. When I’m styling with horizontal striped clothing, I choose longer accessories to elongate my figure.

If you’re uncomfortable wearing form-fitted dresses but love the style, wear it with a chunky cardigan or blazer. This keeps your dress under wraps until you’re ready to flaunt it.

Under $100

I am so excited to wear this Moschino fit-and-flare little black dress. I STILL can’t believe I got it for under $100. Thrifting is the only way I get my designer fix (for me and my family)!

I love to highlight my shoulders, so the one shoulder detail has me all smiles. This dress is perfect for New Year’s Eve. It’s so stylish and easy to move around in, which is a plus for dancing. I paired it with these Prada mid-calf boots from thredUP (funnily enough, they were just a little over $100, too). Love my new finds!

Choose the filters you want to save (for example Prada bags under $300) or enter exactly what you’re looking for in the search bar. You can always find all your saved searches under the bookmark icon in the top navigation.

Tip #4: Use the Auto-Buy feature.

Handbags are a hot commodity around here. In fact, sometimes it only takes a few hours or less before an in-demand handbag gets snatched up in someone’s cart. If you want to see all the handbags that are in someone else’s cart, you can filter by In Someone’s Cart in the left navigation bar.
