With concepts ranging from the “studio as muse,” “virtual studios,” “street as
studio,” and “gallery as studio,” Studio Chicago invites participation from artists and the art-curious, beginning with Chicago Artists Month in October 2009.

Core Studio Chicago partners include: Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Columbia College Chicago, Gallery 400, Hyde Park Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and threewalls.

threewalls will be participating in the program through linking residents to The Studio through The Studio Chicago weblog, publications like Artists Run Chicago Digest, the summer symposium and summer residents.
Halfway through its duration, we asked the organizers of "In Search of the Mundane" to answer a few questions about the show and their other projects. Don't miss the exhibition's next event, "Envisioning One's Living Conditions: Tour of Anthony Elm's Artist and Exhibition Ephemera" tomorrow, November 1st, at 2pm.

“In Search of the Mundane” consists of a series of events on the art of living. There’s a number of activities that could have been included. How did you decide on the programming for the show?

InCUBATE: In general, the programming was chosen based on all of shared interests. We had done some of the activities together before and enjoyed (team trivia, boozy brunches), and others were activities one or more of us had always wanted (the food tour of Maxwell Street Market, the wine tasting). The Public Culture Lectures are part of a regular series of events we have co-organized in the past and which are usually hosted at the Orientation Center in Logan Square. The opportunity to base a series of events from threewalls has allowed us to share these things with a greater number of people, many of whom we weren't previously in contact with.

The thematic titles for each event are based in another shared interest of ours, Michel de Certau's book The Practice of Everyday Life. The titles are poached from the subheadings of sections within the book that have been particularly thought-provoking to us.

RS: Programming is always a balance among what you'd like to do and what is actually feasible due to budget and the availability and willingness of others to participate. In other words the decisions were highly pragmatic (in the most basic sense of the term).

The lecturers and guides involved in the events come from various fields and interests, which include art, as well as food, wine, and collecting. Have you found that the show has brought a different kind of audience into the gallery?

InCUBATE: It's always tricky to speculate about who's walking through the door. We can say that In Search of the Mundane has allowed us to meet people who've never been to an InCUBATE event before. Hopefully this series of events will show that the fields which many of them are based in are more permeable and open to non-experts than they might initially seem.

This exhibition relates to conversations in He said, She said, The Department of Aesthetics, as well as in the programming at InCUBATE. How has “In Search of the Mundane” expanded upon those conversations?

RS: It provides opportunities to literally expand them by increasing the number of potential participants. It also allows for a pragmatic (in the larger sense) test of the ideas and conversations in experience. It is also a useful test to see how the site of activities impacts the enactment and perception of them.

What are InCUBATE‘s upcoming projects, events, or plans?

InCUBATE: We're going through the selection process for our thematic residency in December. We also host one Sunday Soup Brunch a month. With Material Exchange and Adam Bobbette, we participated in an exhibition that's up right now in Buffalo, NY at CEPA Gallery called "Conversation Pieces." In December we'll head back for the closing to give away a grant. We'll also be launching the Artist Run Credit League this fall.

Randall, what‘s next for you?

RS: Just plodding along in search of meaningful experiences to share with others...

I have created a fictive firm called SoFiET (Science of Fiction Entertainment Technologies), which is like a movie production company, but not quite - its movies are made out of not more than a dozen frames, but it takes much longer to shoot them than a feature film. And the "technological" part is not what one may think.

Recently I have been working on two shows. One is a group show and prize at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, in October, for which I made a series of pinhole monotypes, printed with pigment, resin and gelatin on paper.

Another show is planned to be next year at the Museum of Photographic History in Krakow, through the Italian Cultural Institute.

And I am loving Chicago. I would like to come back soon (but late enough to let the winter pass).

What have you been working on during your residency?

I am trying to bring my previous work to a further step towards abstraction. I am taking images of Chicago, inspired by the Great Fire and the history of intense destruction/reconstruction of this city. These pictures are very blurry. I am trying to leave only a vague shape of what the subjects should be, in the same way that a fire consumes all the fine details of what it burns. It leaves only a shell which still has a hint of identity of the city. Occasionally, they seem to yield some homages to American Minimalism. And I like this a lot.

In your studio, the pinhole cameras that you’ve made are displayed just as prominently as your photographs. Can you describe the role of those cameras in your practice?

Before shifting my work towards pinhole photography, I have worked mainly with performance and installation, strictly related to the body and its presence in time. I have found pinhole photography to be an extension of this previous work: it involves the building of a device, a very intense relationship with time and a good deal of weird practices necessary to produce a final image (like going out at night taping suspicious looking boxes to posts and pick them up before the break of dawn), which some people might call performances...

How do you create the narratives behind your photographs?

That is the ineffable side of my work. They just hit me.

You’ve opened up your studio to the public, holding regular hours. How has this affected your experience here?

I forced myself to have regular hours... I can never be a gallerist. But I love having cookies and wine with my guests.

Connected by long sheet of green striped fabric, one performer stayed inside the gallery at a window while the other moved outside. The two spoke to each other about physical space and architecture through personal antecdotes and quoted texts.

Along with their performance, CamLab installed a social sculpture for the show. Stretching across most of the gallery’s backyard, the sculpture is sewn of articles of clothing and hangs at shoulder level. Visitors mingled neck-up through collars, waistbands, sleeves, and other natural openings within the stratum of black fabric.

Aug 3, 2009, "National Night Out Against Crime" at the front yard of Chicago Police District @ Palmer St & California Ave. It was impressive and refreshing to see all those happy neighbors with food, beverages, music, Michael Jackson and Elvis filling up the space where normally only police cars are around.

Kang-hyun and Kanghyuni are dancing in this video to Elvis's "Burning Love," but after this 30 seconds of dancing, they were asked not to do it again. In fact, it seemed like the organizers didn't want anyone dancing in front of the stage for some strange reason. One man complimented us and complained that "they are making us sit still like paintings," and then proceeded to get into a dispute with the organizer. We then decided to leave the scene.

This years Chicago Public School teaching artists and participants in THINKTANK will blog about their work stemming from this summer's workshops with threewalls summer residents and performance artists CamLab, Susan Lee-Chun, Gitte Bog and Kang-hyun Ahn. Documentation of those workshops can be found tagged "residents," but from here-on the CPS teachers will blog about their process of working in new performative or relational work as they create new projects at large in their community. The blog will act as an ongoing dialog and archive of their process and projects as they work towards a final presentation of documentation in an exhibition or publication format in 2010.

Follow them here under entries tagged CPS Thinktank!

-----
ABOUT THE SHOW:

In remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Harrowing Pepsi Shoot of 1984, the Tragic Heat Wave of 1995, and that August '09 sweat on your Midwest brow; in honor of the public swimming pool around the corner, the names of various Midwestern sports teams, the ice cream truck that is actually probably not a drug front, and the sweet rattle of window-mounted air-conditioning units; in praise of art and summertime and the rapid rise in regional mercury, BEN RUSSELL presents its third show in just as many months - BEN RUSSELL : BURNS

Following (hot) on the heels of last month's (smoking) success, an opening that was made complete with the romance of a simulated Mars-Moon eclipse in the cop-infested alleyway (via artists Roxanne Hopper and Julie Rudder), this month's scorcher features two artists and two artist duos of international persuasion. Break your sunglasses, skip the tanning salon, throw that 60SPF sunscreen in the trash and let the BURNS at BEN RUSSELL char to a crisp your inner and outer cultural selves. From the language-branded cowflesh of Chicagoan Diana Guerrero-Macía to the glow-in-the-dark smokebomb abstractions of Matt Hanner, from UK team Semiconductor's sun-flared NASA video grit to the campfire-replacement sculpture and damsel-in-distress performance of CamLab, BEN RUSSELL : BURNS will demonstrate unequivocally that, at least in Pilsen, the heat is on.

In keeping with the by-now time-honored BEN RUSSELL custom, opening-night attendees are invited to feel the (afore-mentioned) heat of the barbecue and bask in the chill of mild inebriation, while supplies last.

----

ABOUT THE SPACE:

BEN RUSSELL is a newly formed art space in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Co-curated by artists Brandon Alvendia and Ben Russell and situated around the front two rooms in the apartment of its namesake, BEN RUSSELL began presenting a series of month-long 5-person shows on Memorial Day Weekend in the year 2009. Participating artists are invited to produce and exhibit work that is in accordance with the title/theme of each show, the name of which will be derived entirely from the 10 letters in the words "ben russell." Future shows may include BEN RUSSELL : BLUENESS, BEN RUSSELL : REBELS, and BEN RUSSELL : BEER. In keeping with the structural conceits of the French Oulipo language group and the spatial and material limits of what is effectively a rented apartment, BEN RUSSELL maintains a set of restrictions for all exhibiting artists by which:

- One artist shall produce a wall-mounted work scaled at a minimum of three quarters of the thirteen by ten foot wall
- One artist shall produce a wall-mounted work at a maximum of one half of the opposing wall space between the two adjacent doors
- One artist shall produce a time-based work to be presented via a CRT flat screen monitor (and associated components) with Dolby 5.1 audio in the adjacent screening room
- One artist shall produce work to be installed in the all-weather sculpture garden
- One artist shall produce work to be performed for the duration of 15-30 minutes during the opening

BEN RUSSELL features a rotating roster of Chicago-based and non-Chicago-based artists and will be open for viewings one night a month and by appointment, as needed.

In the second week of the Thinktank workshops, resident Artist Kang-Hyun Ahn supervised the CPS Teaching Artists in the construction of a Kaleidoscope. After completion, the viewer looks in one end and light enters the other end, reflecting off interior mirrors. The CPS group made their Kaleidoscopes with colorful, patterned cardboards. The Kaleidoscope is related to hyperbolic geometry.
The Ren hosted this forum this afternoon with Philip Von Zweck, Lynne Warren, Chuck Thurow, Paul Klein and representing our team, Elizabeth Chodos. Many have stated before me that Chicago has this discussion rather regularly, which, given its repetitiveness, must mean that the question nags at the collective Chicago art-conscience.

In short, there was no agreed upon thesis (what makes a Chicago artist) although the idea that Chicago has a remarkable work-ethic and, perhaps by, extension, notable 'craftsmanship' in its practices seemed to elicit nods of acknowledgement from the panel and audience. Being labeled 'Chicago' is for some a positive, others a non-issue, and in the case of Thurow, perhaps an exciting possibility that Chicago is on the cusp of - that is, a time when Chicago artists would find an advantage in associating themselves specifically with this city, just as artists do, say, from Los Angeles or Berlin.

In regards to work ethic, it was suggested that one of the advantages to Chicago, is an ability to work here unfettered by a 'system,' perhaps a robust commercial scene, that puts specific demands on artists work. Without that golden-noose of the kind of patronage, say New York artists 'enjoy', Chicago artists take risks or make decidedly non-commercial art. At the same time, Warren expressed disappointment in the cities commercial galleries for not supporting enough experimental, risky projects in 'their back rooms' - something that makes exhibitions here too 'provincial.' No doubt there are those that will agree and disagree with that assessment, but it begs the question that if in fact Chicago did have these 'back rooms' that Warren laments, would we have the same art.

The conversation degenerated a little bit when the idea of 'rehashing' was raised, as the negative result to our not having any historical perspective (i.e. a common holding of Chicago art). This missing link seems to still dog many in the community looking for that elusive 'room' in one of our institutions dedicated to Chicago artists or a biennial of sorts to collect them up. Whether or not this missing link adversely affects the work made here or its ability to be taken into account outside of this community was not elaborated on, but it seemed clear by the tenor of the discussion that there still is a need to be acknowledged. Chicago artists, administrators, curators, collectors or historians-at-large are just not in total agreement on who and how and for ultimately, whose benefit that perspective is for.

There is vitality to our scene, that moderator Hamza Walker was careful to reiterate, that the margins are the center in our community, and with that is ushered in a certain kind of energy. When I asked the panel if Chicago (visual art) wants to or needs to be acknowledged or branded, and by who, in order to achieve some kind of tangible marker of its own value, influence or maybe even sexiness, Walker (in short) said our acknowledgment came internally. That is, it is the energy generated here in Chicago for our artists, exhibitions, projects, curators and so on, our cultural work and its workers, that, when done again and again, with integrity and vibrancy, will keep our scene vital and spread beyond our city limits.

Please feel free to leave your thoughts and insights.

- Shannon

Moderated by Elizabeth Chodos of threewalls.

Organizations that offer artists opportunities for contemplation, connection to nature and community appeared in the form of artist communes and colonies in the United States as early as the 1850's. Most contemporary organizations that house working artists for a period of time (ranging anywhere from one week to two years) have reworked the artist colony model into a newer formulation: residency programs. This seemingly nominal shift in vocabulary represents major ideological and methodological changes in art practices. Evolving art practices and increasing pressure on artists to develop resumes mutually influence the type of residencies that exist. Artist residencies throughout the country, including Ox-Bow in Saugatuk, Michigan, Artpace in San Antonio, Texas, and The Lower East Side Cultural Council, in New York, New York, demonstrate the various organizational structures that foster career development, a place for contemplative retreat, and a sense of community. The shifting and evolving forms of artist residencies demonstrate how this format offers responsive support for developing creative practices that range from the socially engaged and ecologically conscious, to craft based work and the production of discrete objects.

threewallsSALONS are an ongoing project that invites creative producers and thinkers into the gallery for an open-forum discussion about currents in contemporary visual art and culture. SALONS pose a discussion topic, gather a few key contributors and then open up the floor for discussion between those actively engaged in the 'question' and anyone and everyone who would like to come and be apart of the conversation. Discussions are gently moderated to keep the ideas flowing.

This year threewalls created the traveling exhibition Bellwether for participation in two exchanges: with Vox Populi, Philadelphia in July and with Alternator Gallery, Kelowna this past October. With the Philly show including work by Ann Toebbe (Chicago),Joseph Kohnke (Los Angeles), Bill O’Brien (Chicago), Lisa Boumstein-Smalley (Chicago), and Chelsea Tonelli Knight (Chicago).

Former Kelowna resident, Dan Anhorn's work was featured in the Kelowna press, and the work of former Philadelphia resident, David Coyle was also pictured in the Philadelphia City Paper.

A bellwether is a herald or a harbinger. ThreeWalls brings a group of artists, all based in or formerly based in Chicago, whose work imparts a kind of warning or predication. Riding the line of disaster prophesy, the work suggests both decline culturally and environmentally, as well as simultaneously deconstructing the meaning of art or the Avant-garde as a pilaster of faith in the abstract. Positioning a group of artists whose work creates disruption within the accepted narrative of modern art alongside work that proposes a menacing or hesitant narrative, Bellwether is both a document of current doubt and anxiety in the face of cultural disrepair, as well as a provocation from a group of artists working from outside the traditional poles of the Avante-garde.

David Coyle, Edgar Allen Poe, pictured left, Heather Mekkelson, Debris Field, put his out on the last, installation, pictured right.

Caleb Jones Lyons, Radio Stack, the dream is over, pictured left; Jenny Walters, Better Miller, pictured right; running perimeter of room: Duncan Mackenzie and Christian Kuras, Values Values Values

Submissions due: January 15th, 2009
Exhibition: February 20th – March 27th, 2009

In conjunction with the Southern Graphics Council Conference, threewalls is hosting an exhibition of political prints on cloth and we're looking for your DIY election T-shirts!

Please submit jpegs by January 15th, 2009 to Shannon Stratton at shannon@three-walls.org with your contact information and a short description of your T-shirt: where it was made, how many you made, how often you wore it, if you gave away or sold any of the shirts.

Obama T-shirt by Lee Tracy

The T-shirt, arguably considered an American invention, insofar as it is worn as one’s primary garment, and not an undershirt, became a substrate for advertising and political support in the 1950s. Since then it has played an invaluable role in the promotion of politics, sub-culture, music, leisure activities, businesses, sports team, personal slogans and more. The T-shirt is the walking, talking billboard – and probably still the most effective and inexpensive way to get a message out!

Perhaps in concert, printmaking and DIY are experiencing a significant revival. As an inexpensive medium for mass-producing a message or artwork, the hand-pulled print is making a major re-appearance as the most distinct way to promote bands, indie-movies, craft fairs, art events, book releases and rallies. The silk-screened T-shirt shares this appeal. As the election year heated up, the number of small-run T-shirts, printed by individual crafters and print collectives or one-offs by artists, designers or hobbiests ballooned. Nothing could be more American about the T-shirt as a vehicle for rhetoric: casual, commercial and accessible.

Dispatch is an exhibition of grass-roots political efforts, the millennial DIY ethic, micro-capitalism and the intersection between the commercial and craft in print media. As a document of the hundreds of T-shirts that were designed and printed by individuals (for their own use or to sell at craft fairs or raise money for campaigns), Dispatch makes visible, en masse, both the artistry and sheer multitude of designs that were made in support of the 2008 presidential and associated campaigns.

Chicago, both the root of the president-elect Obama’s campaign and a city with a strong grass-roots ethic in both the arts and politics, is a natural host to this exhibition. Dispatch draws on this, celebrating both the artistry and efforts of these makers, while drawing attention to how artwork and micro-industry became both an important form of participation in the millennial political process as well as a highlighting how the 2008 presidential campaign both appealed to and drew on millennial DIY culture.

As a companion to the exhibition and archive of the work, a catalog of the work featured at the gallery, with profiles and stories on a selection of artists about their prints, why they made them, where they wore them and how their garments may have made an impact on their community will be available.

A lot has changed over the summer at threewalls, including this new website that your visiting! We're very excited to have our web presence cleaned up by Neoteric Design, a small design firm in Chicago. Thanks to the Arts Work Fund we were able to make this happen!

Other news includes our move out of 2A, the renovations at 2D and the shake up of our residency program.

First of all - we'd like to welcome Scott Speh and Western Exhibitions to our floor at 119 N Peoria. Scott has moved into our original 2A location, and we're really happy to have him. 2A was where threewalls started in 2003/04 as a residency program. Last year we held our first year of 'SOLO' exhibitions in that gallery. But don't be confused, we are still programming SOLO, those exhibitions will just happen in 2D, just down the hall. The first SOLO exhibition for 2008 is Amy Mayfield, opening October 17th.

Second, we want to thank John Preus for the beautiful work he did on 2D, building out the front space into our new bookstore. You might recall a rather lame Ikea shelf functioning as a distribution area last year - well this year we are committed to the bookstore concept, with the 'lobby' of the gallery designed by John from repurposed building materials like old oak doors, shutters and part of the tree Material Exchange used in their spring exhibition. We'll be building our inventory over the next months, but please put the word out and come by for a look and sit on the swing to browse some books.

As for the residency - its gone 'mobile.' The apartment and studio are on the 3rd floor, and residents will be town both to do self-directed research as well as participate in thematic residencies. Those in the latter group will work with our staff in producing an exhibition or presentation in collaboration with other organizations or sites.

All of us at threewalls would like to thank you for your ongoing support! We look forward to seeing all of you this year!

- team threewalls.
