Facebook is Better Than Google+ for Friends

After using Google+ (invites here) for the last month I will admit it is interesting and pulls social networking into new terrain but I just don't see it replacing Facebook for connecting with friends. Google+ and Facebook both have status updates, photos, chatting and standard social networking stuff but they also have distinct purposes. Right now, Google+ seems to be geared towards broadcasting and sharing content while Facebook's focus is connecting and communicating with friends.

Your Friends are Already on Facebook

A social network is only useful if people use it. The majority of my friends (and family) are on Facebook including, surprisingly, many non-techy ones! Since the social networking sites don't play together nicely the first thing you have to do when you start a Google+ account is rebuild your network. That might be asking too much (especially for the less technical) since most people already have a completed, robust network on Facebook.

Have Facebook Will Travel

A mass migration from Facebook to Google+ is possible (remmeber Myspace?) but doesn't seem likely just yet. Facebook gained traction because it capitalized on Myspace's weaknesses and provided a cleaner experience. Facebook isn't doing anything wrong for Google+ to capitalize on and Google+, on the surface, seems like a technical version of Facebook and that doesn't appeal to regular users. Google+ is also missing a few social pieces to overthrow Facebook as the premier destination to connect with friends.

"Social" Networking

Liking your friends posts and checking out their baby pictures is all well and good but what about hanging out off the grid? If you're going to throw a party you can't create an event or send invites with Google+. It's likely that Google+ will one day support events and invites (hopefully integrated with Google Calendar because it runs my life) but as of right now it doesn't seem part of Google's social plan. Events are one of the stronger parts of Facebook - it's so easy to set up an event and fire off a few invites. I hope Google+ does take a stab at events one day but until then Facebook wins there.

There Can Be ~~Only One~~ Many

I know a couple of people have quit twitter and/or Facebook and are putting all of their social eggs in the Google+ basket. No one said there can only be one social network and we're starting to see different social networks build around niches. We've got LinkedIn (the a social networking for career minded professionals who send annoying email invitations), twitter (the social network for stalking celebrities and porn stars), and there's even a social network for knitting.

Google+ fits nicely in the social networking ecosystem and it's shaping up to be the place for content creators and power users to share content and discuss. I will probably get more engagement posting this blog to Google+ than I will on Facebook because Google+ is full of nerds (in a good way!).

So Google+ is great for sharing content and it's solid social offering from Google (finally!) but I just don't see it replacing Facebook for connecting with friends and family just yet.

I do think that Google+ is a huge threat to Tumblr but people will keep using it ironically.

Update: I was totally wrong about the engagement - way more comments and activity on Facebook for this post but then again 400+ friends on Facebook and I'm in less than 100 circles on Google+ right now so maybe that'll change.

iPads Suck!

Problem Apple?

I bought one of them iPads a couple months ago and after using it for a while I've identified some hueg problems...

Battery Life is Too Long
I only charge my iPad once a week and that's there's simply too much time in between charges. I like the comfort of being tethered to a power outlet and power cord.

They're Too Fast
With a long battery life I keep the iPad in sleep mode and it fires up instantly whenever I need it. Since there's no “boot up” I'm forced to find stuff to do with all the time I save. Also the the screen is a little too responsive to touch. With the other tablets I've used there was a slight delay so I could perform a few actions and sit back and pretend a ghost is in control.

Apps Are Too Easy
Installing apps is just too easy and there are too many to choose from. I'm used to the Windows Marketplace on my phone where there are only five apps too choose from which is totally less stressful and most of the time the apps don't work which results in even less stress!

Constructed Too Nicely
Sturdily constructed with high quality glass and metal? What's the matter Apple, are you too cool for plastic?

It's Too Comfortable
I miss the challenge of constantly adjusting myself in bed trying to read blogs off a laptop. I also miss the warmth of a laptop slowly cooking my balls.

The nub star

I don't want to post a blog about "not posting a blog in a while" because that's what everyone else does and I'm different (not really). So here a few websites where I've been wasting my time in between work and other projects.

Star.me
The Internet's ZeFrank star-ted this website where you can give stars to people and in return you get more stars. Most of the stars are strictly cosmetic but some are mini games too. The site seems very experimental so far and is quite light on the social networking aspects but that may be by design. The site doesn't seem groundbreaking (yet?) but it's fun seeing new stars and features added every few days.

Star.me kind of reminds me of collecting stickers or trading pogs from back in the day. It doesn't really have a point but it's still good fun.

Canv.as
Moot, the dude who runs the infamous 4chan, started a new website called "Canv.as". Many are drawing comparisons to 4chan because of the common "image board" format but Canv.as brings a new focus on creating original content rather than re-posting goat porn that everyone's seen a million times before. Also unlike 4chan the content on Canv.as is persistent and can be ranked. Posts can be can still be made anonymously but they're ultimately tied to a user account. Anonymity is cool but having a proper user account system does seem cut down on pedobears from using the site.

Canv.as reminds me of a game I used to play as a kid called "finish the doodle" where one person would draw a scribble and you'd have to make it into a complete picture. The game would end when somebody got fed up with playing and would just turn the doodle into a drawing of a dick.

Empire Avenue
Empire Avenue is a social media powered stock market styled game. Each of your social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, etc.) are assigned a score based on their size and activity which makes your Empire Avenue stock value go up and down. You can buy and sell stock in other people's accounts and generate a virtual currency known as "Eaves". It was kind of fun at first but the fun is definitely wearing off a month into it. I tune in every few days to re-adjust my investments as I try to rack up a million in net worth.

That’s Disqussting

I didn’t know it was an option but I went ahead and installed Disquss here on Threeblog. It let me import the old comments and it even syncs the comments to Blogger if I decide to stop using Disqusss in the future. I’ll probably end up using it for my other blogs with the exception of TrueNuff which will continue to rock the vBlog commenting system.

Next post will be a comic or something fun.

Life is Like a Bag of Runts

Who the hell buys so many runts they have to store them in sandwich bags? Is there some kind of underground runts dealing that I don't know about!?

I had the day off of work on Friday but managed to work pretty intensely on freelance projects and tax stuff so I took the weekend relatively "off". I dealt with some web hosting issues, squeezed out a TrueNuff Comic strip and got to play with some tech toys...

I tried the Nintendo 3DS at one of them demo booth kind of things. The 3D effect is pretty neat and it's amazing it works without glasses. After playing my vision seriously felt messed up for a half hour or so and I only played for about five minutes total. The augmented reality stuff is impressive but it kind of lags. I bet the successor to the 3DS will have that stuff nailed. Overall the improved graphics and new features are kinda neat but I'm probably not going to bother getting one. I'll stick to rocking my old Nintendo DS Lite as there is literally a buttload of games I still haven't played.

I also checked out iPads/tablets at the store. I thought tablets were stupid a year ago and didn't really see the appeal. They're not as powerful as full-fledged computers/laptops, you couldn't use it to build a website for example, but making content isn't really the purpose of tablets as they're geared towards consuming content. It's much easier to kickback and read blogs in bed off an iPad than awkwardly off a laptop or netbook (unless you got a lap desk and a mouse that works consistently on bedsheets). I also tried the Motorola Xoom and it wasn't bad. It seemed kinda heavy and like all the other non Apple tablets the interface felt just a touch laggy. Not sure what Apple is doing with iPads but it's working.

Good weekend overall and I think I needed the time off since I've been going pretty hard with the extra work after work. The freelance stuff I'm wrapping up should end up in my portfolio and I might blog about it at my design blog that's currently in development. I've been preparing preliminary content for the blog but I'm struggling between targeting it for clients or other designers. It'll most likely end up a combination of both so I'll just have to choose appropriate categories I guess.

TrueNuff Gaming Nights & eBay Auctions

It’s been kinda quiet over here for the last couple weeks - I’ve been grinding on the freelance projects after work and that doesn’t leave me much time to do anything else.

Last weekend I busted out a spray tag for the WTF Gaming guys that you can download from the WTF Gaming Forums. I’ll be doing more toons for WTF Gaming in a couple months that should result in more sprays - looking forward to that.

Speaking of gaming we’re having another TrueNuff Gaming night this Friday. A couple weeks ago we played Team Fortress 2 on the WTF Gaming server and it was a blast. This week we’ll be playing the classic (but still fun) Counter-Strike: Source and WTF Gaming has been kind enough to set up a TrueNuff server. If you don’t have Counter-Strike: Source it’s pick it up at Steam for $20, you can download it digitally and it runs on Macs now too.

~~I also put up some ebay auctions last weekend and there’s a couple days left to place bids.~~

I’ll make sure that the next couple of posts are drawings or something creative so this blog doesn't get too bogged with these “update” posts.

Website Updates

I managed to sneak some time in over the last couple weeks to do a few minor website updates.

ToonTags & DisplaySkins got an update to their “under construction” pages and they now have their own sub/follow options so I’ll probably won't talk about them here on Threeblog until they launch.
Threeboy Design got a "social media" update with prominent sub/follow icons and I’ve brought back the email subscribe option. If you were on the old “mailing list” from years ago this is completely different so sign-up again if you’re interested in keeping up with my graphic design adventures.
I signed up to Tumblr to see what the fuss was about - as it turns out not much. To be fair I haven't used it much so I’ll mirror some of the Threeblog content (mostly pictures) over there to see how it does. I’ll keep the boring text stuff here here where no one reads it.

I also helped Adam Mac with the header graphic for his blog and you might also be interested in the forum signature I made for him seven years ago today (okay not really, but that would have been cool).

Goals for this weekend: Make some major move on a client’s web project, design a flyer for another client, finish the edits for the TrueNuff.tv “Transformers” sketch (that we filmed last year), post a new Truenuff Comic and win a hot dog eating contest.

Gonna start bloggin' again.

I had a Newspro powered blog on threeboy.net back in 2001 where I'd post pointless one-line blogs about the stuff I was doing at the time. The blog software got converted from Newspro to Coranto, Znews, Wordpress, vBlog (the software blog that powers TrueNuff Blog) and then I decided I don't want to mess around with blog software anymore so now I'm on Blogger.

This blog will be updated sporadically (like all my projects) and it should feature a nice mix of stuff. Drawings, life nugglets and whats-on-my-mind stuff that's too long to poop out on twitter. I won't be importing any old blog posts because they were durmb as hell.

I'm starting a design blog too but I want to keep that separate because I might have clients reading and I can't drop fuck bombs there because it doesn't seem professional. If they're reading this blog it's their own fault.

Also, I'm using the domain threeblog.ca because squatters suck one million dicks.
