It comes when you least expect it

I have been extremely busy this week!!! I haven't even had time to blog and I apologize for not uploading my other designs. You see, I had the opportunity to freelance. I started this week. It is for an e-book. They needed someone to color the illustrations, so I got my Crayola and started coloring! Just kidding! They had to be vector ;) So, that is what is keeping me busy aside from work! The funny thing is...about a month ago, I was desperate to get a part time job! I told myself, "Anything...any job will do!!!" I didn't find an opening so I stopped looking. Then BAM! Freelance came knocking on my door! I did not expect it at all. At first I was hesitating on taking it but I remembered that maybe this was the answered prayer for my looking for that second job! So I took it! hehe... I thank my dad for introducing me to the person who I do freelance for.

Work...work..work...it has been busy. It is nothing out of the ordinary though. The reason why it is so busy is because we are on our ship week. Everyone in production is always running around like crazy trying to get everything in for this week. Goooood times!!! :)

Underdog

Have you ever been the youngest in a group? An example may be the youngest in your family or a group of friends. Ever since I started working, I have been the youngest employee.In a way, I feel like the underdog. Some look at me as a kid just playing around at work and some have looked down on me for doing my job. Overall, I feel that I have been blessed with the opportunity to work at offices that gives me the experience and knowledge to move forward. I may be young but my determination and passion to everything I do is exceeding. I do not take any credit for any success I have because I give all the credit to God.

Design with Importance

The picture above is one of my very first design I did in college. It is a Unicef Poster. Our objective was to create a poster relating one of the issues Unicef had on their site. I chose poverty and hunger with children. My heart goes out to them. I believe I did a good job conveying the message. I definitely enjoyed working on this. During this time, I was still experimenting. Believe it or not, this was only done in Photoshop! Can you believe it?! It took me a while but I was enjoying every minute of it. I'm so glad I know how to work in Illustrator and InDesign now! All three programs - Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are very helpful to creating great design! I entered this to our college art show and it won first place for Graphic Design Category. Yay! Until now, this poster is still one of my favorites.

Football Field Girl

Mmmm...High School Years! Nothing is more fun than being in high school! Go Cardinals!

I haven't been out of high school for that long. It has only been three years but I sure miss it though! During my freshman year, I was quiet and shy which are the results of not knowing anyone since we moved to a different city and district. I felt like a girl with no rain boots while everyone was wearing theirs. Anyway, we're not here to talk about my feelings.

I entered a contest held by the Art Club. I thought I would give it a shot since I love to draw. It was a football field design for our Homecoming Theme - Midnight Masquerade. The image on the left is what I submitted. I won! Yay! Soon, people started noticing me. The following year, they decided to make me the official football field designer instead of making a contest. My reputation as an "artist" (I didn't know the different between design and art back then) spread around the campus. I would see students try to get a peek of the design before the game. Some were quite excited! Some may have even peed on their pants, took them off to dry off, put them on and peed again!!! Well, at least I wish someone was that excited. One time, I overheard two girls call me the "Football Field Girl" while discussing the design. I guess they had a nickname for me...I continued to make designs for the school. I went from entering a football field design contest to designing the front cover of the school's handbook and designing t-shirts for clubs. It was an exciting time and a great exercise for being comfortable having my designs viewed by hundreds of people. The designs in this blog are examples of what I have done.

This was the second football field design I did. With the help of the art club members, we were able to create the design by only looking at my 8.5" x 11 final sketch.

I also created the front cover of the handbook. It was exciting to see my design in everyone's folders.

Some girls are not meant to wear thongs - the same applies with Design

I was an artist, an animator for a short while, and then a graphic designer. Art is in my blood. My dad passed on his artistic pencil when I was only four years old. Since then, I had fallen in love with drawing. Growing up, I would see my dad do scenes of 2D animations. I was inspired. I knew from the moment I saw him doing marvelous animations, I wanted to be an animator. A few years after, I went to college being certain I wanted to be an animator. I soon realized that it was not as I expected. I was taking 3D animation classes and it was way too technical for me and there were not a lot of “artistic” skills involved. It simply did not fit me. I guess it was not meant to be, just like some girls are not meant to wear thongs. Then I started to notice the beauty of design. I started taking classes and the more I learn, the more I get into it. I felt like a teenager who just tried on her first bra. It was uncomfortable at first, but once she found the right size, it was a marvelous experience.
Now, I am 21 years old. Still learning and understanding design and the creative side of it. I have one more semester left for my Associate Degree for Graphic Design. I am still debating with myself whether I would finish my Computer Animation Degree or just leave it and graduate with my Graphic Design. Anyway, while going to school, I am also working as an Ad Coordinator at one of the most known magazine in Arizona. So far, the experience I have gained is incredible and I am very grateful for the opportunity.
My ultimate goal is to be one of the youngest Art Director in the design world preferably in Advertising or Editorial. This blog will take you to my journey to reaching my goal. I will also post some of my first design to my most recent projects. I encourage everyone out there to help me be an Art Director. Whether you are in the field or an ordinary John Doe who seem to read this blog for the first time, please give me your feedback because you will definitely help me a lot.
