It’s Never too Late to Say, “Thank you!”
Thank you for giving from the heart in November and December to three locally based non-profit organizations that are near and dear to us at thump!

Many of you helped fill up the Operation Elf Box at the front of the shop to provide new toys for area kids in need.

Many of you purchased the Oregon Natural Desert Association’s 2012 landscape calendar at thump, and 100% of the proceeds went directly back to ONDA to help protect and preserve public lands East of the Cascades.

And many of you in December were taken by and purchased the amazing art and coffee mugs created by young Zambian orphans who live in the Vima Lupwa Home. 100% of the proceeds from your purchase will go directly to help offset the operational costs of running this non-denominational home, which serves some of Zambia’s neediest children. Most amazing is that this home was founded by Bend resident Malerie Pratt when she was only 19 years old!

To learn more about how these three local organizations make a difference locally and internationally, please go to: www.operationelfbox.com, www.onda.org and www.lupwahomes.org.

Ethiopia Yukro is a newer coffee to us at thump and to Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Come in and explore it with us!

Flavors: A floral aroma reveals a sweet, clean cup with distinct notes of navel orange, peach, lemon, black cherry and raspberry bordered by the taste and texture of white tea.

Stumptown shares: “The treasure chest that is the Western Ethiopian region of Agaro, Gera (outside of Jimma) has yielded another brilliant gem for Stumptown. The 240 farmer members of the Yukro cooperative process their coffee cherry on a Penagos 500 demucilaging machine. After removing the fruit with friction and mechanical bristles, the coffee beans were soaked overnight to increase ripe fruit flavors. They were dried in the warm African sun until they hit the 11% moisture mark.”

“Yukro, in the village of Wanja Qarsa village in the Gera District of Jimma zone in Western Oromia, resides on the road between Nano Challa and Duromina, two other recent additions to the Stumptown arsenal. A single 5km gravel road supports a village population of 4269 with one grade school, a health clinic and a hydroelectric plant. Pristine evergreen jungle forests surround this remote place. Although coffee and honey production propel the local economy, farmers also grow a diverse selection of crops, including spices, grain, avocado and cereals, while they raise livestock as part of sustainably managing their forests. Coffee thrives within the naturally cultivated conditions which include plenty of shade trees and focused crop diversity.”

To learn more about this coffee, please go to Stumptown’s website.

Throughout February, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend exhibits a collection of Great Basin photos shot by Bend-based professional photographer Zack Jones, whose clients include bicycle companies Trek and Burley, as well as several magazines. Thump will not be open late for First Friday Art Walk this month.

“From sitting in my garden with a refreshing beverage to guiding bike tours around the world, I have kept a visual record of the places, people, creatures, and adventures I have experienced in photographs,” says Jones. “The prints shown at Thump Coffee are a selection of images from the Great Basin, a place of both quirky and sublime beauty.”

Jones explains that he is not a “purist,” instead embracing the tools of modern technology to make and share images as he sees them in his mind. “I see these tools as brushes and paint to a painter and find the true art in knowing how and when to use them,” he explains.

Sun. 1/1: New Year’s Day- Thump CLOSED!
Wishing you a Healthy, Happy, Prosperous 2012!

Fri. 1/6: Open Late for First Friday Art Walk. We hope to see you at the January Art Walk!
Some of the youngest artists ever to show at thump will be represented. The River Song Montessori School student art show, “Vision of Peace” a collection of acrylic paintings created as part of an ongoing study of world peace leaders, will cover thump’s walls. Also for First Friday ONLY, “The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama,” multi-media prints will also be on display in thump’s breezeway.

Fri. 1/13: Happy 5th Birthday Thump
Thank you friends for keeping thump a thumpin’!

Traditional Cappuccino Happy Hour, Every Friday 2:30-5:30pm If you’ve never tried a traditional espresso drink – a doppio, macchiato or cappuccino – make sure to join us on Friday afternoons when we offer them for 50% off! It’s a great way to cap the week and roll into your Friday evening.

featured cup: Single Origin Espresso, Guatemala Finca el Injerto, Bourbon, Direct Trade
Flavor: Raspberry embedded in notes of chocolate, mild lemon and cardamom with a vanilla finish. Pairing it with milk accentuates the nouget and caramel sweetness in the espresso.

We’re thrilled to finally offer a single origin espresso that rivals Stumptown’s delicious Hair Bender espresso! Hair Bender espresso is a blend of up to eight different coffee beans from origins around the world, whereas the Guatemala Finca el Injerto Single Origin Espresso uses coffee beans from just one coffee farm, Guatemala’s famed Finca el Injerto. Like Hair Bender espresso, Guatemal Finca el Injerto S.O.E. also has a roast profile that is carefully developed specifically for espresso brewing. Thump is now using this single origin espresso in all of our traditional espresso drinks: doppios, macchiatos and traditional cappuccinos. But if your interest has been piqued, feel free to request it in any of our espresso drinks!

Artists Needed to Adopt Mosaic Materials
Thump’s beautiful, colorful, cups and plates are well loved and from time to time need to be retired. Instead of sending them to the landfill, we hang on to these chipped treasures and offer them up to those with a creative re-use idea in mind, like a mosaic! If you are interested in these cups and plates, please contact Hazel to arrange a time to pick them up. She can be reached here.

Find Your Wish on Flickr
The wooden planks swaying from thump’s ceiling capturing brief wishes from passersby, are as much of what makes thump, thump as any delicious drinks we serve.

Throughout January, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend hosts the River Song Montessori School Student Art Show, “Vision of Peace.” For First Friday Art Walk, January 6 only, the school will also present “The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama,” multi-media prints.

The acrylics on canvas paintings displayed in “Vision of Peace” were painted by River Song children, ages three to six. These works were created as part of an ongoing study of world peace leaders including the Dalai Lama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Maria Montessori. According to River Song, “This January show is in honor of our great peace ambassadors and their contribution toward justice and peace for humanity.”

The children’s art will be auctioned in February. Funds from the auction will contribute to the development of a scholarship fund for community families, an organic hot lunch program and classroom materials.

River Song purchased “The Missing Peace” prints with a goal of collaborating among local schools to develop a values-oriented curriculum for children ages 3-6 to accompany the artwork.

Have you ever wondered what happens to those wishes or how many have been created? Well, local artist and “Wishes” installation creator Mark Bernahl rotates the wishes every couple of months, adding new ones, removing old ones. He has kept every single wish that has been rotated out since the “Wishes” inception more than four years ago! And, he has scanned them! You can view more than 5,000 of them here. If you wrote a wish sometime in the last four years, go to our Flickr site and see if you can find it. Over 5,000 and counting are on the site! And . . . let us know if your wish came true!

ART: Ongoing “Sharing The Road” Poster Series Display
The “Sharing the Road” poster series depicts what drivers and cyclists can do to avoid accidents. A $5000 grant was awarded to the Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization to inform cyclists and drivers and help prevent crashes on our roads. City of Bend, citizens, advocates and employees worked as a group to get bike riders asking: “Am I doing this right?” and “Is this safe?” and “What are the rules?” The Posters to Coasters campaign, designed by Carrrrrlos, does that in a visually striking way. The campaign consists of posters, coasters and video. The prominent concerns with riding a bike in Bend are wrong way riding, drunk riding and night riding without lights. These actions cause the most cycling injuries and fatalities nationwide.

Thump Brewing Equipment, Travel Mugs & T-Shirts
We’re fully stocked with new t-shirts and thump porcelain travel mugs, as well as grinders, coffee/tea presses – check out the display at the front of the shop.

Panama Duncan Estate, Organic, Fair Trade returns to us from year to year. In this most recent growing season, the producer of this coffee, Ricardo Koyner, experienced especially challenging wet weather conditions that threatened his crop. Diligent attention to his coffee and careful use of organic fertilizer helped Koyner overcome the challenges presented by Mother Nature.
