From Kent: The project was chartered by the Downtown Bend Business Association (DBBA) in collaboration with Commute Options. It will be the first on-street bicycle corral in Bend, and is being billed as a pilot project.

The goals were:
1) To promote Bend’s image as a “Bicycle friendly community”
2) To clear the sidewalks for pedestrian access
3) To optimize parking utilization
4) To encourage bicycle commuting

The total price tag for the project is about $3500, about two thirds of which have come from the private sector, and 18 individuals in the cycling community. The remainder of the funding has come from the DBBA and Commute Options. It will be completed at no cost to The City of Bend.

Numerous people from the City, DBBA, Commute Options and local businesses have donated their time, efforts, talents and resources to make this happen. Without their persistence, it may never have come to fruition. Being the first of its kind, here in Bend there were a lot of details to be worked out.

The DBBA bicycle committee is also working on another project to increase the on-sidewalk bicycle parking options. We will install the first 5 racks soon, with the possible addition of another 25 next spring. These were also funded by private individuals in the cycling community.

Can skateboarding and street art become instruments of peace between Arab and Israeli youth? That’s the mission of Euijin and Nathan Gray, local artists and founders of a new nonprofit group, The Bedouins, which will exhibit “Yallah! Artivism for Peace” throughout September at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend.

“‘Yallah! Artivism for Peace’ validates art as a vehicle for creative expression with a positive purpose,” explains Nathan Gray. Building off a previous project between skaters from Israel, Jordan, and Palestine, The Bedouins was founded in 2009 by the Grays to “develop creative projects that inspire humanity.”

For the Grays, skating art is about making connections through a common interest. Having grown up in Saudi Arabia, Nathan offers that “focusing on human experiences across divides holds potential where politics fails.”

Nathan believes that “skateboarding in its essence is about abolishing rules, flipping the script, and transforming something wasted and desolate like islands of concrete or road barriers into something positive. In this vein, skating is about transforming entrenched prejudices and misunderstandings.”

“Yallah! Artivism for Peace” is the first of a series of events meant to raise money to bring the Arab and Israeli skaters to the United States for a national tour, intended to share alternative perspectives of the Middle East using a grassroots approach. Read more at www.theBedouins.org.
