Art quilts and fiber art works by local artists group Journeys are on display throughout July at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend. July is designated as fiber art month every year at Thump, in honor of owner Hazel Chapple’s mother and celebrated Ohio fiber artist, Anne Hubler, who was the first fiber artist to show work at thump with her July 2008 exhibit. The designation also honors the Sister’s Outdoor Quilt Show, the largest in the country.

Journeys is a group of local women who “seek to express our passion for art through creating and sharing the love of quilts and fiber arts.” The group defines art quilts as original work, consisting of fabric, layered and stitched together.

“We seek to stretch ourselves and each other to move beyond the boundaries of traditional quilt making, each of us developing our own unique style in fiber art. We aim to go beyond the expected and to explore new dimensions, techniques and materials to make new and unexpected original works of quilt art — and to have fun doing so,” writes Journeys in its group artists statement for the exhibit.

Stumptown’s first Direct Trade relationship coffee continues to delight us. Delicious! Stumptown writes: “YES IT IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER! Our Finca El Injerto 100% Bourbon coffee comes from Guatemala’s famed Huehuetenango region tucked away just below the Mexican border. Arturo Aguirre and son Arturo Jr. process their coffees with an eye for detail. Not one step in the quality process is skipped beginning with cherry flotation and extended fermentation to soaking, drying and proper storage. The Aguirre’s commitment to their coffee crop results in consistent quality, year after year. We are proud that it is our most popular single origin coffee. Fragrance of jasmine evolves into flavors of dutch chocolate, roasted almonds, meyer lemon and plum finishing with chamomile tea like grace.”

With the return of Guatemala Finca el Injerto, Stumptown’s first Direct Trade relationship coffee, it seemed like a good time to share a bit about what Direct Trade is and how the producers of Finca el Injerto embody the attributes of a Direct Trade coffee producer. It starts with the efforts of Stumptown’s green coffee buyers who scour the Earth searching for exceptional coffees, investing sometimes years into developing relationships with coffee producers before a single bean makes it to Stumptown’s roastery. In addition to locating a marvelous coffee, they look for producers who use impeccable and sustainable growing, harvesting and processing practices and pay their workers sustainable wages. In turn, Stumptown rewards these coffee producers generously for their efforts, at a minimum, 20% above Fair Trade prices!

Direct Trade Coffee from Finca El Injerto

Stumptown pursues these relationships with the long term in mind. In some instances, Stumptown’s green coffee buyers may find a coffee that is a diamond in the rough. Their in-depth knowledge of the technical aspects of growing, harvesting and processing coffee helps them guide up-and-coming coffee producers to fine tune their practices to ultimately yield an outstanding coffee — and to command a premium price! This does not happen over night, but over the course of multiple visits throughout the year, year after year.

The folks at Stumptown wrote an detailed article describing how the producers of Guatemala Finca el Injerto, Bourbon Varietal, Direct Trade go to great lengths to produce an exceptional coffee. This article illuminates a passion for quality, meticulous detail and innovation. Read this article, and as you sip the fruits of their labor, raise your cup in their honor!

From the first conversation I had with Leah (a phone call for an available position at thump) during which she mused out loud that the actual interview might involve some sort of Survivor-like reality TV barista challenge, I knew that thump was the right fit for her! The wit that came through in our first conversation resonates throughout all conversations with Leah! You just find yourself cracking up!

After graduating from college, Leah took a road trip. Destined for Alaska, she was sidetracked to Banff, Canada. Dwindling cash funds led her south, visiting all the friends she knew, until she ran out of money in Eugene, OR. She was broke and needed a job — but not in Eugene. She headed to Bend, and the place she knew she would fit in and gain employment was Mt. Bachelor. “The place,” she said, “where you can’t make enough money, so you can’t ever leave!”

A native of Colorado, Bend has now been home to Leah for longer than any place she’s lived. “It feels like I was meant to be here,” she said. When she first arrived, Leah remembers Bend as a “… sleepy mill town where people weren’t recreating! I felt odd going for a run and assumed the river was a toxic waste dump because nobody was in it! Coming from Colorado, everyone was in the river!” She appreciates “… how cool Bend has become and that there’s such a diversity in jobs that are not solely dependent on tourism and the lumber industry.”

Prior to joining us at thump, Leah jointly started and expanded a local business for 14 years while raising 2 children. She also started to explore a career as a doula assistant but put that on the back burner as it was challenging to try to juggle running her business, raising her children and taking up to 36 hours at a moment’s notice, to support parents-to-be through the childbirth experience. Leah sees herself possibly returning to the doula profession as it, “… brought out the best in me” she said. “I would come back from working for 36 hours and be on cloud 9!” Providing Hospice care also has its appeal to her. She’s drawn to working with the “… passages of coming in and out of the world.”

Thump has been so fortunate to attract employees whose passions, talents and accomplishments bring life to our shop and Leah is no exception! We’re so lucky that Leah has joined us at thump!

Caturra & Catuai varietals, grown in Costa Rica and roasted by Stumptown Coffee to produce our featured coffee, Montes de Oro Direct Trade.

A favorite from last year has returned: Costa Rica Montes de Oro Direct Trade! The folks at Stumptown write: “The Gamboa Chacon family has produced coffee in the Tarrazu region since the 1800s. In 1977, Tuto Gamboa began managing his family’s farms and acquiring new land for coffee cultivation. With premiums paid for exquisite quality for the past three years, Tuto and his son Emilio purchased their fourth farm: Finca Teresita. Emilio ensures strictly ripe cherry and fully washes it with INGESEC technology. The coffee is gently dried on African beds to increase mouth feel. The taste and texture of honey completely envelops ripe cherry and fresh peach in this sweet bright cup that finishes with juicy tangerine.”

From the Coffee Farms of El Salvador’s Aida Batlle, coffee cherry tea is a fruity “infusion” similar to hibiscus, prepared by steeping dried, ripe coffee cherry fruit. The tea is delicious served hot, or iced, and is caffeinated. These coffee cherries were dried at their peak ripeness on the small coffee farms owned and operated by renowned El Salvador coffee producer, Aida Batlle.

Coffee Cherry Tea is a traditional drink of Latin America, Yemen, Ethiopia and the Middle East. To learn more about Aida Batlle, her award winning coffees and innovative coffee growing practices, please revisit our Dec. 2008 thumpology article: http://thumpology.com/2008/12/coffee-producer-from-el-salvador-aida-batlle-stumptown-owner-duane-sorenson/

Paintings from the Art for India fundraiser for local nonprofit Rise Up International and a retrospective of Commute Options Week posters all share the spotlight in June at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend.

Created as part of the fundraising effort for Rise Up’s schools in India, the Art for India paintings are pieces of a forty foot canvas painted in September by 20 local artists and students. “At the event people have the opportunity to purchase small or large pieces of the canvas,” explains project organizer and local artist Shari Foster. “You literally pick which chunk of the canvas you want and it is cut out and matted for you.” The goal for the Art for India Fundraiser is to raise money, resources, and awareness for Rise Up’s three schools and nine orphanages in India. Works from Art for India will be on display throughout the month.
Also in June, Thump celebrates 20 years of Commute Options Week — and the art that inspires and encourages the Central Oregon community to participate every year. “To help promote Commute Options Week, various artists and designers have been commissioned to capture the look and feel to celebrate Commute Options by developing a poster, prominently displayed throughout Central Oregon leading up to and during our annual Commute Options Week.” says Jeff Monson, Commute Options executive director. Commute Options Week is June 21-27. “Each artist depicted images of walking, biking, carpooling, and buses in their own artistic fashion.” Mare Schelz, John Hilmer, Lisa Wachs, David Wachs, and Robert Bissell are among the many featured artists who have creatively supported Commute Options Week throughout the years. This exhibit will also hang for the entire month.
