Happy New Year Everyone!

We are hoping that 2012 is a prosperous year for everyone. There are certainly things to be optimistic about.

The New Year is already full of activity for the Thunderhook Crew. Debbie, David, Al, and myself are busy getting brochures, DVD's, sportshow booths, and travel arrangements ready for the sportshow season. For those of you who aren't aware the 2012 Sportshow Season begins this Friday January 6th in St. Charles, MO. It is an All Canada event ( a show for those of you looking specifically to go to Canada next summer for your fishing vacation). They do a great job putting on the show every year and it is a great time even if you are just looking around.

Although there is upwards of a foot of ice on many nearby lakes, ponds, and streams it has not been all that cold as of recent. However, spirits remain high that we will get a bit of snow to make a "White Christmas."

Ok.... I promise to keep the blog up to date from now on throughout the season. This Spring has been exceptionally busy at Thunderhook along with the fishing as usual.

Several Parties at the Smoothrock Camp on Smoothrock Lake, Ontario have caught Northern in excess of 45 inches with a couple being right at 50 inches. Walleyes are biting as usual on just about anything. The typical areas of the triangle, onion patch, Wabakimi Falls, Lonebreast, and Outlet Bay are producing consistent results.

Thunderhook guests are experiencing decent fishing on Shabuskwia Lake after a recent slowdown in the action. Several days of stable weather and warm temperature have picked up the pace for the top two species and Brookies are still being caught at the North end of the lake in the Shab river.

It has been hot here lately. Today will be pushing 90 degrees. I promise to keep in contact with everyone on a more routine basis in the coming months and will continue to post pictures of great fish and good friends/family.

Well folks the 2011 Ontario Fishing Opener has arrived and passed us. We have been blessed with beautiful weather over the past few days. It has been in the Mid -70's already which seems a bit on the warm side for this time of year already. The water temp on the beach at our Shab Island Outpost's is already around 62 degrees. Wow!

We have flown in most of the new boats and all of the new motors already. Flying in the new boats takes some time as they have to be carefully tied to the airplane as to be sure it does not come off in flight.

Reports from our outpost camps are good with many guests catching a good number of fish. With the water warming up so quickly the fish have quickly moved from most usual spring hot spots. The guys at Shab North and Shab Island have had fun catching Brook Trout in the Shabuskwia River during the ice out run. Many guests come just for the Brook Trout... I think they taste better than Salmon!

I have added a picture of Dave and a picture of a Lake Trout he recently caught on Smoothrock Lake. Many of you remember Dave and Becky as they were the island attendants on Shab for several years.

For many a moose hunt is the ultimate get-a-way in the fall. The fishing is phenomenal, the weather cool, and the moose abundant. Could there be a better way to experience the Wabakimi Wilderness?

Till next time...

We are happy to announce to all of our guests at Thunderhook and Smoothrock that we will have much better air service accommodations for the upcoming year.

We have hired West Caribou Air Service Ltd for the summer to take care of our Otter flying. Their equipment is immaculate and we believe it will hugely benefit not only THOOK/SRC but most importantly OUR GUESTS. Donny will also be flying the Beaver this summer as he has done in the past.

With the Otter and Beaver on line this summer groups will be able to travel as one without a wait and we will also be able to get you and your group out of "the bush" earlier for the drive back.

We believe this is essential to providing the best Ontario Fly In Fishing Trip available.

Thank you everyone for patiently waiting as new features are added to our new website. We feel our new website is a big improvement from the last and will enable us to serve everyone much better in the future.

Things are beginning to happen in Armstrong. The ice should be out in 20 days or so (god willing) and the weather is really beginning to warm up. Rudy will soon be getting the base ready and finishing up our addition to the office (hospitality room), and the new dock system which we built last fall.

We are just receiving our new boats and motors from Yamaha and Lund. Last year we purchased 20 new 15hp and 20hp Yamaha four-stroke motors and 10 Lund 16ft boats. We are doing the same again this year. We feel that while others are letting the age of their boats and motors and other equipment slide we will continue to upgrade our facilities and equipment. Last year we really received some nice compliments on the new motors but especially with the new 16ft boats. How many other fly-in outposts have 16ft boats?

It looks like water will be a bit on the high side this spring and we are hoping no damage is done to docks etc...

Looking forward to seeing everyone in the upcoming summer!
