Heya there Happy Campers!

Wanted to share a really cool experience I had recently when at one of our staff meetings. Now I don’t mind saying (mostly because all of 2 people read this blog) that I can’t stand our staff meetings. And they always have a habit of popping up on the busiest of days. But hey, that’s usually how it goes right? Just to see if we’re willing to lay our agendas down for something bigger than ourselves. But This particular week was a surprise! Jason Heriford was introduced to our staff. A local martial arts instructor, Jason has taken and developed a curriculum that helps people discover their passions. It works like this,

Everyone wrote down the answers to the following questions:

Question 1: What Breaks Your Heart?

Question 2: What Gives You Life?

Every little thing I could think of went on that page.

After about 4 minutes, I was looking around thinking, “Geez, nobody is writing anything down anymore, how much longer are we gon- Oh! I just thought of another!”

That’s the advantage of letting people really spend time on these questions. They are important questions! By the end I had quite a list on both ends. Under “What breaks your heart?” I had things like “abuse”, “obesity”, “misuse of arts”, and many, many more. Then under “What Gives You Life?” I had running, climbing, helping people find their passions, coffee-shop discussions, late-night creations, and many, many more. The next thing we did was put a check next to one item in each list that most broke or heart/most gave us life. I found mine, and checked them without much conflict or doubt in my mind.

Then came the hard part. The part no one wanted to do, sharing. I mean, sure it’s okay if someone else shares, but not me, I mean I certainly don’t want t- wait why is my hand raised? Next thing I knew, I was up in front of all my co-workers and peers.

“What did you put under ‘What Breaks Your Heart’?” Jason asked.

“Oh-no” I thought as I shared that what was number one thing for me was the “C”hurch’s misappropriation of art as propaganda, “I’m going to get fired for that” I thought.

“Write that at the top of this board.” Jason instructed me. Next was what gave me most life.

“Question Storming” I replied, “Just being in good dialogue where we stir up more questions than answers, because the questions lead to answers and the heart dwells on them, and the Spirit leads.” (Safe enough).

“Write that at the bottom.” was Jason’s reply. “Now!” Jason addressed the rest of the class, “I’m willing to bet that these two things are pretty closely connected, and this is where all of you (except Justin) get to be involved! All of you are going to help Justin by throwing out suggestions that would help him connect these 2 ideas together!” (I just got to write their ideas down) Now Jason had a set of rules that everyone had to play by, like don’t put any other idea down, etc. But by the end of 10 minutes, I had compiled a huge list from all the recommendations most of which I never would have thought of even if I had a week to ponder them! And many of them are incredibly easy! Any way, all I’m saying is this is the power of collaboration! This whole process is the process of “Question Storming”: helping others (like myself in this case) find some steps to pursuing my passions! So, all 2 of you out there, lets start,

What Breaks YOUR Heart?

And remember, give it about 5 minutes of good pondering.

Had a self-realization moment this week (and I'm not talking about reaching my personal nirvana). I was having a conversation with my wife, explaining the dynamics of a friendship between me and one of my best friends from high school. I, of course, was the logical, level-headed one, the pillar, reserved & considerate (meaning, I said, "I think we're going to get in trouble guys" a lot) . Then there was my best friend, he was more off-the-cuff, fun-loving, adored everyone, and dashing to boot, he said stuff like "let's drive to Galveston, just because!" a lot. But it is one of the best friendships I've ever had, and still have! (meaning we're still friends)
So it got me thinking about what was it about that relationship that was so important to me. If relationships are "all about the give-and-take" (not that I agree with that, I think that's just one element of relationships), but what was it about the "give-and-take" about this relationship that was so important to me? All my life, all I have seen in that friendship was, why he needs me. Obviously, to ground him, keep him from going off the deep end, accountability, etc. But now I'm thinking about, why I needed him in my life. That lead me to evaluating some of my current, meaningful relationships (as well as some of the old ones). Everyone of those have been guys who where "balls to the wall", encouragers, leaders, action-takers & rule-breakers. These are men who told me "Dude, go for it!" when I didn't think I had a chance with this really hot girl (who's now my wife), they told me (and even pushed me) to leader an entire youth-ministry when there was no youth pastor, and they are showing me how to grab the reigns of my ministry, my life, my family, and my skills/career. And they don't ever back down, and they don't give up, …they are in. it. with. me. Now, it's not all been positive, they've also been the ones to convince me that doing the inch-worm on my belly, covered in ranch dressing, on a row of tables, through Texas A&M's cafeteria, for $7 was totally worth it, even if it was just for creating memories! I need men like this in my life. I hope that makes sense to you, I get really befuddled, and run my sentences on, when I'm trying to illustrate how important something is to me. So with that, I leave you with this scene that really hit it home for me, and I hope it helps bring this idea home for you:

Get out of my dreams, and into my car!

Last week I had an awesome time filming my friend James Wilson. Mr. Wilson is a slam poet in Austin, who helps out at Gateway all the time, and is one of the sexiest people on camera …YOU watch it and tell me if I'm wrong! James came in last Wednesday to lay down his lines which deal with giving up and giving in to perfect love, in this work called "Nothing Even Matters"! You'll notice there's no audio at the beginning & end, I explain below the video.

Now in the "live" version we had a band playing an original rendition of "Nothing Even Matters" by Lauryn Hill. James' performance then came up on the imags (screens) as he flowed over the band's bridge (which is why you won't hear any audio at the beginning & end). It was very cool! I'll see if I can snag a copy of the live version this week! NOTHING. EVEN. MATTERS.

I came across this post in Gizmodo today. 12,238 miles in 30 days ain't a bad attempt at matching Donald Miller's boldly-covered book.

It's about Nick Newcomen who decided pen & paper was too insignificant to scrawl his message across the United States, that could only be seen from space. So armed with his GPS logger, he set (or scribbled) out to send a message to the masses. "Read Ayn Rand" …no, no I'm not kidding. Newcomen explains, "The main reason I did it is because I am an Ayn Rand fan," he says. (no duh?) But he goes on, "In my opinion if more people would read her books and take her ideas seriously, the country and world would be a better place – freer, more prosperous and we would have a more optimistic view of the future." This reminds me of my own approaching road trip ahead. 3,243 over 8 days isn't a bad way to start, unfortunately, it doesn't spell anything, except maybe "O". That's about the most you can make of it, although, it does look like a Tyrannosaurus's head!! Starting September 19th, Vince Marotte and myself will be puttering through the purple mountains majesty and golden fields of grain in search of story!

Okay, I just realized that had double meaning, we're seeking out both "s"tory and "S"tory. "S"tory referring to the Story Conference of Chicago, IL. It's an exciting conference as creative minds around the country join together to dialogue and explore what our stories are. That's a pathetic description, but it's the best I can offer at this time, as I won't be fully aware what this conference offers until I get there and witness it for ourselves (and those of you who were at #echo10 know what I mean!). Anyway, it's going to be a crazy, awesome, emotional, dramatic, stupendous event! We can't wait to see you there, and those of you who are on the journey there and back again!

Not really, but I did warn Cindy that there would be many days where she'd come home to the exact same situation(s), as I'd shout "That's The Future!"
