Acronym creator

While teaching I often use acronyms to make it easier for my students to remembers stages in a model. I was trying to come up with an acronym for a series of important things that students have to keep in mind while doing an academic project or assignment.

Google led me to acronym creator which as the name suggests, does exactly that.

So I took the first letter of each of the important points, typed them in (with gaps) and hit the Create Acronyms! button.

The site will come up with a number of acronyms automatically.

GNU PSPP replacement for SPSS statistical analysis programme

I am really annoyed. Opened up my SPSS statistical analysis programme to analyse a set of data and found out that the license has expired. While searching for a way to renew the license, I cam across the GNU PSPP project. This is a free replacement programme for SPSS. I have downloaded it on my old laptop and the interface looks quite similar to SPSS. Will do a full review here after I test it fully.

Free virus scanner from Microsoft

If you run Windows OS and think that your PC miht have a PC, just download Microsoft Safety Scanner which scans and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malware. I have a few antivirus and antispyware running on my computer and it did not have any conflicts working with them.

Note that the Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after it is downloaded and you would need to download it again after that in case you wanted to check your computer again.

I used the full scan option and it took quite sometime to complete the scan. However, it was well worth it as it detected 4 infected files on my PC. This was despite the fact that I had an antivirus and antispyware software running on it.

Free photo printing offers

When my old PC crashed a few years back because of hard disk failure, it took with it thousands of my digital memories - all the photographs which I had taken. The only ones that remain are those which I put up on my blogs and photo sites like Flickr, most of which I had edited. The original high resolution pictures are now lost forever.

Now I make sure that I also make 'hard copy' prints of the digital photographs I take every time. However, despite the fact that the cost of printing out photographs has really fallen over the years, the fact that we take hundred of digital pics at every event or trip can make printing the pics really costly.

Thankfully there are a number of sites which offer discounts on photo printings. I was really delighted when I found out about site that lists top UK digital photo labs where you can get free photo prints. When I last checked the Free Photo Printing site lists 16 companies where you only have to pay for postage and packing. According to the site the cheapest was £0.99 from Snapfish.

Free video streaming

I have been searching for a free video streaming sites out there on the web. I have come across a few and narrowed it down to two:
1. Ustream and
2. Livestream

I haven't tried them personally but today I watched one of my friends use Ustream to stream a wedding ceremony at the University of Warwick Chaplaincy and the quality was amazing with very little lag despite our not-as-fast-as-promised broadband connection.

Will definitely be trying them out later.

Translate Welsh to English

If you know the exact time and date you were born, you can calculate your age to the exact second on the Age calculator site. Of course you can also use it to find the age of other things like a car or even your dog without using a calculator.

Reivew of SUMO Paint; Browser based graphic editor

I am trying out SUMO Paint right now. This web based graphic editor is really easy to use and has loads of useful features including support for layers. I am amazed just looking at the examples of art created by various users. Lot of talent out there.

Note: You need to have Flash installed in order to use SUMO Paint.

Dropbox review

Attended a workshop today and found out about Dropbox from one of the guys. I have been using iDrive to backup my files at home for quite sometime now. I haven't had any problems but there are a few drawbacks of the service. Fist of all, it takes ages to save a few MBs of files. Further more, there were problems when you tried to access the account form another computer.

So when I found out Dropbox and it's features, I was quite excited. Go to the site, install the application on your PC or laptop and then sign up. You get just 2GB for the free version but that's quite good enough for me. However, you have the chance of upgrading the space up to 8 GB by recommending friends.

After installation, you will see a box icon in the task bar below. Clicking on it will bring up the Dropbox folder. Just drag or save stuff there like you would normally do. The files automatically get saved and you can access it form anywhere with an internet connection. You can also share files with other people as well.

Just found out that there is a Dropbox App for the iPhone and you can actually edit your documents on the iPhone using Quickoffice.

Definitely recommended.

VLC media player

The VLC media player is one of the best multimedia players out there on the net. It is capable of playing various audio and video formats including DivX, Matroska (MKV), etc.

It is open-source and thus free. The latest version is 1.0.3 and the Windows self-extracting package is only 17.2MB which took only a couple of minutes to download.

Definitely recommend it.

You can choose a favourite tune and the animated transitions are automatically set to the rhythm of the song or tune. Totally free to sign up. Create a 15 second video clip for free which you can download or embed on your blog. However, you have to pay for longer slideshows.

IrfanView Version 4.25

IrafanView is my favourite image viewer. I also use it to make minor edits on my pictures. It is packed with features and it's amazing that it is still totally free.

The latest version is Version 4.25 and was released last month on the 16th of June, 2009. Several plugins have been changed and updated as well.

Just downloaded Firefox 3.5 and I may be imagining it but it seems to be noticeably faster.

All the add-ons and plugins seem to be working perfectly so far.
