Have You Heard Of The Room Where It Happened?

Acts 1:12-14, “Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk^[a] from the city. ¹³ When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. ¹⁴ They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.”

There is not one thing that you have to carry, because God has decided to carry it for you.

The Holy Spirit is for all believers.

Genesis 1:1-2, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ² Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

You need the Spirit of God

Luke 3:15-16, “The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. ¹⁶ John answered them all, “I baptize you with^[a] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with^[b] the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Exodus 31:1-5, “Then the Lord said to Moses, ² “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, ³ and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— ⁴ to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, ⁵ to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.”

I pour out my spirit on all flesh so that everyone can know my name.

John 1:33-34, “And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ ³⁴ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”^[a]“

You can’t live the way God has called you to live without Him (Holy Spirit).

Ephesians 5:18, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,”

Fill me up, Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:1-4, “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. ² Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. ³ They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. ⁴ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues^[a] as the Spirit enabled them.”

Holy Spirit, come and fill me up.

Acts 2:5-6, “Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. ⁶ When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.”

When the Holy Spirit fills you up he’s going to give you a language.

Acts 2:11-21, “(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” ¹² Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

¹³ Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

¹⁴ Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. ¹⁵ These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! ¹⁶ No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

¹⁷ “‘In the last days, God says,
    I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
    your young men will see visions,
    your old men will dream dreams.
¹⁸ Even on my servants, both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.
¹⁹ I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
²⁰ The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
²¹ And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

Holy Spirit, fill me.

Numbers 11:29, “But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!””

If there’s revelation then there’s transformation.

We walk by faith and not by sight.

Isaiah 26:8, “Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your truth, we wait eagerly for you; for your name and your renown are the desire of our souls.”

Passion exists for the glory of God.

Everything exists for the glory of God.

You exist for the glory of God.

I got saved because Christ died on the cross.

God knows who he is. And he knows he’s the very best thing for your life.

He is pursuing you everyday to say, “I love you.”

You exist for the glory of God.

Even though we are tiny we are vastly loved by God.

He loves you so much that he wants to be everything in you.

Sustainability

We seek Jesus. It’s all about His renown and favor.

God does His deepest work through our yieldedness…

How do we run through the finish line?

We have to walk with Christ moment by moment.

Discipline is not a bad word. Joy is a product of discipline.

There’s always crisis before there is transformation.

You’ve got to place all that you are in His hands, and surrender.

Choices and decision always precedes development.

7 sources that fuel our passion and our love for Jesus:

1. The Word of God
   • Psalm 1:1-2 NIV, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
   • I’ve decided every day to discipline myself. Why? Because I love Jesus.
   • Psalm 1:3 NIV, “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.”
2. Worship
   • Psalm 95:6-7 NIV, “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; ⁷ for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.”
   • It’s spending time in the presence of God.
   • Make it your daily habit to spend time in His presence.
3. Repentance
   • God hates sin.
   • God passionately loves us.
   • 1 John 1:9 and 7 NIV:
     • ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
     • ⁷ But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all^[a] sin.
   • You have sinned. What you need to do is turn and confess that sin.
   • When you turn toward the light the shadow is behind you.
   • Psalm 51
4. Obedience
   • 1 Samuel 15:22
   • What is God telling you to do?
   • Do it.
5. Discipleship
   • Luke 14
   • Jesus is not a hobby. He’s my life.
6. Community
   • 1 Corinthians 12:13, 27
   • We need one another.
   • You need to be connected to a family (church).
   • Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
   • We need peers in our lives. Peers who hold you accountable, who fight for you, who tell you when you do stupid stuff, who runs with you, and someone for you to pour into.
7. Service
   • You need to embrace your identity.
   • Non Christians are our mission field.
   • Matthew 28:18-20
   • Finishing well means that I live well until I finish.

John 21:1-22

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.^[a] It happened this way: ² Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus^[b]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. ³ “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

⁴ Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

⁵ He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

⁶ He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

⁷ Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. ⁸ The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.^[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

¹⁰ Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” ¹¹ So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. ¹² Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. ¹⁴ This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

¹⁵ When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

¹⁶ Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

¹⁷ The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. ¹⁸ Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” ¹⁹ Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

²⁰ Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) ²¹ When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

²² Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

My question is this: “What is God saying to you?”

Often the way God begins to call you back is to complicate things.

God shows up on the shore and calls you home.

We don’t pull back from the Lord, we come toward Him.

He hates your sin because He loves you.

He is gentle with His wayward child when He calls you home.

Don’t let shame steal from you the life God has for you.

God wants to put His hand on your wounds to heal you.

Do you know what He has done?

While I was a sinner Christ died for me.

Faith involves hope.

You cannot have faith without having hope.

Psalm 42:11

Genesis 3

God isn’t a liar.

It’s so easy for us to make idols out of things.

As you wait will you love Him?

The thing with misplaced hope is that you will always miss God.

The friendship got rocky because He wants you to see Him.

When you see Him you’ll see that He is the safest place for your hope to hide.

Promises in scripture that we are commanded to trust.

It is our hope in the promises that help us keep running in the right direction.

Jesus has more hope for our future than we do.

If you are in Christ … then you have hope.

Another reason why we struggle with hope is that we have a memory problem.

Hope moves in two directions.

1 Samuel 17 David was about to fight Goliath. This David is just a shepherd boy. David’s hope makes sense. David had hope in God.

David was a shepherd boy who hoped in God by reflecting on two memories.

When the disappoint comes what will you do? Who, what, will you hope in?

Have you ever been so sad that you can’t eat? Have you ever been so discouraged that you weren’t as joyful as you were when you first met Him?

David says, “Why are you cast down o my soul?”

David preaches to himself instead of listening to himself.

The reason why we can speak to our ourselves … is because Christ has risen from the dead.

If Christ is alive then you have hope.

The resurrection is the reality from which we draw our hope.

Daniel 11

Matthew 13:44

To seek yourself will turn yourself into a monster. But if you lose yourself and pick up your cross you will find true life.

Keep digging.

Five things that were helpful to Levi in navigating this season:

1. Understand the season you’re in and the season you’re heading in to.
   • Your life is a vapor and it’s passing you by.
2. Connect the dots.
   • Only Jesus can heal your wounds.
3. Re-calibrate your scoreboard.
   • Big’s not bad. Faithfulness is what we’re called to.
4. Be kind. You’ve never been here before.
   • Interpret your struggle accurately.
   • Just keep going back to the field. The treasure will come.
5. Anchor your identity in what can’t be taken away.
   • What makes you you in your mind?
   • Deny yourself daily.
   • Daniel 11:4
   • Daniel 2:35, 44
   • John 11:35, “Jesus wept”.
   • Jesus offers true freedom.
   • If you keep digging you’ll keep finding treasure.
   • The true treasure is Him.

Isaiah 43:16-18

Exodus 14:21

We serve a God that is with us through. And he takes us through with his presence and his power.

A lot of us give up on God because we want God to deliver us from.

We have a God who takes us through.

The most precious promise in the Bible is that God will never leave us nor forsake us.

You don’t have to go through it alone. God is your very present help in time of need.

Through is a journey. Through takes time.

Exodus 12:14

Remember.

Do you not see it? Do you see what God is doing?

Remember to be a new wine skin.

The value of the wineskin is contingent on the wine that it is carrying.

Are you willing to let the wine permeant?

Behold I (God) do a new thing. Do you not see it? I’m making rivers in the wilderness.

The same spirit that raised Christ Jesus from the dead lives inside us.

Are you willing to allow God to make you a new vessel?

Are we willing to be crushed to allow that new wine to pour through us into the generation around us?

Our presuppositions:

1. I have rights
2. I should get to decide
3. I know me best
4. I deserve more
5. I deserve to be happy

But the Gospel speaks to our presuppositions. Without Christ we have a problem. Without Christ we are separated from a holy God. And to get to that God is impossible without Christ. And that changes all the presuppositions.

Sin doesn’t make you a bad person it makes you a spiritually dead person.

Ephesians 2:1-7

Our choice, our sin, made us objects of God’s wrath because of his holiness.

His response to our sin was kindness and because of his great love. Even when we were dead he made us alive.

But God, when we were dead, made us alive, through Jesus who bridged the gap.

When you get the Gospel all of your presuppositions change.

I deserved wrath but I got grace.

But God, has made us alive, together with Christ.

John 19:28-37

Scripture tells us that Jesus died on the cross. Paul tells us why.

Your name and Your renown are the desire of our souls.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15

The secret to the power is Christ.

Galatians 2:20-21 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. ²¹ I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

The gospel is that Christ lives in me.

Consider the magnitude of the cross.

I want us to see tonight that the cross dwarfs powerless religion and its empty claims.

Paul was a systems guy until he met Jesus.

That you would realize that nothing you can do would get you to holy holy holy. Jesus did enough to bring you from death to life. It’s not a system it’s a Savior.

You can be saved tonight.

The second thing the cross dwarfs is the choking grip of guilt and shame.

• God wants you to get some perspective. Yes failure is real. Put it into perspective of what God has done for you.
• You have been forgiven and set free.

The third thing the cross dwarfs is your anxiety about your future plans.

• Your heavenly father doesn’t want you feeling any pressure right now about your life. And if you’re feeling pressure it’s not because of your heavenly father. Your heavenly father wants you to grasp the magnitude of the cross.
• What God’s offering you is his hand.
• God has a plan for you right now.
• Even the worst can be used by God.
• Your anxiety to figure it out should just be dwarfed by the sovereignty of God.

The fourth thing the cross dwarfs is me and my.

• If you were to sum up your life in four words: Not I, but Christ.
• I no longer live but Christ lives in me.
• He and His, these are the presuppositions of my life. Not I, He. Not my, His.

The fifth thing the cross dwarfs is your love affair with earth.

• Galatians 6:14-18
• What counts is whether you went from death to life in Christ.
• I’m going to boast but nothing but our master Jesus Christ.
• I just want Jesus. I just want to proclaim his story.
