Abasia (from Greek: a-, without and basis, step) is the inability to walk due to impaired muscle coordination. The term covers a spectrum of medical disorders such as:

choreic abasia: caused by chorea of the legs
paralytic abasia: caused by paralysis of the leg muscles
spastic abasia: caused by spastic stiffening of the leg muscles
trembling abasia: caused by trembling of the legs

ABCD syndrome

ABCD syndrome is the acronym for albinism, black lock, cell migration disorder of the neurocytes of the gut and sensorineural deafness. It has been found to be caused by mutation in the endothelin B receptor gene (EDNRB).

Classification

ABCD syndrome is defined as A- albinism, B- black lock, C- cell migration disorder of the neurocytes of the gut, and D- deafness. It was initially misdiagnosed and later discovered that a homozygous mutation in the EDNRB gene causes ABCD syndrome. This helped scientists discover that it is the same as type IV Waardenburg syndrome, also known as Shah-Waardenburg Syndrome.

Characteristics

In the beginning, medical officials defined ABCD syndrome by the four key characteristics of the syndrome. In the first case study of the Kurdish girl, researches described her as having “albinism and a black lock at the right temporo-occiptital region along Blaschko lines, her eyelashes and brows were white, the irises in her eyes appeared to be blue, she had spots of retinal depigmentation, and she did not react to noise” ^[1] The A in this syndrome is for albinism which is interesting in this diagnosis because the skin of an affected individual is albino pale besides the brown patches of mispigmented skin. The B of ABCD is described and seen in clinical pictures of the infants as “black locks” that are thick patches of black hair located above the ears and form a half circle reaching to the other ear to make a crest shape. As identified in this first case study and stated in a dictionary of dermatologic syndromes, ABCD syndrome has many notable features, including “snow white hair in patches, distinct black locks of hair, skin white except brown macules, deafness, irides gray to blue, nystagmus, photophobia, poor visual activity, normal melanocytes in pigmented hair and skin, and absent melanocytes in areas of leukoderma” ^[2]. Individuals have the blue/gray irises typical of people affected by blindness. The C of ABCD syndrome is what distinguishes this genetic disorder from BADS and it involves cell migration disorder of the neurocytes of the gut. The additional characteristic in ABCD occurs when nerve cells do not function correctly in the gut, which results in aganglionosis - the intestines’ failure to move food along the digestive tract. D of ABCD is deafness or being unresponsive to noise due to very low quality of hearing, which was reported in every case of ABCD syndrome. The characteristics of ABCD syndrome are clearly evident in an inflicted individual.

No longer considered a separate syndrome, ABCD syndrome is today considered to be a variation of Shah-Waardenburg type IV. P.J. Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is described as “the combination of sensorinerual hearing loss, hypopigmentation of skin and hair, and pigmentary disturbances of the irides” ^[3]. Hearing loss and deafness, skin mispigmentation and albinism, and pigmentary changes in irises are the similarities between WS and ABCD. According to the dictionary of dermatologic syndromes, Waardenburg syndrome has many notable features, including “depigmentaion of hair and skin - white forelock and prematuring graying of hair, confluent thick eyebrows, heterochromic irides or hypopigmentation of iris, laterally displacy inner canthi, congenital sensorinerual deafness, broad nasal root, autosomal dominant disorder, and other associated findings, including black forelocks” ^[2].

Causes

Researchers in the past 20 years have determined that a gene mutation, specifically a homozygous mutation in the EDNRB gene, is the cause of ABCD syndrome. The advancement of technology led to new DNA material testing methods and this discovery changed the view of ABCD syndrome completely. A homozygous mutation means that there was an identical mutation on both the maternal and paternal genes. The identifying clinical report stated the test was done by scanning the Kurdish family for mutations in the EDNRB gene and the EDN3 gene by using a test called denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. The electrophoresis test takes advantage of electrical currents and differences in melting points of fragments of DNA or RNA to move them based on their molecular weight; the differences in mobility of the fragments then can be analyzed to determine different sequences and to detect individual alleles. Different nucleotides in DNA are codes for certain proteins, which are formed by different patterns of the base pairs adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine. The combination of adenine and thymine and guanine and cytosine align on the double strands of DNA. The test results found “an aberrant DGGE pattern of exon 3 of the EDNRB gene. The mutation was determined to be a homozygous C to T base pair transition at the amino acid level, causing a premature stop in gene translation” ^[3]. This specialized testing enables geneticists to recognize the gene mutation that is the cause of ABCD syndrome.

New findings introduced an important break in the beliefs about ABCD syndrome because the endotherlin B gene is a gene involved in Shah-Waardenburg syndrome. The endothelin receptor B produces Waardenburg syndrome type IV ^[4]. Researchers began discussing the possibility that ABCD syndrome was in fact not a syndrome - rather it was a type of another syndrome known as Waardenburg. Discovering that the same gene is involved in both ABCD syndrome and Waardenburg syndrome is important because researchers can now look further into ways to fix this crucial gene that causes so many abnormalities on the inside and the outside of individuals.

Screening

Screening generally only takes place among those displaying several of the symptoms of ABCD, but a study on a large group of institutionalized deaf people in Columbia revealed that 5.38% of them were Waardenburg patients. Because of its rarity, none of the patients were diagnosed with ABCD (Waardenburg Type IV). Nothing can be done to prevent the disease.

Diagnosis

The occurrence of WS has been reported to be one in 45,000 in Europe. The diagnosis can be made prenatally by ultrasound due to the phenotype displaying pigmentary disturbances, facial abnormalities, and other developmental defects ^[5]. After birth, the diagnosis is initially made symptomatically, and can be confirmed through genetic testing. If the diagnosis is not made early enough, complications can arise from the Hirschsprungs.

Treatment

Treatment for the disease itself is nonexistent, but options for most of the individual symptoms do exist. For example, one suffering from hearing loss would be given hearing aids, and those with Hirschsprung’s disorder can be treated with a colostomy.

Prognosis

If the Hirschsprung’s disease is treated in time, ABCD sufferers live otherwise healthy lives. If it is not found soon enough, death often occurs in infancy. For those suffering hearing loss, it is generally regressive and the damage to hearing increases over time. Digestive problems from the colostomy and reattachment may exist, but in most cases can be treated with laxatives. The only other debilitating symptom is hearing loss, which is usually degenerative and can only be treated with surgery or hearing aids.

History

Dutch ophthalmologist, Petrus Johannes Waardenburg (1886–1979), brought about the idea of Waardenburg syndrome when he examined two patients—deaf twins.^[6] Waardenburg decided to define the syndrome with the six major symptoms that patients most commonly had. Firstly, he defined, “lateral displacement of the medial canthi combined with dystopia of the lacrimal punctum and blepharophimosis” referring to those people with broader and more flat nasal bridge, which in turn leads to folds in the skin that cover the inner corners of the eye.^[6] Secondly, people who are born with a “prominent broad nasal root,” have a widened area between the eyes, causing them to have a more flat and wider face, along with eyes further apart than normal.^[6] Thirdly, “hypertrichosis of the medial part of the eyebrows” is present, meaning excessive hair growth in the patients’ eyebrow region, most likely leading to a unibrow.^[6] The fourth symptom, “white forelock,” was commonly seen as depigmented strands of hair, fifth “heterochromia iridis,” indicates that the patient had two different colored eyes, or two different colors in the same eyes, and finally, “deaf-mutism” classifying that people with the disorder are both deaf and mute.^[6]

When scientists further investigated the syndrome, they realized that patients exhibited a wider range of symptoms of this disease in different combinations. This helped them distinguish different forms of Waardenburg syndrome. Their evaluation consisted of specifying Waardenburg syndrome type I (WS1), type II (WS2), type III (WS3), and type IV (WS4).

In 1995, a case study was performed of a Kurdish family. Scientists completed a molecular analysis with DNA strands of the patients diagnosed with ABCD syndrome. Their task was to scan the sequences to find a mutation in the EDNRB gene, one of the most important protein-coding genes. When they completed the scan they “found a homozygous C to T transition resulting, at the amino acid level, in a premature stop codon” ^[3]. Then, they went back and defined that Shah-Waardenburg syndrome consisted majorly of “mutations in the ENDRB or END3 gene,” along “with [some] SOX10 mutations” ^[3]. Therefore, the researchers confirmed that ABCD syndrome was a form of Shah-Waardenburg syndrome. The genetic tests that they performed on the patients DNA helped in identifying the appropriate diagnosis.

Later, Whitkop, another scientists, in 2002, examined patients born with white hair, some black locks, and depigmented skin, hence, he diagnosed them as having black lock albinism deafness syndrome also known as BADS ^[1]. Those who were closely working with this case suggested that it was an autoimmune disorder rather than a genetic defect. However, soon after, they had a patient come in who was one of fourteen children of Kurdish parents. The pedigree they examined revealed autosomal-recessive inheritance which led to cell migration of the neurocytes in the gut, and therefore, they redefined the syndrome as ABCD Syndrome” ^[1]. This revealed “a homozygous nonsense mutation in the EDNRB gene” meaning that ABCD Syndrome was not a separate entity, but rather the same as Shah-Waardenburg syndrome ^[3].

Aase syndrome

Aase syndrome or Aase-Smith syndrome is a rare inherited disorder characterized by anemia with some joint and skeletal deformities. Aase syndrome is thought to be an autosomal recessive inherited disorder.^[1] The genetic basis of the disease is not known. The anemia is caused by underdevelopment of the bone marrow, which is where blood cells are formed.

It is named after the American paediatricians Jon Morton Aase and David Weyhe Smith, who characterized it in 1968.^[2]

Symptoms

Mildly slowed growth
Pale skin
Delayed closure of fontanelles (soft spots)
Narrow shoulders
Triple jointed thumbs, absent or small knuckles, decreased skin creases at finger joints
Inability to fully extend the joints from birth (congenital contractures)
Cleft palate
Deformed ears
Droopy eyelids

Signs and tests

A CBC (complete blood count) will show anemia and a decrease in the white blood cell count.
An echocardiogram may reveal heart defects (ventricular septal defect is most common).
X-rays will show skeletal abnormalities as described above.
A bone marrow biopsy may be performed.

Treatment

Frequent blood transfusions are given in the first year of life to treat anemia. Prednisone may be given, although this should be avoided in infancy because of side effects on growth and brain development. A bone marrow transplant may be necessary if other treatment fails.

Prognosis

Anemia usually resolves over the years.

Complications

Complications related to anemia include weakness, fatigue, and decreased oxygenation of the blood.
Decreased white blood cells alter the body's ability to fight infection.
If a heart defect exists, it may cause multiple complications (depending on the specific defect).
Severe cases have been associated with still birth or early death.

Prevention

As with most genetic diseases there is no way to prevent the entire disease. With prompt recognition and treatment of infections in childhood, the complications of low white blood cell counts may be limited.

Aarskog–Scott syndrome is an inherited disease characterized by short stature, facial abnormalities, skeletal and genital anomalies.

The Aarskog–Scott syndrome (AAS) is also known as the Aarskog syndrome, faciodigitogenital syndrome, shawl scrotum syndrome and faciogenital dysplasia.

Signs and symptoms

The Aarskog–Scott syndrome is a disorder with short stature, hypertelorism, downslanting palpebral fissures, anteverted nostrils, joint laxity, shawl scrotum, and mental retardation. The physical phenotype varies with age and postpuberal males may have only minor remnant manifestations of the prepuberal phenotype.

Genetics

X-linked recessive inheritance.

Aarskog–Scott syndrome is transmitted in an X-linked recessive manner. The sons of female carriers are at 50% risk of being affected with the syndrome. The daughters of female carriers are at 50% risk of being carriers themselves. Females may have mild manifestations of the syndrome. The syndrome is caused by mutation in a gene called FGDY1 in band p11.21 on the X chromosome.

Pathophysiology

The Aarskog–Scott syndrome is due to mutation in the FGD1 gene. FGD1 encodes a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that specifically activates Cdc42, a member of the Rho (Ras homology) family of the p21 GTPases. By activating Cdc42, FGD1 protein stimulates fibroblasts to form filopodia, cytoskeletal elements involved in cellular signaling, adhesion, and migration. Through Cdc42, FGD1 protein also activates the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling cascade, a pathway that regulates cell growth, apoptosis, and cellular differentiation.

Within the developing mouse skeleton, FGD1 protein is expressed in precartilaginous mesenchymal condensations, the perichondrium and periosteum, proliferating chondrocytes, and osteoblasts. These results suggest that FGD1 signaling may play a role in the biology of several different skeletal cell types including mesenchymal prechondrocytes, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts. The characterization of the spatiotemporal pattern of FGD1 expression in mouse embryos has provided important clues to the understanding of the pathogenesis of Aarskog–Scott syndrome.

It appears likely that the primary defect in Aarskog–Scott syndrome is an abnormality of FGD1/Cdc42 signaling resulting in anomalous embryonic development and abnormal endochondral and intramembranous bone formation.

Diagnosis

Genetic testing may be available for mutations in the FGDY1 gene. Genetic counseling is indicated for individuals or families who may carry this condition, as there are overlapping features with Fetal alcohol syndrome.^[1]

Treatment

Surgery may be required to correct some of the anomalies, and orthodontic treatment may be used to correct some of the facial abnormalities. Trials of growth hormone have not been effective to treat short stature in this disorder.

Prognosis

Mild degrees of mental slowness may be present, but affected children usually have good social skills. Some males may exhibit reduced fertility.

Some recent findings have included cystic changes in the brain and generalized seizures^{[citation needed]} . There may be difficulty growing in the first year of life in up to one-third of cases. Misaligned teeth may require orthodontic correction. An undescended testicle will require surgery.

Adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency (MIM 103050, ADSL) is a rare autosomal recessive disease causing severe mental retardation and/or autistic features.1,2 Seizures are often observed (80%),3 varying in age of onset (from newborn to late childhood) and nature (tonic-clonic, “suppression burst” pattern, West syndrome, etc.), and are very often resistant to all medication. Around 50% of the children show autistic-like behaviour.4 Microcephaly is rare (1/13 of reported cases). Non-specific anomalies of the brain, such as hypoplasia of the vermis, cerebral atrophy,5 lack of myelination,6 white matter anomalies,7 and lissencephaly4 have often been described.

Other Complications: • Low self-esteem • Social difficulties related to physical problems • Male infertility in those with both testes undescended • Problems with the structure of the heart • Accumulation of fluid in tissues of body (lymphedema, cystic hygroma) • Failure to thrive in infants.

History

The syndrome is named for Dagfinn Aarskog, a Norwegian pediatrician and human geneticist who first described it in 1970,^[2] and for Charles I. Scott, Jr., an American medical geneticist who independently described the syndrome in 1971.^[3]

A syndrome characterised by congenital hypoplasia of lymph vessels, which causes lymphedema of the legs and recurrent cholestasis in infancy, and slow progress to hepatic cirrhosis and giant cell hepatitis with fibrosis of the portal tracts.^[1]^[2]

The genetic cause is unknown, but it is autosomal recessively inherited and the gene is located to chromosome 15q^1,2. A common feature of the condition is a generalised lymphatic anomaly, which may be indicative of the defect being lymphangiogenetic in origin¹. The condition is particularly frequent in southern Norway, where more than half the cases are reported from, but is found in patients in other parts of Europe and the U.S..^[3] It is named after Oystein Aagenaes, a Norwegian paediatrician.

Best 9 Amazing “Above-Water” Shipwrecks

The world’s oceans abound with shipwrecks and a multitude of other nautical artifacts. Lurking deep beneath the waves of the planet’s most inhospitable waters are some of history’s most grand and feared ships, presenting divers with a fascinating incarnation of a bygone age. But what about those among us who don’t scuba dive? Here are 9 corroding old vessels that can be seen clearly from the relative safety of terra firma.

1.SS Maheno, Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia

Fraser Island off the coast of Queensland in Australia is the largest sand island in the world and a breathtaking place to visit. But its most notable man-made landmark is easily the wreck of the SS Maheno. The Maheno had a varied history: built in Scotland in 1905 as a luxury passenger liner for the trans-Tasman crossings, it served as a hospital ship in the English Channel during before being declared outdated in 1935. That same year, the ship was being towed to Melbourne when a cyclone struck, setting it adrift for several days before it finally became beached on Fraser Island. It has since been used for target practise by the Royal Australian Air Force and is now a popular tourist attraction. More than three storeys of the vessel are reportedly buried beneath the sand.

2.SS American Star, Canary Islands

The incredible image above shows the wreck of the SS American Star, built in 1940 for United States Lines and wrecked in January 1994 off Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. At the time of the accident, the vessel was being towed to Thailand to be used as a floating hotel… More to come on this one later!

3.Chatham Islands, New Zealand

This rusty old vessel (above) was captured on the archipelago of the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, in September 2007. The islands are named after the ship HMS Chatham of the Vancouver Expedition, captained by William Robert Broughton, who claimed possession of the archipelago for Great Britain in 1791. But it’s fair to say that this old boat doesn’t quite date back to that period in history. Today, the islands have a grand population of 609 people of European and Maori descent, with surroundings that conjure an atmosphere of exploration and adventure harking back to the early settlers.

4.Republic of Vanuatu, South Pacific

This ill fated ship ran aground here in the early 1980s when Cyclone Uma lashed the islands of Vanuatu. The volcanic archipelago in the Melanesia region has doubtless seen countless shipwrecks in its time. This one has rested on the reef since the day it foundered, and has since become a popular tourist attraction.

5.The Peter Iredale, Clatsop Spit, Oregon, United States

Jutting out of the sand along the northwest coast of Oregon can be found the remains of the Peter Iredale, which ran aground here in 1906. Built in June 1890 in Maryport, northern England, by R. Ritson & Co., the vessel was attempting to enter the Columbia River when high winds literally drove her into the shore. Thankfully all 27 souls on board, including two stowaways, were saved. The weather scuppered any plans to tow the ship off the beach and it soon became embedded in the sand, where it remains to this day. Rumour has it that the ship’s skipper, Captain Harry Lawrence, waded ashore from the wreck armed with the log book and a bottle of whisky. He passed the whisky around his crew and offered up a final salute to his ship, saying:

It might not be the most impressive looking wreck of all time, but the photographer has done a nice job of capturing the eponymous Point Reyes fishing boat.

7.The Kakapo, Cape Town

The two remaining propeller blades framing a rusty old boiler is all that remains of the Kakapo, which ran aground on May 26, 1900. On that fateful night, the Kakapo left Cape Town bound for Sydney, reportedly shrouded in “mist and fog”. The captain turned sharp east when he saw what he thought was Cape Point, which would have allowed him to cruise into False Bay. But unbeknown to him, what he had actually seen was Chapman’s Peak, and instead of turning into False Bay he rammed the ship on Noordhoek Beach, where it has been slowly rotting away for the last century. The Cape of Good Hope is known for its treacherous conditions, and was originally called The Cape of Storms. Since 1918, the Slangkop Lighthouse has ensured subsequent captains have not made the same mistake.

8.Lake Ontario, Canada

Can anyone fill in the blanks in on this one? Name of vessel? How it came to be washed-up here? What is known is that this amazingly intact shipwreck can be found on the shores of Lake Ontario. And if you think this is cool, the lake has a plethora of wrecks – some of them commanding important places in history.

9.River Princess, Candolim Beach, Goa

Perhaps more of an eyesore than historic wreck, the vast River Princess lies abandoned on Candolim Beach in Goa after it was washed-up in a storm. The local government, apparently, cannot afford to get rid of the ship, and by all accounts the water is so shallow that people can almost wade out to it – not recommended! One side of the hull has had a gaping hole cut out so that the sand and water that has gushed in will ensure the ship doesn’t move, preventing it drifting into the busy shipping lanes. Eyesore or not, this is one leviathan that could be with us for generations to come…

Belize’s Great Blue Hole

Off the coast of Belize, lies one of the most famous diving spots in the world – the Great Blue Hole, the world’s largest known underwater sinkhole. Surrounded by the Lighthouse Reef atoll, the Great Blue Hole is famous for its rich, blue water, stretches over 300m (984ft) across with a depth of 125m (410ft).

The Great Blue Hole was made famous by Jacques Cousteau in 1971, when the ocean explorer declared it one of the best diving spots in the world. Today, the underwater sinkhole continues to attract divers around the world who flock to see the amazing geological formations of stalactites and stalagmites in the vertical cave. Divers also encounter many species of fish in the crystal clear water including giant groupers, nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks and Blacktip sharks.

The Great Blue Hole is a World Heritage Site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Underwater Jesus Statues

Worship knows no boundaries – and nowhere is this more evident than with the various underwater Jesus statues – Christ of the Abyss – located around the world.

The underwater Jesus statues, located in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Florida, USA, the Tyrrhenian Sea near Giglio Island in Italy, and off the coast of St. George in the Caribbean, are popular diving attractions, but also draw people from around the world for underwater worship, marriage ceremonies, burials and annual religious processions.

All three statues depict Christ with his arms raised in blessing.

Internationally renowned sculpture and installation artist Jason deCaires Taylor recently sent us some updated images from his Moiliniere Bay underwater museum in Grenada.“After three years beneath the Grenadian waters the latest growth of sponges, tunicates, hydroids, soft and hard corals has been beyond all expectations,” explains deCaires Taylor.Moilinere Bay is now home to sixty-five sculptures, covering an area of 800sq.m (8600sq.ft). Statue of Christ the King high as 33 meters, has been established in the city Swiebodzin, Poland. With that height, the statue has become the world’s tallest statue of Jesus.

“I was never as happy as today. It is the culmination of my work as pendega,” said Sylwester Zawadzki, 78-year-old priest who created this statue, told local media.

Local City officials say high statue of Jesus was actually reached 51 m, if the foundation and crown of golden statues counted. Thus, they claim the statue in Swiebodzin higher than the statue of Jesus who was in Bolivia and Brazil.

Overall height statue of Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, is 40.4 m is the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as high as 38 m.
The cost of building a statue in Swiebodzin comes from private donations worldwide and pastor Zawadzki not willing to mention the cost.

The city government hopes the statue can promote their city and attract tourists from around the world. However some residents are not too enthusiastic to welcome the establishment of the statue was to argue the money would be better used for social projects.

The Cleveland Harbour West Pierhead lighthouse is unrecognisable after heavy winds lifted massive waves over the lighthouse on Lake Erie in the state of Ohio. Some of the water froze on impact, eventually encasing the structure in a frosty shell. Matt Grabski from Clevelands's Great Lakes Science Centre told AOL news that what happened was unique.

"A really big storm came through and threw a lot of wind. The waves on the lake kept battering the lighthouse and splashing it. The water turned into ice and it kept building up and accumulating," he said. The lighthouse’s flashing red-and-white light signal has been difficult to see through the thick layers of ice.

Kesultanan Aceh Darussalam berdiri menjelang keruntuhan dari Samudera Pasai yang pada tahun 1360 ditaklukkan oleh Majapahit hingga kemundurannya di abad ke-14. Kesultanan Aceh terletak di utara pulau Sumatera dengan ibu kota Kutaraja (Banda Aceh) dengan sultan pertamanya adalah Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah yang dinobatkan pada pada Ahad, 1 Jumadil awal 913 H atau pada tanggal 8 September 1507. Dalam sejarahnya yang panjang itu (1496 - 1903), Aceh telah mengukir masa lampaunya dengan begitu megah dan menakjubkan, terutama karena kemampuannya dalam mengembangkan pola dan sistem pendidikan militer, komitmennya dalam menentang imperialisme bangsa Eropa, sistem pemerintahan yang teratur dan sistematik, mewujudkan pusat-pusat pengkajian ilmu pengetahuan, hingga kemampuannya dalam menjalin hubungan diplomatik dengan negara lain.

Sejarah

Awal mula

Kesultanan Aceh didirikan oleh Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah pada tahun 1496. Di awal-awal masa pemerintahannya wilayah Kesultanan Aceh berkembang hingga mencakup Daya, Pedir, Pasai, Deli dan Aru. Pada tahun 1528, Ali Mughayat Syah digantikan oleh putera sulungnya yang bernama Salahuddin, yang kemudian berkuasa hingga tahun 1537. Kemudian Salahuddin digantikan oleh Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah al-Kahar yang berkuasa hingga tahun 1568.

Masa kejayaan

Kesultanan Aceh mengalami masa keemasan pada masa kepemimpinan Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607 - 1636). Pada masa kepemimpinannya, Aceh telah berhasil memukul mundur kekuatan Portugis dari selat Malaka. Kejadian ini dilukiskan dalam La Grand Encyclopedie bahwa pada tahun 1582, bangsa Aceh sudah meluaskan pengaruhnya atas pulau-pulau Sunda (Sumatera, Jawa dan Kalimantan) serta atas sebagian tanah Semenanjung Melayu. Selain itu Aceh juga melakukan hubungan diplomatik dengan semua bangsa yang melayari Lautan Hindia. Pada tahun 1586, kesultanan Aceh melakukan penyerangan terhadap Portugis di Melaka dengan armada yang terdiri dari 500 buah kapal perang dan 60.000 tentara laut. Serangan ini dalam upaya memperluas dominasi Aceh atas Selat Malaka dan semenanjung Melayu. Walaupun Aceh telah berhasil mengepung Melaka dari segala penjuru, namun penyerangan ini gagal dikarenakan adanya persekongkolan antara Portugis dengan kesultanan Pahang.

Dalam lapangan pembinaan kesusasteraan dan ilmu agama, Aceh telah melahirkan beberapa ulama ternama, yang karangan mereka menjadi rujukan utama dalam bidang masing-masing, seperti Hamzah Fansuri dalam bukunya Tabyan Fi Ma'rifati al-U Adyan, Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani dalam bukunya Mi'raj al-Muhakikin al-Iman, Nuruddin Al-Raniri dalam bukunya Sirat al-Mustaqim, dan Syekh Abdul Rauf Singkili dalam bukunya Mi'raj al-Tulabb Fi Fashil.

Kemunduran

Kemunduran Kesultanan Aceh bermula sejak kemangkatan Sultan Iskandar Tsani pada tahun 1641. Kemunduran Aceh disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, di antaranya ialah makin menguatnya kekuasaan Belanda di pulau Sumatera dan Selat Malaka, ditandai dengan jatuhnya wilayah Minangkabau, Siak, Tapanuli dan Mandailing, Deli serta Bengkulu kedalam pangkuan penjajahan Belanda. Faktor penting lainnya ialah adanya perebutan kekuasaan di antara pewaris tahta kesultanan.

Traktat London yang ditandatangani pada 1824 telah memberi kekuasaan kepada Belanda untuk menguasai segala kawasan British/Inggris di Sumatra sementara Belanda akan menyerahkan segala kekuasaan perdagangan mereka di India dan juga berjanji tidak akan menandingi British/Inggris untuk menguasai Singapura.

Pada akhir November 1871, lahirlah apa yang disebut dengan Traktat Sumatera, dimana disebutkan dengan jelas "Inggris wajib berlepas diri dari segala unjuk perasaan terhadap perluasan kekuasaan Belanda di bagian manapun di Sumatera. Pembatasan-pembatasan Traktat London 1824 mengenai Aceh dibatalkan." Sejak itu, usaha-usaha untuk menyerbu Aceh makin santer disuarakan, baik dari negeri Belanda maupun Batavia. Setelah melakukan peperangan selama 40 tahun, Kesultanan Aceh akhirnya jatuh dan digabungkan sebagai bagian dari negara Hindia Timur Belanda. Pada tahun 1942, pemerintahan Hindia Timur Belanda jatuh di bawah kekuasan Jepang. Pada tahun 1945, Jepang dikalahkan Sekutu, sehingga tokoh-tokoh pergerakan kemerdekaan di ibukota Hindia Timur Belanda (Indonesia) segera memproklamasikan kemerdekaan Indonesia pada tahun 1945, Aceh menyatakan bersedia bergabung ke dalam Republik indonesia atas ajakan dan bujukan dari Soekarno kepada pemimpin Aceh Tengku Muhammad Daud Beureueh saat itu

Perang Aceh

Perang Aceh dimulai sejak Belanda menyatakan perang terhadap Aceh pada 26 Maret 1873 setelah melakukan beberapa ancaman diplomatik, namun tidak berhasil merebut wilayah yang besar. Perang kembali berkobar pada tahun 1883, namun lagi-lagi gagal, dan pada 1892 dan 1893, pihak Belanda menganggap bahwa mereka telah gagal merebut Aceh.

Dr. Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, seorang ahli Islam dari Universitas Leiden yang telah berhasil mendapatkan kepercayaan dari banyak pemimpin Aceh, kemudian memberikan saran kepada Belanda agar serangan mereka diarahkan kepada para ulama, bukan kepada sultan. Saran ini ternyata berhasil. Pada tahun 1898, Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz dinyatakan sebagai gubernur Aceh, dan bersama letnannya, Hendrikus Colijn, merebut sebagian besar Aceh.

Sultan Muhammad Daud akhirnya menyerahkan diri kepada Belanda pada tahun 1903 setelah dua istrinya, anak serta ibundanya terlebih dahulu ditangkap oleh Belanda. Kesultanan Aceh akhirnya jatuh seluruhnya pada tahun 1904. Saat itu, hampir seluruh Aceh telah direbut Belanda.

Badan Penyelidik Usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia atau (Jepang: Dokuritsu Junbi Cosakai atau dilafalkan Dokuritsu Zyunbi Tyoosakai) adalah sebuah badan yang dibentuk oleh pemerintah pendudukan balatentara Jepang pada tanggal 29 April 1945 bertepatan dengan hari ulang tahun Kaisar Hirohito. Badan ini dibentuk sebagai upaya mendapatkan dukungan bangsa Indonesia dengan menjanjikan bahwa Jepang akan membantu proses kemerdekaan Indonesia. BPUPKI beranggotakan 63 orang yang diketuai oleh Radjiman Wedyodiningrat dengan wakil ketua Hibangase Yosio (orang Jepang) dan R.P. Soeroso.

Di luar anggota BPUPKI, dibentuk sebuah Badan Tata Usaha (semacam sekretariat) yang beranggotakan 60 orang. Badan Tata Usaha ini dipimpin oleh R.P.Soeroso, dengan wakil Abdoel Gafar Pringgodigdo dan Masuda (orang Jepang).

Pada tanggal 7 Agustus 1945, Jepang membubarkan BPUPKI dan membentuk Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia atau (Jepang: Dokuritsu Junbi Inkai) dengan anggota berjumlah 21 orang sebagai upaya pencerminan perwakilan etnis,^[1] terdiri berasal dari 12 orang dari Jawa, 3 orang dari Sumatra, 2 orang dari Sulawesi, 1 orang dari Kalimantan, 1 orang dari Nusa Tenggara, 1 orang dari maluku, 1 orang dari Tionghoa.

Rapat Pertama

Rapat pertama diadakan di gedung Chuo Sangi In di Jalan Pejambon 6 Jakarta yang kini dikenal dengan sebutan Gedung Pancasila. Pada zaman Belanda, gedung tersebut merupakan gedung Volksraad, lembaga DPR pada jaman kolonial Belanda.

Rapat dibuka pada tanggal 28 Mei 1945 dan pembahasan dimulai keesokan harinya 29 Mei 1945 dengan tema dasar negara. Pada rapat pertama ini terdapat 3 orang yang mengajukan pendapatnya tentang dasar negara.

Pada tanggal 29 Mei 1945, Mr. Muhammad Yamin dalam pidato singkatnya mengemukakan lima asas yaitu:

kesejahteraan rakyat
peri kemanusiaan
peri kerakyatan

Pada tanggal 31 Mei 1945, Prof. Dr. Mr. Soepomo mengusulkan lima asas yaitu

persatuan

kekeluargaan
musyawarah

Pada tanggal 1 Juni 1945, Soekarno mengusulkan lima asas pula yang disebut Pancasila yaitu:^[2]

a. kebangsaan Indonesia
b. internasionalisme dan peri kemanusiaan
c. mufakat atau demokrasi
d. kesejahteraan sosial
e. Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa

Kelima asas dari Soekarno disebut Pancasila yang menurut beliau bilamana diperlukan dapat diperas menjadi Trisila atau Tiga Sila yaitu:
a. Sosionasionalisme
b. Sosiodemokrasi
c. Ketuhanan yang berkebudayaan

Bahkan masih menurut Soekarno, Trisila tersebut di atas bila diperas kembali disebutnya sebagai Ekasila yaitu merupakan sila gotong royong merupakan upaya Soekarno dalam menjelaskan bahwa konsep tersebut adalah dalam satu-kesatuan. Selanjutnya lima asas tersebut kini dikenal dengan istilah Pancasila, namun konsep bersikaf kesatuan tersebut pada akhirnya disetujui dengan urutan serta redaksi yang sedikit berbeda.

Sementara itu, perdebatan terus berlanjut di antara peserta sidang BPUPKI mengenai penerapan aturan Islam dalam Indonesia yang baru.

Masa antara Rapat Pertama dan Kedua

Sampai akhir rapat pertama, masih belum ditemukan kesepakatan untuk perumusan dasar negara, sehingga akhirnya dibentuklah panitia kecil untuk menggodok berbagai masukan. Panitia kecil beranggotakan 9 orang dan dikenal pula sebagai Panitia Sembilan dengan susunan sebagai berikut:

Setelah melakukan kompromi antara 4 orang dari kaum kebangsaan (nasionalis) dan 4 orang dari pihak Islam, tanggal 22 Juni 1945 Panitia Sembilan kembali bertemu dan menghasilkan rumusan dasar negara yang dikenal dengan Piagam Jakarta (Jakarta Charter) yang berisikan: a. Ketuhanan dengan kewajiban menjalankan syariat Islam bagi pemeluk-pemeluknya b. Kemanusiaan yang adil dan beradab c. Persatuan Indonesia d. Kerakyatan yang dipimpin oleh hikmat kebijaksanaan dalam permusyawaratan perwakilan e. Keadilan sosial bagi seluruh rakyat Indonesia

Rapat Kedua

Rapat kedua berlangsung 10-17 Juli 1945 dengan tema bahasan bentuk negara, wilayah negara, kewarganegaraan, rancangan Undang-Undang Dasar, ekonomi dan keuangan, pembelaan negara, pendidikan dan pengajaran. Dalam rapat ini dibentuk Panitia Perancang Undang-Undang Dasar beranggotakan 19 orang dengan ketua Ir. Soekarno, Panitia Pembelaan Tanah Air dengan ketua Abikoesno Tjokrosoejoso dan Panitia Ekonomi dan Keuangan diketuai Mohamad Hatta.

Dengan pemungutan suara, akhirnya ditentukan wilayah Indonesia merdeka yakni wilayah Hindia Belanda dahulu, ditambah dengan Malaya, Borneo Utara, Papua, Timor-Portugis, dan pulau-pulau sekitarnya.^[3]^[4]

Pada tanggal 11 Juli 1945 Panitia Perancang UUD membentuk lagi panitia kecil beranggotakan 7 orang yaitu:

Pada tanggal 13 Juli 1945 Panitia Perancang UUD mengadakan sidang untuk membahas hasil kerja panitia kecil perancang UUD tersebut.

Pada tanggal 14 Juli 1945, rapat pleno BPUPKI menerima laporan Panitia Perancang UUD yang dibacakan oleh Ir. Soekarno. Dalam laporan tersebut tercantum tiga masalah pokok yaitu: a. pernyataan Indonesia merdeka b. pembukaan UUD c. batang tubuh UUD

Konsep proklamasi kemerdekaan rencananya akan disusun dengan mengambil tiga alenia pertama Piagam Jakarta. Sedangkan konsep Undang-Undang Dasar hampir seluruhnya diambil dari alinea keempat Piagam Jakarta.

Karena BPUPKI dianggap terlalu cepat ingin melaksanakan proklamasi kemerdekaan, maka Jepang membubarkannya dan membentuk Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (PPKI) (独立準備委員会 Dokuritsu Junbi Iinkai^?, lit. Komite Persiapan Kemerdekaan) pada tanggal 7 Agustus 1945 yang diketuai oleh Ir. Soekarno.

Persidangan

Tanggal 9 Agustus 1945, sebagai pimpinan PPKI yang baru, Soekarno, Hatta dan Radjiman Wedyodiningrat diundang ke Dalat untuk bertemu Marsekal Terauchi. Setelah pertemuan tersebut, PPKI tidak dapat bertugas karena para pemuda mendesak agar proklamasi kemerdekaan tidak dilakukan atas nama PPKI, yang dianggap merupakan alat buatan Jepang. Bahkan rencana rapat 16 Agustus 1945 tidak dapat terlaksana karena terjadi peristiwa Rengasdengklok.

Setelah proklamasi, pada tanggal 18 Agustus 1945, PPKI memutuskan antara lain:

mengesahkan Undang-Undang Dasar,
memilih dan mengangkat Ir. Soekarno sebagai presiden dan Drs. M. Hatta sebagai wakil presiden RI,
membentuk Komite Nasional untuk membantu tugas presiden sebelum DPR/MPR terbentuk.

Berkaitan dengan UUD, terdapat perubahan dari bahan yang dihasilkan oleh BPUPKI, antara lain:

Kata Muqaddimah diganti dengan kata Pembukaan.
Pada pembukaan alenia keempat anak kalimat Ketuhanan, dengan menjalankan syariat Islam bagi pemeluk-pemeluknya diganti dengan Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa.
Pada pembukaan alenia keempat anak kalimat "Menurut kemanusiaan yang adil dan beradab" diganti menjadi "kemanusiaan yang adil dan beradab".
Pada pasal 6:1 yang semula berbunyi Presiden ialah orang Indonesia Asli dan beragama Islam diganti menjadi Presiden adalah orang Indonesia Asli

Engineers tasked with building an airport are faced with countless challenges: The ideal location needs ample space, endless flat ground, favorable winds and great visibility. But spots in the real world are rarely ideal, and engineers are forced to work with what they have, making sure that the end product is the safest possible structure for pilots. A survey of airports around the world turns up a mixed bag, ranging from dangerous and rugged landing strips to mega-size facilities that operate like small cities. Here, PM explores the world's most remarkable airports and why they stand out.

1. Kansai International Airport

Osaka, Japan

Land is a scarce resource in Japan, so engineers headed roughly 3 miles offshore into Osaka Bay to build this colossal structure. Work on the manmade island started in 1987, and by 1994 jumbo jets were touching down. Travelers can get from the airport to the main island of Honshu via car, railroad or even a high-speed ferry.

Kansai's artificial island is 2.5 miles long and 1.6 miles wide—so large that it's visible from space. Earthquakes, dangerous cyclones, an unstable seabed, and sabotage attempts from protestors are just some of the variables engineers were forced to account for. As impressive as the airport is, Stewart Schreckengast, a professor of aviation technology at Purdue University and a former aviation consultant with MITRE, cautions that climate change and rising sea levels pose a very real threat to the airport's existence. "When this was built, [engineers] probably didn't account for global warming," he says. "In 50 years or so, this might be underwater."

2. Gibraltar Airport

Between Morocco and Spain sits the tiny British territory of Gibraltar. Construction of the airport dates back to World War II, and it continues to serve as a base for the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, though commercial flights land on a daily basis.

Winston Churchill Avenue, Gibraltar's busiest road, cuts directly across the runway. Railroad-style crossing gates hold cars back every time a plane lands or departs. "There's essentially a mountain on one side of the island and a town on the other," Schreckengast says. "The runway goes from side to side on the island because it's the only flat space there, so it's the best they can do. It's a fairly safe operation as far as keeping people away," he says, "It just happens to be the best place to land, so sometimes it's a road and sometimes it's a runway."

3. Madeira International Airport

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is a small island far off the coast of Portugal, which makes an airport that is capable of landing commercial-size aircraft vital to its development. This airport's original runway was only about 5000 feet long, posing a huge risk to even the most experienced pilots and limiting imports and tourism.

Engineers extended the runway to more than 9000 feet by building a massive girder bridge atop about 200 pillars. The bridge, which itself is over 3000 feet long and 590 feet wide, is strong enough to handle the weight of 747s and similar jets. In 2004, the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering selected the expansion project for its Outstanding Structure Award, noting that the design and construction was both "sensitive to environmental and aesthetic considerations."

4. Don Mueang International Airport

Bangkok, Thailand

From a distance Don Mueang International looks like any other midsize airport. However, smack-dab in the middle of the two runways is an 18-hole golf course.

Schreckengast, who has worked on consulting projects at this airport, says one of the major problems is that the only taxiways were located at the end of the runways. "We recommended that they build an additional taxiway in the middle, from side to side, and they said ‘absolutely not, that will take out a green and one fairway.'" The airport and the course were originally an all-military operation, but have since opened up to commercial traffic. Security threats, however, have limited the public's access to the greens.

5. Ice Runway

Antarctica

The Ice Runway is one of three major airstrips used to haul supplies and researchers to Antarctica's McMurdo Station. As its name implies, there are no paved runways here—just long stretches of ice and snow that are meticulously groomed.

There is no shortage of space on the Ice Runway, so super-size aircraft like the C-130 Hercules and the C-17 Globemaster III can land with relative ease. The real challenge is making sure that the weight of the aircraft and cargo doesn't bust the ice or get the plane stuck in soft snow. As the ice of the runway begins to break up, planes are redirected to Pegasus Field or Williams Field, the two other airstrips servicing the continent.

6. Congonhas Airport

Sao Paulo, Brazil

Most major cities have an airport, but rarely are they built just 5 miles from the city center, especially in metropolises like Sao Paulo. Congonhas' close proximity to downtown can be attributed in part to the fact that it was completed in 1936, with the city experiencing rapid development in the following decades.

While having an airport only 5 miles from the city center may be a convenience for commuters, it places a strain on both pilots and air traffic control crews. "It becomes a challenge in terms of safety to just get the plane in there," Schreckengast says. "Then you throw on noise restrictions and these terribly awkward arrival and departure routes that are needed to minimize your noise-print and it becomes quite challenging for pilots." Fortunately, Sao Paulo's many high-rise buildings are far enough away from the airport that they aren't an immediate obstacle for pilots landing or taking off.

7. Courchevel International Airport

Courchevel, France

Getting to the iconic ski resort of Courchevel requires navigating the formidable French Alps before making a hair-raising landing at Courchevel International Airport. The runway is about 1700 feet long, but the real surprise is the large hill toward the middle of the strip.

"You take off downhill and you land going uphill," Schreckengast says. He adds that the hill, which has an 18.5 percent grade, is so steep that small planes could probably gain enough momentum rolling down it with no engines to safely glide off the edge. Landing at Courchevel is obviously no easy task, so pilots are required to obtain certification before attempting to conquer the dangerous runway.

8. Princess Juliana International Airport

Simpson Bay, Saint Maarten

Nothing says fun in the sun like roaring engines and the smell of jet exhaust. Landing on this Caribbean island forces pilots to fly over a small strip of beach, clear a decent-size fence and pass over a road just before hitting the runway.

Not many airports are flanked by oceanfront property filled with tourists standing under incoming aircraft. While the tourists are not really in harm's way—with the exception of their hearing—Schreckengast says that trucks driving on the small road between the beach and the runway could be at risk. "The challenge is to make sure there's not a big semi truck coming through when the plane is landing. It becomes a vertical obstacle, and, if the truck is light, the jet blast could blow it over.

9. Svalbard Airport

Svalbard, Norway

Svalbard is a cluster of Norwegian islands sitting in the Arctic Ocean. While there are three airports within the archipelago, two of which are used mainly to transport miners, Svalbard Airport is open to commercial travel, making it the world's northernmost airport that tourists can book tickets to.

Engineers used the region's brutally cold climate to their favor during construction and built the runway on a layer of permafrost. The airport was completed in 1975, but slight seasonal changes caused sections of the runway to become uneven, forcing the need to repave the runway on several occasions. A project was launched in 1989 aimed at insulating troublesome sections of the runway from the ground, which proved relatively successful. However, a 2002 study indicates that rising temperatures in the area may increase the need and frequency of maintenance efforts and repaving.

10. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport

Saba, Netherlands Antilles

Getting to this paradise-like island can be a bit distressing thanks to a 1300-foot-long runway, slightly longer than most aircraft carrier runways.

Large planes aren't landing here, but the small runway is difficult even for Cessnas and similar aircraft. "The little X means don't land there," says Schreckengast, a former Navy pilot who is no stranger to landing on less than lengthy runways. "It's challenging, but if you don't have something like that, the people here don't get things they routinely need, like mail." Given the limited amount of land and rolling topography of the island, not many other options exist.

Notwithstanding its scenic beauty, Mount Vesuvius has given way to a number of eruptions, among which the one occurring in AD 79 was violent enough to destroy the prosperous Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

9. Mount Vesuvius, Italy (3,500 deaths in December 1631)

Mount Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples, Italy holds the record for being the only active volcano in Europe that has erupted in the last hundred years. Right from the Roman era, Vesuvius has kept erupting time and again with varying intensity. The eruption of 1631 was of a particularly destructive nature that took its toll on almost 3,500 residents and their village settlements. Apart from the molten lava, streams of boiling hot water was also ejected that served to aggravate the devastations.

8. Galunggung, Indonesia (4,011 deaths in 1882)

This is yet another of the deadly active stratovolcanoes of Indonesia, belonging to the Pacific Ring of Fire that erupted in West Java of Indonesia in 1882. The Ten Thousand Hills of Tasik Malaja on the southeast slope of Galunggung Volcano has long remained a subject of speculation for Western geologists who have propounded different theories for their formation. While some suggest that, the accumulating deposits of liquid lava leakage formed them, others propose they have been created artificially.

7. Kelut, Indonesia (5,110 deaths in 1919)

This volcano located in East Java and Indonesia is notorious for almost 30 explosive eruptions that have the marked its history since 1000 A.D. The eruptions occurring in the years 1951, 1966, and 1990 were collectively responsible for the death of 250 people. The 1919 eruption was of a magnitude that has surpassed all recent records of destruction mainly due to its massive mudflow that took 5,110 lives.

6. Laki, Iceland (9,350 deaths in 1783)

Laki is the other name for the term Lakagígar meaning ‘Craters of Laki’ – a system of Eldgjá canyon and Katla volcano found between the Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers near the Kirkjubæjarklaustur town. After the large eruption of AD 934, history repeated itself on 8 June 1783 when about 14 km³ of thick basalt lava emitting from the Grímsvötn volcano and Laki fissure flooded the plains.

5. Mount Unzen, Japan (14,300 deaths in 1792)

Mount Unzen stands out as an active volcano from among a group of interlacing stratovolcanoes bracing the city of Shimabara in the Kyūshū Island. The volcano has again become active in the last decade and pyroclastic flows were reported latest in 1991. However, these are nothing compared to the 1792 post-eruption earthquake and the subsequent collapse of many volcanic domes including the eastern part of the Mayuyama dome that set in motion killer tsunamis. This was coupled by the deadly dacitic lava flow from the nearby Fugen-dake peak. Recent tests are being carried out by volcanologists to find out the possibility of the repetition of such tragedy.

4. Mount Ruiz, Colombia (25,000 deaths in October 1985)

The Andean stratovolcano Nevado Del Ruiz or Mount Ruiz is located in Colombia’s Caldas Department that falls within the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’. Although this volcanic cone had been active since the early Pleistocene epoch, its 1985 eruption and the subsequent mudflow were phenomenal and sufficient to wipe out the very existence of Armero. The October 1985 disaster that measured 3 in the Volcanic Explosive Index came as a shock since Mt. Ruiz had been inactive for 150 years.

3. Mount Pelee, Martinique (30,000 deaths in April-May 1902)

Situated in the northern fringe of Martinique, Mt. Pelee is one of the greatest stratovolcano of the world that created havoc in the city of Saint-Pierre with its massive 1902 eruption. Saint-Pierre use to be a fairly large and prosperous city of the French Caribbean until the unlucky day of 25 April when a series of explosive eruptions heralded the oncoming catastrophe. Within no time, the streets of Saint-Pierre were covered in layers of volcanic ash.

2. Krakatoa Volcanic Island, Indonesia (36,417 deaths in August 1883)

This notorious volcanic island is situated between Sumatra and Java. The devastations caused by the serial eruptions on August 26 and 27 of 1883 have even outshone the Hiroshima nuclear bombings in impact and sound. It was heard from as far as Australia and Mauritius! The eruption that ranged up to 6 in the Volcanic Explosive Index wiped out two-thirds of the Krakatoa Island. It was followed by all-engulfing tsunamis that ravished the city of Merak and disrupted vessels floating on the South African coast.

1. Mount Tambora, Indonesia (92,000 deaths in the April 1815 eruption)

This 4,300 m high active stratovolcano located in Sumbawa Island of Indonesia drained the contents of its massive magma chamber in April 1815 accumulated over centuries. The impact of this titanic explosion measured 7 in the Volcanic Explosive Index and was felt throughout 1816 with gross climatic changes, a mini tsunami, volcanic ash rain and destruction of crops and livestock that caused a lasting famine in Northern Hemisphere.
