A Guide to Website Development

Efective websites take time to develop and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. So, we’re sharing our website development process. See the steps we take making successful websites for our clients.

Examine the Steps from Initial Meeting to Launch

Download as PDF | Download as JPG

Effective websites take time to develop and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. So, we’re sharing our website development process. A first of many guides to come. Initailly built to help potential clients learn about our processes, we also hope other developers and designers can gain insight on how to effectively approach their projects.

It All Starts With a Friendly “Hello”

Setting the time aside to prepare a straight-forward and thought provoking questionnaire often provides the right insight needed to ensure efforts are aimed in the right direction. Our team invests this time for each potential client, before our initial meeting.

If the initial meeting goes well, our next step is doing some research on the client’s industry as well as on our own internal team – to ensure we have the resources necessary to handle the job. Rule #1 to those freelancing out there: never take on a project you can’t deliver on.

If things are looking good, we’ll put together an estimate or “scope of work” as part of a detailed proposal for our potential client. If we get the “green light” to proceed, then off we go.

Don’t Skimp On The Research

A key component to any successful website project is an appropriate amount of first-hand research. We never rely on second-hand research to make actionable decisions. Often, what the client wants a website for (sales, leads, etc…) will be the end result, while the key actions the website will still need to be identified.

This is why first-hand research is always critical to the process. Whether keyword research, a questionnaire, or a focus group study, your research will lead to the insight that will guide the direction of 95% of your work. Good or bad – so never skimp on your research.

Rule #2 to those freelancers – take a few courses and read a few books on how to conduct proper market research.

Measure Twice, Cut Once

At Tiko, we believe in “measure twice, cut once” which means that plenty of planning and review is done before we get to the Concept or development stage. Remember the kid in shop class that almost cut his thumb off with the band saw? We strive to be the opposite of him.

Tiko develops a Site Plan for every website project before any copy is written or pages are designed. For most clients, the Site Plan involves a list of pages that will make up their website – including parent categories and sub-topic pages. In addition, we’ll normally include page titles, META descriptions, and potential URLs. SEO websites will normally involve a bit more information at the Site Plan stage, as well.

Once approved, the Site Plan provides our foundation for mighty copywriting and moving design.

To Produce a Mighty Book, You Must Choose a Mighty Theme

Those words from the great Herman Melville ring true to how we approach combining words and images to help tell a great story. A effective image will do the following:

Pull-in a user’s interest;

Evoke specific feelings and emotions;

Stock photography will make a user think “I’ve seen that guy somewhere before…” instead of helping to evoke a specific feeling or emotion – in short, stock photography will often take away from your website’s impact. So we make a rule to use fresh photography, whenever possible.

Rule #3 to freelancers: if photography isn’t in your client’s budget then look for stock photos that are more conceptual in nature, or try designing some icons instead.

Once the right images are in place, we’ll select a copywriter with the right prose to help reinforce the website’s look and feel, and to evoke a specific action or set of actions. Whenever possible our team encourages our clients to provide a budget for copywriting services.

Great writers don’t often start out writing Moby Dick. So let the competition write their own stuff (or hire someone on the “cheap”) while you enjoy the benefits of effective web copy: more leads, more sales, a better ROI.

Form Meets Function – and They Hang Out in Our Wire Frames

At Tiko, we’re always looking to develop websites that are creative while also serving a purpose. Call it “form meets function” if you will, which is the reason why we start with wire framing before design.

Simply put, a wire frame is a schematic or “blue print” of a website’s framework. Our team will work back from the site objective(s), and use specific techniques to arrange key elements in the wire frame. This is where that research we did earlier on comes in handy – you need to know the real objectives before designing your wire frame(s).

Once we’re satisfied with the wire frame process, our design team will build out a theme and incorporate images, font types, graphics, etc… and provide the client with some flat files, or static images of potential website pages.

To Be Continued…

We’ll post the second part of this blog post a little later on, focusing on how our development team approaches their part of the website process.

Don’t forget to download our website development guide.

Evaluating a PPC campaign using Break-Even Analysis

Making marketing decisions can be difficult. Using reliable tools like break-even analysis can help make those decisions simpler, and help generate more dollars for your business.

Making (Good) Marketing Decisions Can Be Tough

Ever wonder why there are so many advertising agencies in business? It's because marketing is not just an art; it's moreso a science. In fact, that really great TV ad you saw last night, likely came to fruition after months of customer research, test ads, grey hairs (sorry Tom), and analytics.

Numbers R' Us - Our Real Name

The good news is that, with online marketing, we can measure every aspect of a campaign. Even better (unless you secretly enjoy going through hours of data), you can apply reliable tools and methods that can quickly sift through that data to unearth valuable insights.

Better still... are tools you can use before-hand to help with the decision making process, to gain insight regarding costs, revenues and profits.

Introducing Break-Even Analysis

One of the simpler quantitative analysis tools out there, break-even analysis can be of great assistance during the decision-making process.

If you have 5 minutes, check out the latest blog post from Glenn Walker, Partner at Tiko Digital, about how you can evaluate a pay-per-click campaign using break-even analysis. A thank-you to PPC Associates for giving our article a little real estate.

Pay-per-click campaigns (example: Google AdWords) are commonly used by businesses of all sizes, and can help drive more sales, leads or promote an event. So, give the article a read and then give us a call if you have any questions - we love talking shop!

Over the years, we've increased online profits for our clients by developing creative campaigns that deliver on key business goals. It's a tricky balance, finding the right mix of:

Marketing technique

Artisitic design

Impactful copy

Technology

Every campaign is different, and each requires its own proper mix of technique and tools to ensure success.

It's All In The Mix

Your marketing campaigns are just one part of your overall success, however. You also need to have the right mix of products/services, kept at the right price(s), housed in the right location.

There's something that encompasses all of the above, and more: the Marketing Mix.

Harvard Approved

Created in 1964 by Neil H. Borden, a Harvard Professor, the Marketing Mix has lasted the test of time. Likely not something your competitors have spent time reviewing, it's definitely worth your time to get to know - you might find some great ideas to help improve your business!

We know, you're busy! So Glenn Walker, Partner here at Tiko, recently wrote a great article for PPC Associates, summarizing the Marketing Mix.

Measuring Advertising Results Using Web Analytics

Web analytics is a major part of determining the success of your online presence. You can use web analytics to measure how your website functions as a tool for your business. As a business owner, you know that advertising can either help or hurt your online business depending on how it affects your cash flow. In using web analytics, you can evaluate how advertising really helps your website perform by assessing its contribution to your business.

Checking your website’s performance

To start using web analytics, you need to define the purpose of having your website. Do you sell specific goods on your site? Is it an online shopping cart? Are you offering services or simply provide content to those who share the same interests with you? Do you want your website to be a place where your customers can give their views on your products? Classifying your website is crucial to knowing how it will play a key role in growing your business. This will also help verify the type of data that should be monitored in web analytics, regardless if it is customer retention or augmenting sales.

Setting goals and metrics to increasing site productivity

Once you’ve identified what kind of website you are putting up, you can now use web analytics to determine your own benchmark. You can start by listing down what is important for your business in line with the purpose of the website, and use this to set the bar on how to measure performance. If you have an e-commerce site, you can use web analytics to track sales conversions. If you plan to use your website for lead generation or for sharing of interests, then web analytics will give you information on the number of page views, membership subscriptions, or file downloads. You can craft a customized marketing strategy based on your needs, and this will help determine your advertising costs. When you follow a carefully devised advertising campaign, it will be easier to see the impact based on the results using web analytics.

How to measure effectiveness of marketing strategies

How your site visitors ended up on your homepage is vital. When you launch an advertising campaign, you can trace their user activity using web analytics. You get to learn whether your search engine optimization was effective enough when statistics show that most of these users came from search results. Or if an existing affiliate program is working well for you by referring more people to visit your site, you can decide to continue this program. Comparing unique visitors versus actual sales, you can assess if the campaign was a success only in spreading the word about your site. This way you get to pinpoint which strategy is effective for increasing product awareness, and which is highly recommended for increasing revenue.

Take time to observe and gather statistics until you’ve reached a substantial amount of information on site activity. Keep in mind that it is possible to get both quantitative and qualitative data from web analytics, and the idea is to pay attention to the behavioral patterns of your site visitors. For example, unique visits are high on your homepage yet only a small number of these visitors continue to sign up on the subscription page. You can test the visitor experience of your website from the time a user arrives on the homepage until how a user gets directed to the sign up page.

The results of your advertising campaigns are of great consequence to measuring site performance. With various tools for web analytics it has become easier to create a yardstick for checking your website’s impact to the business. You wouldn’t want to waste your money on advertising that does not give you the results you wanted. Using web analytics to measure the effectiveness of advertising results, you now be confident enough to make sound decisions that can help improve both your website and your business.

When most of us hear about online marketing, we tend to conceive it as an expensive approach to marketing, only viable to the huge companies with gigantic marketing budgets. Nothing could be further from the truth. As it turns out, online marketing is in fact the most affordable marketing approach, especially if you opt for one of the low cost online marketing solutions we will be exploring shortly. The most attractive thing about online marketing, however, is the fact that it is extremely scalable and adaptable. It can be shrunk to fit into the needs of the smallest business. And at the same time, it can be leveraged to suit the needs of the biggest mega-buck enterprise.

Online Marketing Solutions - Getting Started

One of the biggest challenges with traditional marketing tends to be in terms of the considerable amounts of money one needs to have, to initiate a marketing campaign. This is like where we are told that it will cost you $50 to run an ad on some radio or TV channel, but that you will need to invest, upfront, some $1,000 dollars to pay the creative agencies for designing the adverts and so on.

On the other hand, there are online marketing approaches that you can getting started on free of charge – and, with the right amount of effort and skill, still get as good results as you would get on an expensive radio or TV campaign. Even for the paid for online marketing solutions, we have some that you can get started on a budget of, literary, tens of dollars. The Google Adwords program is one such approach, where all you need to get started is some $10 – which, at something like $0.05 per ad, can buy you some 200 advertising spots!

Briefly, then, here is an outline of the low cost online marketing solutions open to you:

Website creation: this is the starting point in most online marketing campaigns. And it is not as expensive as most people imagine. You can get a simple, yet decent website designed for as little as $1000. You can then integrate other features as time goes on – but having started with the $1000. There are even web hosting companies that give you tools with which you can create a simple site for yourself, in which case, the initial investment would go down to as little as the web hosting cost (which, by the way, is typically less than $10 per month).

Search engine optimization: having created the website, the next online marketing solution would be that which gets people to actually visit it. Many people get stuck here – and end up believing that online marketing doesn’t work (when, after having created websites, nobody seems to visit them). Yet, for as little as $500 paid to a good SEO agency, you can get tons of people to visit the website – after having optimized it to be easily found by the search engines.

Pay per click advertising: if you want ‘instant results’ following the creation of your website, and are therefore not willing to wait for the considerable periods of time required before search engines can start noticing it, there is a short-cut for you: pay per click advertising. For the previously mentioned $10 paid to a program like Google Adwords, you can instantly get adverts to your website running.

Facebook marketing: this is about creating Facebook ‘pages’ and ‘groups’ for your products. You can then have people join as fans and members to the product pages and groups respectively. This is likely to have a viral effect and the end result is where a lot of publicity for your products is generated.

Blog marketing: this is particularly ideal in the business lines where getting good business is dependant upon your coming to be regarded as an expert. The blog is one forum on which you can showcase your expertise, and soon come to be regarded as an ‘authority’ in whatever field. That then, would pull customers your way, in search of your expertise. The budget for this? There are blogging platforms that allow you to run a blog absolutely free of charge. If you opt for paid hosting, a budget of as little as $7 will get your blog hosted for a month. Getting people to visit your blog then becomes a matter of pay per click advertising (for as little as $10 starting budget), or SEO. Contributing to forums frequented by people likely to be your clients, and leaving links is another way you can pull visitors to your blog, from where you can convert them into clients.

If you own a website and you want to upgrade your site’s performance, then of course you would want to know the behavior of your website visitors. Google Analytics is surely among the primary tools that most website owners use to analyze site traffic. You may have already started using Google Analytics so some of its features are already familiar to you. Understanding how it helps encourage growth of your website is easy as long as you know how the features work. Here are five features that you should know when you’re using Google Analytics to track information on your website visitors:

If you own a website and you want to upgrade your site’s performance, then of course you would want to know the behavior of your website visitors. Google Analytics is surely among the primary tools that most website owners use to analyze site traffic. You may have already started using Google Analytics so some of its features are already familiar to you. Understanding how it helps encourage growth of your website is easy as long as you know how the features work. Here are five features that you should know when you’re using Google Analytics to track information on your website visitors:

1. Fully integrated with Google AdWords. You can now use Google Analytics side by side with ads posted via Google AdWords. When you use AdWords on your website, Google Analytics automatically records information on website visitors for every keyword used or ad campaign launch. With this you can monitor how many website visitors clicked on your ads, which clicks led to eventual sales, actual costs incurred versus revenue generated from the campaign, and so on.

2. Increasing awareness for your website through search engine results. Every time website visitors arrive on your site through search engine results, it gets registered on your Google Analytics dashboard. By learning which search engines direct users to your site the most, you will be able to identify which are effective in bringing website visitors. This will help you in deciding how to appropriately spend your online marketing budget to increase hits on your website. There are a lot of search engines that you can use, but knowing which gives the best results will affect your decision on making a highly effective yet less costly marketing campaign.

3. Use of popular keywords matches to increase page hits. Keyword optimization is important. Your website should always appear at the top of search results, therefore it is important to know the keywords used by your website visitors. Certain trends can also determine the weight of the keyword so that your site will always be in the search results. On your Google Analytics account dashboard, there is a way for you to check what most of your website visitors use. Once you know what keyword matches helped website visitors find your site, it will be easier to recognize those that you can use to optimize your site’s search results.

4. Record the bounce rate of website visitors. You can tell if users of your website exit the page right away through the bounce rate. The bounce rate is the percentage of website visitors who arrive on your site only to leave it soon after. If you have a high bounce rate on your homepage, you may have too much content that some website visitors who view it may get overloaded with information and may not know how to proceed, thus losing potential customers along the way. You can fix this problem since Google Analytics also shows how long website visitors stay on a specific page before they leave, and help you identify problems on your links.

5. Report website visitors’ behavior via the navigation summary. To know more about how to transform website visitors into customers, the navigation summary includes data on user activity. You can learn which areas of your website visitors are more interested in, where they clicked on the page, which links are most clicked, and so on. It maps out the user experience so you can quickly recognize if there is a need to fix the site structure, or highlight a particular content like an image or text that most website visitors check.

There are a number of other features that Google Analytics offer, like information on location and referrals plus your website’s connection performance. Most website owners have used the above features to attract and gain more website visitors. It also helps them assess their spending ability to ensure highly desirable returns on their marketing campaigns. When you apply online marketing methods using the features available, you will realize how Google Analytics can really help you grow your business and let your website reach its full potential.

Using Surveys to Get the Voice of the Customer

As a business owner you should gain insight on what users want out of a product, so that you can get them interested in yours. You can use analytics to determine web traffic and user behavior, but what most people don’t know is that you can also see customer preferences with analytical data from your website. When defining your products and services, it’s always important to understand what your customer needs. Some just don’t rely on analytics alone, but also use surveys to solicit feedback directly from their customers.

Listening to the voice of the customer

Product requirements are usually derived from competitors and existing products, but understanding the customer’s desires is key to ensuring a well-embraced product or service. Using surveys to support data from web analytics in finding a match between what you offer and what the customer seeks may seem daunting, but it’s actually pretty basic.

Information that you get from your site’s analytics can help you focus on the customer’s voice. Your site visitors may prefer to browse through a catalogue rather than individual product places, or they may choose to buy cheaper goods than those that you are offering. Checking the statistics on your website’s analytics can definitely show you how your users are behaving, but surveys are paramount in providing an honest view of how customers perceive your products or services. Customer retention is critical so as not to let them stray and prefer competitors over your brand. Getting direct customer response will help you made timely adjustments to your list of offerings without hurting customer loyalty.

What surveys can do

Surveys are a great support tool to web analytics. Since analytics collect statistical data, most conclusions are derived from a numerical perspective. How many and how much may not be sufficient to tell us qualitative information. Generally customers cannot directly state what they need, so it’s up to you to know how to effectively listen to the customer and discern how they want that need fulfilled.

To aid data from web analytics in knowing what customers want, you should launch a customer survey & get reactions directly from customers. Launching a survey is probably the best means to measure service and product quality. If done right after a purchase or a transaction, customer responses are honest so you’ll be sure that data is precisely accurate. In web analytics, you understand what issues customers have and when customers are having problems. Surveys add that remarkable truth by answering why, and in the process allows you to do your magic by identifying how you can improve this experience.

Engaging your customers to a dialogue by letting them share their thoughts while you apply the changes they want to see on your products and services is a great way to build lasting customer relationships. Since customer surveys are done right after an experience with your brand, their views are still clear and fresh. This makes the data reliable enough for you to make decisions on changes you wish to implement on your brand, and by being backed up with data from web analytics, also provides a way for you to respond to them by giving them what they need. Being able to detect customer needs that are unstated is also a great tool when introducing a new product or service. You can build relationships with new customers, and at the same time retain old customers by knowing their needs.

You can customize your own survey form and indicate the pertinent questions that you think should be asked. When choosing which questions should be on the survey, you can use relevant information gathered from web analytics as your basis. Customer responses from the survey form are an integral part of product development as well as branding, and you should use it to leverage how customers will react to your brand. If you’re seeking ways to recognize how your brand is appreciated by your customers, use surveys to collect customer opinions. This is also one way to ensure them that you value them as a customer, and will be incredibly useful in promoting your business.

Why Invest in an Analytics Expert?

Putting up your own website may appear to be quite easy, but what’s next after your launch? Having a laidback approach towards your website may hurt your earnings significantly. In fact, you may be missing out on a golden opportunity to increase awareness and popularity of your website. The hardest part is realizing that this opportunity, if not utilized properly, may actually translate into lost sales and revenue.

This is why you need a web analytics expert. An analytics expert can advise you on your website’s performance, and help swell the chances of possible customers finding your website. Not only that, an analytics expert can study your site’s user statistics to pinpoint sections in your website that need improvement. The reality is that your website will not contribute anything to your business if you do not take the initiative to look for ways on how to enhance its capabilities on introducing your products and services to potential clients.

What an analytics expert can do

An analytics expert has demonstrated proven success in improving website traffic. These experts have both the experience and the ability to transform an underperforming website into a revenue-generating one by studying data on web visitor usage. They add value to an existing website by following tried and tested methods of web analytics to amplify your website’s profitability.

Getting an analytics expert is the first critical step towards understanding your customers. In order to refer people to your website, an analytics expert will ask you to employ the use of web analytics tools. These tools will gather relevant data on user habits by those who visit your website, and share how they found your website. Analytics experts define how you should measure your website’s performance, and will use the tools to put these metrics in place. Once you have the necessary tools and have spent enough time collecting data, the analytics expert will check your website’s user interaction.

Usually a huge chunk of data is collected, and it may be hard to differentiate what’s important and what’s not. An analytics expert will be able to interpret any statistical data from your website and filter the essential information to gauge your website’s standing. Immediately he or she can declare whether a marketing strategy is not working, or visits are not converting into sales. The analytics expert will call your attention to those areas that need improvement, set targets and will work together with you to determine an effective formula towards hitting those targets.

How an analytics expert can help boost your website performance

Your website might look like it needs no fixing to you, but an analytics expert will use the data collected to dig deeper and tell you right away what’s wrong with your website. There are many reasons why a website is not performing. Among these may be slow webpage loading time, difficult site navigation, inconsistent color schemes, lack of related content, and others that can be easily fixed with the help of the analytics expert. A low retention rate for website visitors may be attributed to unreadable text and inappropriate content, or there may be too much going on the page that visitors tend to shy away from browsing through the rest of the website. An analytics expert can also recommend effective marketing strategies to encourage more visits. These can be anywhere from using pay per click to search engine optimization, or partnering with other popular websites to get referrals. Employing an excellent marketing campaign is a sure-fire way to spread popularity, and this is where an analytics expert can really help.

Invest in an analytics expert

Only an analytics expert can guarantee success for your website and ensure high returns or increased profits. You can undoubtedly train yourself to study web trends and apply it to your website, but it takes hardcore experience to steer your website into the right direction towards productivity. Make sure you do not waste the hard work you put on your website, so go and hire an effective analytics expert. When planning to develop your website, investing in an analytics expert is the way to go.
