This story could have been part of Doctor Who’s first season but writer, Moris Fahri, was unwilling to undertake the extensive rewrites asked of him by the Doctor Who production office. However, he kept his script intact, so Big Finish was able to adapt it into an audio drama in 2010. In this episode our intrepid time team discuss the setting and what they know about Alexander the Great. Along the way they discuss Christianity in Doctor Who, John Dorney’s driven performance, Ian’s wrestling prowess, and the Doctor playing to the crowd. They’ll also discuss things that don’t work and what those extensive rewrites were probably all about.

Along the way they’ll make anime references, explain how this story inspired part of Raiders of the Lost Ark, speculate about whether time traveling slackers from the future with rescue Ping Cho, and why novelizations matter. Along the way, Juliette obsesses about the lack of resolution to Ping-Cho’s storyline and whether or not she finds true love. Nathan wonders at the lack of security in the Khan’s palace. Both enjoy William Hartnell’s backbreaking labors in bringing the Doctor back to the forefront at the end of the story. They say that the the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, so plant that first step towards a device where you can download Timestreams, so that you can answer whether Marco Polo will ever notice Tegana’s moustache twirling.

They talk about the reasons for the BBC not having every Doctor Who story and why we can still hear the audio. Nathan gushes over the dialog while but Juliette thinks that it’s just an excuse for innuendo. Juliette talks about the friendship between Susan and Ping-Cho while Nathan wants to know when Susan became a beatnik. They discuss whether Marco Polo really ever did any of this and why no one can see how evil Tegana sounds. They also talk about how Ian and the Doctor seem sidelined, and Juliette takes extreme offense that no one listens to Barbara. They wrap things up as the story takes a turn towards another popular series that they both enjoy.

Juliette discusses Barbara’s love life as Nathan tries to downplay anything but the otp of Barbara and Ian. Meanwhile just what is happening in that final fight scene? The hosts could really use some help figuring it out.

Take a trip to the planet Skaro as they discuss the behind-the-scenes origins of the crazy creatures. They both discuss the obliviousness of the crew who don’t notice a flashing Geiger Counter, and then they have the first segment of Juliette’s costume corner as they discuss the horror of Thal fashion.

First up is an introductory episode where Nathan and Juliette introduce themselves. Then they review both the unaired and aired pilots of the series. Along the way they discuss the challenges of filming, whether there’s more chemistry than just what’s in the classroom between Ian and Barbara, issues with looking straight at the camera, what makes something ‘alive’, and whether the Doctor is just a violent kidnapper. Nathan brings up a lot of behind-the-scenes info and before it ends they’re interrupted by a very special cat. Please note: this recording was plagued by sound issues that we were only partially able to fix in editing. However, we didn’t want to re-record because we wanted our reactions to the discussion to be genuine. The sound issues have been addressed for future episodes.
