How I selected eSata over USB 3.0 for my Laptop

Weekend while designing backup plan for my Laptop, I am forced to upgrade my USB 2.0 external disk due to its low speed while transferring large files from HDD. So tempted USB 3.0 shopping. Not only 3.0 Drive, i need to purchase USB 3.0 adapter for my laptop. so 1 TB external drive+3.0 card / Adapter invoiced around $180.

While searching best USB 3 adopter for my Dell laptop , someone at cyberspace commented out as eSATA also works fine similar to USB 3. My DELL laptop (e64 series) have built in eSATA port that I never used. With increasing curiosity, searched further and found out that I can save $180. How ?

I have old 1 TB SATA hard disk idle at my unused desktop. So if I am able to connect my Dell eSATA port to that HDD, my problem will solve.With Help of Uncle Google, learned about eSATA cable. Quick EBAY search allowed to grab good eSATA cable for $4.

Now how to connect my eSATA port to external SATA hard disk?

Connecting Laptop eSATA to external SATA hdd is simple. Now problem is external SATA disk requires power. Like USB, eSATA can;t supply power to device. After searching old package boxes i got IDE to usb adapter with external power supply card. Ok now I am ready. Booted my Laptop and bingo! Windows 7 detected external hard disk in no time. Now time to check performance.

Excellent performance while transferring large files. 97-100MB constant speed.

In this way I am able to connect my Laptop eSATA port to external SATA hard disk and achieved good data transfer speed. Please share your eSATA/USB 3 experience here.

“Lets learn Netapp series” is free, copyright free tutorial on famous Netapp storage. We going to learn using netapp NTAP 7 series ( I know little bit old but enough to learn concepts ). If all works well, we can also learn NTAP 8 series also.

Recently I am forced to check 95 Linux hosts /etc/resolv.conf file and record those entries in single file. Time is very less for this task. How to execute same command on multiple Linux hosts at a time? initially I start writing small shell script with while do loop. Later thought, lets check somebody already have solution on Google.

Bingo! I got excellent tool, in fact it is bundled in my Ubuntu laptop. Star program name is “DSH”. DSH means Distributed shell, or dancer’s shell.You can download source and more details from http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/software/dsh.html

DSH config file location : /etc/dsh/dsh.conf. Just fill the host names in /etc/dsh/machines.list or ${sysconfdir}/machines.list and start executing command on them at a time.

example : dsh -a — cat /etc/resolv.conf

Good tool for Sys Admins . Suggest me if you have any best for this purpose.
