Introducing “Dear Northfield”, a Photo/Video Historic View of Our Town

About six months ago, I came up with an idea based on the Dear Photograph site, which superimposes old photos over current times, with the old photo held up in reference and the hand seen in the final product. I submitted a photo of myself mowing the yard when I was in 7th grade over that old home now. The basic idea behind the project is that you take a historical photograph and overlay it on a present day view. I showed Hayes Scriven of the NHS some of the stills around town that I had started to shoot and he decided to create a video utilizing various historical photos framed over modern day Northfield . With some artistic direction from Adam Gurno we came up with this. We hope you enjoy!

Following is a gallery of “animated gif” images, which is a mini-program that runs 2 images alternating on top of each other. I’ve tried to take a photo of the Cannon River from the same locations that I shot last year at this time when were having a “century-flood”. We are currently under a drought with very low river levels.

Touch Em All – John Gordon Retires (Audio of his final sign off)

I grew up listening to John Gordon call play-by-play on the radio for my baseball team. I really started listening in 1987 through this year, which is almost 25 years of broadcasting. At 162 games a year, not counting extra innings or innings that he sat out, he was in the press box for some 36,450 innings! WOW! And I’d bet I listened to half of those.

Now working for KYMN Radio in Northfield, a Minnesota Twins affiliate, I can say worked with John, in a round-about way.

Last night John called an exciting “walk-off” win by the Twins in their last game of the season, keeping them from the undesirable mark of 100 loses. I hit record on my computer and grabbed his final sign off in the post game, saying goodbye to us for the last time!

My Norhian-Project Covered by Local Paper

Thanks to Jerry Smith and Kaylin Hreha for the interest in my little spring project. Kaylin interview me last week for this article and it ran last Saturday. I also wanted to thank Kathy Ness at the Library for assisting in the coming-and-going of Norhians and Hayes Scriven at the Northfield Historic Society for lending me a bunch as well.

I’ve wanted to do this for many years and it was the advent of Facebook that allowed people to connect via my work. That’s what really kept me going.

Stock Car Races Featuring Local Personalities

Shakopee, Minn. (Aug. 1, 2011) – The celebrity “Race for Courage” was held Sunday, July 31, at Raceway Park in Shakopee, Minn. Eleven local celebrities got behind the wheels of stock cars to race against each other in a fun and speedy “awareness driver” for Cars for Courage, Courage Center’s vehicle donation program. I Just Scanned Every Northfield Yearbook Since 1877

That’s right. It took me about 3 months of scanning, but I did it.

I always wanted to somehow harvest all of the names and faces in a yearbook, but with Facebook and new digital ways, it seemed a waste to have this “social resource” sitting on the shelf.

How many times have you gone to your yearbooks over the years to look up the face of someone you went to school with or just to reminisce? We’ll if you are like me, you’ve hit the mother-load!

What I’ve done is scanned just the seniors, covers and pages of historical importance from every Northfield High School year book. Now, I must confess, there hasn’t been a yearbook published every since year since 1877, but I’ve scanned all that have been, beginning with the first version called the “Orange and Black” and then every “Norhian” starting in 1948.

In a moment, I’m going to link you to a page on my site dedicated to my findings along with various ways to view the scans. See, I’ve upload every scanned image to Facebook where alumni have devoured the pages, commenting, reflecting and “tagging” each other. When you tag a face, it instantly ties in your Facebook profile information to your image. This makes it a wonderful tool to search for people, finding old friends whom may not have the same last name that you knew.

I’ve had a few tell me they hadn’t ever seen their yearbook because they couldn’t afford one.
In the 50′s you’ll see stories of Yosh Murakami, an Asian choir director that dressed like a “Pirate” and would run around with a sword during pep-fests. This was the inspiration for the “Raider” mascot. Here’s a whole blog I did on it.

The best words a Dad could hear (Re-Post)

I few weeks ago I took my daughter Rylie to the Mall of America during the day for a father-daughter outing. I had taken off the day and she was on spring break. We went to eat at the “Rainforest Cafe” and then to the “Underwater World Adventures” then to the “Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park”. This used to be the old “Camp Snoopy”. We started on a few rides and eventually landed on the log roller coaster. This is the one where the log/boat floats throughout the ride and you end in a watery fall. Well, we rode this one so many times, the operators almost knew us by name. We knew every turn and when every creepy dude would jump out. Oh, we also got more and more wet as the day went on.

Well, as we were walking out to the ramp to go home, Rylie was holding my hand and said “Dad, this has been the best day of my whole life”. I replied, “life will only get better and better too.” It was a great day!

Northfield Featured on State Wide Twins Network Program

This past Saturday, Chris Adebury of the Minnesota Twins Radio Network aided an interview over their state work network featuring Tim Freeland. Tim spoke about the role of baseball and it’s tradition in our community, mentioning college ball, Northfield Knight/Dundas Duke rivalry, along with Dukes ace Pastor Charlie Ruud. He also mentioned the recent visit of Joe Mauer to town during the Spring Twins Caravan and the popularity of Northfields Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration.

Amazing…Now and Then..Photo Overlay Concept

Inspired by a Mashable blog this week, which introduced dearphotograph.com, I went out to take my own personal photo-versions. The website is only a few weeks old, and the concept a flash idea by the creator, Taylor Jones. So simple yet so brilliant. I was blown away at the results.

Following are old photos from my earlier life, held up on top of the current version and shot with a camera to capture a blend of then and now!
