Well, apparently my computer at home does not like Shelfari, because the site had no problem uploading on the computers in SCILS and I was the only person in the class who had an issue. From what I saw, Shelfari seems to be more interactive than Library Thing, perhaps more focused on the social aspect of books and reading. There seems to be more emphasis on discussion.

Library Thing vs. Shelfari

Right now, I can pretty much say that I prefer Library Thing over Shelfari because the Shelfari site is not loading for me, so I can't even check it out. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'll check back later to see if it's working. As for Library Thing, I LOVE the site! What a great idea to have people catalog and tag their books online so that others can find people with similar reading interest, as well as find books that are similar to any work you enter or very unlike it. The site also has groups and message boards, so users can discuss books with one another. I particularly love that the search feature allows users to search by works, authors, tags, in addition to talks messages, groups, and members. After navigating around the site for a bit, I deemed Library Thing worthy of being added to my favorites!

Rosemary stated that as librarians we need to

just the demand for information."

This is an important insight, as there are many would-be patrons out there who have no idea about the services the library can offer. Part of our job as librarians is to publicize our services and reach out to those who haven't yet discovered what's behind our doors.

Great Library Blog

When I came across the Ann Arbor District Library blog, I immediately liked the layout. It has a nice streamlined look accented with pleasant neutral tones. Ann Arbor keeps their blog up to date with upcoming events, including links related to the events. Daily events are also found on the main page. The blog is easy to navigate, with search and browse options available for the catalog, events, and services. Users can also subscribe to RSS feeds or use the Ask A Librarian feature. With its abundance of information organized in a visually appealing manner, I found the Ann Arbor District Library blog to be a great example for other libraries.

Information Overkill?

Brown's "Limits to Information" can be considered a lesson to libraries that we need to take care that patrons are not feeling overwhelmed with the abundance of information and media formats available. There are those who will push for constant technological advances and insist on having the most cutting edge in electronics. On the other hand we have those who are intimidated by all of this new technology and would prefer to stick to the good old fashioned way of doing things. They are comfortable with what they know and don't feel they can necessarily rely on computers, since with new technology comes new problems (which sounds ironic since technology is also what comes as an answer to problems). The key is to strive for balance and to achieve this, we need to streamline, determining what is needed and what can be discarded.
