1SAMBAYAN stands unequivocally in full support of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. This is not a political harassment or strategy — it is a moral and constitutional imperative well documented and based on undisputed facts. When the second-highest official of the land stands accused of offenses that strike at the very heart of our Republic, silence is complicity.

The evidence speaks for itself, it is overwhelming, shocking, and undeniable:

P612 MILLION in Confidential and Intelligence Funds spent with zero transparency, accountability, or proper documentation.

P125 MILLION — public money entrusted for security and service — liquidated in less than 24 hours, a physical and logistical impossibility that screams irregularity.

Receipts and documents submitted to justify spending bearing names of persons who do not even exist.

SALN declarations showing ZERO cash or bank deposits over five years, while AMLA official records flag P6.77 BILLION in suspicious transactions linked to her personal and family accounts.

Public threats against the highest officials of the land and institutions — acts that instill fear, incite division, and openly defy the very Constitution she swore to uphold.

These are not mere administrative lapses. These are acts of betrayal of public trust, culpable violations of the Constitution, and clear misdeeds warranting removal from office.

To allow someone accused of such grave offenses to remain in power is to tell every Filipino that corruption pays, that accountability is optional and that the law does not apply to the rich and powerful. It tells the youth that public service is just a means for self-enrichment. It tells the poor that their taxes can be stolen with impunity.

Enough is enough. We call on all citizens, lawmakers, and defenders of truth to stand firm. The impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte is our chance to prove that in the Philippines, NO ONE is above the law — not even the Vice President.

Marcos Singilin, Duterte Panagutin!

Never Again to Martial Law!!!

SELDA

Hustisya

Martial Law remains one of the darkest chapters in our nation’s history. It was a time marked by fear, abuse, and silenced freedoms. Yet in the end, it was the people who prevailed.

Today, we face a different kind of battle — one not waged with arms, but with integrity and accountability. Corruption remains our greatest enemy, robbing our children of classrooms, our families of hospitals, and our people of their dignity every day. Yet just as the nation once stood together to overcome tyranny, so too will it be the strength of the people that will bring an end to corruption.

This day is a reminder that true power does not lie in the hands of a dictator, nor in the wealth of the few, but in the collective strength of a people bound by courage, hope, and bayanihan.

Hindi tayo makakalimot. At hindi tayo titigil hanggang masiguro nating ang kinabukasan ng ating bayan ay nakaugat sa katapatan, katarungan, at pagkakaisa.

As the world mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, we join the global community in these moments of sorrow and in remembrance of the legacy of love and compassion that he has left behind. A shepherd of compassion, humility, and unwavering faith, Pope Francis spent his life at the service of others and to the message of love, mercy, and unity.

He was a shepherd whose heart beat for the most vulnerable among us, a voice of compassion in a world increasingly divided, a servant who walked humbly with God. He once said, “The name of God is Mercy.” In his true life, he lived out what mercy is by his own actions. His life and legacy touched people everywhere: His pursuit of peace, justice, and dignity for all people — no matter their race, creed or background — made the world a better place. In tumultuous times of division and uncertainty, he was a voice of conscience, a beacon of hope, an unwavering defender of the downtrodden and dispossessed.

His entire life has been devoted to service of the Lord and His Church. He has taught us to approach the principles of the Gospel with fairness, courage and real charity. We ask for the perpetual repose of his soul, and we surrender him with profound thanksgiving for his examples as a true Disciple of the Lord Jesus to the infinitely merciful love of our One and Triune God. We call on the people of the Philippines to internalize, live out, and embody the truly liberating aspects of the Pope’s life and teachings.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Catholic community and all who drew hope and strength from his words and deeds. May his spirit always lead us to a more just, compassionate and united world.

May Pope Francis rest in peace in eternity. Your light will still shine.

Issued and signed on this day, 22nd April 2025

The Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) joins the Catholic Church, the entire Christendom, and the workers of the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis, the workers’ and people’s pope.

We will remember Pope Francis as a true follower of Christ, a champion of the dignity of workers and all humans, of labor and human rights, and of social justice and the environment.

Pope Francis truly served as the conscience of the world in a dark period in history. During his papacy, workers and the oppressed and their allies knew that the Vatican would always take the stands that favor them on the most important social, economic and political issues.

We take special note of the paths that he broke in taking the progressive stand on controversial issues – women and LGTBQ, liberation theology and Communism, profit and globalization, Palestine and authoritarian attacks on civic spaces.

We cherish the memories of his visit to the Philippines, the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia, in 2015, after the Filipino workers and people suffered from one of the strongest typhoons in history and government neglect.

We will always remember how, under his leadership, the Catholic Church in the Philippines provided refuge and succor to victims of Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs, unfazed by the former president’s verbal attacks and threats.

We hope that the Catholic bishops will find a replacement that will continue and build on Pope Francis’ legacy. As the world faces increasing superpower rivalry and belligerence, continuing genocide, severe economic and cost-of-living crises, worsening climate emergency, and labor and human rights violations, we need someone like Pope Francis at the helm of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis leaves a rich legacy from which the Filipino workers and people and the workers of the world will continue to draw from in our struggles for labor and human rights and social and environmental justice.

Pope Francis will continue to be a symbol held aloft by workers’ struggles for change in the Catholic Church, in the workplace, and in society. He has died, but he will continue to live on in our hearts, minds and struggles.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

With deep sorrow, yet with profound gratitude, we mourn the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis. His final words to his beloved Church echoed the joy of Easter. He said, “Today at last, the singing of the ‘alleluia’ is heard once more in the Church, passing from mouth to mouth, from heart to heart, and this makes the people of God throughout the world shed tears of joy.” It is okay to shed tears of sorrow during this joyful Easter Octave. After all, it was he who reminded us that “we can only see more clearly through eyes washed by tears.”

He was a shepherd who walked with his people, often choosing the dusty road toward the peripheries rather than the comfort of the center. Through Evangelii Gaudium and Fratelli Tutti, he reminded us that the heart of the Gospel beats most strongly where pain, poverty, and exclusion dwell. He invited us to be a listening Church — one that opens its ears to the cries of the people and its heart to the stirrings of the Spirit.

Through his vision of synodality, Pope Francis challenged us to rediscover the Church not as a fortress, but as a field hospital — welcoming, healing, and journeying together. With Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum, he taught us to see the earth as our common home, entrusted to our care, especially for the sake of the generations to come. And with his characteristic wit and warmth, he once called our Overseas Filipino migrant workers “contrabandistas de la fe” — smugglers of the faith — reminding us that the witness of simple, faithful lives can cross borders and touch hearts where formal missionaries cannot go.

Pope Francis has now returned to the Father, but his legacy as a supreme pontiff — that is, as bridge-builder — will never be forgotten by the Church. Let us pray for the repose of his soul and commit ourselves to carrying forward his call: to grow into a Missionary Synodal Church — one that goes forth, listens deeply, walks humbly with others, and proclaims God’s mercy with joy.

Let us pray:

O God of mercy and compassion, we entrust to You our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, whom You have called from this life to Yourself. Grateful for his tireless witness to the Gospel, his courage in proclaiming mercy, and his love for the poor and for the earth, we now commend his soul to Your eternal embrace. Grant him the reward of faithful service: the joy of seeing You face to face. May he rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served with humility and hope. Amen.

+Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David
Bishop of Kalookan
CBCP President

On Thursday we in the University of the Philippines Los Baños will celebrate Loyalty Day & Alumni Homecoming. This year we stretched the day to a week, as it began on Friday, October 4 and will end on October 10. Before Friday noon the Trade Fair was open.

These days, we interpret October 10 as a marker of commitment, a pledge renewed yearly by the numerous students, faculty, staff, and alumni to the university. Hence, the parade of units and offices which we mounted a couple of days ago, on a rainy Sunday morning. Like the second semester’s Feb Fair, Loyalty Day is an occasion for alumni to return to Los Baños and initiate reunions. I understood these during my first year in service. Historical awareness will come later, not immediately. Unlike the Feb Fair which makes it a point to regularly remind constituents and visitors of its 70s roots as a protest movement against Martial Law, Loyalty Day — though transparent — isn’t as forthcoming. Here’s a screenshot from the Office of Alumni relations (https://oar.uplb.edu.ph/loyalty-day/ld2024/).

The logical link between then (World War I volunteerism) and now (general mirth, pledges of loyalty, and unity) is best voiced by a post from the Business Affairs Office.

Well and good, then yes? Our commitment to the university feeds into the university’s service to the nation and the world. However, problems arise when we look into the grounds of this commitment, the nature of the service, and the direction of our loyalties. Who decides the nobility of a cause? Who benefits from this public act of volunteerism? Who gains more power, curries greater favor and from which hegemon? Salient questions then and now, as certificates of candidacy are filed, our ruling blocs carrying the banners (though sometimes veiled, sheathed, or temporarily denied) of their choice patrons (US or China), ceaselessly courting their foreign favor as they vie for domestic popularity.

On October 13, 2012, Prof. Elmer Ordoñez published “Under the Stacks: Retrieving the forgotten past,” an article for the Manila Times and a review of Saul Hofileña Jr.’s book. To illustrate Filipino subservience to the US after 1916, Ordoñez mentions UPLB: “The Faculty and students of the University of the Philippines (Los Baños) volunteered to a man to enlist in the US Army at the start of the First World War. For decades, UP Los Baños celebrated this event as Loyalty Day. They had since come to their senses and called it Arbor Day.”

While correct, Ordoñez missed two marks:

(A) Arbor Day — or Tree Planting Day, an acknowledgment of our dependence and need for trees and ecological balance — was pegged in the Philippines at June 25 since 2012.

(B) 1918, 2012, and 2024 — 106 years, and we have yet to come to our senses.

Oppression upon oppression, deceit upon deceit! They refuse to know me, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 9:6)

One Faith. One Nation. One Voice. — a network of Church people founded on the principles of truth, justice and peace — has embraced a mandate to join the Filipino people in the fight against disinformation and lies. The latest maneuvers for a questionable ‘People’s Initiative’ or other methods for amendments to the 1987 Constitution are a danger to our democratic rights and freedoms as well as a threat to our sovereignty and the protection of our national patrimony. We join in One Voice to say: No to Cha-Cha!

Even more importantly, we commit to engaging with parishes and churches, local communities and schools, and peoples’ and civil society organizations to strengthen and enlighten our collective commitment to participative governance that listens to the voices of the poor and marginalized. Clearly, we should be prioritizing their most urgent needs, as they suffer under back-breaking poverty, soaring inflation, widespread joblessness, and inadequate social services. Our fight against Charter Change is a fight for genuine development that benefits the toiling majority.

We believe that those currently pressing for Charter Change are motivated by self-serving interests for political power and the spoils of cooperation with foreign businesses and investments. We can foresee the imminent danger of power grabs and term extensions. We can feel the manipulations of those who take advantage of ordinary citizens who have not had opportunity to consider what is in their best interest and in the interest of future generations.

We have work to do, so that more Filipinos will understand that Cha-Cha is yet another deceptive maneuver to keep them poor and powerless. Our Constitution isn’t perfect, but we should be fully and transparently consulted on ANY and EVERY proposed change. Let us rise the challenge and join in One Voice for the common good: No to Cha-Cha! Tuloy ang laban!
