Sunday night, February 4th at 7 pm, this critically-acclaimed guitar duo play an extremely intimate show in the area’s best acoustic listening room - Randy Wood’s Concert Hall in Bloomingdale, just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Savannah.

They both spent time in Stacey’s older brother Steve Earle’s band The Dukes, but since then have gone on to write, record and release impressive and beautiful songs on their own. They’ve opened up for Joan Baez, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, Ralph Stanley, Richard Thompson, Gregg Brown and Iris Dement (among others). They’ve played all of the major folk festivals, including Tellruide, Newport, MerleFest and Mariposa, as well as popular radio shows like NPR’s Mountain Stage.

This will be their first time in our area, and they’ll play two full sets, with a meet-and-greet at intermission.

This marks the first time that John has appeared as a solo artist in Savannah in several years. If you have seen him before, you know that he is an amazing performer who puts on incredible shows, and if you have never seen him before, you won’t want to miss this great opportunity to see an up close and personal show from a man that many consider to be one of the finest blues guitarists, singers and harmonica players in the entire world!

John’s career began in the early 1960s, when he was first turned on to the almost mythical recordings of the late, great Delta bluesman Robert Johnson. Hearing his calling, John devoted himself to learning the intricate and highly personal and improvisational style of bottleneck guitar playing and vocalizing that Johnson and his peers such as Charley Patton, Son House, Skip James, Blind Willie McTell and others made famous.

He signed to Vanguard Records, the leading commercial folk and blues label of the 1960s, and recorded many classic albums, some of which featured electric backing by members of The Hawks, a Canadian roadhouse band whom he would later introduce to his friend, the young Bob Dylan. Dylan would subsequently hire that group to record and tour with him on his infamous 1966 electric rock tour of the U.K.. The group would later re-name themselves The Band, and go on to become superstars in their own right.

Over the past 4 decades, Hammond has released a steady string of live and studio albums - some with backing musicians, some by himself - each of which displays a mastery of his instruments that has become the benchmark which most all budding bluesmen aspire to hit. It’s said that the late Duane Allman once drove a beat-up milk truck for an entire day to show up and sit in on one of John Hammond’s recording sessions. He’s played with Jimi Hendrix, jammed with Johnny Winter, recorded with Dr. John, JJ Cale, drummer Stephen Hodges, Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, Doug Sahm and Bob Dylan sideman Augie Meyers, Little Charlie & The Nightcats, and many, many more.

He’s been nominated several times for the Grammy award and has one under his belt in the Blues category.

A few years back, he and his longtime friend, the genius songwriter Tom Waits, collaborated on a stunning album called Wicked Grin, which found Hammond interpreting a full CD’s worth of classic (as well as unreleased) Waits tunes. Produced by Waits himself, and featuring a handful of musicians who have worked with Tom in the past, it was an unexpected departure for Hammond, whom many consider a blues purist. However, John Hammond is much more than a limiting description such as that would imply.

He is a phenomenal musician who knows how to get the most out of a song.

Catching his live shows are like traveling back though time to an era when complex music and emotions were displayed using simple means. A steel resonator guitar (or Dobro), an acoustic guitar, a slide or bottleneck, a mouth harp on a wire neck rack, and a strong voice are all he needs to get across his art. Even proficient guitarists are in awe of his technique, and soul singers lie awake at night dreaming they could open up their mouths and find his voice at their disposal.

Tiny Team is extremely proud to be able to bring in yet another artist of this exemplary caliber to Savannah.

Opening the show will be local acoustic blues guitarist and singer Michael Maddox, a familiar face to many in the area, whose rare public performances are as impressive as they are infrequent. We’re honored to have him round out this great bill.

The concert was a complete sellout, and as those who were there can attest, the band played GREAT, and the room looked and sounded GREAT as well.

It was really nice to see such a diverse crowd of people enjoying a rock show. We had people from 21 to 65, hanging out, getting along and seeing a bad-ass band.

Props must be doled out to Connect Savannah Magazine for stepping up to the plate and co-sponsoring the show, Capital A Productions for doing a terrific job with the PA (that was easily the best that room has EVER sounded), Tadd Trueb at the New Design Front for some eye-catching poster, ad and ticket design, Kay-Wad for something I’m not at liberty to discuss, Bill Dawers and Christopher Miller at the Savannah Morning News for writing such kind articles about the gig (here, here, and here), plus Murmur Magazine for featuring the show in their June issue.

This is the first time these alternative rock legends (featuring members of CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN) have played in Savannah in almost a decade!
