Nichols, NY—As part of Tioga Downs’ ongoing commitment to supporting its surrounding community, the casino, along with its owner Jeff Gural, will present $500,000 in funding from the Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation to deserving organizations. The Foundation will present the award recipients with their share of the $500,000 at a check presentation to be held on Friday, January 3 at 6 p.m. in the casino’s Event Center Ballroom. The award is the second of two $500,000 check presentations that the Foundation, a non-profit organization that reviews and selects the applications for grant funding, made in 2019.

In order to qualify for funding through the Foundation, applicants must be charitable, religious, literary, scientific or educational groups operating in Broome, Tioga, Chemung or Bradford counties. Qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations have the opportunity to apply twice annually for awards, during the July and January cycle. Accounting for both award periods, Tioga Downs donated a total of $1 million during 2019.

Tioga Downs Welcomes New Executive Chef

Mark Henry, a 25-year industry veteran, joins the resort’s culinary team as its new Executive Chef.

Nichols, NY—Tioga Downs Casino Resort is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Henry to the position of Executive Chef.

Chef Mark joins the Tioga Downs team with more than 25 years of experience in the industry. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Chef Mark’s resume includes leadership positions at four- and five-star restaurants and hotels across North America, including the Seven Feathers Resort & Casino in Canyonville, Ore., the Plaza Hotel in New York City, Marriot’s Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Ariz. and the iconic Eden Roc Resort & Spa in South Beach, Fla. Most recently, he served as the Senior Executive Chef for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

His approach is fresh and puts an emphasis on the farm-to-table philosophy. Chef Mark’s excellent leadership skills, captivating personality and dynamic energy motivates employees in both the kitchen and the dining room.

In addition to his degree in culinary arts, Chef Mark is a member of the American Culinary Foundation (ACF), participated in the Return of the Great Regional Chefs event at the James Beard House and, because of his commitment to using sustainable products, is green certified. He has also been honored with numerous accolades, including Zagat awards, the Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DiRoNa) Award and the Greatest of the Grape People’s Choice Award for food and wine pairing.

Tioga Downs Announces Summer Concert Lineup

The 2019 schedule includes an impressive roster of musical artists set to rock the racetrack this summer

Nichols, NY – The thundering of galloping hooves won’t be the only sound drawing in crowds at Tioga Downs this summer. The racetrack and casino announced the exciting lineup for its summer 2019 concert series sponsored by Mirabito Energy Products and Pepsi. Beginning June 7, Tioga Downs will host musical artists from various genres and generations, from country to 1960s-era rock and roll.

The inaugural concert of the series on June 7 will feature legendary performer Chubby Checker, known primarily for his iconic 1960 hit cover of “The Twist,” which Billboard recognized in 2008 as the biggest chart hit of all time. Checker will take the stage with Charlie Thomas’ Drifters, a doo-wop vocal group formed in the early 1950s. Tickets will be available at 9 a.m. on May 1 at three price points: $25, $35 and $45.

Anyone nostalgic for 1980s radio hits is sure to enjoy George Thorogood, who will perform at Tioga Downs on July 26 with his band The Destroyers. Sponsored by Tioga State Bank, Thorogood and the Destroyers are set to rock the racetrack with hits like “Bad to the Bone” and “I Drink Alone.” Tickets will be available for $40, $50 or $60.

The summer calendar wouldn’t be complete without one for the country fans. On August 8, Lee Greenwood will perform with pop/country artist Crystal Gayle. In a fitting tribute to Greenwood’s biggest hit, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” all of the proceeds from the $20 ticket price will benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group.

To wrap up the series, 90s rock sensation Smash Mouth will perform from their catalog of hits like “All Star,” and “I’m a Believer.” Tickets will be available at $30, $40 and $50 tiers.

Tioga Downs Announces Racing Season Event Schedule at Press Luncheon

The 2019 season will feature Derby and Father’s Day celebrations, the first-ever Charity Cup and more

Nichols, NY – For local race fans, summer begins now. Though the sunshine and warm weather are still on their way, Tioga Downs is ready to begin its summer season with an events calendar sure to entice families, friends, and racing enthusiasts. At the annual Tioga Downs Press Luncheon on April 30 at P.J. Clarke’s within Tioga Downs, local community leaders and media professionals were treated to a preview of what’s to come this summer at the track.

To kick off the summer season, Tioga Downs will host its highly anticipated Derby Day event to commemorate the kickoff of the racing season with the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 4. Celebrations will include a Derby hat contest, a performance from the racetrack’s live bugler, t-shirt and magnet giveaways and a $1,000 Derby Dream Bet promotion. Two Dream Bet winners will receive $500 to bet on a single horse of their choice and will collect any resulting winnings. Between live races, the Kentucky Derby will be shown. Post time is 5:00 p.m. There will also be a firework show after the last race to end the night.

Memorial Day will be celebrated at the track on Sunday, May 26, with an umbrella giveaway at the promotions table starting at 5 p.m. and an impressive, patriotic firework display after the last race. Post time is 6:15 p.m.

The first-ever Charity Cup will take place Saturday, June 8, where nonprofit organizations will have the chance to test their wagering knowledge by competing in a Tioga Downs handicapping contest, with the possibility of winning a share of $20,000. The $20,000 award will be donated to the event by the Southern Tier Harness Association and Jeff Gural.

Father’s Day at Tioga Downs offers plenty of excitement for dads and race fans alike. On Sunday, June 16, the track will host its annual Wiener Dog Trot, where spirited dachshunds will take to the starting gate. One lucky guest will have the opportunity to win a ride-on lawn mower as part of the Father’s Day giveaway. Post time is 1 p.m.

The calendar for the summer 2019 season is packed with more special events, including an Independence Day race at 1 p.m. on July 4, a second Wiener Dog Trot on August 10, and a special series of high-stakes races planned for weekends in August. The Joie De Vie Open Mare Trot and the Crawford Farms Open Trot will take place on Sunday, August 11, with a high-stakes purse of an estimated $175,000. The following week, the track will host the Empire Breeders Classic Finals on August 18. Three-year-old horses will compete for an estimated $250,000-dollar purse. Rich Mattei To Tioga Downs

East Rutherford, NJ - Tioga Downs welcomes Rich Mattei to the announcer's booth and Racing Office for the 2019 season.

Rich had originally been hired to do the race calls at Vernon Downs, a position that will now be filled by John Horne whose voice is familiar as the Tioga announcer over the past few seasons. Horne will continue to write the lead-in and wrap-up articles for both tracks.

Mattei's introduction to calling races was attending the Tom Durkin announcing school in Goshen, NY. He then went on to serve as the announcer for the baby races at Gaitway Farm. That gig led to relief stints at various tracks such as Ocean Downs, Rosecroft, Northfield, Vernon, Freehold and Harrah's Philadelphia along with handicapping the races on TVG for Meadowlands.

"My first full season harness racing job was as the photo-finish/teletimer guy at Harrah's where Rob Pennington and Joe Auger would let me come in early and take entries, put races together and learn about how to do things in the Race Office," said Mattei. "Next was a season as the charter at Freehold, then Karen Fagliarone hired me on as the Assistant Race Secretary which has piqued my interest in that direction. I certainly appreciate the opportunity to work for Jeff Gural and Jason Settlemoir and look forward to the summer at Tioga Downs."

Job Fairs to be Held March 23^rd and 26^th

Nichols, N.Y. – March 19, 2019 – Tioga Downs Casino Resort, one of the Southern Tier’s largest employers, is thrilled to be opening its doors, and opportunities, to prospective employees at two upcoming job fairs.

The casino resort is currently looking to fill more than 80 full time and part time positions as well as seasonal positions for the racing and golf season and will welcome local talent at two job fairs during the month of March. Table Games Management will also be on hand to discuss the Tioga Downs Dealer Training Program, which can lead to an exciting career new to the region.

The first of the two job fairs will occur at Tioga Downs Casino Resort in PJ Clarke’s on Saturday, March 23^rd from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., with 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. being open only to military veterans first in gratitude of their service to our country. The second job fair is open to the public and will occur in PJ Clarke’s on Tuesday, March 26^th from 3 – 7 p.m.

Tioga Golf Club taps PGA Member for top-notch experience

Following successful completion of a $3.28 million renovation of the club house at its 112-acre golf course, Tioga Downs continues to raise the bar for customer experience as it announced the new hire of PGA Class A Member Adam Augustine as Head Golf Professional for the facility.

Augustine comes into the position with over twenty yers of proven industry expertise, as he was awarded Central New York PGA Merchandiser of the Year in 2009; a three-time winner of the Central N.Y. PGA Fall Pro Shootout as well as Pennsylvania Central Counties Pro-Am Championship winner in 2017; and a three-time nominee for Central N.Y. PGA Section Assistant Golf Professional of the year.

Born and raised in Elmira, N.Y., Augustine still resides there with his wife, Shelly.

Augustine has been a Class A PGA Member since 2004, and dedicated several years as a member on the national PGA President’s Council on Growing the Game. Throughout his career, he has continued to utilize his passion and knowledge to still provide excellent educational opportunities for golfers of all ages and skillsets, while providing award-winning golf course operations and a proven track record for increasing club memberships and engagement at his facilities.

Nichols, N.Y. – February 1, 2019 – Tioga Downs Casino Resort and Watkins Glen International announced a multi-year partnership today, making Tioga Downs the ‘Official Casino’ of Watkins Glen International. At a press reception in the Tioga Downs ballroom today, Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup as well as Tioga Downs President Charles Otto discussed the partnership and the benefits it will have for the Southern Tier. Watkins Glen International and Tioga Downs will be working together to expand the region’s tourism reach with packages that complement each other’s properties and New York State attractions in general. These include bringing motor coach groups and tours from other areas so guests can experience all that the Southern Tier has to offer.

“Today is a great day for the Southern Tier with two of the region’s premier destinations coming together to provide additional opportunities to draw and attract visitors from outside the area. Watkins Glen International is a historic organization that has a long-standing reputation of quality and tradition and Tioga Downs is proud to partner with them,” Tioga Downs President Charles Otto said.

As part of the multi-year deal as the Official Casino of Watkins Glen International, Tioga Downs will have the title sponsorship of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race taking place on Saturday, June 29, 2019 during Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen race weekend at Watkins Glen International. The race will now be named the “Tioga Downs 240,” the 240 represents the length of the race in minutes.

In addition, the Daytona 500 viewing party will be hosted at Tioga Downs on Sunday, February 17, 2019. The Daytona 500 is a 500-mile-long Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series motor race held annually at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Admission to the watch party will be free and will include interactive games as well as food and drink specials while the big race is broadcast throughout the property.

Nichols, N.Y. – January 2, 2019 – As part of the commitment of Tioga Downs and owner Jeff Gural, Tioga Downs is pleased to host its very first cocktail reception officially announcing the recipients of the first $250,000 in funding through the Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation, a non-profit organization that reviews and selects applications for grant funding.

The cocktail reception will be held at the Tioga Downs ballroom on Friday, January 4 at 6:30 pm. All sixteen award recipients will be on hand to receive their share of $250,000 during this inaugural event, with further announcements regarding the next round of grant funding forthcoming. All sixteen grant award recipients were narrowed down from a list of more than fifty applications received since the beginning of November.

“My mother was from Binghamton, and I fondly remember spending many holidays here as a child. It’s a region I’ve grown to love, which is why I chose to do business here, and one I will always support,” Jeff Gural, owner of Tioga Downs, said. “Through the Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation, we are proud to announce the first sixteen recipients that will share in $250,000 and we look forward to awarding additional grant monies in 2019.”

The Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation is now accepting applications for 2019. In 2019, $1 million will be paid out in two phases: the first phase will be in July 2019 and the second phase will be paid out in January 2020. The Tioga United Way’s Dancing United with the Starz ’18 was a great success thanks to their generous donors, sponsors, dancers, volunteers and supporters. On Saturday, December 1, 2018, more than 400 guests sparkled and swayed in Tioga Downs’ gorgeous grand ballroom in Nichols, NY. Over-the-top hors d’oeuvres were enjoyed while participating in an exciting balloon pop. Their attention was then brought to the dance floor where Masters of Ceremony, Lew Sauerbrey and Cate Pichany along with Disc Jockey, Mike Neil, kept the audience engaged and grooving.

Tioga United Way Executive Director, Carolyn Palladino, announced that Mr. Jeff Gural would, once again, match half of what was raised for the entire event. This clearly inspired the audience to reach deep down in their pockets and donate even more.

The highlight of the event was watching the 11 competing couples light up the dance floor. The couple who won the Judge’s Choice Mirror Ball Trophy was Sabrina Slater, the Pastor of Christ the King Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Spencer, NY, and Merlin Joseph, Manager of Key Bank in Binghamton, NY who danced a salsa soca and wowed the audience. The couple who took home the People’s Choice Mirror Ball Trophy and raised the most money was Tia Wright with her brother, Arthur Murray Instructor, Harrison Wright, who danced a Mambo with a fun Bollywood beat.

The total amount raised from the event surpassed their goal of $50,000 which will go toward the 34 agencies of the Tioga United Way. In attendance were NY Senator Fred Akshar, Mr.& Mrs. Jeff Gural, Tioga County Legislator, Marte Sauerbrey, as well as many friends and family who travelled from all over to support their favorite dancer.

The Tioga United Way would like to give special thanks to Jana Bowen, Anne Grant, Barbara Patten, Madison Hornick, Teresa McNamara, Connie Sternberg, Betsy Snyder and Jenny Ceccherelli for volunteering their time and energy to make this event a success. Andrew Hamilton has been named Senior Regional Director of Food and Beverage for the thriving Nichols and Vernon destinations.

A veteran of the food and beverage industry, Mr. Hamilton has had a passion for culinary arts since a young age. The Philadelphia Enquirer dubbed him as an “upcoming chef” at the age of 23. Today, he brings with him more than 40 years of experience, 24 years of which he spent with Hyatt Hotels and Hyatt Gaming. There, he worked at 14 properties in various leadership roles, ranging from Executive Chef to Assistant General Manager. He opened 12 properties with Hyatt Hotels including the Lone Eagle Grille in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and the Black Hawk casino in Black Hawk, Colorado. Mr. Hamilton also spent time as Vice President of Food and Beverage for Jack Binion at the Horseshoe casino in Bossier City, Louisiana. Most recently, Mr. Hamilton served as the Food and Beverage Director in Rochester, Washington, where he completed a $45 million renovation for the Washington Chehalis Tribe.

Application Process Officially Open to Southern Tier Non-profits

NICHOLS, NY – Mr. Jeff Gural, owner of Tioga Downs Casino Resort, is making good on his promise to give back in a big way to community organizations in the Southern Tier.

The Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation will award $250,000 in funding to non-profit organizations before the year’s end, and is now accepting applications. These funds are intended to contribute to community development in the counties surrounding Tioga Downs. The ideal organizations will be those that combat poverty and community deterioration by providing financial support to charitable organizations in order to advance charitable, religious, literary, scientific and educational purposes.

Mr. Gural, who is well known for his passion for philanthropy and care for the community, says it’s a pleasure to award these funds to worthy recipients – but also a responsibility.

“Those who are fortunate enough to have the financial means to better the lives of others should do so whenever possible. Charlie Otto to oversee operations at two premiere upstate casinos

Mr. Otto was officially promoted from his previous position of Director of Operations at Tioga Downs to President/General Manager of both Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs. Mr. Otto is a veteran of the gaming industry, having spent 33 years in the casino business, 25 of which he spent in upstate New York casinos. With wins at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, the Bob Baffert-trained Justify, can become only the second horse since 1978 to win the Triple Crown with a win at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Second jewel of Triple Crown to be simulcast at Tioga

Nichols, N.Y. – May 18, 2018 – Harness racing fans who won’t want to miss the field’s pursuit of the second jewel of the Triple Crown will have to travel no further than Tioga Downs to watch the 143^rd Preakness on Saturday, May 19. Live racing at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore begins at 11:30 a.m., and the Preakness post time is set for 6:48 p.m.

With a $1.5 million guaranteed purse, the Bob Baffert-trained Justify, winner of the Kentucky Derby, is a hot favorite to also win the Preakness Stakes. If successful Saturday, Justify will advance to the Belmont Stakes in three weeks’ time and attempt to sweep the series.

United States Supreme Court Lifts Federal Ban on Sports Betting

Decision paves the way for Tioga Downs to begin offering sports betting on property later this year

Nichols, N.Y. – May 15, 2018 – On Monday May 14, United States Supreme Court Judge Sam Alito ruled that the federal ban against sports betting is unconstitutional, paving the way for states across the country to introduce legalized sports betting. After a multi-year legal battle between New Jersey and the four major sports leagues, MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL, to get legalized sports betting outside of Nevada only, the monumental ruling paves the way for Tioga Downs as well as the other three New York State casinos to offer this type of wagering on property once legislation is written and passed by the State.

The responsibility now falls on the State of New York to define what sports betting will be allowed as well as write legislation regulating this new form of wagering. New York State Senator John Bonacic is planning on introducing a bill to the full Senate next Monday and anticipates it having enacted into law by June 20^th.
